Please forgive me for the following tantrum and indulge me just this once. It's not often I have a rant on flickr.
I get sick and tired of "proper" wildlife photographers having a go at those of us who choose to photograph in a zoo. To suggest that all the animals pose nicely and make photographing them a doddle, with no challenge or skill involved whatsoever, is misleading, ignorant and unfair. There is always skill involved in capturing any animal, whatever its surroundings may be, and other zoo photographers will vouch for the fact that there are certain challenges that a wild environment does not present, such as reflection, glare, and enclosure design.
If a photo is nice, and you get something out of it, does it matter what the story behind it is? Sure, a tale about being charged by a silverback or nearly stampeded to death by a herd of pissed off elephants is maybe a tad more exciting than "I waited for over an hour just to get this shot" (see above) but the bottom line is a good photo is a good photo is a good photo. I suspect that much of the disdain directed at zoo photographers is driven by a disapproval of zoos in general, which has nothing whatsoever to do with photography now does it?
Just for the record, I highly, highly respect those who are lucky enough to photograph animals in their natural envornment. I'm deeply envious of their skill and their opportunity. But why must certain elitists take the pleasure out of this hobby for those of us without the same privilege as them? Please don't tell me that I've got it easy or that there is no skill involved when I'm damn proud of the images I produce and the time and effort I put into them. Your superior and dismissive attitude really is unwelcome and ugly.
As copied from this post on Accessify:
Ever the apologist, here I am again justifying lack of activity on this site (and some others) over the last year or two (the list of other time-suckers can be found here). What's the justification this time? Well, it's a good one.
While travelling around the globe a couple of years ago, I started doing some technical editing for Sitepoint. It was a great way to earn a bit of money to pay my way while not getting in the way of moving from place to place - no bar work or fruit-picking for me! Much of this editing work was carried out in the back of my van in the late hours while my wife-to-be snoozed. When I returned to UK after travelling, I was approached about some more potential writing work. Despite the fact that I knew I had an extremely busy year ahead of me, somehow I felt brave enough to take it on. Over seven months, while dealing with two house sales, buying a new house and making tentative wedding plans, I spent many evenings working on this project. Today, for the first time, I saw the evidence that it was finally coming to fruition - Sitepoint have added the book to their 'coming soon' section.
So, what's the book about?
At this point, it might be worth re-reading this post about the poor state of many beginner web design books on the market. The reason for my trip to the book shops was to really get a feel for what's out there and to make sure that I was on track with what I was writing. I couldn't have been happier at how bad it was - it made me realise that what I had started writing for Sitepoint was much needed and much overdue.
Who is this book aimed at?
Well, chances are it's not aimed at you. As much as I'd like to say it's a cutting edge book about CSS tricks that you and I love to peruse, or an accessibility book with a slightly different angle than those currently out there, it's neither. This is what it is:
It's a book that you can give to your web newbie mother/sister/auntie
It doesn't presume any foreknowledge of HTML or ownership of any expensive/fancy web authoring software (nor does it suggest going out and buying any)
While it's for beginners, it's not going to call anyone a dummy ;-)
It's a web design book that refuses to teach bad, outdated practices as a way of getting eye-catching results more quickly than the 'proper' method. For example, the first time you will see page layout covered is with CSS in chapter 4. Tables are covered - but in a chapter about managing data in tables, just where they should be .
In short, it's a book that aims to teach complete beginners how to build web sites that conform to web standards such that they won't need to unlearn bad practices at a later date, or even know that those bad practices exist.
Well, I've talked it up so much, about time I provided a link:
Build Your First Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS
Publication date is March/April (I believe the latter ismore likely). If you think you know someone that this could be of benefit to, please do add your name to the notification list (by joining the Sitepoint Book Buyers' Club). I am looking forward to seeing the finished result ... and I really do wonder what bizarre and completely off-topic picture this book will have on the cover!

