One of the most beautiful blooms of spring comes from an unusual member of the Iris family — the walking iris (Neomarica gracilis). Neomarica is a clumping perennial that reaches anywhere from 18 to 36 inches (45-90 cm.). And once you see its flowers, you will appreciate another of its common names—the poor man’s orchid (not to be confused with the Schizanthus poor man’s orchid). This exotic-looking plant with its graceful sword-like foliage has white, yellow or blue flowers that resemble a cross between those of an orchid and an iris. Although they are short lived, lasting only a day, numerous blooms continue to follow over an extended period of time throughout spring, summer and fall. Growing walking iris plants is a great way to enjoy these interesting flowers.

A trip to Italy and a stay in Rome were almost obligatory part of the training of Dutch artists in the 16th century. After Jan Gossaert and Jan van Scorel, Maerten van Heemskerck also moved south. 🇬🇧 Alpinia purpurata, also known as red ginger, is a beautiful tropical plant, perennial in its natural environment (Indonesia, Oceania). The broad, long, lanceolate, green, shiny leaves, which develop from the rhizome, form a tall clump that can reach three metres in height.
. The flowers are white and very small and are of little interest. However, the bracts [¤¹] that surround them are remarkable. Oval and thick, they are organised in elegant bright red or pink terminal spikes.
Pachystachys are brightly coloured shrubs from tropical America. The yellow form has upright spikes, while the red form has a ruffled appearance.

In my previous shot I gave you a long description of how I feel the artistic images Daniel Herbert incorporated into the Ross Bridge were motivated by his concerns about the social injustices in Van Diemen's Land. He lays the blame right at the feet of the British Crown. Seditious stuff, and that's why he had to hide this inflammatory content among the sensuous curves of floral motifs.
Here's another example. This is on the north face one arch along from the rodent face. Look closely. It looks like a medieval gargoyle now doesn't it? The sort of grotesque figure you find on Notre Dame in Paris. The only difference here is that the monster is now very definitely a lion. And atop that mane sits the "uneasy" Crown.
But what is this "British" monster doing here? Ross was from the earliest days recognised as prime sheep grazing land. But a sheep is also a type for people. Not in the pejorative sense it has come to mean today, but in the way Jesus intended to use this pastoral simile. And remember William Blake's greatest poem "Jerusalem"? It is perhaps the most subversive nationalistic hymn ever (go on look it up and really read those words - Industrial Empire = "Dark satanic mills").
"And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountain green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?"
Surely not! Is this lamb here in Herbert's symbol "the holy Lamb of God"? Is Daniel Herbert suggesting that the oppression of the British Crown throughout the world (and really let's face it, ALL empires) is not just subjugating people, but Jesus Christ himself?
A prophet like Blake did say so, and Daniel Herbert (prophet) was saying so.

Cette grenouille peut être facilement distinguée, car c'est la seule grande grenouille arboricole du Costa Rica qui possède à la fois une bande blanche argentée sur la lèvre supérieure et une bande sombre en forme de masque allant de la narine à l'insertion des bras . This frog can be easily distinguished as it is the only large tree frog in Costa Rica that has both a silvery white band on the upper lip and a dark mask-like band running from the nostril to the insertion of the arms. Many individuals have a green patch on either side of the head between the dark mask and the lip. Colouration can vary from pale green to tan, and the frog may be uniformly coloured or have dark olive green to dark brown dorsal spots. It has a relatively flattened body and a smooth dorsal surface. The head is as broad as it is long, with a rounded museum at the top. It has a skin-like webbing between the toes and fingers and an enlarged disc on each finger which is adhesive. The eardrums are visible. The eyes are large, with elliptical horizontal pupils and copper-coloured irises.

Esta rana se distingue fácilmente porque es la única rana arborícola grande de Costa Rica que tiene una banda blanca plateada en el labio superior y una banda oscura en forma de máscara que va desde la fosa nasal hasta la inserción de los brazos. Muchos individuos tienen una mancha verde a ambos lados de la cabeza entre la máscara oscura y el labio. La coloración puede variar del verde pálido al tostado, y la rana puede ser de color uniforme o presentar manchas dorsales de color verde oliva oscuro a marrón oscuro. Tiene el cuerpo relativamente aplanado y la superficie dorsal lisa. La cabeza es tan ancha como larga, con un museo redondeado en la parte superior. Tiene una membrana parecida a la piel entre los dedos de los pies y de las manos y un disco agrandado en cada dedo que es adhesivo. Los tímpanos son visibles. Los ojos son grandes, con pupilas horizontales elípticas e iris de color cobrizo.

Viele Individuen haben auf jeder Seite des Kopfes einen grünen Fleck zwischen der dunklen Maske und der Lippe . Die Färbung kann von blassgrün bis bronzefarben variieren, und der Frosch kann einheitlich gefärbt sein oder Rückenflecken von dunklem Olivgrün bis Dunkelbraun haben .Er hat einen relativ flachen Körper und eine glatte Rückenfläche . Der Kopf ist ebenso breit wie lang, mit einem nach oben quadratisch abgerundeten Museum . Er hat einen hautähnlichen Gurt zwischen den Zehen und Fingern und eine vergrößerte Scheibe auf jedem Finger, die haftend ist. Die Trommelfelle sind sichtbar. Die Augen sind groß, mit horizontalen elliptischen Pupillen und kupferfarbenen Iriden .

Molti individui presentano una macchia verde su entrambi i lati della testa tra la maschera scura e il labbro. La colorazione può variare dal verde chiaro all'abbronzatura e la rana può essere uniformemente colorata o presentare macchie dorsali di colore verde oliva scuro o marrone scuro. Il corpo è relativamente appiattito e la superficie dorsale è liscia. La testa è larga quanto la lunghezza, con un museo arrotondato alla sommità. Ha una fettuccia simile alla pelle tra le dita dei piedi e delle mani e un disco allargato su ogni dito che è adesivo. I timpani sono visibili. Gli occhi sono grandi, con pupille ellittiche orizzontali e iride color rame.

La camera della tomba conteneva una bara di legno laccato attorno alla quale erano posti dei beni funerari.
Un totale di 11.500 reperti sono stati recuperati dalla tomba.
La tomba ha anche restituito molti altri tesori tra cui una corona d'oro e una cintura d'oro, entrambe piene di perle di giada a forma di virgola.
Questi ornamenti regali indicano che un re fu sepolto nella tomba.
Inoltre, il fatto che la cintura sia simile a una cintura trovata nella Tomba della Corona d'Oro e l'uso del motivo del drago nelle piastre d'oro, simile ai tesori nella Baekje King Muryeong, indicano anche che un re fu sepolto nella tomba.
Oltre alla corona e alla cintura, la camera conteneva anche braccialetti d'oro e anelli d'oro per ogni dito del re sepolto.

