Regular Flu Has Killed Thousands Since January
By Doug Gross
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
There had been no confirmed deaths in the United States related to swine flu as of Tuesday afternoon. But another virus had killed thousands of people since January and is expected to keep killing hundreds of people every week for the rest of the year.
That one? The regular flu.
An outbreak of swine flu that is suspected in more than 150 deaths in Mexico and has sickened dozens of people in the United States and elsewhere has grabbed the attention of a nervous public and of medical officials worried the strain will continue to mutate and spread.
Experts are nervous that, as a new strain, the swine flu will be harder to stop because there aren't any vaccines to fight it.
But even if there are swine-flu deaths outside Mexico — and medical experts say there very well may be — the virus would have a long way to go to match the roughly 36,000 deaths that seasonal influenza causes in the United States each year.
"That happens on an annual basis," Dr. Brian Currie said Tuesday. Currie is vice president and medical director at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York.
Since January, more than 13,000 people have died of complications from seasonal flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's weekly report on the causes of death in the nation.
No fewer than 800 flu-related deaths were reported in any week between January 1 and April 18, the most recent week for which figures were available.
The report looks at deaths in the 122 largest cities in the United States.
Worldwide, the annual death toll from the flu is estimated to be between 250,000 and 500,000.
About 9 out of 10 of those deaths are among people older than 65, Currie said. Most times, they already have health problems that the flu makes worse, he said.
"Regular influenza can be taxing," he said. "It causes their underlying disease to decompensate and then they don't have the reserves to get through it.
"While it may not be the direct cause listed on the death certificate, it certainly contributed."
One of the reasons medical experts are nervous about the swine flu outbreak is that many of the people who have died in Mexico have been young and otherwise healthy. The strains found in the United States have so far been weaker.
But even the regular flu is sometimes fatal for younger victims.
"It's not unheard of. It happens, either directly from influenza or they get a bacterial superinfection" like staph, said Currie.
While researchers haven't developed a vaccine to fight the new swine flu, it can be treated with antiviral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza, the same drugs used on the regular flu.
Many times, seasonal flu itself is tough to prevent because it has mutated to a form different than it was when the vaccine was made.
Seeking to put the swine flu outbreak in perspective Tuesday, Los Angeles County public health officer Dr. Jonathan Fielding echoed other public officials calling it "cause for concern, but not for alarm."
"Given the size of L.A. County, given the traffic between here and Mexico, it would be very surprising if we didn't have any cases," Fielding said.
He said the county, where the CDC had confirmed 10 cases of swine flu by Tuesday, sees more than 1,000 flu-related deaths every year.
"So it would also not be surprising if there were deaths with swine flu — even if it had the pattern of seasonal flu," he said. "Thus far, the pattern we see in the United States is very similar to that of seasonal flu — relatively mild to moderate cases."

this is the view from sitting on top of the "UFO" about a mile down the road from "Lizard's Mouth". awesome place to hang out and catch some rays. wish we had a cooler full of ice and cool drinks for the trip today :/ we had to call if quits after a few hours because we were all craving some sort of drink.
I pass this spot every day on my way to Boyle. For me it's one of those spots I use as a backdrop to assess and measure light and note the passing of the seasons. It's situated at the bottom of the Curlews which are just visible at the top of the frame. It was unusual to see the cattle in this field, it was under a foot of water a few weeks earlier, I just had to stop to record them. The light was very poor, nothing new about that this Summer, so I struggled a bit with camera settings. Obviously, I wanted the foreground subject to be sharp but I felt the background, on the top thirds line, also deserved to be relatively sharp. I figured a small aperture of f/11 would be appropriate but this would not give me a shutter speed fast enough to hold the 200mm lens steady while I balanced myself in the middle of the ditch! I had to open the aperture to f/7 and be satisfied with a speed of 1/100. I also had to bring the ISO up to 320. The cattle were very cooperative and stayed fairly still, a tripod would have given me the shot I wanted but I had to settle for this.
In the end, the background is softer that I'd hoped for but I felt the pleasing composition of the foreground group compensated for that.
I reckon this was taken in 1983 , making me about 18. Im the one who doesn't look like im in a Wham! tribute band.
My MG cost me £1500 and didn't stop costing me money from the day i bought it until the day i got rid of it several years later ! It had so much body filler in it it was technically a sculpture !!!

