Another view of the Saiho-ji garden - Koke Dera (Moss temple) Kyoto
Old temple with heartshaped moss garden, designed in 1339.
You can't visit the temple itself. To visit the garden you need to make a reservation at least a week beforehand via a letter/postcard with return postage/card and you need to join in a ritual including painting/writing down a wish before you can visit the garden. It rained all morning, making it look even amazingly greener than it already is. Quite a challenge to photograph though, while holding an umbrella too :-)
The maple leaves were already starting to change colour in August.

Abe BIRNBAUM •
* 18 November 1898 in New York City, NY.
✝︎ 19 June 1966 in Lenox Hospital, New York.
The New Yorker — November 18, 1951.
Issue 1918 — Volume 37 — Number 40.
About BIRNBAUM ↓
Abe Birnbaum painted nearly 200 covers for The New Yorker magazine.
Mr. Birnbaum's last New Yorker cover appeared on the issue of May 28. In the bold and simple lines that were the stamp of his style, he drew two white sails on blue-green water under a broad blue sky.
Mr. Birnbaum represented people and objects in their most uncomplicated terms. A Lincoln Day cover several years ago showed only the hint of a stovepipe hat and some red, white, and blue bunting.
He contributed more portraits and drawings to the magazine's Profile and Reporter at Large sections than any other artist. His portraits, done in pen and ink and brush, reduced the face in one or two lines to what it was supposed to be a profile.
▪️Versatile Illustrator
Mr. Birnbaum did portraits of Henry Moore, the sculptor, and Abe H. Feder, a theatrical lighting man. In addition, he drew hockey players, hurricanes and illustrations for articles on television, smoking and cricket.
The magazine also used thousands of Mr. Birnbaum's spot drawings on inside pages that punctuated and indented columns of type. For one long story on burglary, he drew a keyhole that was described as "the most intensely keyhole keyhole there has ever been."
Mr. Birnbaum was an exacting craftsman. In the studio of his home in Croton, N.Y. surrounded by most of his 15 cats, he would draw an object such as a chair 200 times or more to get it right.
"Nothing is ugly," he said often. "Everything is what it is."
Mr. Birnbaum also drew illustrations for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and The New York Times Sunday drama section. He had illustrated several books, including "Green Eyes,” which a jury picked as the best-illustrated children's book of 1953. The most recent book he illustrated is another juvenile title, “Did a Bear Just Walk There,” by Ann Rand.
▪️ At Art Students League
Born in Manhattan, Mr. Birnbaum studied at the Art Students League under Boardman Robinson and Kenneth Hayes Miller.
Mr. Birnbaum had held exhibitions at the Carnegie Institute and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Feliz Fin-D para todos!!
Lowering from Tirso de Molina in Madrid you are with the Market of the Barley , an interesting construction with its great glazed surfaces of geometric forms and their curved ceilings, in this occasion while it looked for the dusk in the Real Palace I was with a beastly backlighting that it enchanted to me, with the water splashing in the Source of the Place of the Barley and those branches of the tree on crystals .....
I shot and I did not obtain but that what you see here down, I embroiled with the photo and the PS...
this was what I obtained, something extreme and different…

The leopard has just hunted during the night this Springbok, take it up to this acacia.

I wanted to reproduce the type of mysterious image with lights and shadows found in hollywood thriller movies. The color image was yellowish and unappealing. When transposed in B&W, the contrast and shadows created immediately the mood. The silver car waiting at the end of the street creates also a point of interest and one can imagine it part of the crime scene where the killer inside waits for his walking victim....
Of course this is pure imagination. In reality, the streets of Prague in this area - at the footsteps of the Castle - feel very safe.

RAF Binbrook was opened in 1940 as a Bomber Command station and later became home to some of those mighty fine Javelins and Lightings in the 1960s. The last planes left the base in the late 1980s.It was clear that once these rooms would have been very impressive. Today, there was little left. RAF Binbrook was the location of a fairly interesting mystery in 1970. If you are a UFO buff, then this is fairly interesting. If you are not, then I wouldn't bother.

'Collingwood Terminals' On Black
A few recent shots of the Collingwood Terminals building, a landmark from both the water and land of Collingwood, Ontario. It was a bright sunny day but with the wind chill, it was probably -30C. So cold that you could not work without gloves and I had to keep ducking back into the car to keep from getting frost bite.
This building has been the subject of much debate about its fate. At one point there was talk about putting a restaurant on top of it which would provide a spectacular view of the area, but the costs apparently did not make this feasible. A local paint store agreed to donate the paint if the Town would provide the labour to repaint the exterior. From a distance it appears white, but as can be seen up close, it is quite another matter. Once again, the labour costs proved to be too much and this idea failed.
Never the less, if you have ever driven into Collingwood on HWY #124 or approached it on the lake, there is no mistaking this landmark.
PS:
Story about the Town of Collingwood considering the sale of the Terminals to a group that would put a condo building between it and the water, leaving the south side as is.