Shoulda
Before I hung up the phone all I could hear
Was the dial tone ring in my ear
If I could go back in time
I'd say those three words
I shoulda woulda coulda said it back to you
And this can't be saved if you can't be found
You hung up and left me for dead on the ground
You didn't even say goodbye
I shoulda woulda coulda said it back to you
I shoulda woulda coulda said it back to you
Now that you're gone I'm wasting away
The life has been siphoned right out of my veins
If I could go back in time
I'd say those three words
I shoulda woulda coulda said it back to you
And this can't be saved if you can't be found
You hung up and left me for dead on the ground
You didn't even say goodbye
I shoulda woulda coulda said it back to you
I shoulda woulda coulda said it back to you
When you said those three words
I kinda freaked out
When you said them first my jaw hit the ground
I shoulda woulda coulda said it back to you
And this can't be saved if you can't be found
You hung up and left me for dead on the ground
You didn't even say goodbye
And this can't be saved
And this can't be saved
If you can't be found
If you can't be found
I shoulda woulda coulda said it back to you
I shoulda woulda coulda said it back to you

Couldn't decide between this and the first in comments. Oh and I dyed my hair with pink again, third in comments.
The Castle and Clan Donald Centre near Ardvasar has some beautiful grounds. Armadale Castle is a fascinating ruin. Plus it has beautiful gardens behind it and a HUGE lawn area between it and the Sound of Sleat.
The Clan Donald established itself on Skye in the 15th century, occupying castles at Dunscaith and Knock, both within a few miles of Armadale, and Duntulm Castle at the north end of the island.
From the 1650s, the MacDonald chiefs also began to stay at Armadale. From the 1700s onwards, the mansion house at Armadale was used as a dower house (a large home occupied by the widow of a late owner or chief) and then rented out to others.
A number of famous historical figures have visited Armadale over the years. Flora MacDonald, famed throughout the world for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie to flee Scotland after the Jacobites' defeat at Culloden, was married here on 6 November 1750. Samuel Johnson and James Boswell visited in 1773.
Around 1790, a new mansion house was built at Armadale and this, combined with the start of the plantings you see around the gardens today, became a real demonstration of the wealth and lifestyle of the landed aristocracy.
In 1815, the mansion house was extended to form Armadale Castle, designed by the renowned architect James Gillespie Graham. In 1855, fire destroyed much of the original house, which was replaced by the current central section (designed by David Bryce). In 1925, the MacDonald family moved to a smaller house leaving the castle to the wind and rain.
Today, the Gillespie Graham section is a sculptured ruin and garden with the staircase and facade often used for wedding ceremonies. Housed in what remains of the original mansion, dating from around 1790, the Somerled Rooms offer a unique conference and wedding facility.
In central Florida.
His gravestone reads:

James A. Braddock
BORN
June 13, 1816
DIED
Jan. 25, 1883
He was a good and honest man
As through this life he trod.
His heart was warm as any child
He feared no one but God.

