As I walk around the countryside, admiring the skill of the stone wall builders, I'm often mystified by the apparent crudeness of some of the old gate posts, and structures like this squeeze stile (which is the tight gap in a wall that allows people to pass, but not sheep and cattle).

A local archaeologist confirmed my suspicions: they are most often standing stones from 3000 years ago that a farmer will have moved in the distant past to help make a wall or gatepost and free-up space on a paddock. And that's why there aren't as many stone circles as one might expect to find.

So now I know; and so do you!

Two different brands of coloured pencils. Stole this idea from Flickr contact Michelle, though I believe I may have tried this years ago. Getting a bit of cabin fever as winter wears down at a glacial pace.

This is a photo of the downtown Seattle public library. Built by Rem Koolhass, this piece of modern architectural art is as amazing on the inside as it is outside. This structure has been shot a ton so I really tried to give it something I hadn’t seen before. Out of all my shots that day, this one “popped” most for me. I brought out my wide angle lens (14mm full frame) and got really low to the ground for this shot. Standing on the corner, I could just barely squeeze in the entire structure. I waited for the sun to peek through the buildings downtown and captured the reflection on the side of the building, which I felt added to the dramatic nature of the structure. As you can see, there is a bit of lens flare, but I actually liked it this time. If you follow the flare trail, you can see it reflected all the way to the street sign on the left, which is ultimately why I decided to keep the street pole in. I really liked all the angles in this shot!

If you like this kind of funky perspective, here's another one of the Seattle Center.

The first rays of sunrise hit the twisted overgrown row of beech trees lining the Bregagh road in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. This is a spectacular tree lined road, known as the "Dark Hedges", but sadly it won't last forever as the trees are said to have lasted longer than their usual lifespan and are now in decay and under threat from traffic and weather events. In 2016, a storm destroyed or damaged 3 of them. There are about 90 remaining of the 150 originally planted in 1775 by the owner of the estate to which the road leads. The location was made famous in an episode of the TV series Game of Thrones, and now dozens of tour buses visit every day. Reading about these trees was a Stark (GoT pun there for any fans) reminder to me that a surprising number of the great landscape features I photograph are vulnerable and may not exist in their current form for so much longer. Sometimes it's because of the pressure mankind puts on our fragile ecosystems, but quite often it's just the ever-changing nature of this incredible planet, we bear witness to those changes even in our short lifetimes.

I was happy to have another visit to Ireland during a recent trip to Europe and I arranged an extra evening and morning to drive from Dublin up to the Antrim coast. It was my first time braving the mysteries of right hand drive cars, and I am happy to report that I managed it without "pranging" my rental car. I found the Dark Hedges first in the late afternoon, but the road was mobbed with people, there were even a number of vehicles parked visibly within the frame which is a shame, and I could see that it would set up better for an early morning picture where hopefully there wouldn't be so many tourists around. I drove from there to the Giants Causeway (an amazing feature I've posted before) but sunset was a bust. Coming back to the Dark Hedges in the early morning was the right thing to do, there was only one small group of photographers there and so I was able to squeeze my tripod in among them and wait for the sun to come up. The road is a treat to photograph at any time, in any season. It would of course be beautifully enhanced by a little Irish mist but no matter, I was really surprised and pleased to see the orange/red glow effect of the morning sun as the rim of the sun peeked over the nearest ridge. It lasts only a precious minute or two before the glow fades to a nice warm yellow light among the beeches. Happy Hedging!

SOO 910 with only 739 for power leading a healthy cut of COFC and manifest traffic squeezes through the yard at Trout Lake with the Marquette Local to one side and 909 on the other. Capacity was always a problem in the SOO era with long trains of COFC and short sidings on the Soo Subdivision. Some good planning was necessary to get the four trains a day over the road between Soo Yard and Gladstone without running into serious delays. September 4, 1982

I remember the first time I encountered the Beauty berry. My father and I had gone for a walk in his neighbourhood and he called me over, all excited, because of this strange and wonderful bush covered with purple berries that didn't look real. He was convinced that someone was trying to trick us and had put a plastic plant in their garden to trick us. It wasn't until he squeezed one of the berries in his hand was he convinced :)

I was able to squeeze a couple frames and a few different perspectives out of the remnants of this sunset. I think I like this one better with the boats in the mix.

Stare closely and you can imagine slight muscular movements as the fig tree slowly squeezes the mature palm tree. Eerie battle in the plant kingdom that the palm will very very slowly lose. Punta Custodio, 2 and 1/2 hours north of Puerta Vallarta.

Think this fig has been on steroids? Let's see Hulk Hogan take on this guy.

I inherited a frangipani tree in my garden. Through monsoonal rain and withering drought it produces hundreds of uniform flowers squeezed together in bunches big and small, high and low. Because it is a 'traditional' variety its effusive scent wafts all over the yard. It adds layers of meaning to the term 'exotic'.