The tomb chamber contained a lacquered wooden coffin around which funerary goods were placed.
A total of 11,500 artifacts were recovered from the tomb.
The tomb also yielded many other treasures including a golden crown and a golden belt, both filled with comma-shaped jade beads.
These regal ornaments indicate that a king was buried in the tomb.
Furthermore, the fact that the belt is similar to a belt found in the Tomb of the Golden Crown and the use of the dragon motif in the gold plates, similar to the treasures in the Baekje King Muryeong, also indicate that a king was buried in the tomb.
In addition to the crown and belt, the chamber also contained gold bracelets and gold rings for each finger of the buried king.

UNO SGUARDO VERSO IL CARSO
Il Carso-Kras è un territorio esteso dalle ex province di Gorizia e Trieste alla Slovenia fino alla Croazia, caratterizzato dalla medesima conformazione geologica, fatta di rocce carbonatiche che subiscono una lenta dissoluzione a causa di pioggia e vento con la creazione di cavità e depressioni quali pozzi verticali e doline, così peculiare che in tutto il mondo aree dalla composizione del suolo simile sono chiamate “zone carsiche” e fenomeni naturali di questo tipo sono definiti con il termine scientifico di “carsismo". Un territorio accomunato non solo dall'essere stato teatro di violente battaglie durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale tra le milizie italiane e quelle austro-ungariche, ma soprattutto da manufatti simili - i muretti a secco, che marcano i terreni coltivabili e recintano i pascoli, i piccoli borghi dalle vie strette per essere meno esposti alla bora - analoghe produzioni enogastronomiche, una precisa biodiversità di flora e fauna, difficilmente riscontrabile in altri angoli del mondo.

A LOOK AT THE KARST
The Karst-Kras region extends from the former provinces of Gorizia and Trieste to Slovenia and Croatia. It shares a similar geological composition, made of carbonate rocks slowly dissolved by rain and wind, creating cavities and depressions such as vertical shafts and sinkholes. This unique geology is so distinctive that areas with similar soil compositions are known worldwide as "karst zones," and natural phenomena of this type are scientifically defined as "karst." This region shares not only the fact that it was the site of violent battles during the First World War between Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies, but also, above all, similar structures—dry-stone walls marking arable land and enclosing pastures, small villages with narrow streets to avoid exposure to the Bora wind—similar food and wine production, and a distinct biodiversity of flora and fauna rarely found elsewhere in the world.

Ho avuto modo di incontrare più volte la femmina di Pernice bianca, ma sorprenderla in un mimetismo incredibile e, soprattutto immobile mentre covava le sue uova, non capita tutti i giorni.
Quasi la pestavo per il suo colore incredibilmente simile a ciò che la circondava.
Sono stato poco tempo con lei per non disturbare, ma tanto basta ad includere queste immagini, come anticipavo, tra i miei scatti migliori!

I RABe 535 stanno attualmente subendo radicali cambiamenti: da un lato alle linee di impiego - dopo aver perso il “loro” Lötschberg a fine 2022, presto seguirà la perdita della linea RE6 nell’Emmental, come nella foto. Dall’altro al treno in se, il cui primo esemplare attualmente in revisione sta ricevendo una nuova livrea simile a quella dei MIKA. Insomma, bisogna accorrere: non sarà il più bel treno, ma è comunque un modello ben poco diffuso rispetto ad altre serie di veicoli in Svizzera.

Kurzum, man muss sich beeilen: Es ist zwar nicht der schönste Zug, aber im Vergleich zu anderen Fahrzeugserien in der Schweiz doch ein seltenes Modell.

Le differenze tra i due sono due, l’introduzione della prima classe e di due bagni a bordo. L’ETR 204.015 è ripreso mentre effettua un Regionale Bergamo-Brescia ripreso in partenza da Palazzolo sull’Oglio

Deadvlei
Deadvlei è una depressione caratterizzata da un suolo di sabbia bianca, simile a Sossusvlei; si trova a circa 2 km di strada da Sossusvlei. Il percorso fra le due aree si può fare a piedi, camminando sulle dune. In passato Deadvlei era un'oasi di acacie; in seguito, il fiume che alimentava l'oasi mutò il proprio corso in seguito al movimento delle dune. A questa storia si deve l'elemento più caratteristico di Deadvlei (letteralmente, il "vlei morto"), ovvero un grande numero di alberi morti di acacia, che hanno assunto col tempo un colore molto scuro che contrasta col bianco del suolo e l'arancione delle dune. Si stima che questi alberi abbiano circa 900 anni.
Deadvlei is a depression characterized by a white sandy soil, similar to Sossusvlei; is about 2 km from Sossusvlei. The path between the two areas can be walked, walking on the dunes. In the past, Deadvlei was an oasis of acacia; afterwards, the river that fed the oasis changed its course following the movement of the dunes. This story is the most characteristic feature of Deadvlei (literally, the "dead vlei"), that is, a large number of dead acacia trees, which have assumed in time a very dark color that contrasts with the white of the soil and the " orange dunes. It is estimated that these trees are about 900 years old.

GAZANIA LINEARIS
La gazania è un fiore originario dell’Africa meridionale con un’apparenza simile a quella delle margherite ma dai colori più accesi e di varie tonalità. Il suo nome è ereditato da Teodoro Gaza, umanista e traduttore vissuto nell’epoca bizantina a cui si è voluta dedicare la denominazione di questa speciale pianta.
È famosa principalmente per l’effetto spettacolare dei suoi petali che con la loro varietà di colori ravvivano l’ambiente, ma anche per la sua innata resistenza alla siccità.

Gazania is a flower native to southern Africa with an appearance similar to that of daisies but with brighter colors and various shades. Its name is inherited from Teodoro Gaza, a humanist and translator who lived in the Byzantine era to whom we wanted to dedicate the name of this special plant.
It is mainly famous for the spectacular effect of its petals which enliven the environment with their variety of colors, but also for its innate resistance to drought.

Amici di flickr, non immaginate quanti scatti ho fatto in questi 4 anni, tantissimi e può darsi per qualcuno non dicono niente , ma per me ogni volta è un' emozione diversa; è anche un mio ....come potrebbe chiamare.....un studio del movimento del sole nei miei scatti, per esempio in questa stagione il sole è al lato sx della Basilica di Superga e si sposta sempre più verso a destra e all'inverno si troverà al lato destra della Basilica....e così via della mia piccola passione per le fotografie che ho sempre piacere di condivide con voi amici del flickr.

