Taken in about 1987, this is the bench setup I used to use for showing different types of pressure wave, heat, gases, and occasionally fluids, in air, water etc.
I'm trying to find a negative of some of my results but haven't found any yet. I tell a lie, I found one here.
This was all carried out in the pitch dark with only a bit of light coming from the light source, in this case a projector with a cardboard tube to ensure a "controlled" beam of light. It's all a bit Heath Robinson, especially with the projector sitting on its box on a piece of wood! Needless to say, more than a few shots were ruined by walking into the table in the dark!

Pretty simple setup for this one. A couple of fallen leaves, crumbled up a little bit, and illuminated with yellow & blue lights as an attempt to get some less harsh tones than the default overhead kitchen lights.

Quick and dirty table-top setup in my kitchen. One SB-800 at 28mm, 1/128 power with gridcloth (to take the edge off) on a stand directly over the car, and 1 SB-800 at 1/32 firing through a CTB gel on to a piece of white foamcore. Both were on slave mode, triggered by the on-cam built-in flash. White CVS drawing paper served as a floor and bounced a little light back around the sides of the car. Incidentally, both flashes were on SU-4 (slave) mode at this point as either my D70's manual commander mode quit or the flashes quit listening to it...

Black wool outdoor base layer on top of 5-litre plastic bottle. Flower placed on top of higher section created, with leaves and stem behind, falling to the ground level, so that stem and leaves recede even further from the plane of focus.
Arca Cube GP tripod head makes this kind of shot so much easier to set up, but still have to fiddle with tripod legs to ensure correct working distance for the required magnification/bellows extension.

I just Added a third flash (Quantaray QTB-9500A) to the earlier setup, using an optical hotshoe adapter. (A Normal hotshoe adapter can alternatively use and connected to the third input of the Radio Shack stereo adapter)

Setup for fretboard removal using hand tools and a science lab hot plate.
Heat was applied to the bottom of the neck instead of the fretboard, to prevent melting/scorching the binding and inlays.
The polyester clear finish was scored just below the binding to create a separation line between the neck and binding.
The small piece of luan plywood between the hot plate and the neck created an air gap to prevent burning the paint and the pink foam on top was to help retain heat in the fretboard.
Shot Setup. My small basement studio. Long and narrow, low ceilings. It will just have to do until I upgrade...
Strobist WL 10k, left. Vivitar285hv, right. Bolero #23 collapsible rear.

Canon 430EX on 1/8 power camera left. Sunpack 383 on 1/8 power camera right. White foam-core to make a nice reflective box. Later shots also used a Wescott Apollo softbox in front of the candy and to the left of the photographer. Everything fired with Gadget Infinity 16-channel triggers.

couple minor notes:
NO.1: this SB600 was choked up inside of the umbrella so I can get as much light control of the highlight on Mer dress (Mer's right)…there is a little light spill on her arms, but trying to adjust that would have driven me crazy…it's one of those let slide moments…hahahaha
NO.2: in the setup shot, the softbox is not tilted, we got to playing a little with the lights and I tilted it, I noticed it after I took the setup shot. It was also feathered more to the front of Mer just enough to have some light spill on her back…
hopefully this makes sense, if not, let me know…no worries.
