Simple setup for darkfield lighting.
A pair of tracing paper screens with a sheet of black card between them.
A pair of 20W CFL desklamps located behind the black card, which illuminate the screens.
The vase is sat on a glass shelf suspended approx 2inches/50mm above the surface of the table and has a silver reflector under, but I dont think it contributed much, if anything.

This is my setup for a shoot i should be doing tonight (nevermind, it got cancelled), in my living room haha. Strobist: bet you can't guess ;) vivitar on right through DIY softbox at 1/4, vivitar through white shoot-through umbrella 1/16.
Setup for 1 Miller Lite and 3 Miller Lites.
Strobist: An SB800 to the left with a shoot through umbrella. A second SB800 to the right bounced off the ceiling. Fired with pocket wizards. The bottle is inside a tent of white nylon.
Last month we made a pair of drumsets for our friends at the Seaman School District here in Topeka, KS. Now all the middle and high schoolers get the opportunity to play on quality, profesional drums thanks to the work and efforts of their educators! Well done, Ryan Simpson, Cary Stahly and Emory Dease!
Extras after the lighting workshop. Tested one light setups with B2 which is ultra compact battery powered flash that can still give out good amount of light. Tiny flash head worked well with zoom, magnum, umbrella and even 3x4' softbox modifiers. More to come.

This is what we shot for the catalog cover (the full catalog photo session: www.akelstudio.com/blog/studio-lighting-setup-for-a-unifo... ), a close-up shot of one of the catalog boots. Customer wanted to show the boot on a cove and wanted to have the most rich, tasty and sexy (here I’ve run out of my English vocabulary :) look possible. They selected that high black rigid boot with their logo on the front to be shown, all on the black background.

Variation on the setup I showed yesterday, but this time with added colour :)
A pair of Neewer SF-01 mini slave flashes placed each side and pointing slightly outward to reduce the amount of light hitting the black part of the backdrop behind the jar, As I'm sure is obvious, these are fitted with red and blue filters.
To inject a bit of white light also, mounted above is a Yongnuo YN460 dialed down to just 1/32 power and also fitted with a white card flag/reflector, again to direct the light away from the black portion of the backdrop. The flash is mounted on a spring clamp attached to the top f the backdrop.
The two side flashes are activated by Blazzeo SLT-4 (PT-04 TM) radio triggers, while the Yongnuo above uses its optical sensor to slave off the others.
To the front right is a Yongnuo SYD-0808 LED video light which is used solely as a work light and has no impact on the photo due to it's low power compared to the flashes.

Simple setup, 2 flashes directed at the white backdrop. On the left a Yongnuo YN460 with a diffuser and set at 1/16 power. On the right, Canon 430EZ bare and set to 1/8 at 24mm.
The backdrop is a piece of Fax roll, the non shiny side, easy to clean up after, just throw it away :-)
Showing the setup from the front doesnt always give the true story of how the lighting works. So I'm hoping this aerial view might help to show how this darkfield lighting is done. It is worth noting, an additional light was added to the front for this setup shot, to show the components a little better with all the black around :)
Lurking behind this are 3 x 20W CFL lamps. A bare bulb hidden by the black card behind the glass, which is flanked either side by another pair in Pringles tube reflectors lying on the table just below the shelf, pointing back at the white card background.
To the sides are a pair of V shaped screens, with black cards attached to the sides pointing forward and white cards on the sides facing the background. These form the channel through which the light passes from the background onto the glass.
Lurking in the gloom at the front and dificult to see in the dark (you might need to view this large) are another couple of sheets of black card, folded into a V shape to stand up, which help prevent reflections from the rest of the room appearing on the front of the glass.
Now if you can make sense of that lot, well done ;-)
Here's the setup for this shot. I didn't have a lot of room to work with (there's a pile of video game consoles and controllers just off camera to the right), so the setup is a lot closer to the wall than I would have liked. So, I dealt with it and let the light spill onto the wall to create a flat background.
The nitpicky details:
Vivitar 285HV in a shoot-through umbrella on top. Nikon SB-600 in a shoot-through umbrella on the bottom. Nikon D70 with a 50mm/1.8 on a tripod between the umbrellas. All connected via Cactus V2 wireless.
Strobist setup:
- 430 EXII @ 1/8 through 28" Westcott softbox cam left
- 430 EXII @ 1/16 into golden reflective umbrella cam right
- 580 EXII @ 1/2 through 50" Westcott Softbox
- EOS 5D MKII @ ISO 400 1/160
- EF 27-70 2.8 L @ 70mm f/10
- triggered with Phottix Tetra
This is my Fire Photography Setup:
-Canon 30D Gripped with 17/55 f2.8 IS
- Canon Digital Rebel Gripped with 70-200 f2.8 IS
-Used set of Wichita Fire Department turnout gear
-Ben II Plus Helmet
-Reflective Vest
-Pelican Case with Velcro inserts
-Motorola MTX8250 Radio
-Radio Shack Scanner
-2 Motorola Pagers (Different Departments)
Hastily put together setup to try out the idea, little did I expect how polished the result would be :)
Light is provided by a Yongnuo YN460 set to 1/8th power into the mark2 version of my mini softbox providing the backdrop. The flash and radio trigger can just be seen in the gloom behind.
Out front, a polythene business card box with a CD case on top (note how dirty it is here) to provide the reflective surface.
Thats about it, not sure if the results would have been any better if I had taken the time to set it up properly with nicely polished glass, might yet try it, but doubt that the results would be any better.

Setup for 'Gutter Salt', an exhibition of street photography at Cellar Door, 16 Woo Hop St., Sai Ying Pun tonight 22nd August.
Setup used to take the sliding splash photo.

For the shot a flash (580) is placed on a second tripod aiming at the background (not shown here). I tried several backgrounds but found that the blue one gave the best result.
I build up a small track from some duplo Lego I stole from my son. I hot glued a piece of acryl on the small rail wagon (yes I know I properly ruined the wagon…). A top of this I glued a wine glass with 10 sec glue (my wife don’t know yet). At the end of the track some Lego is placed to stop the train (and glass).
The glass/train is pulled with some thread.
The photo was taken manually with a wired release some few 10th sec after the collision.
My 580 was placed just left to the collision spot aimed at the blue background.
After taken the shot I was not satisfied with the background (not blurred enough) so I replaced it in Photoshop with a gradient one with the same color so it matches the color seen in the glass.

Stayed up all night, this photo was taken during the wait for the Fajr prayer.

Table top setup. The room is lit by sunny daylight, but camera and flash are adjusted to block this out (flash to max power, camera to t=1/100 s). Otherwise the two color temperatures would mix. Another nice advantage of using a strobe light instead of daylight: One can easily choose ISO 100 and still shoot without tripod.
Setup for a shoot i did today, first day of decent weather.
My brother who's back from college needed some new pictures.
Got a few good ones of him and of my friend cody.
I'll post them up as i get them edited.