Cavendish Mews is a smart set of flats in Mayfair where flapper and modern woman, the Honourable Lettice Chetwynd has set up home after coming of age and gaining her allowance. To supplement her already generous allowance, and to break away from dependence upon her family, Lettice has established herself as a society interior designer, so her flat is decorated with a mixture of elegant antique Georgian pieces and modern Art Deco furnishings, using it as a showroom for what she can offer to her well heeled clients.
Today however we are following Lettice’s maid, Edith, who together with her fiancée, local grocery delivery boy Frank Leadbetter, have wended their way north-east from Cavendish Mews on their Sunday off, through neighbouring Soho to the Lyons Corner House* on the corner of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road where they are joining Edith’s parents, George and Ada, Frank’s elderly Scottish grandmother, Mrs. McTavish, Edith’s best friend and fellow maid-of-all-work, Hilda, and Frank’s fellow lodger at his Clapham boarding house, John Simpkin, for a luncheon at George’s expense to celebrate his daughter and Frank’s recent, yet long anticipated, nuptials**. As always, the flagship restaurant on the first floor is a hive of activity with all the white linen covered tables occupied by Londoners indulging in the treat of a Lyon’s luncheon or early afternoon tea. Between the tightly packed tables, the Lyons waitresses, known as Nippies***, live up to their name and nip in and out, showing diners to empty tables, taking orders, placing food on tables and clearing and resetting them after diners have left. The cavernous space with its fashionable Art Deco wallpapers and light fixtures and dark Queen Anne English style furnishing is alive with colour, movement and the burbling noises of hundreds of chattering voices, the sound of cutlery against crockery and the clink of crockery and glassware fills the air brightly.
Amidst all the comings and goings, Edith and Frank sit at a table set for seven, on which a fine repast of a selection of freshly cut triangle sandwiches**** and dainty cupcakes decorated with cream cheese***** icing covered in sugar sprinkles has just been placed by two Nippes. Silver plated tea and coffee pots sparkle beneath the overhead pendant lights, whilst the Lyons’ Corner House dinner service crockery glints and the cutlery gleams against the crisp white napery.
“I’m sorry this isn’t a lunch at Claridge’s******, Edith love.” George remarks to his daughter who sits beside him in her own high backed Queen Anne style chair. “If I could, you know I would.”
“Oh Dad!” Edith laughs happily. She leans over and wraps her right arm around her father and pulls him closer toward her, rewarding him with a kiss on the cheek. “And what would we do there if you could, surrounded by all those wealthy people? We’d stand out like sore thumbs, even in our Sunday best bib and tucker*******!” She smiles at her father reassuringly. “No, a slap up******** lunch here at Lyon’s Corner House is just perfect for Frank and me, thank you, especially since we’ve enjoyed so many lovely times here together as a couple after seeing a picture at the Premier in East Ham********* even before we became affianced. It’s very thoughtful of you, Dad.”
“Well, it’s just as well that I can only afford this then.” George replies. “Although I’ll have to start putting some money aside for your wedding breakfast**********. I’m sure Vicar Dunn*********** would let me have the All Souls************ Parish Hall for the occasion”
“Plenty of time yet before that.” Edith pats her father’s hand reassuringly. “Frank and I aren’t planning on getting married just yet. Not until we have a bit more money behind us to set up home.”
“Clever girl.” George replies with a beaming smile and a snort of pride. “You just keep saving those shillings and sixpences, be abstemious with your spending, and you’ll be richer than Croesus************* in no time.”
“Thanks Dad!” Edith replies, releasing her father’s hand and turning back to Frank.
Turing his attention to Frank’s Scottish grandmother on his left he remarks, “You know, Mrs. McTavish, you’ve done a fine job of raising your grandson,” He looks across the table over the sandwiches, cupcakes, silverware and Lyon’s bill of fare from its head at Frank as he holds Edith’s hand gently in his and caresses it as they both talk with Ada, sitting at the opposite end of the table.
“Och!” Mrs. McTavish says in her broad Scottish brogue with a dismissive sweep of her gnarled hand. “Enough of this ‘Mrs. McTavish’ business! I told Edith that she must call me Gran, just as Francis does, so you must call me Nyree. It’s a pretty name, and it doesn’t get used nearly enough these days. I’m Mrs. McTavish this and Mrs. McTavish that, but never Nyree, and it seems a waste.” She chuckles self-indulgently. “My family were fishing people going back many generations, and Faither************** was a seaman, who sailed to places far beyond the Hebrides*************** where we lived. Not too long before I was born, he came back from what was then the newly formed Colony of New Zealand**************** where he met some of the local islanders who were struck by how blonde his hair was, as they were all swarthy skinned and dark haired.” She chuckles again. “The story he told me when I was no longer a wee bairn, was that they called him ‘Ngaire’, which means ‘flaxen’. Some of his shipmates on the voyage home told him that they named their own blonde daughters Nyree after the name ‘Ngaire’. So, when I was born, I had blonde hair.” She gently pats her carefully set white hair that sweeps out from underneath her old fashioned lace embroidered cap in the style of her youth. “So Faither told Mither*****************that I should be called Nyree. So, Nyree I was christened.”
“Yes, George remarks. “I remember you telling Ada and I that story when you came for tea the first time.”
“Och!” Mrs. McTavish raises the heel of her careworn hand to her deeply wrinkled forehead and rubs them against one another. “I’m a foolish Cailleach******************! Forgive me! The older I get, the more I forget what I have or haven’t told people.”
“Not at all Mrs. McT…” George pauses mid sentence. “Nyree.” He corrects himself. “It was lovely to hear your story again, as it is so interesting. And if I am to call you Nyree, you should call us George and Ada.”
“Then George and Ada it shall be!” Mrs. McTavish replies with a smile and a slight nod. “Did I also tell you the Minister of Word and Sacrament******************* at our village chapel didn’t favour christening me Nyree?”
“No, you didn’t, Nyree.”
“Och yes! He wanted to christen me Nóra. He said Nyree was a heathen name, but Faither and Mither were strong people, and took no nonsense from the Minister. Nyree was the name they had chosen, and Nyree was what I was christened.”
“That’s fascinating Nyree.” George remarks, shaking his head in mild astonishment.
“And as for my wee bairn, Francis, well, I can’t take all the credit for him. His parents, God rest their souls, did a splendid job with him before they were taken by Spanish Influenza. I only helped finish off the job they started. You must be proud of your wee Edith too, and how she turned out – level headed, modest and polite.”
“Oh we are, Nyree, although with the lack of young men due to the war, we did wonder if she would ever meet a fellow to marry, even with her pretty face and pleasant temperament.”
“Och yes, George! Such a shame!” Mrs. McTavish agrees. “A waste of so many lives, that war! I still don’t quite know why we went to war in the first place.”
“You wouldn’t be alone in that thought, Nyree. I think a lot of us are asking the same question in its aftermath.”
Mrs. McTavish tuts and shakes her head sorrowfully. “There are so many young war widows about nowadays. I’m glad that Francis and Edith found one another. They make a nice pair, George.”
“Indeed they do, Nyree.”
“And Francis needs a good sensible lass to keep his ideas in check.” Mrs. McTavish adds with a serious look at George. “We don’t want him getting too big for his britches to not know his place.”
“You sound like my wife, Nyree.” George chuckles sadly. “She was a bit hesitant about his more revolutionary ideas about the working man and his rights.”
“Well, I worry a bit about his ideas sometimes too, if I’m honest, George. He’s a dreamer, not a realist.” Mrs. McTavish confides in George quietly. “I don’t know if I like the sound of all these Trade Union friends of his, filling his head with the rights of the working man. I like young John Simpkin.” She nods over the vase of red roses sitting in the centre of the table to Frank’s photographer friend who helped orchestrate the surprise proposal by allowing Frank to use a portrait photography session in the photography salon in Clapham Junction where he works as a ruse, sitting next to Hilda. “He’s a realist. He just gets on with the job, doesn’t complain, and look, he’s now a junior photographer at the studio where he started. Frank lives with young John at his boarding house, you know.”
“Yes, I believe we have Mr. Simpkin to thank for arranging the venue for young Frank’s proposal.”
“Indeed, we do, George.”
“I must confess that I am more on young Frank’s side than perhaps you and Ada are, Nyree, when it comes to this Trade Unions and workers’ rights business. I keep reading in the newspaper about the plight of the poor miners. It seems to me that it is jolly rotten of the mine owners to reduce the miners' wages and lengthen their working hours. There’s nothing fair about that!”
“And that is why you need an Ada, dear George.” Mrs. McTavish says as she settles back in her seat. “And Francis needs an Edith. She’ll keep his head level, and stop him from getting into any serious trouble.”
“With the Stanley Baldwin’s Government******************** starting to get getting involved with discussions with the Trade Unions about it, I think this may become something we all impacted by sooner rather than later, trouble or not.”
“I don’t see why, George, after all, you’re a factory worker, and I make lace for frock shops in London’s West End. It’s not like either of us are miners.”
