This cottage was apparently built by Henry Hersey (1795-1866) and his son, also Henry (1827-1893), possibly c. 1860, one of several in the area which were built by them. The Herseys were carpenters and bought sections 815 and 1116 prior to the 1860s, building a row of two-roomed cottages which were let for 3 shillings a week. Two larger, four-roomed cottages remain: this property and a house of the corner of Schulze and Gorge Road on section 1116.

In 1860 the cottage was the scene of a crime:

Adolph C. A. Herse was indicted for stealing 28 bunches of onions, value 2s., the property of his master, Henry Hersey, jun., at the Fifth Creek, on the 14th August last.

The prisoner had been in the employment of the prosecutor, who is a market gardener, at the Fifth Creek, and on the day named visited the sleeping apartment of the prisoner, a stable detached from the prosecutor's residence, and there, under the bed, discovered 28 bunches of onions. The prosecutor then, with a person named Sanders, put themselves in ambush to watch the proceedings of the prisoner, to see what he would do with the onions; but neither of them being able to detect the prisoner go into the stable again or leave it, both of them, after being on the look-out for several hours, returned to the prisoner's bed, but found the onions gone. On being spoken to the next day some words passed between prisoner and prosecutor, and those words the prosecutor construed into an admission of the prisoner that he took the onions.

The prosecutor, to-day, said that when he first saw the prisoner the next morning, he said to him, "How about the onions?" which at first he denied having taken, but afterwards admitted to have have taken them for the purpose of giving to a poor fellow out of work, lately in the employ of the Waterworks Commissioner, and which he had given him to sell for himself. When he first made the admission he said they were damaged, and that he had thrown them in the creek, and then went to the creek and brought some rotten ones which he (prosecutor) told him were not the same he had seen under the bed. In answer to His Honor, the prosecutor confessed he could not distinctly remember the exact replies the prisoner made to him when he questioned him about the onions.

John Sanders gave evidence of the interview between the prosecutor and prisoner. He confirmed the prosecutor's evidence that he only asked the prisoner "how about the onions?" He did not hear him charge the prisoner with stealing them.

The prisoner handed in a written defence, stating that he took the onions to give to a poor man, and that when his master found it out, he said he would forgive him if he would remain and work, which he did for several days after, and then wishing to get paid his wages, he asked for them, which the prosecutor refused to give. He then went to a lawyer to get his wages for him, who sent a letter to his master demanding them, and as soon as he received the letter, he went and laid the information against him. The statement added that the prosecution was only instituted to keep the prisoner out of his wages.

His Honor summed up, directing the Jury that the taking had been proved, and, therefore, the only question for their consideration was, whether the onions were taken with the intention to steal; and upon that question the must important part of the evidence was, that the next morning, when the prosecutor spoke to the prisoner, he did not tell him he had stolen the onions; but only asked "how about them?" shewing that - at that time, even the prosecutor did not think they were stolen. It would have been a very different matter altogether, said His Honor, if the prosecutor had said to the prisoner, "You have stolen my onions;" then any answers made by the prisoner to that charge, amounting to a confession, could be received as an admission of his guilt; but he thought both the conduct of the prisoner and the prosecutor did not amount to a supposition that the prisoner intended to steal. There was no doubt the prisoner took the onions, and it appeared he gave his master's property away to a man out of a work of charity, which he had no right to do, but that fact militated against the supposition that he intended to steal them from his master.

The Jury acquitted the prisoner.