The little graveyard (known as the Mason/Denver, or the Braddock-Mason-Denver Cemetery) in which this grave lies is on the site of the old homestead known as Braddock's Farm. Not far from Braddock's grave is the smaller, but also beautiful, gravestone of Jakey Turner (just previous, in this Photostream). Sad to say, this little family graveyard had been used as a dump for many years; it has taken an enormous effort to restore it.
There is a historical marker nearby that describes "The Battle of Braddock's Farm," an event that took place in 1865. According to the marker, Confederate troops had learned that Union soldiers were conducting raids on homesteads in this vicinity. They surprised a group of around 100 members of the 17th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, who were in the process of departing Braddock's Farm with 10 wagonloads of stolen cotton. The confederate troops, commanded by Capt. Dickson, forcibly stopped the raid, killing 5 of the Union soliders, and capturing the rest of them.
Note: I just found another (probably more accurate) version of the Battle of Braddock's Farm:
"The Union knew that if the supplies for Southern troops could be cut off, they could starve the Confederacy into surrender. In February, Col. Albert H. Wilcoxson, the Commanding Officer of the Union forces at St. Augustine took approximately 75 men on a raid of the interior of the State. He traveled to Braddock's farm, and used it as a headquarters from which he could raid area farms."
"Capt. J.J. Dickison heard of these raids and set out to end them. With approximately 50 men, he caught up with Wilcoxson and the 17th CT Infantry as they were leaving Braddock's farm with ten wagons loaded with Cotton and other confiscated items. Dickison's troops caught the 17th CT off guard, and a quick, but decisive battle ensued. When Wilcoxson realized he was under attack, he drew is pistol and began firing from horseback. When his bullets were exhausted, he drew his sword and charged Capt. Dickison. Dickison drew his pistol and shot Wilcoxson from his horse. This brief, but fiery skirmish resulted in no Confederate casualties, but the Union lost four men. After the fight, Dickison approached Wilcoxson, lying on the ground, and asked why he had charged. Wilcoxson simply said, "Don't blame yourself, you are only doing your duty as a soldier. I alone am to blame". Approximately eight Federals escaped into the swamps and made it back to St. Augustine. All others were taken prisoner."
Found in this website: www.fcphs.com/Battle_of_Braddocks_Farm.htm
Another website with fascinating accounts of this skirmish, both from Confederate and Union survivors, is here: home.att.net/~DogSgt/braddock.html
With thanks to SkeletalMess for texture layers.
Try this on a black background. It much better on black.
And the mummy bear turned to the daddy bear and said: "Has that bloody Tracey Emin been sleeping in our bed again!"
Some months ago I started taking pictures of the impressions left by people's bodies in sofa's, chairs etc and started calling these sofa dunes.
Not long after I started doing this I started experimenting with other impressions left by people; especially those in beds. I called these bed dunes. Over the last few months I have amassed a small collection - most of which I am not very satisfied with.
For want of a better term I started referring to these collectively as body dunes. I'm sure that someone else is already doing this and producing much much better results - so if there is a generic adopted term for these impressions please let me know. I did search for relevant Flickr groups but didn't find any; but I'm probably searching for the wrong thing; even though I did try quite a few varied searches. Please let me know ... else I'll have to start one.
The image above is the state of the my own bed linen - illuminated by the light from a bedside table. Have to do something while I'm sick :-)

La Maison du Chocolat Pastry Tasting Personally Guided by LMDC's Creative Director, Gilles Marchal at the Boulevard de la Madeline store in Paris, France
A spoonful of dense, chocolate heaven. It's a play on creme brulee (texturally, by the thin, perfectly tempered chocolate top and crack it with a spoon) and obviously chocolate mousse, gone upscale. (Inspired his mother's recipe.)
This will debut eventually in NYC in a few months, according to Gilles. It starts in Paris, then to Tokyo and eventually in NYC. I feel fortunate to be able to get a preview of what's to come.

We've been without air conditioning in half the house for the last two weeks (one problem after another!) Then yesterday a transformer blew on our street about 5:00 p.m. and we had no power at all until around midnight - on one of the hottest days of the year!
Such different sounds around the neighborhood without the hum of all those air units, power tools, tvs and boom boxes. For a long while I could hear the lucky folks with pools splashing in them, kids running through sprinklers with shrieks and giggles. We stayed outside, turned our own sprinklers on and moved our chairs so as to catch the most of the breeze cooled through the sprinkler mist and watched Krypto wear himself out chasing, killing and eating water. ;-)
After a bit, the happy sounds around us began to take on a more frazzled sound ... tempers were getting shorter ... more sweaty neighbors stalking around the street looking for signs of a TXU work crew. I started having flashbacks to scenes from the Spike Lee movie Son of Sam and the heat wave power outage in NYC ... ;-)
When the mosquito mob turned nasty we left for our own dinner ... burgers in the coldest joint nearby - and we made them last a long, long time. ;-)

Thaipusam actually celebrates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam. On this occasion, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. It is a time for making and fulfilling vows. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows.
To do this, a devotee would pierce his cheeks, tongue, face or other suitable body parts with sharp objects. Next his friends or relatives load a *kavadi on his shoulder. Finally, in a trance-like manner, he goes on a 4km journey of faith.
Others, including young children, might join the procession carrying only milk pots. The Thaipusam Singapore procession starts at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank Road.
At first look, one might think that the festival starts at one temple and ends at another. Not so. Many of the devotees start fasting a month before the Thaipusam Singapore festivities. Others fast a week. Yet others three days.
A Hindu friend said this to me, "If you are going to put a 12-inch skewer through your cheeks and a hundred spikes in your chest, you'd better take your fast seriously!"
* A kavadi is a cage-like structure carried by devotees during the Thaipusam Festival.
It is traditionally decorated with peacock feathers and aluminium plates which show images of Hindu deities. Sharp spikes criss-cross its lower section.
An elaborate kavadi might weigh up to 15kg! It is quite something just to lift it. But these chaps I saw actually walked with them for 4km - kavadis, skewers, hooks, spikes and all!
Some of them even skipped and danced with their kavadis. Either they have great endurance or they have some supernatural help.