“Well,” George mutters with a shake of his head as he clears his throat a little awkwardly. “This probably isn’t fit table conversation for this little party today. We aren’t here to talk about the plight of miners, or politics. Today is about Frank and Edith.”
At the other end of the table, Ada speaks animatedly to Edith and Frank. “That was a really lovely gesture of your grandmother to offer you your parents’ wedding rings, Frank love.”
“Oh, it was a very emotional moment for both of us, Mrs. Watsfo… I mean Ada. Wasn’t it, Edith?” Frank looks at his fiancée.
“Yes it was, Mum! I can hardly believe it! What an honour Gran has bestowed on us.”
“Well, we shall have to get cracking on your wedding frock, Edith.” Ada adds brightly. “Luckily, I had my pin money********************* with me the day I saw that remnant bolt of cream crêpe de chiné in the basket outside Bishops in the High Street. I always knew you would get married one day, my girl.”
“Well, I want to go shopping at Mrs. Minkin’s for trims, Mum.” Edith insists. “I’ll get them cheaper from her than you or I ever will at Mr. Bishops’ haberdashery. Not that there’s any rush to make my frock yet. Fashions change, and we’re not getting wed yet, are we Frank?”
“Not yet Edith.” Frank turns his attention to his fiancée before returning them to Ada. “We want to keep saving for a bit longer yet, so we can set up a proper home.”
“That’s very wise, Frank.” Ada says with a benevolent smile.
“So, I don’t want your crêpe de chine getting wasted making something now that will only fall out of fashion, Mum.” Edith adds. “We’ll make my frock closer to the time, when it comes.”
“And you’re following your own advice then, Edith love?” Ada asks.
“What advice, Edith?” Frank queries.
“Oh,” Edith explains. “Mum agrees with us when we said that I probably shouldn’t tell Miss Lettice that we’re engaged just yet. Not until we settle on a date at least, Frank.”
“I’m sure as a good employer, Miss Lettice would be understanding of Edith wanting to work up until you’re both wed, but,” Ada sniffs with distain. “Well, I’ve known people like her. We all do. They can be fickle.”
“I’m glad you agree with us, Ada.” Frank smiles. “I know you have more respect for the upper classes than I do, but I really do believe that in spite of being a progressive employer, she might dismiss you Edith and then just employ another maid-of-all-work.”
“I still don’t think she would, Frank, and I’ve told Mum the same, but I’m still keeping it a secret just in case.”
“There are plenty of girls from down your Mrs. Boothby’s way that would give their eye teeth for a job as a maid-of-all-work, Edith love,” Ada cautions. “So it’s best to be discreet.”
“Oh, thinking of discreet, Mrs… err… Ada,” Frank adds. “Although she hasn’t said anything outright about it, I think Gran would like to make Edith’s wedding veil.”
“Would she now?” Ada asks in delighted surprise, her eyes gleaming.
“Did she really Frank?” Edith gasps.
“Well, Edith, like I said, she didn’t say it directly as such, but I think in her heart of hearts she does. I think she might ask to see you on your own soon, and ask you once she’s built up the courage.”
“Well, I think that’s very generous of her, Frank love, but it’s your wedding veil, Edith love. How would you feel about Mrs, McTavish making your veil if she offers?”
“Oh Mum! Frank! I’d love that!” Edith enthuses with clasped hands. “It would be so special! You should see her work, Mum! It’s so fine! No wonder she sells to the likes of the fine frock shops she does! I’m quite sure she would sell lace to Miss Lettice’s friend, Mr. Bruton the frock maker.”
“Well, I’ve no objection, if Edith doesn’t.” Ada replies. “Edith and I can make her frock together when the time comes.”
Across from Edith and Frank, Hilda and John sit in quiet and slightly uncomfortable silence, unsure of each other’s company, as they listen to the conversations carry on noisily around them.
At length, John clears his throat awkwardly and asks Hilda, “So… you’re going to be Miss Watsford’s maid-of-honour then, Miss Clerkenwell?”
“I am, Mr. Simpkin.” Hilda replies primly as she places her hands neatly over one another in front of her, clutching the edge of the table. “And you’re going to be Frank’s best man, I believe.”
“I am.” John says proudly, sitting up a little more straightly in his seat. “Have you ever been a maid-of-honour before, Miss Clerkenwell?”
“No, I can’t say I have,” Hilda answers with a ticklish chuckle and a tight smile, looking down into her lap as she removes her hands from the table’s edge and squeezes her napkin in her lap between her fingers. “But then again, you know what they say in that Listerine********************** advertisement in the newspapers.”
“No, I… I can’t say that I do,” John replies with an awkward shrug. “What does it say?”
“Well,” Hilda says with a heavy sigh. “It has a woman in it who is constantly a bridesmaid but never the bride, because of her bad breath, you see. The slogan goes, ‘Often a bridesmaid, never a bride’***********************.” Hilda laughs nervously again.
“You don’t have halitosis, Miss Clerkenwell.” John says with a timid smile.
“Well, thank you, Mr. Simpkin.” Hilda replies quickly, glancing away so that he can’t see the flush of colour in her cheeks.
“So, I know you work as a maid-of-all work for one of Edith’s employer’s friends, but tell me, what is it that do you do, for fun, Miss Clerkenwell?” John asks politely. “I… I err… would imagine that you are always off dancing at the Hammersmith Palais************************ on your days off.”
“No, I wouldn’t say I was always off at the Hammersmith Palais, Mr. Simpkin - only when Edith and Frank ask me, really. I’m not very good on my feet like that. I feel rather like a gooseberry************************* if I’m being honest, not that I would ever admit that to either of them, Mr. Simpkin, so I’d be much obliged if you kept that confidence to yourself. I know they are just being kind to me.”
“Of course, Miss Clerkenwell.” John assures Hilda. “So, if dancing at the Hammersmith Palais isn’t really your thing, what do you enjoy doing, then?”
“Oh, you don’t want to know, Mr. Simpkin. I know you are just being kind too.” Hilda says dismissively.
“No, I really would like to know, Miss Clerkenwell.” John insists.
“It’s not exciting. I’m just a bluestocking************************** at heart.”
At first John doesn’t reply. Then, releasing a pent-up breath from deep within his chest he admits, “Well, working as a photographer, I am not really a dancing chap either.” He then adds, “Nor sporting. I’m probably not exciting either, which explains why no girl is particularly interested in me.”
“So, what do you enjoy doing then, Mr. Simpkin?”
John sucks in a large intake of breath and then exhales. “Well, I read a good deal, and I study books on art and composition to help improve my photographic skills.”
“Do you ever go to the National Gallery***************************?” Hilda queries.
“Sometimes. I like looking at paintings, and learning about composition from them.”
Hilda nods approvingly. “And the British Museum****************************?”
“Oh yes, I quite like the British Museum. It has some fascinating exhibitions.”
“I like it there too.” Hilda remarks, fining herself smiling at John.
“Ahem!”
The sound of George clearing his throat interrupts them, and everyone else around the table who stop mid conversation.
George gets to his feet, a teacup in his right hand. “I’m… err… I not very comfortable giving speeches,” he begins.
“You could have fooled me, Dad!” Edith jeers jokingly, causing everyone at the table including George to laugh.
“But I suppose as father of the bride-to-be, I had better brush up on my oratory skills.” He clears his throat again, awkwardly. “I was just saying to our dear Edith that this isn’t Clarridges, and I know,” He hoists his teacup. “That this isn’t champagne, but for today, I think Lyon’s Corner House and tea will work quite nicely, since the young couple have been here so many times after going to the pictures. Now, as I said, I’m not very comfortable giving speeches, so I’ll keep this brief. So let me just say to Frank, that Ada and I welcome you into the family, and we couldn’t think of a better man to make our Edith happy. And to you Edith, love, your mum and I are so glad that you have found a young man that pleases you so well that you want to spend the rest of your days with him. We couldn’t be happier. So, may I ask you all to raise your glass or cup, and let us toast Edith and Frank. To Edith and Frank!”
The remainder of the company raise their cups and say as one, “To Edith and Frank!”
*J. Lyons and Co. was a British restaurant chain, food manufacturing, and hotel conglomerate founded in 1884 by Joseph Lyons and his brothers in law, Isidore and Montague Gluckstein. Lyons’ first teashop opened in Piccadilly in 1894, and from 1909 they developed into a chain of teashops, with the firm becoming a staple of the High Street in the United Kingdom. At its peak the chain numbered around two hundred cafes. The teashops provided for tea and coffee, with food choices consisting of hot dishes and sweets, cold dishes and sweets, and buns, cakes and rolls. Lyons' Corner Houses, which first appeared in 1909 and remained until 1977, were noted for their Art Deco style. Situated on or near the corners of Coventry Street, Strand and Tottenham Court Road, they and the Maison Lyonses at Marble Arch and in Shaftesbury Avenue were large buildings on four or five floors, the ground floor of which was a food hall with counters for delicatessen, sweets and chocolates, cakes, fruit, flowers and other products. In addition, they possessed hairdressing salons, telephone booths, theatre booking agencies and at one period a twice-a-day food delivery service. On the other floors were several restaurants, each with a different theme and all with their own musicians. For a time, the Corner Houses were open twenty-four hours a day, and at their peak each branch employed around four hundred staff including their famous waitresses, commonly known as Nippies for the way they nipped in and out between the tables taking orders and serving meals. The tea houses featured window displays, and, in the post-war period, the Corner Houses were smarter and grander than the local tea shops. Between 1896 and 1965 Lyons owned the Trocadero, which was similar in size and style to the Corner Houses.