"Disko, disco duck...Dii-iiscooo - disco duck"

So I drove my mountainbike over this flagstone path next to the church, passed by the boy-scouts shack and clubhouse and saw that the path turned.Near the turn the flagstone path ran alongside a small brooke with a couple of ducks sitting besides the brooke.I drove on (or is it I rode on when your driving a mountainbike?) and I saw a green lawn with hellish green, wet grass and little ducklings with a couple of their elders sleeping on the grass. At first, I didn't thought anything of it ( you've gotta know that my camera was strapped around my neck and was dangling around when I drove my bike...) I stopped and looked at the cuddly sleeping ducklings but the moment I had stopped, the little ducklings (and a few of their elders) started quacking, got up their feet (?) and started walking towards me.Maybe they wanted to be fed.Anyways, they where used to people thats for sure ! I grabbed the camera and started clicking away kinda franticly. The result is beautiful. These ducklings came nearly as close as my feet !!

This photo looks amazing on black! Just saying.

This chick here got a job, should I mention that it's my sister. We went to pick her up tonight and I brought my camera so I could capture some carlight bokeh, and ended up taking this while we were out. I like the outcome. I took some completely out of focus and it looks like an alien. I might upload one of them later.

I took a trip to the post office to ship off some eBay stuff. Note, never print your own shipping labels! You'll be cheated 2 extra bones just to ship.

Listening to "Metabolism" by The Strokes. I'm not even going to comment on how much I've been playing this album, don't take note that I just did!!

1950 Leica IIIc

1938 Leitz Summar f/2

Fuji Neopan 400asa C41 B&W film

The great thing about Wales is that all trails lead to a pub.

And because I'm not too good on my feet at the moment,,,I'm tending to see more pub than trail.

Seeing as my daughter knows how to handle a screwmount Leica, I get to be in some of the photographs when she's around too. This shot looks like it's 6x6 format, but that's because it was the last shot on the roll, and for some reason the right hand edge got wrecked, so I had to crop it.

Of course, all the writing in Wales and the Welsh Language (like on the front of this pub) is back to front, relative to English, because we read written Welsh from right to left, like the peoples of The Levant, from whom, as Welsh people, we are all descended.

In the far West of Wales, in Cardyland, they often speak it backwards too, though this practice is slowly dying out as free schooling for children over 8 years old spreads there, thanks to the enlightened policies of our fairly recent and independent Welsh Assembly Government. Also, they wish to avoid the label of Satanism.

Unlike other countries, which either drive on the left or right hand side of the road, in our little but very ancient country, we drive on both, alternating between each side depending on the phase of the moon, and whether the month has a letter 'R' (written backwards) in it or not.

It's all to do with Welsh Druidism and the ancient rights of cattle drovers.

This is a Cast Stone from Gilberto Silva is made of limestone, hand craved, the original is a Gold Disc, is made of a sheet gold that is hammered, and embossed. Here is a warrior with a long bulbous nose emerging from a warrior eagle looks down upon its victim. This raptoral figure and the frontal earth monster below resemble elements on later structure at Chichen-Itza like the temple of the warriors. The victim wears a feathered back dress and even though he has a mustache and a nose bar his reduced forehead and nose structure clearly identify him as Maya. it is significant that the face and eye of the victim were cut through in the destruction of the disc, and the eagle warrior left intact. Perhaps this was used as a charm in a ritual to bring victory to the toltec in their conquest of Chichen-Itza. After being recontructed it was thrown into the sacred well of sacrifice as an offering to the gods to bring victory in the downfall of the maya at Chichen-Itza

The Scene represents the fall of the Maya civilization in the hands of the Toltec culture, originatingat Tula in Central Méjico and coming down through Tabasco. These same people captured the city of Mayapan in Northern Yucatan. They were called Toltec ...meaning "Foreigner"

The Fiat 8V (or "Otto Vu") is a sports car produced by the Italian automaker Fiat from 1952 to 1954. The car was introduced at the 1952 Geneva Motor Show. The name 8V was chosen because they thought that Ford had trademarked the name "V8". They weren't a commercial success, but did well in racing. Apart from the differential the car did not share any parts with the other Fiats (but many parts were made by Siata and they used them for their cars). The 8V was developed by Dante Giacosa and the stylist Fabio Lucio Rapi. The engine was a V8 originally designed for a luxury sedan, but that project was stopped. The Fiat V8 had a 70 degree V configuration of up to a 1996 cc of volume, at 5600 rpm the engine produced 105 hp (78 kW) in standard form giving a top speed of 190 km/h (118 mph). The engine was connected to a four speed gearbox. The car had independent suspension all round and drum brakes on all four wheels.

