No other lights used. I held the reflector on my lap to bounce some light back into my hold cards.

Setup for my first strobist submission by Alan Skinner

You can see the gobo'd SB-900 pointing down and the SB-600 pointed back towards the camera to light up the bottle. I actually had to gobo both sides of the SB-900 since that mirror at the very left was reflecting light back at me from an awkward angle.

A green bottle was chopped and wedged onto the lens. I used a plastic water bottle since it was big enough to fit over the lens and there was no way I was going to be able to slice glass. Plus the bottle had a particularly long neck which worked well for catching light.

That card-looking thing on top isn't any sort of bounce card or anything. It's just there to wedge the bottle into place since it was too big and kept wanting to fall off.

And no... I don't own a proper light stand. It's on my Christmas wish list. That silver tripod isn't even made for cameras. It's an $8 laser level tripod from Sears! I retired it in favor of the Manfrotto as quickly as i could. I'm not trusting all that equipment on that tripod. :-P

You don't need any fancy or expensive equipment to take some great looking photos of your Gunpla.

In this tutorial I'm going to show you how I take photos of my kits using a couple of cheap, widely available items.

This is my photo space, setup on a spare desk. The items I use to shoot my models are; white and black paper, a desk lamp, and a camera. I'm going to explain each element of the photo space.

Black Paper:

The black paper is my background, you want to use a neutral background when you're photographing your kits. Generally if you kit has a lot of bright colors like the Raiser here, you want to use a dark background. Conversely, if you have a dark kit you should use a light background, like a light grey or white.

White Paper:

I'm using the white paper to reflect light from the lamp back onto the model, it helps soften the shadows and provides a degree of back lighting with out needing a second light source.

Lamp:

Any lamp will do if you're willing to color balance your photos after the fact, using iphoto, or photoshop. If you can't or won't color balance try to get a 'natural light' bulb for you lamp.

Camera:

Any camera that takes decent photos from 10-15 inches away will work. For this tutorial all photos were taken using an iphone. Normally I use a DSRL.
