I put this together today using foamcore, fabric, and black duct tape. Also used a bit of hardware from Lowes to hold it onto the lightstand.
Here it is in all its glory. I like the quality of the light, it is very even and smooth.

Using a lumiquest softbox the flash light gets softened and spread to a size bigger than the flower, providing a nice surrounding effect. The location, slightly behind, gives a nice backlight to get through the 'tentacles' boosting the colors.
D-Lites x1 front left / softbox, x2 in lastolite (with train), fired by elinchrom skyport eco, guesstimated the exposure, as waiting for a new light meter, cured with a little post processing in Aperture, no second chances with our munchkin..

Lighting: A Profoto ComPact with a large octobank softbox was to my left as the main light. Tracy stood about a foot from the softbox.

Yes, my wife names our plants... every one of them. Palmer (pictured here) & Arnold (sitting happily in the sun on our back porch) came home on the same day, and both are actually doing pretty well. You really can see the texture in Large / White. Unlike Palmer, Arnold doesn't really give you an idea of what kind of plant it is. It was just the next thing that popped into her head. (We had been watching golf earlier in the day.)
Anyway, taking another pass with the DIY softbox. This one was actually a little harder then i expected it to be. For one, it was approaching the maximum size for the softbox. Secondly, I'm working with one flash, and wanted some shadows, so I needed a bit of fill. I finally ended up with one of the lights from our nightstand leaning on its side over my camera bag! It's not ideal as on axis fill, but it more or less got the job done. That said, I need a bigger softbox!
DIY softbox stuff. First time trying to make my eyes pop a little bit more. I'm pretty pleased with the picture overall. View in large or even original. My eyelashes are beautiful....lol

So when I got the assignment I didn't know what to do... and remembered that my friend Burtender had an idea of sticking his head in a softbox ... Thanks Bro !
So there it is !

My daughter's current toy of choice is something called Orbeez - tiny little polymer beads that absorb water and become larger, colourful, squishy and very slippery. They don't photograph well without a lot of light, so we placed some on my iPad and lit them up with the free SoftBox Pro app.

8.7.10,
Woke up feeling like a truck hit me, silly 14 hour weddings.
Didn't do much today. Called my hero Pham today and chatted about photography for almost an hour. Time flies when you're talking about spending money and not knowing what the future holds. We both decided that I need a 5DMKII and I really need to figure out what kind of photography I want to 'specialize' in. That's the hardest part since I like so many different styles/types of photography. I do know what pays well and I know what is a mess to deal with. I also know that I don't want this becoming boring or too much of a 'job' to where I hate it. Can someone just tell me what I should do? It'd be so much easier. lol
Buddy Pat came over and we hung out. Nothing really interesting came of it. lol I'm still trying to decide to leave the house tonight. It's very hard after last night haha.
This picture is another single ocf shot, other than being exhausted I still wanted something with a little bit of a punch to it and slightly interesting. Still working on my lighting of course, it's hard to do in such a small space. :( Oh well, it's still practice. :D
