I was beyond excited when this bird landed in my backyard. I've only seen them a handful of times and even then, the looks are usually not great. I've been so envious of my Canadian friends :)

Finally a wasp I can love!! LOL... the bright blue/ purple iridescent wings brought it to my attention as it hunted in the mulch along the edge of the house. A quick google search gave me the name Rusty Spider Wasp.... and what does this wasp eat? SPIDERS! Wow. I need More of these wasps. I'd be happy to point out a few spiders for it to take home to it's children for dinner! Oh my.....

This is a close-up photo of a rust covered iron panel and algae covered wooden beams on the wharf at Port Maitland Beach.
A mild HSS photo. I edited the bg layer to be b&w but left the whatsit coloured. I don't know what the whatsit is called. I want to call it a latch, but that's not really what it is.

This is an adult non-breeding female Rusty Blackbird. They nest mainly in the Boreal forest wetlands and unlike the much more observed Brewer's Blackbird, they are solitary breeders. Breeding male Rusty and Brewer's Blackbirds are easily confused. They both have pale yellow eyes and are both glossy black overall. The Brewer's has a slightly thicker bill.