The Gaumont was closed by the Rank Organisation on 6th April 1963. After that it became a bingo hall and remained so until 2005. Despite attempts to have it listed as a historic building due to its relatively intact 1921 interior, the Gaumont was demolished in 2009.

***************************The National Gallery is an art museum in Trafalgar Square in London, housing one of the world's greatest collections of Western European paintings from the late Thirteenth Century to the Twentieth Century. It was founded in 1824 and opened to the public on May the 10th of that year. Its first home was in the former townhouse of banker John Julius Angerstein on Pall Mall, which was acquired by the government along with thirty-eight of Angerstein's paintings which formed the basis of the original collection. It later moved to its current location in Trafalgar Square, with the new building opening in 1838.
****************************The British Museum is a public museum dedicated to human history, art and culture located in the Bloomsbury area of London. Its permanent collection of eight million works is the largest in the world. It documents the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present. Established in 1753, the British Museum was the first public national museum.
An afternoon tea made up with tea and a selection of triangle sandwiches and cupcakes like this would be enough to please anyone, but I suspect that even if you ate everything you can see here on the table in and in the display case in the background, you would still come away hungry. This is because they, like everything in this scene are 1:12 size miniatures from my miniatures collection.
Fun things to look for in this tableau:
The gilt tray of tomato, ham, cheese and cucumber sandwiches and the cream and sprinkle covered cupcakes have been made in England by hand from clay by former chef turned miniature artisan, Frances Knight. Frances Knight’s work is incredibly detailed and realistic, and she says that she draws her inspiration from her years as a chef and her imagination.
The coffee pot with its ornate handle and engraved body is one of three antique Colonial Craftsman pots I acquired from Kathleen Knight’s Dolls House Shop in the United Kingdom, as is the silver tray on which they stand. The silver teapot milk jug and sugar bowl are made by Warwick Miniatures in Ireland, who are well known for the quality and detail applied to their pieces. The Lyons Corner House crockery is made by the Dolls’ House emporium and was acquired from an online stockist of miniatures on E-Bay. The J. Lyons & Co. Ltd. tariff in the foreground is a copy of a 1920s example that I made myself by reducing it in size and printing it.
The table on which all these items stand is a Queen Anne lamp table which I was given for my seventh birthday. It is one of the very first miniature pieces of furniture I was ever given as a child. The Queen Anne dining chairs were all given to me as a Christmas present when I was around the same age.
There are cold winter mornings and then there are really cold mornings. My German father often spoke with vivid similes that have stuck with me for over a half century. On the coldest January mornings on the farm my father used to say he felt like he was standing in his shorts.