Top management were preoccupied with more run of the mill projects, however, and only 114 of the high-performance coupés had been produced by the time the cars were withdrawn from production in 1954.[1] Nevertheless, they continued to win the Italian 2-litre GT championship every year until 1959.[1]

34 of the cars had a factory produced bodywork by Carozzeria Speciale FIAT. Some cars had the bodywork done by other Italian coachbuilders. Carozzeria Zagato made 32 that they labelled "Elaborata Zagato". Ghia and Vignale also made bodyworks. Most were coupés, but some spyders were made as well.

FGR : fruit destruction.

and GWTL : diptychs (wk. 46 revisited....happy anniversary!)

i had a lovely nectarine...i sat and i looked at it....trying to figure out what to do to destroy it. and then i got hungry...and i ate it.

so i opted for grape jelly instead.

i never realized how sticky that stuff is. i kept adding more and more until it was all over my face, neck, and chest. it actually just looked worse the more i added, so i ended up going with two of the more minimal shots. the end ones were just gnarly looking. i tried to lick it off and got some really goofy looking shots. and then i tried to take some off and shoot some more, but it wouldn't come off so easily so then i had jelly and bits of toilet paper stuck to my face as well haha. maybe i'll post a reject later :)

so it got EVERYWHERE...i was sticky sticky sticky after this. it wouldn't come off! it was pretty bad. i was hoping that maybe i'd discovered a great new skin treatment haha. i'm just glad it didnt stain my face.

i did feel a new kinship with jelly donuts.

so in other news. i got new light bulbs on saturday and was probably way too excited about it. but they really make a huge difference...especially since i'm just using my normal house lights.

oh and my work sent me to shoot a kids' fashion show on sunday. it was pretty much an explosion of cuteness. a ton of fun.

i'll probably post a link, if not the actual shots once it's up and running.

happy tuesday everyone!!!!!

Gràcia is a district of the city of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It contains the neighborhoods of Vila de Gràcia, Gràcia Nova, Vallcarca, Penitents, El Coll, La Salut and Camp d'en Grassot. Gràcia is bordered by the districts of Eixample to the south, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi to the west and Horta-Guinardó to the east. It's numbered District 5. In 2005, Gràcia had 120,087 inhabitants, according to the Instituto Nacional de Estadística.

Gràcia was established in 1626, by a novitiate of Carmelites who established a convent there called "Nostra Senyora de Gràcia (Our Lady of Grace)." Gràcia was an independent municipality until it was annexed to Barcelona in 1897 along with other villages in the plain of Barcelona. The expansion of the Eixample district in the 19th century eventually led to the northward expansion of Barcelona, connecting Gràcia to the growing metropolis.

The most well-known attraction in Gràcia is the Gaudí-designed Parc Güell which is located on El Carmel mountain.

Gràcia is also home to Teatre Lliure, on of the most prestigious theaters in Spain. There are several notable squares in Gràcia including Plaça del Sol, Plaça de Rius i Taulet and Plaça de la Virreina.

Every August, Gràcia holds an 8-day festival "Festa Major", known as Festes de Gràcia, one of the largest festivals in Barcelona.

A Manila tambol aparador / armoire

Estimate: PHP 1,200,000 - 1,300,000

2nd Quarter, 19th century

Manila

Narra and kamagong wood, bone, kamagong and lanite inlays, silver mounts

196 x 125 x 51.5 cm (77 x 49 x 20 in)

Kamagong wood was very scarce and expensive even over 170 years ago. Artisans would combine it with narra wood not only for those restrictive reasons but also to create an attractive and contrasting color effect. Originally made in Manila, this style subsequently spawned several variations – from Bulacan and Ilocos in the north to Laguna in the south – each with vernacular modifications. However, only the wealthiest who could afford such luxury furniture had them in their homes.