Meet Danny.
While out shooting in North Beach for My Surrounding Neighborhoods project, I came across a very kind man playing the harmonica (didn't catch his name) asking for change at the corner of Columbus and Green. As I walked by, we made eye contact and he stopped playing in order to chat with me. "Hey man, can you help me out at all?" I replied to him describing my Dollar Portrait Project and he asked if I could give him $5. I explained to him that the project was specifically for $1. When I thought he agreed, knowing I didn't have a dollar on me, I told him I'd be right back. I went into a nearby restaurant, broke a larger bill for change, and headed back to the corner.
Upon arrival, the man told me he didn't want his picture taken, but he knew someone who wouldn't mind. He called over Danny who was actually waiting outside of the restaurant I was just in. He came running over and the other guy explained to him, "This man will give you a dollar for a picture for his project." Danny was nothing but smiles and agreed immediately. Unfortunately, lighting wasn't good, so the picture above is a bit grainy (taken at 1600 ISO) and slightly blurred (taken at 1/10 of a second), but I did the best I could, placing Danny next to a large advertisement providing some light so I could take the picture without my on-camera flash.
After I took Danny's picture and gave him the promised dollar, I asked him how long he'd be in San Francisco. "16 long years, can you believe it?" I told him I couldn't and asked where he was prior to. He told me he came over from Alabama. I continued pressing asking him if he came straight across or if he stopped anywhere between. Danny responded simply, "That's a long story," so I asked him to give me the short version. He quickly explained that he took crate trains across the country until he made it to San Francisco. When I asked if he had a place to go to in the evening, he said, "I stay here and there. Sometimes I stay at this nice place that is $12 per night, but that's why I'm doing what I'm doing...I also get a dose of Methadone, since I'm not shooting anymore, and that cost me $10 per day. I'm doing what I can, you know?" I responded, "Good for you! Glad to hear you are taking care of yourself." He told me he was waiting for a guy to come out of the restaurant because he was going to give him some food, so he wanted to head back over to the door. I let him go and wished him well, shaking his hand as I walked away.
As I passed the original corner (we had been slowly walking toward the restaurant the entire time), the original guy said, "that seemed to go well." I agreed and thanked him. He responded, "You have a great night now," and I wished him well back.

view on black is highly recommended
Normally I don’t post multiple versions of the same photo. I have this thing about having more than one final product: I feel like I haven’t completed the task at hand of working toward the one best picture to represent the feeling or concept I was aiming for. Too many choices just leave me at the tip of indecisiveness, unable to move forward.
However, this time is an exception for several reasons.
The color version reminds me of the movie 2046. By no means is this picture anything like the cool, sleek futuristic trains from the film. It is just a reminder a favorite movie of mine. Also, there’s something about the color green that symbolizes and represents the future for me.
The black and white version basically summarizes the feeling I get when I travel. Metro, train, bus stations and airports are filled with thousands of people going about their businesses. Passengers rush from one stop to the next, people talk private conversations on their phones, it is so busy and exhaustive that I sometimes just get lost in the midst of it all. It is crowded, but people are all in their own little compartmentalized world. Life’s color has been stripped away.
A de tallado Laguna school Calvary Scene
ESTIMATE: PHP 150,000 - 200,000
Mid-19th century
Laguna
Medium hardwood, polychrome, gesso
107 x 58 x 19 cm (42 x 23 x 7 1/2 in)
One of the most dramatic and powerful Passion images in Christian art is the Calvary Scene. The characters—the Crucified Christ, the detachable Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross, Saint John the Beloved on the right, and the Sorrowful Mother on the left—on their own plinth bases, are usually arranged in this conventional and almost linear formation. Each is masterfully carved in the distinct Laguna diagnostics: large and well-proportioned figures made from medium hardwood, usually fruitwood; classic treatment but with provincial, organic demeanor; and the use of vegetable dyes in strong colors of vermillion, blue, green, yellow, and rose on the figures, as well as on the bases. The carved bones on the cross provide a symbolic allusion to Mount Calvary as the burial place of Adam and Eve. The outstanding craftsmanship of the whole assemblage, its size, and proportions strongly suggest a church or a visita origin.

Ecocentro Danaus (<-- video) is located a couple miles east of La Fortuna Costa Rica. It's a fairly small reserve, 600 meters of walking trails, but boy, do they pack a LOT in such a small area. Danaus was created about 13 years ago when some forward thinking people decided it might be better to grow life than cut it down. Danaus is like a mini oasis since it's completely surrounded by pasture and cattle land. Here's what Ecocentro Danaus says about itself: 'Ecocentro Danaus is an ecological reserve that preserves a natural regenerating secondary forest. Many different biological processes take place here and there is a great biodiversity of flora and fauna in its natural state.'Danaus is worth a look if your in the La Fortuna area and you need something to do for a couple hours.

A very rare 'Baul Mundo' or traveling trunk
Estimate: PHP 500,000 - 700,000
18th century
Manila
Kalantas (Philippine cedar)
31 x 46 x 27 cm (12 x 18 x 10 1/2 in)
Provenance:
Formerly from the family of Rosita Mercado of Lemery, Batangas
Whether used for travel or domestic storage, this chest follows a long tradition of trading chests: from the Arabs of the Indian Ocean to the Iberian sailors crossing to the Americas and Asia, and later from the Manila Galleon Trade and back to the Americas.
During the Age of Exploration in the 13th century up to the European discovery of new routes to the Americas and Asia in the centuries onwards, voyagers needed to store their clothes, jewelry, letters and other precious possessions in containers that would protect them from the harsh conditions at sea. Spanish Cordoba chests and Peruvian chests were made from red cedar wood and covered with tooled leather. Secured with metal hardware, they became the pinnacle of necessary luxury in travel. The vegetable-tanned soft leather was the ideal surface to stamp auspicious symbols and decorative motifs.
This handsome dome-top trunk's unusually smaller size suggests it may have been made for less bulky but nevertheless important items. Carved masterfully in low-relief to resemble Cordovan leather, the arabesque designs of North African Moorish motifs such as palmettes, scrolls, fronds, and geometric shapes were carefully arranged in rows. The hand-forged tongue and scallop-edged lock plate, and the side-carrying handles are made of iron.

