Well it looks like I will be moving out of the Bay Area and it's looking more and more likely I will be returning to the foothills near Yosemite. We are excited about it but man I hate moving so I decided to bum this one back up on my photostream. This is one of my first and still most popular shots. Can't wait to be back in the woods.
If you have chosen to enter Yosemite from the south entrance along Highway 41 you will first get a few fleeting glimpses around the bends of the Valley that will cause you to wonder if what you just saw was real. It seems too big, too distant. Surely your eyes are just playing tricks on you. The trees will quickly obscure your view and you will drive along directly into the face of the mountains via Yosemite's longest tunnel. Because it's such a long tunnel and you may begin to relax but grip the wheel tight as you approach the exit for the view you are about to see will wrench your eyes from the road in disbelief!
There is good reason for the flashing yellow light warning you to slow. Suddenly before you lies an impossibly massive scene of snow topped granite towers, soaring waterfalls and pristine forests. Possibly the most photographed icon of nature lies before you an impossible view simply called Inspiration Point though some refer to it as the tunnel view. A "U" shaped glacier valley lies a thousand feet below you. To the left of the image, the impressive, largest single piece of exposed granite called El Capitan is the most dominate object in Yosemite Valley. Early explorers, unable to believe their eyes, estimated the rock at only 900ft above the valley floor. They simply could not fathom it's real height. Modern measurements eventually put it well over three times that height at nearly 3000 feet above Yosemite Valley. To the right, a towering waterfall whipped by the blowing winds in the narrow canyon appropriately named Bridal Veil Falls. While not the tallest, it is definitely one of the more beautiful waterfalls in Yosemite. In the far distance, another seemingly impossible large chunk of granite cut in half by the glaciers appropriately named Half Dome rises above the valley. But it's not over yet, you have only begun the start of a dream like drive that will take you all the way up the valley past numerous waterfalls, the meandering Merced River and lead you to Yosemite Falls which will makes Bridal Veil Falls look like a tiny trickle of water. If you are a photographer, you could easily spend your day at the entrance as the scene will change by the minute, especially in winter, but push on, as there is much to see.
Winter and early spring in Yosemite are a quiet time and possibly the best for photography if you don't mind driving on cliff walls in the snow. The summer crowds have yet to arrive. The campgrounds are empty and except for a few cars driving though the valley the roads are clear. And though you may stick to the outhouse seats there are few drawbacks to visiting during this time of year provided you bring the proper gear for you and your car. If you can, plan your visits to coincide with the breaking of a winter storm. Yosemite staff are good at keeping the roads open and you have a good chance of getting the proper conditions for some stunning photography as the clouds break. I spent 5 years of my life living just outside the park. My only regret is that digital photography was only in its infancy at the time.

Alittle windy Saturday here and this cigar (performance boat) boat decided to try a few waves on Lake Michigan and the lake took a good hit to them. They turned around came back in the channel and noticed water coming in fast. Went to the north side of the channel and jumped up on the walk way and the back of the boat sunk right there in about 20 ft. of water. Sunday a float boat (rescue boat) came in and put air bags on bottom and floated it up and they towed to Irish Marine. Expensive joy ride on Lake Michigan was quite costly to that owner.
Put up to celebrate the Smile on Saturday groups 100th theme - 'One hundred smiles'! (15-Dec-2018)
Hi everyone - it's a pleasure to be part of the Smile on Saturday group :-) Maria you've done such a good thing with this, and your other groups. You, and our other lovely moderators, do a fantastic job, and are amazingly supportive of everyone - Thank You!
* This is something I haven't done to-date - put up a photo of me (I'm the human in this shot). The exposure is a bit scary!
Early this Spring one of our regular library visitors brought in a couple of 2week old lambs, and I got to cuddle this one for about 10 minutes - it was absolute BLISS!
This was not taken by me - one of my workmates took it on her cell - the quality isn't great, but the experience was the BEST thing ever :-D