The Father Daughter Dance.....
At last year’s father daughter dance, I knew nothing in advance. A note came home, I checked a box, then laid out my fancy socks.
Excitement mounted over days, as smiles gilded my girl’s gaze. The father daughter dance was nigh, beneath a diamond velvet sky.
We put on our fancy clothes (extra ironing, extra bows), then drove to the Heart Day Ball and slipped into the dining hall.
“Oh, my goodness!” we both gasped. Around my fingers hers were clasped. We both felt a bit demure; diffident, a tad unsure.
The cafeteria was transformed. Ornamented, lit and warmed. A temporary Paris, France, for our father, daughter Dance.
Our eyes were wide, wet with water. A treasure trove for father, daughter. Dancing dining, glide and twirl, holding close my daddy’s girl.
Father, daughter, dance we did. The two of us were lost amid a million lights and gleaming glow. We felt enchanted, apropos.
That night was magic, you can bet. Shining hours we shan’t forget. A time to bond and hold her near. Now it’s here, another year.
Three-hundred and sixty-four since then nights, I’ve remembered all the twinkling lights. Excited for another chance; another father daughter dance.
Much has changed, though much has not. Wind’s whistled through our world a lot. Still sky above and sod beneath, but longer hair and six less teeth.
A brand new pic - compare, contrast - the space between the years is vast. This father daughter dance was dear, but faded fast and now I fear.
Another memory in the pool, a father daughter dance at school. How many more until they’re gone? A sprinkling few, unless I’m wrong.
Moments mount until they’re passed, rarely slow, too often fast. Treasure each before they fade and truly live the life you’ve made.
When I’m old with silver hair and sitting in my favorite chair, I’ll reminisce, review, reflect; remember when and recollect.
She’ll still want her daddy’s ear, and I’ll still want my baby near. We’ll laugh out loud when we’ve the chance, about that father daughter dance.

Ted DeGrazia, one of Tucson's most famous and eccentric artists, made news in 1976 when he burned 100 paintings in protest of inheritance taxes.
However, only after rumors that he had also hidden original artworks in the Superstition Mountains did he become part of local folklore.
I never got to meet the man, but he traveled in many varied circles in Tucson and southern Arizona.
Our paths crossed often, yet never at the same time.
I have been fortunate, though, to befriend someone who has been unsung in traditional DeGrazia history but was a significant witness.
He doesn't like attention, so I'll address him as "Two Guns," as DeGrazia did.
Two Guns was hired by DeGrazia to simply be around, simply because DeGrazia loved having him around.
In return, Two Guns loved DeGrazia fiercely and protected the man and his art.
They traveled together often, especially into the Superstition Mountains on horseback or donkeys to explore, prospect - or maybe even hide some paintings.
Two Guns is a character, a grizzled old prospector who could have just walked out of the pages of a book about the Gold Rush.
He has the stereotypical miner's accent, high-pitched voice, shuffling walk and mannerisms.
Two Guns had a favorite outfit he still wears today - a red sombrero with shiny gold trim and large feather, a poncho and, yes, two guns.
Or rather, it had two guns. They're long gone now but supposedly have been replaced with a trusty machete.
Often people think he's an actor in character, but that's just how he is 100 percent of the time.
Two Guns can't read or write, but he is quite a storyteller with anecdotes so outlandish, you never quite know if he's being entirely factual or if he's leading you on with a tall tale.
Either way, it's a nice ride, and the little old man is still quite the charmer.
There is a book about DeGrazia that mentions Two Guns.
It says he was often the brunt of jokes and sometimes made fun of by others because of his childlike ways.
But DeGrazia never poked fun at him. He always treated him with respect.
Supposedly, when the paintings were hidden, they were left for Two Guns.
But out of love for the artist, Two Guns will never retrieve them.
"Them's mine," he says. He does not want them fought over or taken by people who want only to profit off them. If they really exist, they could be worth millions.
Tall tale? Who knows? But I can see why DeGrazia might do it.
Today Two Guns has a simple life, is often lonely and gets by with meager funds.
He can be seen all over town in his wheelchair, maybe collecting a food box, maybe buying some food for his dogs or someone else while he goes without.
He is often disregarded or made fun of by those who have no idea of the life he has led.
So the next time you are tooling around Tucson and come across a little, unassuming, eccentric, white-haired old man, be nice to him.
Who knows? You might be looking at Two Guns himself.