My dad moved with his mom and new stepfather to Santa Fe in 1933, when he was nine. Eventually they moved into this house, on Don Gaspar, about a mile south of the Capital. At the time, it was the southernmost house in Santa Fe. According to him, he could see all the way to Albuquerque.
My dad was lucky~
My grandfather didn't believe in owning things, especially real estate. So he never bought this house, and, eventually the Reeds didn't live there, anymore.
The house is still there. The last time I drove by, about four years ago, it was the least fixed-up house in what is probably a multi-million dollar neighborhood. I always wanted to get it back, but not so much, anymore. Still, something in me really loves this house. It's a beautiful house.
Scanned from one of many old tiny but exquisite black and white photos that somebody in my family took. I'm slowly contemplating the idea of rescanning this photo at a higher resolution and digitally editing it very carefully, something I didn't do when I did these the first time.
Today (Monday, November 30, 2009), is the second anniversay of my dad's passing. I decided to honor him a litte bit over the next few months by fixing up and sharing some photos of his extremely interesting life.

In August 2014 the Hamilton County Commissioners voted to put on the ballot for this November a one-quarter of one percent sales tax increase that by law is limited to five years to fund the restoration of Cincinnati Union Terminal.
The tax would generate nearly $172 million in revenue-- and when it is combined with historic tax credits, contributions from the State of Ohio, and philanthropic fundraising efforts it will allow for the complete repair and restoration of Union Terminal.
Hamilton County residents will not be the only ones paying for this. The Economics Center at the University of Cincinnati analyzed and determined that approximately 47% of the sales tax collected in Hamilton County comes from people who live outside the county, thus relieving the tax burden on local residents.
Additionally, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the sales tax increase would cost the average resident just $23 per year. The Hamilton County Commissioners also put in the proposal that by law this increase would end after just five years.
The successful passage of Issue 8 will allow us to preserve Union Terminal and guarantee that it will continue to be an essential part of our region's great heritage. Future generations will benefit from our investment now-- ensuring that our children, and grandchildren, are able to enjoy Union Terminal.
Decades of time, outdated construction techniques and years of freezing and thawing have taken its toll on Union Terminal. But, repairs can be made to the exterior envelope of Union Terminal to prevent water damage and to the steel structures underneath, making the building fit for a very long time into our future. Additional repairs and renovations to outdated mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems will make Union Terminal more efficient and create more opportunities for activities within the building.
There are many ways to become involved with the campaign. First and foremost is to make sure you are registered to vote by October 6 and vote 'Yes' on Election Day, November 4th.

During my lunch hour today I wandered down to the Water of Leith for some dipper shots. Got a few okay ones but mostly throwaway. On my way back to the office my attention was drawn to loud chirping in the trees at Belford Road and to my delight around 6 Long-tailed tits were hopping about. Out of the corner of my eye I saw two land on a nearby branch and one of them began hanging upside down. It took a second to realise that it was dangling helplessly because its wing had somehow got stuck. Now that I've scrutinised the shots, it would appear that the wing is literally glued to the end of the branch where some sap is.
The poor thing dangled helplessly as the rain started and the wind picked up. Other long-tails landed beside it and looked down in what appeared to be a show of concern. They certainly knew something was wrong. There was lots of anxious tweeting. Eventually the bird managed to pull itself up enough to start pulling away at its wing feather. To no avail at first, and I really thought it was going to end up dying there.
But the story has a happy ending as the wee thing eventually managed to rip its wing free, with minimal damage it would appear. I hope so anyway!
Does anyone know if this is a common occurence. I'm aware that tree sap is extremely sticky and could act like a sort of glue to a delicate feather but surely this kind of thing doesn't happen too often.

Reversed lens Canon 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.
I've been playing around with reverse lens macro shots because I'm keen to see what lies beyond the reach of my dedicated macro lens. It's not easy as I have been hand holding the reversed lens to the camera body which makes it hard to avoid movement at the high level of magnification. I also find it a good chance to get a bit of extra use out of my other lenses before I make any decisions to buy another one.
Last night, my son had a friend around as I was playing with my lenses and shooting the detail on gerbera flowers that my wife got for her birthday. I heard him say to my son, "What's your dad doing?" I jumped in and said I was practicing macro photos and my son quickly said "Why don't you get in touch with your masculine side and shoot arm-hairs instead of flowers?" After having a laugh (and then beating them to a pulp and sending them off to bed), I took a few more shots and got some I quite liked, even if they are a bit feminine.