My partner pointed this bird out to me and said it was a Bustard - I told him to mind his language!!!!
But no really it IS a "Bustard" - Dictionary definition - modification of Middle French "bistarde", from Old Italian "bistarda", from Latin avis tarda, meaning literally, "slow bird" (although it is not slow)!
Allan knew it was a Bustard because In the UK another member of the same family the "Great Bustard" became extinct in the British Isles between 1832 and an artificial reintroduction to Salisbury Plain in 2004. It forms part of the design of the Wiltshire Coat of Arms - A County in Southern England in the area where we come from.
see greatbustard.com
The South African Kori Bustards are HUGE looking like a cross between an ostrich and a monitor lizard. Except for feathers, the kori bustard seemed reptilian, with piercing yellow eyes, thick long legs ending in tiny feet, a stiletto-like bill, and a long grey & black-peppered neck.
Kori Bustards are large, heavy, mainly terrestrial birds. It is the heaviest bird capable of flight, although this title may also belong to the similarly-dimensioned Great Bustard. However it avoids flying if possible. It spends most of its time on the ground, foraging for the seeds and lizards which make up most of its diet.
The male Kori Bustard averages at about 110 cm (3.7 feet) in length and stands 60-90 cm (2-3 ft) tall. An average male bird would weigh about 13.5 kg (30 lb), but exceptional birds may weigh over 20 kg (44 lb). A report exists of a 34 kg (75 lb) bird, but it is not verified and must be beheld with skepticism because it so much heavier than any other recorded weight for a Kori Bustard. The female Kori Bustard averages 7.7 kg (17 lb) and is usually 20% shorter than a male. The Wingspan is 2.4 meter (7.9 ft) -
So bearing that in mind - if you one coming towards flying at low level you I would duck!!!!! Image being hit by something about twice the size of two large Christmas Turkeys. Once they do get off the ground, the bustards, despite their large size, are able to fly at a high velocity (60 kilometre/hour)
The southern subspecies (Ardeotis kori kori) is distributed in southern Africa in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, southern Angola, South Africa, and southern Mozambique. Kori Bustards are birds of wide, open grasslands, and lightly wooded savanna. The subspecies kori can be found in arid savanna areas where trees are scattered intermittently, they are fond of areas where the grass is short and where there is a good view of the surrounding area. Migrations in response to rainfall and/or food supply have been recorded, but the species is not migratory in the true sense.
The distribution of the kori subspecies is becoming fragmented and overall, declining in numbers. Local extinctions have been recorded. Given the continual habitat destruction from agriculture and development, hunting pressure, and a slow reproduction rate, Kori Bustards do not face a promising future in the wild. Many Kori Bustards are poached for local consumption, mainly by men over 30, Snares or Guns are used to kill birds. In some areas only tribal elders are allowed to eat bustard meat. Sometimes a traditional doctor is brought in to 'treat' it before it is eaten, because of a belief that bustard meat can otherwise cause mental illness.
There is evidence of illegal cross-border trafficking in live bustards from Botswana, up to 10 at a time are smuggled into South Africa where they are sold as a delicacy to wealthy individuals or exported outside Africa.
Soo Line 1003 puts on a show for photographers during what can best be described as a fan trip.
The Wisconsin chapter of the National Railway Historical Society was celebrating 75 years. What better way to celebrate than by chartering Steam Locomotive Heritage Association to operate their beloved 1913-built Mikado from Hartford, WI to Burnett, WI & return.
The trip featured the 1003 tender first from Hartford to Horicon, when 1003 then did a small freight move to run around it's train and shove to Burnett.
In Burnett a large crowd was gathered for photo opportunities, watch the crew load coal, and see the engine up close and personal. As far as I can tell, my wife and I were the only ones representing Minnesota.
Seen here, the 1003 is on it's return from Burnett towards Horicon, where it'll take on water before finishing the trip to Hartford. The crew was more than generous with the smoke.
Soo 1003 was one on my bucket list, sure glad I can check it off with a shot like this. I wouldn't mind seeing it again someday, but opportunities have been difficult to take advantage of, and the clock on 1003's boiler is ticking.
I put up a tutorial on InnovaLUG's website about how I made the roof for my Age of Empires II Market creation.
Read the tutorial on the website:
innovalug.com/post/74/weathered-shingle-roof-tutorial
Because it's not a step-by-step kind of technique, you just experiment with the connections and with how much of a weathered look you want until you're happy with the results. The post on the website goes into more detail about the process if you're interested.
That would be at Coalca siding, just south of Oregon City, on the former SP line. If the Coast Starlights are running close to on time, this is where they'll meet. Here's the southbound, #11, casually strolling down the siding while the northbound, #14, is coming up behind me on the main. I've been out of action for a little while. I had knee surgery back in late November and everything went well. So, now my right eye has decided that it felt under appreciated, so it is acting up now. It's severely dry, hurts, and my vision is blurry. I'm taking special eyedrops for it and I also have to put an ointment in it four times a day. In the meantime, I've gotten myself a nice birthday present, a Nikkor Z lens, the 100-400 mm zoom, which I used to take this photo. I even cropped it down, too. I am so good at buying myself presents that my friends and relatives should just send me money and say "you're welcome."

