Setup Shot for 043/365 Backside Disaster.

QUESTION: Can anyone explain how to achieve what the STROBIST is talking about in this article with a Canon 7D and the 430EXII speedlites? I really wanted to to get my shutter over 1/250s today for this but couldn't pull it off and didn't have enough time to mess with it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Quadra battery packs and heads are surprisingly compact and light to carry around. Both heads were powered with own battery unit.
Setup for fretboard removal using hand tools and a science lab hot plate.
Heat was applied to the bottom of the neck instead of the fretboard, to prevent melting/scorching the binding and inlays.
The polyester clear finish was scored just below the binding to create a separation line between the neck and binding.
The small piece of luan plywood between the hot plate and the neck created an air gap to prevent burning the paint and the pink foam on top was to help retain heat in the fretboard.

I found in macro photography, lighting is the most challenging aspect. Played with many combination of flashes, ring flash and finally found this current setup the best of the lot. Canon MR24EX on a Kirk macro flash kit and 2 mini ballhead. Diffusers from Stofen.
The original bracket from Canon is rather restrictive, the Kirk bracket allows me to slide the heads and more flexible on the angles.

I added notes to the best of my recollection. Please hit me in the comments with corrections, since I did not setup or look at all the flashes.
I wanted to make sure someone got a setup shot.
Shooting settings for the real shot were 1/250 f8 ISO100.

couple minor notes:
NO.1: this SB600 was choked up inside of the umbrella so I can get as much light control of the highlight on Mer dress (Mer's right)…there is a little light spill on her arms, but trying to adjust that would have driven me crazy…it's one of those let slide moments…hahahaha
NO.2: in the setup shot, the softbox is not tilted, we got to playing a little with the lights and I tilted it, I noticed it after I took the setup shot. It was also feathered more to the front of Mer just enough to have some light spill on her back…
hopefully this makes sense, if not, let me know…no worries.

Single sb25 from below firing up through the westcott diffuser collapsable panel...a sliver one was placed on top, with shoes to hold it up. I did it upside down like that so that the ball wouldn't dent the silver surface (and I was feeling lazy so didn't want to tear-down the chair setup just yet). Triggered via pocketwizard.

- 580 EXII @ 1/2 24mm into 28" Apollo Westcott Softbox cam left
- 430 EXII @ 1/16 105mm with snoot cam left
- 430 EXII @ 1/16 105mm with snoot cam right