As I was driving home last night, Lake Okanagan was remarkably calm. There was no wind to speak of. Conditions were perfect to take this shot, so I did, even though I was risking getting locked into the park overnight. Very glad I stopped. Kind of thinking this should have been my day 29 submission instead of the artistic nude. Oh well.

Receiving a few messages from home and feeling rough, home is the only place where Josh wants to be.
It worries me sometimes that the public don't think we're real people with real lives, doing things every other Tom, Dick and Harry does for themselves or their families. Nobody shakes a stick at footballers who earn millions, and even the bankers and government get away with blaming us and other people when really they're the real scumbags, toying with money that isn't theirs. The papers might say otherwise, but it's true what I say: You don't know how the Underground really works unless you've lived it. Annie Mole can tell you all she wants, and yes I wont doubt the fact she knows a lot about the Underground, but there's something she can't seem to capture about (after all, she just blogs about the Underground; she doesn't work for the Underground) – the real essence of the lives of those who work to keep this tinpot railway going – real life on the job as we say. I want to try and capture it, or the stories at least, and perhaps the ones you don't really care about because because you're too busy listening to what the Evening Standard is telling you about us.
We always tell each other to enjoy the days off and the annual leave when we do get it, because we spend our hours at work willing the time away to the ends of our shifts. Before you know it, that time has been and gone Underground. All the old-timers always tell me that if the shift work doesn't get around to killing you, something else will. There are endless stories of people finally managing to retire, but then keeling over days later. Or getting cancer (as we breathe in a lot of crap doing all that time Underground – and half the stuff we come into contact with is carcinogenic, not counting the cigarettes people smoke).
In my second year on the job, I worked a lot with a bloke called Roger, but then he passed away. I'd worked with him on a Sunday afternoon. He kept telling me now and again that this job would be the death of him. He passed away early on the Tuesday morning. It was weird. Everybody turned up at his funeral in full-and-formal uniform. There was even an Underground roundel made from flowers. Lewisham Crematorium was packed out with about 50 members of staff that day.
It's horrible not knowing what day it is because you've been working all night or because you've set the alarm for 02:30 for the dead earlies. Everything's a blur. People come and people go. We see thousands of faces everyday. Some are kind and some are not, but sometimes they're all a blur too. Things change, but some things stay the same. The stories, the traditions, the practises and the heritage. All in a fraction of a second. All forgotten by the next day.
Time might seem slow for you when you're stuck on a train for whatever reason, but for us, it flies by. I was 18 when I started and I remember my first day out on the gateline like it was yesterday, but when I think about the fact I'll be turning 22 towards the end of this year, I find it so hard to make sense of it all.