More awesomeness to come soon! ∆
FIRST FRONTPAGEWUTTTTT? #41
So I finally got to do a photoshoot!
These pictures came out so well, by the time I'm done with this series you will be sick of my photostream.
This is my lovely friend Annelise and myself. Two models, thats new for my stream! haha
I hope you like these, because I love them.
Albuquerque puts on one of the most brilliant, colorful, stop-you-dead-in-your-tracks shows. The scaping sky transforms into a vibrant watercolor painting, the city takes on a warm hue, and bright paint pots of color burst across the cloud line.

Pictures with Zeke, Joaquin, Garett and Andy at their house. The kids are Jewish, Mestiza (Mexican Indian/Spanish) and Cherokee. I love taking pictures of siblings, but it was also neat to work with brothers. Somehow I managed to get a bunch of sisters together, but this is the first brother set. They're the same as girls in the sense that they are young and respond well to the camera. I like how two brothers can have the same parents but such different hair. I suppose that will also be more evident when I put my eventual self portraits up with Rachael's.
Joaquin was a total ham. You can see in some pictures he's literally dancing in the background. Or the foreground. But hammy kids always love the camera, so I love them. Zeke, the older boy was not as energized, but he had a quiet brooding intensity that photographed well, too. I've learned so much about working with young people on this project. I can say I'm a fan of their energy and passion.
I decided to put out another figbarf when I was feeling bored, and here they are from left to right.
Aquaman-Once again my love for the classics shines through, this Aquaman is based off the classic design or as some of you may say super friends, none the less I like how this one turned out.
Joker-This one is based off Alex Ross art, and Suicide Squad, I painted the green on a black hair piece so the color isn't that bright, the torso is a classic penguin toros.
Tony Zucco-When I was reading through Levi Nyuna's Nightwing series I saw this design for Zucco and thought it looked great, so I translated it into flesh pieces and I thought it was great.
Batman Year One-This classic Batman is a design i showed before but now I'm putting it in a showcase and think it looks better in this lighting.
Jason Todd's Second Suit-I ordered a classic Robin torso for my Tim Drake Robin since that looked more accurate, so I had this torso laying around and It looked more like the Under the Red Hood Robin so I put it on him and I love how it looks.
Firefly-A very simplistic design, i used the back of an old spaceman torso along with a firefly head with the white painted black, I then used the spaceman batman's wings, personally I think this is one of my simplest and favorite designs for a Batman villain.
Put on a parka, some thermal undergarments and hiking boots this morning and braved it out to the lake. The fog did not disappoint once my fingers warmed up. ;-)
BTW, the dock will look like it is protruding into space. That is because the lake level has been lowered by 8 feet for the winter.
We put crampons on on boots for a walk in the park. They more or less worked, but it was silly to try to walk on a path that was a combination of slush and ice on such a miserable day. We soon thought better of the venture and turned back to walk the dry sidewalks of downtown.

At the great reno balloon race they put on a great show around 5:00 AM before the sun comes up. It was truly a sight.

I had the opportunity to go to Iowa City, IA to see and photograph the Bald Eagles, they put up a nice show for some great photo opportunities!
Put the Canon FD 28mm 3.5 SC lens that is stuck at f3.5 on a reverse macro ring on the Canon 5D Mark II and took it out to get some shots of snowflakes on my mitten.
Thanks for visiting my little space here on Flickr.

This little red squirrel has decided to set up house in our home! At first he was putting walnuts in this SUV in our front yard which he fill to the brim! There was at least 200 nuts in this vehicle! Then it started putting nuts on our roof. It sounded like he was bowling.
We found out she had 2 babies because my husband heard this racket in our ease-through. It sounded like something was trapped. He cut through our soffit and this big nest fell out, along with a baby! The next day another one came out fro our attic. They both made it! And are running around and happy.
