My telescope setup

Orion AsroView EQ, a 6'' Newtonian on a German Equatorial Mount and a homemade cooling fan.

The flash was held about a foot above the plexiglass. The white cardboard (black on its other side) and the thick fabric were restricting the beam to create a line of light that reflected on the toy. I just had to move the car until I got the effect I wanted. Shot over a plastic mirror.

Since soon I won't be able to take photos outside I've been devising a new setup!

Y/N?

Basic fig. I like the way the photos are coming out cept I need to get a different lamp for the right side of the setup. The one I'm using gives it a funky tinge...

Setup for Strobist Lighting 102: Assignment - Cooking Light. This is minus a white card held above the jug and slightly to the right of the camera sloping down fron eft to right looking from the camera. The aim was to get a reflection in the cooker hob.

Strobist info: Single light setup, using a 20W CFL daylight bulb in a 12"x12" DIY softbox (that's quickly falling apart at the top - duct tape doesn't like heat). Car is centered under the light for this shot.

White A4 paper folded in half are pushed back far enough they only highlight the grill and tail but not the side of the car.

I wanted to bring up the rims and tires a bit without impacting the body. I started with tiny tents of white paper, but they had to be in the shot to get the brightness I wanted. I switched to chrome paper (found at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.) tents, and rounded one side to keep the light just on the tires.

Black mirror is sitting on a 12" dia. concrete tube from Home Depot, which in turn is sitting on my shooting table (the tube comes in handy when the ole back is hurting).

For this shot, which was the first one, I removed the reflectors and had just the softbox. I attached a foam board gobo to it to block all but about 2" of light along the "bottom" edge (the side closest to the camera).

Setup shot for the minimal portrait, though you can only see the corner of the big reflector, and can see more of it here. Notes should explain what little there is.

A shot of my setup used in this shot

I use a soft box I built myself that has 3 individual lights which can be toggled on/off for level of brightness I want. Everything else in my setup as an active light source are cheap clamp style lights..

For bulbs I use the GE fluorescents that have a temp of 6500 k. They are cool and equal to 100w tungsten. I like having the clamps and being able to drape scrims over them to create essentially second and third soft boxes.

Finally I do use mirrors, foam core, flash cards, etc. when needed.

strobist: pretty much self explaining... Yasihca strobe at full power, with homemade snoot.

DAY 71 Setup

Hooraaay! I have my first setup shot! lol!!

This was not really planned, I just wanted a wide shot to see how it throws the light. But then I thought hey this could be a setup shot. So here it is..

I won't do this a lot coz it takes too much time.

Lightning Setup to the photo named 'Vampire' ;)

This is the first shot i've done with my macro studio that i put together this weekend. one day i'll get around to doing some shots of what it actually is made with.

This was the setup shot for today's Photo a Day.

The setup showing an SB-900 triggered via Nikon's CLS, and proving that it is indeed the 24X24 Lastolite modifier.

Setup for the two Wavebird Gamecube controller shots. Nikon SB-24 wireless set off by GI trigger. Sigma EF-500 DG Super optically set off with red gel in background. Shots taken with a Sony F717.

Here is my had built Tortoise enclosure made for my Russian Tortoise Demetri.

This is the setup that I used to take the product-shot of the telephone.

I got a set of 5 honeycomb filters (8 till 36 degrees from Ebay) and wanted to test them out.

On the left the 430EXII flash, on a stand before the flash you can see the honeycomb-grid.

I placed it on a stand so I could turn and tilt it a bit to direct the flash-beam.

Flash fired at 1/8 by 105 mm zoom.

Behind and left from the phone I placed white reflectors.

Near the flash and grid, I flagged the flare of the flash by black paper.

The little Wacom tablet was used to remove the horrible dust, dust, dust and a lot more dust.

Next time I will cleanup before shooting!

Strobist setup shot. SB800 below table to light the background, second SB800 to the right bounced off ceiling, gobo above bottle to prevent reflection (specular highlight) on the bottle. Fired using pocket wizards. I used some post processing to lighten the label. Photo is here.

I received yesterday my first wireless flash trigger and umbrellas. This picture is one of my very first strobist shoots. A very simple light setup : one strobe and one umbrella.

New desk in basement.

Backlighting setup to give a restricted area of light behind a pair of see thru subjects.

Lighting is provided by a pair of 20watt stick type CFL lamps in pringles tube reflectors, to concentrate and direct the light onto a white card backdrop, approx 12 inches/300mm behind the subject.

In addition, a couple of pieces of black card folded into a V shape are stood between the lights and the bottle to prevent any direct light hitting it. With hindsight, these cards would have been better a little further back. Must remember that next time :)

Here's a glimpse of my home office setup.
