This painting perfectly captures all the grace, charm, and elegance of the high society of late XVIIIth-century France. Happily, these two ladies and their children survived the Revolution. The shimmering blue-pink silk of the Marquise de Pezay’s dress, and the stripes on the Marquise de Rougé’s, are beautifully rendered. The obvious friendship between the two women, and the love of the children for their mother, which shine through the paint, are very touching.
Little did these people know that only a few years later their luxurious, charming, pampered world would collapse around them. This to me makes this picture particularly poignant.
This painting remained in France, in the family of the Comtes de Rougé, until 1960, when it left its homeland after having been purchased by the Wildenstein Gallery of New York City. In 1964, the painting was purchased by a private foundation, which immediately gifted it to the National Gallery of Art, where I frequently have the opportunity to admire it. Admission to the NGA is free.
