Lighting Setup

Setup shot for the shot of Sam. Notes should explain everything.

Blog: www.photosmudger.com/

www.tmphoto.co.uk/

New setup including my new iMac core duo (20"), my 12" PowerBook, Wacom Tablet etc... Oh, and my superb Jensen Speakers... Mmmm soundy goodness!

This is the setup shot fore the ricer: af360FGZ with a neutral density gel at 1/32 placed just inside the ricer, cookie dough scoop placed about 4" away on glass with white foamcore under it.

My Usual setup. From Left to Right: Moleskine Grid Pocket Journal, Moleskine Line Pocket Journal, 32gb iPod Touch, Samsung Alias, Sharpie, Mechanical Pencil, Pen, Book(currently Lord of the Flies)

Here's a setup for the bright field lighting shots that I do, like light reading, which I did specifically for this setup explanation.

Before you read on I need to say that I'm no expert on this - this is solely an interpretation of how I think the bright field technique is performed - so it may not be 100% pure (I have only just started to read 'Light - Science and Magic'!).

In the case of the light reading I used a 50x50cm white sheet of 5mm plastic as the base and put it right on the edge of a table closest to the wall (the wall I used was white - if I was doing a narrow DoF shot then this would be fine itself but usually I use some plastic coated foam board from our local hobby emporium to act as a back drop). I also used a supplementary light to the left of the camera (not shown in diagram) to get the words right on the spine.

For other shots like weight and translucent I use a larger black sheet of plastic.

Note: that glass is probably a better long term solution as plastic tends to scratch easily. Addendum: if considering glass make sure that you can only see one reflection in it and not two like you can with a lot of glass when you look at it from an angle - the colour needs to be dense enough to stop light passing through it.

The light below the table can be anything you like as long as it is bright enough - a flash, a strip light (for even distribution of light across the full plane of the shot) or even a house lamp. I experiment with diffusers and gels on the light to get the effect I want.

addendum: if you publish a photo using this technique it would be great if you could put a link in the description pointing to this article (and also add me to the photo so I know you've used it), so that others can benefit from it too please - many thanks :)

I hope that this is useful.

Have fun!

It's always amazing to me how much different a setup shot looks on the same camera setting with the camera pointed at a different angle.

One thing we are learning very quickly, there is no substitute for a big honkin' diffused light source (even our panel's not big enough) and LOTS of light when shooting cars.

Special thanks to John K. and Dennis S. in setting up this shoot, as well as the owner of Pro-Max for lending us the cars to model. If you are interested in purchasing this vehicle, please visit www.pro-max.com

Strobist:

AB1600 and AB400 1/1 into diffusion panel held high, lighting the side.

One thing worth pointing out here is that we goboed the AB400 and AB1600. In bare tube mode the spill is lighting the roof structs which then gets reflected in the glass. We took my craftsman tool catalog, tore pages out of it and then electrical taped it over the top of the strobes to act as a gobo. :-)

Snooted SB600 for accent lighting on the wheels. Note that it doesn't work as well here as body panels cover half the wheel and that gets lit up unnaturally bright on the rear.

2 generic AC strobes in soft boxes cross lighting the front.

580EX M1/8, diffuser down, driver seat, firing into roof.

430EX M1/4, diffuser down, passenger seat, firing into roof.

The interior of the car is creme colored leather and at M1/1 the insides look like an alien abduction is going on..