Classical Greek, Roman and Egyptian motifs are clearly evident, aside from the contrasting wood color of the dark kamagong frame and honey-brown narra centers that became de rigueur again in the early 19th century. The top frieze is inlaid on three sides, with scrolling leaves and flowers centering a large honeysuckle flower. The effect of using big-sized and light brown-colored lanite inlays against dark kamagong background is reminiscent of the oyster veneer, a decorative technique popular in England in the 17th century. The half-round pilaster columns, inlaid border inlays on the doors, the large foliated flower on the beaded apron, and the lotiform feet have been masterly executed. Opening the doors with turned kamagong pulls with silver centers and a spade-shaped silver escutcheon reveals four shelves and four drawers with knob pulls. This type of aparador remains scarce and highly desirable.

'Collingwood Terminals' On Black

A few recent shots of the Collingwood Terminals building, a landmark from both the water and land of Collingwood, Ontario. It was a bright sunny day but with the wind chill, it was probably -30C. So cold that you could not work without gloves and I had to keep ducking back into the car to keep from getting frost bite.

This building has been the subject of much debate about its fate. At one point there was talk about putting a restaurant on top of it which would provide a spectacular view of the area, but the costs apparently did not make this feasible. A local paint store agreed to donate the paint if the Town would provide the labour to repaint the exterior. From a distance it appears white, but as can be seen up close, it is quite another matter. Once again, the labour costs proved to be too much and this idea failed.

Never the less, if you have ever driven into Collingwood on HWY #124 or approached it on the lake, there is no mistaking this landmark.

PS:

Story about the Town of Collingwood considering the sale of the Terminals to a group that would put a condo building between it and the water, leaving the south side as is.

Racing for Mercedes-Benz by Hartmut Lehbrink. Published by Veloce Publishing.

From the vast number of drivers who have competed for Mercedes-Benz and its ancestors in the past 115 years, legends such as Hermann Lang, Karl Kling, Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher stand out. However, history should not forget all those other works drivers and privateers whose exploits added to the fame of the company at the wheel of formula, sports racing and touring cars; drivers whose names have often unjustly faded from view. Famous or obscure, the 240 fastest of these drivers are presented in this volume, which has been compiled in close co-operation with Mercedes-Benz Classic.

Better bigger?

I've giving in and posting this for 2 reasons;

[one] There's quite a few hours of homework ahead of me

[two] A story to go along with this

Went snowboarding today. As most ski hills are (midwest or otherwise) they are always tucked back in the middle of nowhere with windy dirt roads leading to a "mountainous" area. Here in Northern Illinois, that's exactly how it is. There is this little road I always take as a short cut and as I was driving down it, the clouds quite literally parted over this field. It's been flurrying with sun for the past couple of days so, yes, those little white dots are snowflakes. I immediately backed up the car and started *snaps snaps*. I figured I actually get out of my car to get a better angle but as I was walking up to the fence as seen above, I tried to hit the shutter and it did nothing. My little info screen read 'f EE'. So I stood in the middle of the road for a minute, somewhat paniced as my shiny new camera appeared to have pulled a Windows Vista (LOL). So I hop back in the car, grab my BlackBerry and get to Googling.

After I had driven off, I found somewhere on a forum that my camera was "frozen" and I needed to take the battery and the SD card out and let it sit for a couple days. HAHA YEAH RIGHT. So I scrolled down some more and came across another post that simply said, "check the aperture ring, sometimes it can get twisted or knocked out of the lock." And tada, that would be the cure :D So all ended well... except for my crappy snowboarding shots. They...well, they just didn't work out so well, so I leave you with this to ponder.