They pay taxes as any French citizen does,
But they do not have the same rights and often live with fear because without identity papers it’s hard to live serenely.
They claim identity papers to stop leaving with the fear of been reconducted in their birth country,
They claim identity papers to improve their living conditions in a country which is today their country,
But French Government said no to a massive regularisation of their situation.
This is the daily fight of the so-called ‘sans papiers’.

Wednesday, 09 August 2017: Hakone - Odawara - Kyoto
Left Hakone and the cool mountain climate on the local bus to Odawara (小田原市) (10m above sea level) where we had time for a quick nip to look at the castle before getting the Shinkansen (新幹線) to Kyoto (京都市), arriving just after midday.
[I did lose Rosa just before we were due to get on the bullet train to Kyoto - which almost gave me heart failure!]
HOT but clear skies so not so humid.
Left overnight bags at the Hotel Ibis just across the road from the station and headed out on the local train network to Gion district - for onomoyaki (? It's a savoury pancake filled with tasty things) at a bar/restaurant that was popular with American troops in World War II (with saucy souvenir drawings on the walls to prove it!) and then the shrines / temples and our walking tour of Gion (but no Geiko or Maiko). We did see lots of Japanese tourists dressed up in traditional dress at Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社) though, and tried our hands at ringing the 'love' bells... and chilled out with the dragons in the Kennin-ji Temple (建仁寺).
We got back to the hotel around 7.15pm and after a speedy shower each, nipped out for take out from one of the station kiosks. All a bit Russian Roulette on the veggie front. Indeed, the only real area where things have been tricky so far has been meals out. It's fine when Charlea is around but when we are completely DIY there have been a more misses than hits.
My feet are v tired, and we've another long (hot) day out and about tomorrow!

Heres the deal: Today I tried to get an awesome "got milk'-esque portrait of me with a chocolate milk mustache because my mom randomly got a gallon of awesome chocolate milk for my brother and I. Before doing the shoot, while I was searching Flickr, particularly the Strobist group, I stumbled across this picture. I used it as inspiration, and once I gave up on the milk mustache thing, I just decided to copy this kid's awesome expression. Thanks to Thomas Atterbom for his spectacular and photographically inspiring image.

Viewed from its south side, the Van Vorst Building located at 415 Boren Avenue between Republican and Harrison Streets, was a century-old building once used as a furniture warehouse and stable for the Frederick & Nelson department store and their delivery-wagon horses. It later became the C.B. Van Vorst mattress factory. This property, currently owned by Paul Allan, is now half demolished to make room for office space for an anticipated 4000 Amazon.com employees. Paul plans to preserve the historic façade. Fair well Van Vorst Building of the South Lake Union neighborhood, Seattle, Washington.

The Indian Peafowl, Pavo cristatus, also known as the Common Peafowl or the Blue Peafowl, is one of the species of bird in the genus Pavo of the Phasianidae family known as peafowl. The Indian Peafowl is a resident breeder in the Indian subcontinent. The peacock is the national bird of India.
The species is found in dry semi-desert grasslands, scrub and deciduous forests. It forages and nests on the ground but roosts on top of trees. It eats mainly seeds, but also some insects, fruits and reptiles.
Peafowl are most notable for the male's extravagant display feathers which, despite actually growing from their back, are known as a 'tail' or a train. This train is in reality not the tail but the enormously elongated upper tail coverts. The tail itself is brown and short as in the peahen. They are a result of sexual selection and are displayed as part of courtship.

CASTELLANO

Me explico.

