Rusty Blackbirds - Jonathan's Pond near Gander, NL
According to Cornell University the Rusty Blackbird has undergone one of the sharpest and most mystifying recent declines of any North American songbird. The North American Breeding Bird Survey estimates that populations declined by 4.4% every year between 1966 and 2014, resulting in a cumulative decline of 89%.

We have a flock of approximately 500 blackbirds drop into our yard several times a day.
Along with grackles, redwings and cowbirds there have been a few rusty blackbirds.
Euphagus carolinus
The Rusty Blackbird feeds mostly on insects and plant matter, but it sometimes attacks and eats other birds. It has been documented feeding on sparrows, robins, and snipe, among others.

On the barren wilderness of Dungeness I came across this old abandoned rusty anchor.
I chose this composition to make it look like the bulldozer in the background is coming towards it, to push it away.
The sky was moody, a heavy grey and it rained shortly afterwards, which affected the number of shots I took today.

After a week of sparrows, it is perhaps high time to move to “other birds”, and here is a very special one, a Rusty Blackbird (probably a female). These birds have shown a dramatic drop in numbers likely due to loss of habitat, but they are found in Central Park. At the Loch, Central Park, New York.