(not a fan, 48 more days to make up for it)

"The Venaria Reale site is a unique environmental and architectural experience of extraordinary interest. It is an immense, varied and imposing space where the visitor cannot help feeling drawn into the magic atmosphere of cultural attractions and amusements that were the pastimes of nobility.

Venaria Reale and the old market town represent a treasure trove of historic events and trials and tribulations. We sense this in the imposing baroque palace, with its vast gardens, one of the most significant examples of the magnificence of architecture and art in the 17th and 18th centuries. We sense it, too, in the La Mandria Park, one of the finest examples of European environmental havens where numerous species of both domestic and wild animals live in complete freedom, and where a significant legacy of historic and architectural wealth is preserved.

The new splendours and exceptional quality of the architecture of the restored ‘Reggia’ palace, the immensity and beauty of the gardens and natural spaces in the park allow visitors the opportunity to spend their time immersed in new sensations, savouring new experiences and enjoying the modern concept - accessible to all - of “taste”, “leisure time” and the “art of living”.

The ‘Reggia di Venaria Reale’ royal palace and the residence of La Mandria have been declared “World Heritage” sites by UNESCO."

Love happened at last,

And we entered God's paradise,

Sliding

Under the skin of the water

Like fish.

We saw the precious pearls of the sea

And were amazed.

Love happened at last

Without intimidation...with symmetry of wish.

So I gave...and you gave

And we were fair.

It happened with marvelous ease

Like writing with jasmine water,

Like a spring flowing from the ground.

My favourite "Zar " :) Nizar Qabbani (21 March 1923 – 30 April 1998) was a Syrian diplomat, poet and publisher.

At the age of 15, his sister (25) committed suicide because she could not marry the man she loved. During her funeral he decided to fight the social conditions he saw as causing her death. When asked whether he was a revolutionary, the poet answered: "Love in the Arab world is like a slave and I want to free it. I want to free the Arab soul and body of my poems. Relationships between men and women in our world are not right."

In 1973 he married Balqis al-rawi, an Iraqi teacher whom he had met at a poetry recital in Baghdad. She was killed in a bomb attack by pro-Iranian guerrillas in Beirut in 1981 while working for the Iraqi embassy's cultural section.

He is perhaps the most revered contemporary poet in the Arab world.

The Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka recently got some new animals - cotton-top Tamarins.

Up to the 1980s, the Cottontop Tamarin was thought to occur from Costa Rica south to northern Colombia. By 1992 it could be found only in northern Colombia. Significant exports for biomedical research contributed to the Cottontop Tamarin's decline in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Currently, deforestation is the greatest threat. - WIkipedia

RAF Binbrook was opened in 1940 as a Bomber Command station and later became home to some of those mighty fine Javelins and Lightings in the 1960s. The last planes left the base in the late 1980s.It was clear that once these rooms would have been very impressive. Today, there was little left. RAF Binbrook was the location of a fairly interesting mystery in 1970. If you are a UFO buff, then this is fairly interesting. If you are not, then I wouldn't bother.

It's time to get personal again. Long story, read if you feel like it.

I met my first boyfriend when I was 16; second semester of my first year in high school.

It was a weird story from beginning to end.

We met at a party in March, in a big old house out in the countryside. Some rich Scientologist hippy siblings lived there while their parents were on a long holiday in the US; I think they grew up in America. They always made me feel inferior because they were so pretty (a girl and two boys, all equally dreamy) and today their kids have weird names like Almond and they grow ecological wine and draw futuristic houses warmed up by solar cells. Anyhow. They were very nice and I wish them all the best, so it's not that.

Ok, so at this party were some students from "People's college", which is like alternative colleges in the countryside with alternative programs like "the Ireland program" or "the Venezuela program", I don't know, lots of Art schools and writing classes too. I later went to a writer's class like that for two years. There were some Art students there, one guy was really cute but he was quite a bit older than I (at least it was quite a bit when you're 16) because he said that Jimi Hendrix' and Janis Joplin's spirits "fought over his body to be reincarnated in" when he was born. I thought that was a 50 % cool and 50 % totally embarrassing thing to say. Come on, at 16, you're still half impressed by crap like that.

