One of the most dramatic and powerful Passion images in Christian art is the Calvary Scene. The characters—the Crucified Christ, the detachable Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross, Saint John the Beloved on the right, and the Sorrowful Mother on the left—on their own plinth bases, are usually arranged in this conventional and almost linear formation. Each is masterfully carved in the distinct Laguna diagnostics: large and well-proportioned figures made from medium hardwood, usually fruitwood; classic treatment but with provincial, organic demeanor; and the use of vegetable dyes in strong colors of vermillion, blue, green, yellow, and rose on the figures, as well as on the bases. The carved bones on the cross provide a symbolic allusion to Mount Calvary as the burial place of Adam and Eve. The outstanding craftsmanship of the whole assemblage, its size, and proportions strongly suggest a church or a visita origin.