NGC 4565 (la galassia Spillo) è una galassia a spirale nella costellazione della Chioma di Berenice.
Si individua con facilità 2,5 gradi a sud-est della stella γ Comae Berenices; si presenta perfettamente di taglio, così appare come un lungo fuso. Per l'intera lunghezza della galassia è ben evidente una fascia oscura, in posizione leggermente asimmetrica rispetto al nucleo, che la rende straordinariamente simile alla nostra Galassia, alla quale per altro si avvicina sia come forma reale, sia come dimensioni. Dista dalla Via Lattea circa 52 milioni di anni-luce.

NGC 4565 (the Needle galaxy) is a spiral galaxy in the constellation of Chioma di Berenice.
It is easily identified 2.5 degrees south-east of the star γ Comae Berenices; it looks perfectly cut, so it looks like a long spindle. For the entire length of the galaxy, a dark band is clearly evident, in a slightly asymmetrical position with respect to the nucleus, which makes it extraordinarily similar to our Galaxy, which, moreover, it approaches both as a real shape and as a size. It is about 52 million light-years away from the Milky Way.

This image collects data for about 240 total hours, coming from different instruments and astrocameras. The image includes a base obtained with data from ZTF survey.
Thanks to the depth reached, all previously known structures are reported. The most evident structure is the main loop which here appears structured in two parallel flows, the second weak loop is also recognizable (the vision is disturbed by the field stars but clearly visible). The stellar stream recently reported is not, in all evidence, the continuation of the first loop, but an autonomous structure that continues blurred beyond.
In this image we see a new stellar stream directed towards the center of the galaxy and partially overlaps the previous one, creating a brighter region.
There are a lot of fakes around this galaxy by some amateurs. This is a cause of disappointment since I have always been a promoter of imaging for study purposes, with poorly processed images in which information is preserved.
NGC 5907 is one of those subjects where the "fantasy" of some is unleashed. The double loop is confirmed by the N-body similations, as reported in various scientific papers ... but it is really very weak and subtle.

The oldest representation of a rose was found in the palace of Knossos, in Crete, dating back to 1600 BC.
The ancient Greeks dedicated it to the goddess Aphrodite and the Romans to her simile Venus.
Homer (around 750-650 BC) reports on them and Herodotus describes, around 450 BC a rose with six petals.
Around 600 BC the Greek poet Sappho sang to the rose as the "queen of flowers", a name that has remained to this day.
In Roman times roses were used (Rosa canina , gallica ) and alba as medicinal plants and for the preparation of perfumes.
At their parties they virtually covered themselves with its petals.
With the fall of the Roman Empire the rose had a period of darkness (along with history in general) until Charlemagne, in 794, in his "Capitulare de villis vel curtis imperialibus", ordered its cultivation as a medicinal and ornamental plant.
This motivated its reintroduction into private gardens and thus, in the Middle Ages, it was the symbol of the love of knights and minstrels.
In Europe, in 1250, there were Rosa alba (white), Rosa rubiginosa (red), Rosa arvensis (wild) and varieties of Rosa canina (dog rose).
Around 1570, the Crusaders brought the Rosa damascena from the East (double fragrant).
There are two groups of this class: the summer damascene (single-flowering) and the autumn (flowering in spring and autumn).
By the 18th century the worldwide love of roses was in full swing, but they were only cultivated in shades of pink and white.
At last, the elusive yellow rose was discovered growing wild in the Middle East, and the European love affair with yellow roses was born.
Yellow is the age-old colour for warm feelings of friendship and optimism.
In many Eastern cultures, the colour represents joy, wisdom and power.
But while any yellow flower will send a lighthearted message.

In the city of Catania (Sicily) in occasion of the feast of her patron Saint Agatha, which took place on the 3, 4 and 5 February (this dates commemorates the martyrdom of the young Saint), and on 17 August too (this date celebrates the return to Catania of her remains, after these had been transferred to Constantinople by the Byzantine general Maniaces as war booty, and there remained for 86 years), when the Sicilian city is dressed up to feast, with a scent of orange blossom and mandarins, and its citizens show that they possess an extraordinary love and bond with the young martyr saint Agatha.
The religious sicilian feast of Saint Agatha is the most important feast of Catania, its inhabitants from five centuries, during the three days of the feast in honor of her "Santuzza" (young Saint), create a unique setting, with celebrations and rituals impressive, which means that this event is regarded as the third religious festival in the world (some say the second ...) after the "Semana Santa" in Seville and the "Corpus Christi" in Cuzco, Peru. Unlike other religious holidays, more sober, to Sant'Agata highlights a vocation exuberant typical of the south Italy, who loves to combine the sacred with the profane.
The cult of the young Santa dates back to the third century, when the teenager Agatha was martyred for refusing the roman proconsul Quintiziano. One year after the death of the young Agatha, on 5 February of the year 252, his virginal veil was carried in procession, and it is said it was able to save Catania from destruction due to a devastating eruption of Mount Etna.
The festivities begin with the procession of the "Candlemas", that are giant Baroque wooden "candlesticks" paintings in gold, each representing an ancient guild (butchers, fishmongers, grocers, greengrocers, etc.), which are brought by eight devotees; the candlemas anticipate the arrival of the "float" of Saint Agatha during the procession. Devotees, men and women, wearing a traditional garment similar to a white bag, cinched at the waist by a black rope, gloves and a white handkerchief, and a black velvet cap, and it seems that such clothing evoke nightgown with the qule the Catanese, awakened with a start by the touch of the bells of the Cathedral, welcomed the naval port, in 1126, the relics of the Holy which fell from Constantinople. On float, consisting of a silver chariot sixteenth of thirty tons, which is driven by a double and long line of devotees with the robust and long ropes, takes place the bust of Saint Agatha, completely covered with precious stones and jewels. On this day the devotees carry on their shoulders the long candles of varying thickness, there are some not very big, others are fairly heavy, but some skim exceptional weights.