This is Rod, whom I met manning the Hat Point fire tower. Rod is originally from the Seattle area, where he is a stage director. We chatted for nearly an hour, as he happened to be an avid medium format / Canon SLR shooter. In fact, he had a 20D with the 100-400 attached under his desk. This Summer (2008), was Rod's 16th season doing fire lookout for the NPS, a diversion which he's been doing since 1969. He also really enjoys stage photography and knows a number of pros around the north-west United States. He was staying in a cabin a few miles back from the tower. Rod was a pleasure to talk to and was quite an interesting fellow. You can visit his website at www.fineandperformingartsphotography.com/

Cape Town (Afrikaans and Dutch: Kaapstad; Xhosa: iKapa) is the third most populous city in South Africa, forming part of the metropolitan municipality of the City of Cape Town. It is the provincial capital of the Western Cape, as well as the legislative capital of South Africa, where the National Parliament and many government offices are located. Cape Town is famous for its harbour as well as its natural setting in the Cape floral kingdom, including such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point. Often regarded as one of the world's most beautiful cities because of its geography, Cape Town is one of the most popular South African destinations for tourism.
Cape Town was originally developed as a victualling station for Dutch ships sailing to Eastern Africa, India, and the Far East more than 200 years before the construction of the Suez Canal in 1869. Jan van Riebeeck's arrival on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town quickly outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at the Castle of Good Hope. It was the largest city in South Africa until the growth of Johannesburg and Durban.
According to the 2001 Census, the city has a population of 2.95 million.[2] Cape Town's land area of 2,499 square kilometres (965 sq mi) is larger than other South African cities, resulting in a comparatively lower population density of 1,158 people per square kilometre (2,999/sq mi).[2] Cape Town is town twinned with Nice in France and Haifa in Israel.
View On White -- So I didn't made it last time hanging around much longer in Flickr. I hope I'll do better now. I kinda miss it but on the other hand I'm glad I have time for other "important" things in life.
South Texas is in a 20 month drought and the few thunderstorms are welcome but simply not enough.
These islands in Lake Travis are a sure sign for this drought. This was taken mid June and when I drove by last week I think it was even worse.
I made a seven bracket shot here with the intention for some HDR image but couldn't get a satisfying result. The different pieces of software were all overwhelmed by the data (especially the gradient around the sun) and manual blending overwhelmed yours truly. So I ended up selecting the most promising image and did some "regular" Photoshop wizardry.

The Gage Homestead, built in 1796, captures the way of life during the early 19th century. The Gages worked the land with their ten children and became a strong voice in the hamlet of Stoney Creek. During the War of 1812, the family fled to the cellar as the Battle of Stoney Creek raged outside. The Battlefield Monument stands as a symbol of peace and commemorates those soldiers who died on June 6, 1813.
Nestled under the Niagara Escarpment, this historic site is located on 32 acres of park land linked to the Bruce Trail, Canada's oldest and longest footpath.

Georgetown after the storm. The sky remains torn and in heretic, but it gives to this photo all its power. The sea is still restless and we can almost smell the rain on the wooden pier of the fishing village of George Town. The crow is leaving from its refuge where it waited the rain to stop...
The fishing village was once a very high place for the trade of different goods between Asia and the Great Britain as Malaysia was its colony. Opium was a common good that was traded there and you can witness many signs of this activity.
Now the fishing village is more a touristic attraction. No international trade is on-going there anymore, since the maid harbor is in Kuala Lumpur and the worldwide famous harbor of Singapore. Now tourist are wandering on the wooden piers, among the houses. Local chinese are still leaving there, houses have no air-cond, all doors are open.
If you go there, try to imagine this place at the time of Francis Light and it may help you to enjoy even more the place.

Freezing rain is a type of precipitation associated with a temperature inversion airmass in cold climates. It is described as precipitation that begins as snow at higher altitude, falling from a cloud towards earth, melts completely on its way down while passing through a layer of air above freezing temperature, and then encounters a layer below freezing at a lower level to become supercooled. This water will then freeze upon impact with any object it encounters.[1] The ice can accumulate to a thickness of several centimetres, called glaze ice. The METAR code for freezing rain is FZRA. Freezing rain is notorious for causing travel problems on roadways, breaking tree limbs, and downing power lines. It is also known for being extremely dangerous to aircraft since the ice can effectually 'remold' the shape of the airfoil.
Usually freezing rain is associated with the approach of a warm front when cold air, at or below freezing temperature, is trapped in the lower levels of the atmosphere as warmth streams in aloft.[3] This happens, for instance, when a low pressure system moves from the Mississippi River Valley toward the Appalachian Mountains and the Saint Lawrence River Valley of North America, in the cold season, and there is a strong high pressure system sitting further East. The warm air from the Gulf of Mexico is often the fuel for freezing precipitation.
Freezing rain develops as falling snow encounters a layer of warm air usually around 800 mbar (800 hPa)level, then the snow completely melts and becomes rain. As the rain continues to fall, it passes through a thin layer of cold air just above the surface and cools to a temperature below freezing (0 °C). However, the drops themselves do not freeze, a phenomenon called supercooling (or forming "supercooled drops"). When the supercooled drops strike ground below 0 °C or anything else below 0 °C (power lines, tree branches, air craft), they instantly freeze, forming a thin film of ice, hence freezing rain.

