Split light setup - one side of face gets steep top lighting, the other half gets 'up' lighting. I added a flag on the bottom light to prevent some spillage. Also, the lights have tight honeycombs on them to narrow the lightbeam, which helps prevent light spillage as well. Normally, you'd want to try and avoid this type of light like the plague, as it makes faces very uneven and feels a bit bizarrre, as our eyes are trying and failing to make sense of such different lighting directions. That's why I thought I'd call it 'quasimodo' lighting, but if someone knows that it's been used somewhere under any name, please drop me a line!
Ths is fussy light, meaning the model can't really move around at all. Bella was happy to oblige, and I was happy to break out the high-value imported cheese :)

I forgot to include in the setup shot notes that the camera was 7ft from me and zoomed at 80mm.
Walmart king sized white bedsheet! cheap and easily replaceable at 13.00
My computer is running so slow that it took 2 minutes for the type tool to load. I can't deal with it anymore. Tomorrow is reformat day!
I deliberately left the strobe further away to get some bounced fill from the surroundings, in order to really soften things up.
You can still quite clearly see the direct transition zone under the peeled layer of skin on the right, if you view the result below.
This scene partially lit by the visible strobe, and partially by a Nissin 360TW behind the camera, bouncing off the ceiling at 1/4 power and synced with an optical slave.
Two Speedlite 430EXII below an acrylic glass plate with transparent paper and a white paper sheet on the floor.

The setup shot of my final entry for stobist's first assignment:
2 SB25's the front right one is gelled with a blue filter (true blue)
The center back one is behind the white paper, both flashes are at 1/64th power. The 2 spoons were placed on black paper and held in position by a piece of clay.

I just used (indirect) midday light coming in from the living room window. Also, I have a reflector on a light stand to help fill shadows. The blanket is on top of a Boppy. There is a heater to keep Noah warm and cozy during the shoot.

Strobist: Alienbees B400 on camera right, behind model at full power blasting the background to pure white (not a small strobe, I know. It belonged to the girl I was taking pictures of and wanted to try it). Vivitar 285HV on camera right through white umbrella at 1/4 power. Gelled with 1/2 CTO gel for some warmth.

This was taken with Sigma 10-20mm (DX lens) attached to Nikon D3X @10mm without using the DX or 5:4 mode. Interesting vignette. Probably not fixable in post production :P