Nella città di Catania (Sicilia) in occasione della festa della sua giovane santa patrona Agata, che ha avuto luogo come ogni anno il 3, il 4 ed il 5 di febbraio (questa data commemora il martirio della Santa giovinetta), festa che viene ripetuta anche il 17 agosto (questa data rievoca il ritorno a Catania delle sue spoglie, dopo che queste erano state trasferite a Costantinopoli da parte del generale bizantino Maniace come bottino di guerra, spoglie che ivi rimasero per 86 anni); per questa occasione la città siciliana è vestita a festa con profumi di fiori d'arancio e mandarini, coi suoi cittadini che mostrano di possedere uno straordinario amore e legame con la giovane martire Agata.
Gli abitanti di Catania, oramai da cinque secoli, nei tre giorni della festa in onore della "Santuzza", danno vita ad una scenografia unica, con celebrazioni e riti imponenti, che fanno si che questo evento sia considerato come la terza festa religiosa al mondo (qualcuno dice la seconda ...) dopo la "Semana Santa" di Siviglia ed il "Corpus Domini" a Cuzco, in Perù. A differenza di altre feste religiose, più sobrie, quella di Sant'Agata mette in luce una vocazione esuberante tipica del meridione, che ama unire il sacro col profano.
Il culto della giovane Santa risale al terzo secolo, quando l'adolescente Agata fu martirizzata per aver rifiutato il proconsole romano Quintiziano. Un anno dopo la morte della giovane Agata, avvenuta il 5 febbraio dell'anno 252, il suo velo virginale venne portato in processione, e si narra esso riuscì a salvare Catania dalla sua distruzione a causa di una devastante eruzione del vulcano Etna.
I festeggiamenti iniziano con il corteo delle "candelore", le quali sono dei giganteschi e pesanti "candelabri" in legno, in stile barocco, dipinti in oro, ognuna rappresentante una antica corporazione (macellai, pescivendoli, pizzicagnoli, fruttivendoli, ecc.), che vengono portati da otto devoti: esse anticipano l'arrivo della "vara" di Sant'Agata durante la processione. I devoti, sia donne che uomini, indossano un tipico indumento simile ad un sacco bianco, stretto in vita da una cordicella nera, guanti ed un fazzoletto bianchi, ed infine una papalina di velluto nero, sembra che tale abbigliamento rievochi la camicia da notte con la quale i Catanesi, svegliatisi di soprassalto dal tocco improvviso delle campane del Duomo, accolsero al porto navale, nel 1126, le reliquie della Santa che rientravano da Costantinopoli. Sulla vara, costituita da un carro argentato cinquecentesco di trenta quintali, trainata da una doppia e lunghissima fila di devoti tramite delle robuste e lunghe funi, prende posto il busto di Sant'Agata, completamente ricoperto di pietre preziose e gioielli. Il 4 febbraio, il corteo compie il cosiddetto "giro esterno" che tocca alcuni luoghi del martirio nella città catanese; il giorno dopo, il 5, il corteo percorre il "giro aristocratico", che percorre la strada principale, la via Etnea, salotto buono di Catania. In questo giorno i devoti portano in spalla dei lunghi ceri di vario spessore, ce ne sono alcuni non molto grossi, altri sono discretamente pesanti, ma alcuni sfiorano pesi eccezionali.

Il secondo giorno in Repubblica Ceca sembra partire con un ciel sereno, contrariamente a quanto previsto dai servizi meteorologici, molto bene!
Abbandono di corsa l'hotel a Jihlava e senza perdere un attimo mi reco in treno a Horní Cerekev.
Sono finito qui per cercare di scattare le locomotive 242 di České dráhy ancora in vecchia livrea beige-arancione, che stanno pian piano scomparendo lasciando spazio al nuovo design biancoblu simile alle carrozze.
Fortunatamente si ha ancora occasione di vederle, ma non si sa quanto questo possa ancora durare, e così decido di camminare dalla stazione di arrivo sino a poco dopo il villaggio di Horní Ves, per raggiungere dei posti prestabiliti.
La nebbia è ancora molto bassa e il suolo presenta una quantità immensa di rugiada, contesto buono per l'imminente arrivo della 242.213 che da České Budějovice traina il treno R 653 sino a Jihlava per lasciarlo in seguito nelle mani della 754 che lo porterà fino a Brno.

Der zweite Tag in der Tschechischen Republik scheint mit klarem Himmel zu beginnen, im Gegensatz zu dem, was der Wetterbericht vorhergesagt hat, sehr gut!
Ich verlasse eilig das Hotel in Jihlava und fahre mit dem Zug nach Horní Cerekev, ohne etwas zu verpassen.
Hier versuche ich, einen Blick auf die Lokomotive 242 der České dráhy zu erhaschen, die noch ihre alte beige-orangefarbene Lackierung trägt, die langsam verschwindet und dem neuen blau-weißen Design, das den Waggons ähnelt, Platz macht.
Glücklicherweise hat man noch die Chance, sie zu sehen, aber man weiß nicht, wie lange das noch so bleiben wird, und so beschließe ich, vom Bahnhof bis kurz hinter das Dorf Horní Ves zu laufen, um einige vorbestimmte Orte zu erreichen.
Der Nebel ist immer noch sehr tief und es liegt sehr viel Tau auf dem Boden, ein guter Rahmen für die bevorstehende Ankunft des 242.213, der von České Budějovice den Zug R 653 nach Jihlava zieht und ihn später in die Hände des 754 legt, der ihn nach Brno bringen wird.

Sotto il coro si trova la cripta distinta in cinque navatelle con altrettante piccole tribune semicircolari, struttura simile ad altre cripte spoletine situate nella chiesa di San Sabino e nella basilica di San Gregorio Maggiore. Le colonne utilizzate nella navata centrale sono diverse tra loro, chiaramente materiali di spoglio; la colonna anteriore destra è montata al contrario, con il capitello in basso.
Custodisce all'interno vari resti: sarcofagi, tra cui quello che conteneva i resti di Ponziano, guglie, colonne.
Under the choir is the crypt divided into five naves with as many small semicircular stands, a structure similar to other Spoleto crypts located in the church of San Sabino and in the basilica of San Gregorio Maggiore. The columns used in the central nave are different from each other, clearly bare materials; the front right column is mounted upside down, with the capital at the bottom.
Inside it houses various remains: sarcophagi, including the one that contained the remains of Pontian, spiers, columns.

