Setup used for the "Smoke D" series, with Sigma EF-500 DG Super used in slave mode with a Cactus wireless trigger.
The little desk lamp was only used to get some contrast while focusing.
I took this picture with a Canon A540, and the flash was triggered by the camera's own little flash!

More Maker Faire Orlando setup photos. Many of these were taken as potential source material for my "Micro Maker Faire" layout. This is a sampling of what I have - let me know if you want more setup photos of your exhibit or if I should pull something that's here.

My wonderful "studio"... a.k.a. my basement, two black sheets, staples, strings, and lots of duct tape.
Portable setup for audio field recording with A/B stereo and XY stereo. The flash arms allow easy adjustment of the distance and position of the omni mics (LOM mikroUši Pro). The XY microphones can be used for a slightly more directed recording or omitted to save weight. Positioning the two omnis very close together and close to the sound source gives a "sonic microscope" effect. The flash bracket is ARCA Swiss compatible, so I can use it with a mini tripod as a handle or on a full size tripod. To be used for making recordings of Unnatural Language (www.michaelang.com/project/unnatural-language) at Dinacon in the jungle in Panama. Inspiration from Colin Hunter and Chris Watson.
Vivitar 3500 with cloth diffuser camera left. Product hung 1-2' from black or white background. Triggered with DIY cable.
The experimental setup has a large transmission coil, at the right, connected to the building's electricity. At the left is the receiving coil, and near it is a smaller coil connected to a commercial heart pump sitting in a jar of fluid. Credit: University of Washington
Strobist Info: SB-800 @ 24mm @ 1/32 with DIY Takeout Softbox | SB-80DX @ 1/16 @ 24mm Orange gelled shooting thru Beer Glasses
Camera Info: Nikon D100 | 28-70mm(ƒ/2.8) 70mm | ƒ/5.6 | ISO 200 | 1/60s
Setup for THIS
Here's my high tech, low budget vacuum bagging setup. An old freon cylinder for a reservoir, a compressor from an old refrigerator, a vacuum switch and gauge, and an aquarium check valve...plus a few hoses to connect it all up.
Don't laugh, it works!
Lewis is my lighting dummy. Shot in a parking lot in Glendale. Front flash Sb-25 1/4 power. Rear flash Sb-25 1/64 power 1/8 CTB gel. Fired using Elinchrom Skyports.I would have liked to get the rear flash higher but the location prevented me from putting a stand in the back so clamping it to the window bars had to suffice.
My setup for imaging the sun. A 90mm ETX scope with Thousand Oaks glass filter (well worn)! Camera attached to the back port using various extension rings, and good steady camera tripod for steady images except when there's gales, and press release cable to od away with shutter shake.
twine hangs and can be adjusted here allowing the lower middle flap (the loincloth) to be positioned at whatever height i need it.

This is looking from the camera position. You can see the cooler that served as a table, the foamcore I used as a level base, and the cardboard supports I fashioned on the back of the reflector foamcore so that it would stand up on its own.
for strobists: sb28 on 1/16th power, sitting on the desk behind the bowl, triggered by wireless ebay receiver set - this is the explanation picture for the strobist pool so you can see exactly how I got the picture of the rubber duck.
