Found this spot a few days ago on a very cloudy & misty night & knew that I had to return to get a sunset shot. This was before the sun had set and saw a lovely view of rays! Few more shots from this location to come :)

I like to shoot water reflections. A while back my flickr friend copeg posted a shot of rays reflected in an alpine lake ( www.flickr.com/photos/copeg/1372482546/in/set-72157605045... ) that I liked a lot. I'd never seen that situation myself. Now I have!

I cloned out a light pole and crane on the distant horizon here.

Another fantastic wedding yesterday, and it was hard to go wrong with Csilla.

This divan was sitting under an incandescent light, which was fine except it brings unattractive light right on her head. So my assistant and I gaffer taped a gobo (fancy index card) over the light to direct it down the wall, and lit her with the lowel.

Always be prepared for what the sky will offer, even with clear skies. This image was taken 30 minutes after sunset. These faint rays would have been spectacular if I had been out 15 minutes earlier. Rats! Venus at top center.

A few blocks away from Burrtec is Ray Gaskin Services. They used to be located right by me in Baldwin Park but a few years ago, moved their entire operation out here unfortunately. Here are a few of their newest trucks.

Crepuscular rays (more commonly known as sunbeams, sun rays), in atmospheric optics, are rays of sunlight that appear to radiate from the point in the sky where the sun is located.

These rays, which stream through gaps in clouds, are columns of sunlit air separated by darker cloud-shadowed regions. Despite seeming to converge at a point, the rays are in fact near-parallel shafts of sunlight.

Their apparent convergence is a perspective effect, similar, for example, to the way that parallel railway lines seem to converge at a point in the distance. The sun rays do converge to the sun, but the sun is much farther away than the rays might make it look like.

Crepuscular rays flooding the St Davids area of Pembrokeshire with sunlight on a brisk November day.

This picture is from a trip I had out some time back. The weather got bad really quick and the rays were there only for a few minutes, so the focus is a bit off. But when I got home and looked at the picture it made me think of my late father who passed away last January. And a poem my wife showed me suddenly came to mind. It´s a poem written in 1932 by Mary Elisabeth Frye, and it goes like this:

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sun on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there; I did not die.

Waited and waited and waited for the rays to come out, I knew it would happen at one point given the way the clouds were and the sun slowly lowering itself. Managed this before the sun burnt away most of the clouds...! Was a bit pissed off these two likely folk walked into frame just before the magic moment but I quite like it now.

A beautiful and long-lasting display of anti-crepuscular rays seen from Lossiemouth West Beach. Taken mid-afternoon, about 45 minutes before Sunset, the light was quite spectacular. This is facing north-east, directly away from the setting Sun.