Built in the Middle Ages (eleventh century), the small church of Sant'Apollinare is located in the main square of the village, in front of the parish church of Saints James and Philip. The structure, simple and gabled, has exposed brick and mullioned windows finished in terracotta.
The church has always been the subject of disputes, the first of which concerns its name and its dedication, since the visiting archbishops called it the Oratory of the Immaculate, whereas since ancient times when the church was a benefit linked to the Basilica of Sant 'Ambrogio in Milan, there was a statue of Sant'Apollinare who gave the church its name.
On the lunette above the entrance door, there are two representations of the old parish churches of Cornaredo. The abbey of San Pietro is presented in such a form as the current ones, while it is interesting to observe how the ancient parish church demolished during the 1800s, had an elegant cylindrical bell tower, very similar to the Ciribiciaccoladell'abbazia di Chiaravalle
The bell gable has a bell fused by the master Antonio Busca and dated 1559.

Costruita in epoca medioevale (XI secolo), la piccola chiesa di Sant'Apollinare si trova nella piazza principale del paese, di fronte alla chiesa parrocchiale dei Santi Giacomo e Filippo. La struttura, semplice ed a capanna, si presenta con mattoni a vista e finestre bifore rifinite in cotto.
La chiesa è sempre stata oggetto di dispute, la prima delle quali riguarda il suo nome e la sua dedicazione, poiché gli arcivescovi in visita la chiamavano Oratorio dell'Immacolata, mentre sin dai tempi antichi quando la chiesa era un beneficio legato alla basilica di Sant'Ambrogio a Milano, era presente una statua di Sant'Apollinare che aveva dato il nome alla chiesa.
Sulla lunetta al di sopra della porta d'ingresso, vi sono due rappresentazioni delle vecchie chiese parrocchiali di Cornaredo. L'abbazia di San Pietro si presenta in forme tale e quali a quelle attuali, mentre è interessante osservare come l'antica parrocchiale demolita nel corso del 1800, presentasse un elegante campanile cilindrico, molto simile alla Ciribiciaccoladell'abbazia di Chiaravalle
Il campanile a vela, possiede una campana fusa dal maestro Antonio Busca e datata 1559.
GAROFANO VIOLETTO
Il garofano (Dianthus caryophyllus) è una pianta perenne ampiamente coltivata per essere utilizzata come fiore reciso.
Le piante di garofano regalano fiori di colori naturali dalle mille sfumature di rosa, bianco, corallo e rosso.
Hanno un aspetto arruffato che si distingue nelle composizioni floreali, e hanno un profumo caratteristico, speziato, leggermente simile ai chiodi di garofano.

Il muscari dell'Armenia è una specie diffusa dalla regione mediterranea orientale al Caucaso, utilizzata a scopo ornamentale in numerose cultivar, che a volte sfugge alla coltivazione e appare allo stato subspontaneo. Cresce in ambienti piuttosto disturbati, di solito nei pressi degli abitati. I bulbi sono commestibili previa cottura. Il nome generico potrebbe derivare dal sanscrito 'mushka' (testicolo), a causa della forma dei bulbi o dell'odore muschiato dei fiori (il termine 'odore muschiato' non ha nulla a che vedere con i muschi: significa simile a quello delle ghiandole paratesticolari di alcuni mammiferi, usate per produrre profumi sin da tempi antichissimi); il nome specifico si riferisce all'Armenia, da cui la specie fu originariamente descritta.

L'uccello segretario o segretario (Sagittarius serpentarius) è un grande rapace per lo più terrestre. Endemico dell'Africa, si trova solitamente nelle praterie aperte e nella savana della regione sub-sahariana. È immediatamente riconoscibile come un uccello molto grande con un corpo simile a un'aquila su zampe simili a gru che danno all'uccello un'altezza di 1,3 m. Gli adulti hanno una testa rosso-arancio senza piume e un piumaggio prevalentemente grigio, con una cresta scura appiattita. L'uccello segretario caccia e cattura la preda a terra, spesso calpestando le vittime per ucciderle. Piccoli serpenti, insetti e piccoli vertebrati costituiscono la sua dieta. The secretarybird or secretary bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is a large, mostly terrestrial bird of prey. Endemic to Africa, it is usually found in the open grasslands and savanna of the sub-Saharan region. It is instantly recognizable as a very large bird with an eagle-like body on crane-like legs that give the bird a height of as much as 1.3 m. Adults have a featherless red-orange face and predominantly grey plumage, with a flattened dark crest. The secretarybird hunts and catches prey on the ground, often stomping on victims to kill them. Small snakes, insects and small vertebrates make up its diet. Although the secretarybird occurs over a large range, the results of localised surveys suggest that the total population is experiencing a rapid decline, probably as a result of habitat degradation. The species is therefore classed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The secretarybird appears on the coats of arms of Sudan and South Africa.
Verso sera al finale con il tramonto, si è creata questa atmosfera: non arrivava il sole a questo albero che ho voluto riprendere ravvicinato, e questo è un albero spoglio con poca neve e .... mi piace tantissimo, io che dicevo che gli alberi spogli sull'innevato non mi piacevano, adesso mi ricredo !
Ammiro questa atmosfera di fine giornata, del dopo-sole, di qualcosa che ancora crea bellezza. Gli alberi li ho sempre ammirati tutto l'anno in tutte le stagioni !

Towards evening with the sunset, this atmosphere was created: the sun did not come to this tree that I wanted to take close, and this is a bare tree with little snow and .... I like it a lot, I said that the bare trees on the snowy I did not like, now I change my mind!
I admire this atmosphere at the end of the day, of the after-sun, of something that still creates beauty. I have always admired the trees all year round in all seasons!

Il Sassolungo, denominato Langkofel in tedesco e Saslonch in lingua ladina, è il gruppo montuoso che divide la val Gardena dalla val di Fassa. È fra i più noti e più splendidi delle Dolomiti, sviluppatosi ben 230 milioni di anni fa.
Il Sassolungo è il gruppo delle Dolomiti alpinisticamente più difficile da scalare e contemporaneamente il più piccolo. Le sue dimensioni alla base sono ridotte ma si sviluppa verticalmente in modo impressionante con pareti verticali scoscese. Il gruppo è un enorme blocco di forma simile a un ferro di cavallo con alle estremità le due cime maggiori: il Sassolungo ed il Sassopiatto e nel mezzo la cima Cinque Dita (2.998 metri di altezza).
Sassolungo, also called Langkofel in german and Saslonch in ladin language, is the mountain range that divides the Gardena valley from valley of Fassa. It is certainly the best known and most beautiful of Dolomite, well-developed 230 million years ago.
Sassolungo is the most difficult group to climb in the Dolomites but the smallest one. Its dimensions are reduced at the base but it is vertically an impressive mountan with vertical walls. The group is a huge block shaped like a horseshoe with on the opposite sides the two major peaks: Sassolungo and Sassopiatto and, in the middle, the peak of Five Fingers (2998 meters).