I can't find much about Josephine, though it seems she compiled a book of her brother's letters from the wars. She also bore and raised 2 daughters and a son with her husband.
I found the information about Dr. Foster in an eBay auction, of all things:
" He was born at Newbliss, County Monaghan, in the north of Ireland, August 31st, 1818. He was the only son of Benjamin Friel Foster, an officer in the English army, and Elizabeth Moorhead. Dr. Foster's family came from England, and settled in Ireland in the year 1641. His father died at the early age of thirty-six, and in 1833 his mother came to Cincinnati to visit her brother, Dr. Moorhead, and brought Nathaniel with her. Mrs. Foster was induced to leave her son, who thus became an inmate of his uncle's household. In 1838 he graduated from the Medical College of Ohio, and shortly afterward went to Europe, and spent some months in the hospitals in Dublin.
Upon Dr. Moorhead's return to his estate in Ireland, much of his business fell into Dr. Foster's hands, and he became one of the busiest practitioners in the city. For nearly forty years he occupied the same office, and clung most tenaciously to it and its associations. Dr. Foster was actively connected for many years with the Good Samaritan Hospital of Cincinnati.
While attending a patient he was stricken with paralysis, and after an illness of three weeks, died July 16th, 1882, at his residence, 66 Lawrence Street, in the sixty-fourth year of his age. In 1853 he married Josephine R., eldest daughter of General Robert T. Lytle, and left three children-a son and two daughters."
During a cholera epidemic in 1852, Dr. Foster's intense devotion to his patients nearly led to his own death. From an Ohio heritage site we learn he was extremely dedicated to his patients, rarely taking a vacation and rendering his service to even the poorest in town with kindness and without pushing for payment. " A prominent physician once remarked: "Dr. Foster was always the gentleman in all the relations of life." ...Those few words expressed the generous estimate of a noble character, the physician and gentleman, ever ready to render to suffering humanity, whatever their station or their means, such aid as his skill and devotion could afford, and always ready to yield his own opinions and his own preferences if only those who had committed themselves to his care could only be the gainers by the experience and knowledge of others. Of an unusually vigorous constitution, he was forgetful of sell', and accomplished an amount of work such as few would have been able to perform. But the untiring labor for many years finally undermined his constitution, and for several years before his death, which occurred July 16, 1882, be was compelled to do less work, though be never retired from practice, preferring, as he said, "to die in the harness." "
My dad moved with his mom and new stepfather to Santa Fe in 1933, when he was nine. Eventually they moved into this house, on Don Gaspar, about a mile south of the Capital. At the time, it was the southernmost house in Santa Fe. According to him, he could see all the way to Albuquerque.
My dad was lucky~
My grandfather didn't believe in owning things, especially real estate. So he never bought this house, and, eventually the Reeds didn't live there, anymore.
The house is still there. The last time I drove by, about four years ago, it was the least fixed-up house in what is probably a multi-million dollar neighborhood. I always wanted to get it back, but not so much, anymore. Still, something in me really loves this house. It's a beautiful house.
Scanned from one of many old tiny but exquisite black and white photos that somebody in my family took. I'm slowly contemplating the idea of rescanning this photo at a higher resolution and digitally editing it very carefully, something I didn't do when I did these the first time.
Today (Monday, November 30, 2009), is the second anniversay of my dad's passing. I decided to honor him a litte bit over the next few months by fixing up and sharing some photos of his extremely interesting life.

A family of Francois' Langurs high up in the trees on the Malayan tapir island in the Lied Jungle, the world's largest indoor rainforest and a "total immersion experience" at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. I love how this rare species sport wild mohawks.
And it is a rare species. According to a wikipedia:
There has been a dramatic decline in the population size by approximately 85% since [1990], making this species that of very high priority to potential extinction. The total number of wild individuals is unknown, but there are believed to be less than 500 left in Vietnam and 1,400-1,650 in China. There are only about 60 langurs in captivity in North American zoos.
And wikipedia further informs us that the baby's name is GinLu and:
she was was born in the Lied Jungle at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo [in September 2009]. After being rejected by her mother, Lied Jungle keepers worked for several weeks to teach the mother to feed and care for her properly. It was important to have a special holding area for mother and infant for safety, ensuring the family was within sight and smell at all times. Mother and infant needed to be strongly bonded before placing the group together. By October 13, 2009, the entire group was reunited into one holding area.
As wikipedia notes, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is "nationally renowned for its leadership in animal conservation and research." And from the zoo's website:
The major purpose of the Lied Jungle is not only recreation, but education and conservation awareness. Rainforests play a vital role in the quality of life on earth. They are disappearing at the alarming rate of 50-100 acres a minute. That's an area the size of Massachusetts each year.

For more than half a century this sign has greeted Montrealers driving over the Champlain Bridge, walking through the Old Port or Little Burgundy, or descending from Mount Royal, but perhaps for not much longer. In July, the sign went dark, its owners having decided to do away with it. As one of Montreal’s most distinctive and beloved landmarks faces extinction, a question is raised: do we care enough—or even know enough—about our sign heritage?
