Tree roots in a sunken lane in Strangford known locally as The Squeeze Gut. I found this reference to the lane:
"William, 23rd Baron de Ros, with his wife Georgiana and family, came to live permanently in Strangford when their home, Old Court House, was completed in 1844. Although County Down was a lesser affected area in the worst famine years of 1845 – 47, there was still great hardship and starvation. To provide Employment Relief Work William commissioned the Squeeze Gut – a sunken path - to be dug out in 1847.
It is said that the Squeeze Gut was so named because Old Court farmers used it to drive their cattle that way to the ferry and larger beasts often had to squeeze through. Local folklore claims that it became a lovers’ lane where a boy might give his girl a ‘squeeze’!"
In doing a little research on song lyrics, I found there are currently nearly 20,000 songs that use the phrase “squeeze me tight” in them. Out of those songs, probably no songwriter was thinking about the Cooper’s Hawk when he or she wrote those words.
But the words are certainly applicable as the Cooper’s Hawk is one of the few flying predators that catch their prey in their feet and repeatedly squeeze them until it dies which in itself is effective but not very romantic. In addition, Cooper’s Hawks will sometimes fly into a body of water and hold their victim underwater until it stops moving.
This smaller hawk is also one of the most agile and flies with abandon through tree tops in reckless pursuit of prey. One study of over 300 Cooper’s Hawk skeletons, nearly a quarter of them showed old, healed broken bones in the chest from crashing into limbs, etc. Exciting life.
The flaring of the tail feathers is sometimes the hawk’s effort to dry out its feathers while some observers think it could also be a signal the bird is alarmed or trying to make itself look bigger to an enemy. The particular morning last week when I took this photo the tall grass where it was hunting was heavy with dew so it might have been drying out.

How cane was made into juice for sugar making in the old days. This juice is also good to drink but be sure it has bee strained to remove pulp.
In former times cottages would have outbuildings dedicated to particular activities such as laundry. This perfectly preserved example at the Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton Le Hole in Yorkshire, demonstrates just how normal tasks can be carried out without the use of electricity and extremely expensive equipment.
As you rush off to your useless job in the early morning, consider the slower pace of life that was enjoyed by former generations.
A westbound CP ballast train, symbol 9WTH, rolls along their own trackage in the Thompson River Canyon. Typically most trains on this side of the river run eastbound but since this was a MOW move, it stayed on home rails all the way to North Bend.

Cathedrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde in Montreal.
I read that there was some controversy when construction was begun on this church in 1875, because the bishop decided it would be built in a predominantly English-speaking area on the city, away from the center of the French Catholic population. One account suggested this was a deliberate poke, the latest in the long history of friction between English and French in Montreal.
Well, the joke’s on the old bishop now, because the neighborhood he chose has grown up, and the grand cathedral is dwarfed and blotted out by the modern buildings surrounding it.

This Mallard Drake found going a little diffiult under this fallen log. Its mate swam under ahead of him with no problems and then gleefully paddled on. At the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in western Washington State.

For a person of large girth, there is every possibility they'll definitely get their guts squeezed passing through the narrow ope, Squeeze Guts Alley, which runs between Duke Street and St Mary's Street in Truro. The ope is barely wide enough for one person to walk through and meeting anyone coming in the opposite direction certainly means squeezing your guts to pass by.
How, when and why it came by its name isn't known but the ope goes back many years and can be seen, unnamed, on a map of 1842. It can only be assumed "squeeze guts" was how everyone referred to this ope and the name stuck. Truro was both a market town and a stannary town and the opes gave workers and business people the ability to get about in haste to see to their business.
Squeeze Guts Alley would have been the shortcut for the principal inn, The Bull, in the town during the 17th century. It also provided quick access across the town to get to the quayside and the packet ships.
Certainly for me when I worked in Truro the opes provided me quick access from one street to street avoiding the crowds and saving precious minutes at lunchtime.