The Barnsdale tunnel is a very straight 1226 yards in length, and was opened in the 1880's. The last passengers would have peered out into the dark in 1932, although trains steamed through here until 1959. This is part of the Hull and Barnsley Railway. You may know know this railway from other tunnels, such as Weedley, Sugar Loaf and the big monster Drewton Tunnel, all nearer to Hull. It's a nice one as local residents objected to it being fenced off. There are three capped airshafts in the Barnsdale tunnel. Most of the brickwork in here is in fairly good nick, although in parts bricks have fallen away.
Hi All,
Had the pleasure of going down south on Sunday for the hunt of a nice sunset shot. So many potential spots im looking forward to photographing over the coming weeks/months.
This one is a little different to the usual sunset shot i take, the sun is directly behind me and was set for a few minutes before i fired off this shot.
The horizon didn't look that flash as there were massive clouds far out on the horizon which hindered the spectacular colours we usually get.
This shot was taken down at Yallingup, its quite a walk over slippery rocks to get out to this point, if you're not careful you could easily fall in and be taken out or 'tap' a rock.
Please don't try remind me of the dust spots littered throughout the sky, its making me depressed as it is. I think i spent, collectively, about an hour trying to pick majority of them out and i could easily spend another cleaning more up.
anyways I hope y'all enjoy the shot :)

Ever the apologist, here I am again justifying lack of activity on this site (and some others) over the last year or two (the list of other time-suckers can be found here). What's the justification this time? Well, it's a good one.
While travelling around the globe a couple of years ago, I started doing some technical editing for Sitepoint. It was a great way to earn a bit of money to pay my way while not getting in the way of moving from place to place - no bar work or fruit-picking for me! Much of this editing work was carried out in the back of my van in the late hours while my wife-to-be snoozed. When I returned to UK after travelling, I was approached about some more potential writing work. Despite the fact that I knew I had an extremely busy year ahead of me, somehow I felt brave enough to take it on. Over seven months, while dealing with two house sales, buying a new house and making tentative wedding plans, I spent many evenings working on this project. Today, for the first time, I saw the evidence that it was finally coming to fruition - Sitepoint have added the book to their 'coming soon' section.
So, what's the book about?
At this point, it might be worth re-reading this post about the poor state of many beginner web design books on the market. The reason for my trip to the book shops was to really get a feel for what's out there and to make sure that I was on track with what I was writing. I couldn't have been happier at how bad it was - it made me realise that what I had started writing for Sitepoint was much needed and much overdue.
Who is this book aimed at?
Well, chances are it's not aimed at you. As much as I'd like to say it's a cutting edge book about CSS tricks that you and I love to peruse, or an accessibility book with a slightly different angle than those currently out there, it's neither. This is what it is:
It's a book that you can give to your web newbie mother/sister/auntie
It doesn't presume any foreknowledge of HTML or ownership of any expensive/fancy web authoring software (nor does it suggest going out and buying any)
While it's for beginners, it's not going to call anyone a dummy ;-)
It's a web design book that refuses to teach bad, outdated practices as a way of getting eye-catching results more quickly than the 'proper' method. For example, the first time you will see page layout covered is with CSS in chapter 4. Tables are covered - but in a chapter about managing data in tables, just where they should be .
In short, it's a book that aims to teach complete beginners how to build web sites that conform to web standards such that they won't need to unlearn bad practices at a later date, or even know that those bad practices exist.
Well, I've talked it up so much, about time I provided a link:
Build Your First Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS
Publication date is March/April (I believe the latter ismore likely). If you think you know someone that this could be of benefit to, please do add your name to the notification list (by joining the Sitepoint Book Buyers' Club). I am looking forward to seeing the finished result ... and I really do wonder what bizarre and completely off-topic picture this book will have on the cover!
7 shot HDR via photomatix and Lightroom, Photoshop used for smart sharpen only, and the last shot of 2009! Have a happy new year, personally I think 2009 has been pretty good to me, sad to see her go!
Spent the day at the City Methodist Church with Josh Merrill and Mitch Manz. Josh is a flickr contact, we hadn't met before, I hadn't met Mitch till today either. Anyway we had a great day exploring the expansive Church - the place is huge... 3 floors, Theatre, Gym, class room, the works! Awesome fun with some awesome photographers in an awesome place for photographers