My best friend had a long glass bead necklace that broke on the dance floor so all the beads spread over the entire room and no one could dance before they were gone, so there was some pointless drunken drama about that for a while, and my friend was SO sad, like only a drunk 16 year old girl can be. I eavesdropped on a conversation between two girls with Henna-dyed hair while they were smoking, and one of them said "last night I had sex six times with my boyfriend" and the other said "nooo way!" and the other girl said "and I had an orgasm every time!" and smoked in a, eh, bohemian fashion, I suppose.

Someone put on a The Doors record and everyone went on the dance floor (now cleared from glass beads) and this guy that I hadn't even noticed tried to slow dance with me, so I jokingly went along with it, and then he whispered "come on baby light my fire" in my ear (yes, the chorus of the song) and I was like, ew, pushy AND cheesy! and walked away.

For some reason this turned into a big drama where he was made out to be this seducer of the young and innocent, because he was 19 and a freshman at college. I really didn't make it into a big thing, I was just not interested. He walked away with some friend and went "she hates me now!" and my girlfriends who knew him said he was really a good guy, blah blah blah. Then the party ended and we went home in the car with some guy who was lying in the trunk and quoted Hamlet (which I recognized, and I thought that was DREAMY): Goodnight, sweet ladies, goodnight goodnight. He fell in love with one of my best friends soon after, who was also at this party, they were a couple for 11 years or so.

So, two months passed, and the seduction on the dance floor continued to be a Big Issue. I can honestly say that a couple of my friends, and his friends, nagged me into becoming his girlfriend. "you would look sooo good together!", "he's the sweetest guy on the planet!" etc etc. So at last I was like ALL RIGHT THEN, and we met at some campfire party in the forest in May and kissed and then we were going out.

Seriously, it was BORING to be a couple. It was like we never had ANYTHING to do other than make out, and it's not that much fun after a while. He studied Philosophy and I read all his Philosophy books much faster than he did, in English, and wanted to discuss what I've read, but he just wanted to snuggle. All the girls in my class were sooo impressed that I went out with a college guy, and he was in a semi-successful band too. I admit that the social part of it was a lot more fun than the romance. It was cool to hang out with a bunch of older guys, 19-23. They went on tour and I felt like a real rockstar wife.

But at the same time I was SO above waiting outside while he rehearsed, or to "admire" his record collection (I knew a lot more about music than he thought I did. He was smug because he thought he was the one who introduced me to Sonic Youth, but he wasn't.)

I also had a pair of really awesome box-shaped speakers from the 60s that he kept nagging me to sell to him, and I was like, why the hell for? "You don't need them like I do!" And why is that? "You're not into music like I am!" Eh? It all boiled down to that I didn't need awesome 60s speakers because I was a GIRL.

Let's just take a moment here. Breathe.

Ok.

So we had been going out for a month, a month that was roughly pointless except for the obvious fact that he was My First Boyfriend. At one point he said he loved me, and I almost blurted out "Oh COME ON!" but I didn't. Then it all became this big "You never say you love me!" thing from his side, and then I went to France for a month. I had an awesome time and hung out with French punkrockers and English surfers on the beach in Biarritz, and did a million things my parents wouldn't approve of, and probably not my BF either. I actually almost got kicked out of my French class. Hm. But it was great! I walked barefoot to Jim Morrison's tomb in Paris! From Gare du Nord, I mean, not from Biarritz. I think like 20 men offered me drugs on the way, and at least one offered me his dick. Good times!

Anyway.

I called my BF maybe twice during that month, he said he and his friends were making tie-dye shirts to sell at festivals, and I said great. He talked about his band and I said great. Then I got home and didn't call him for two weeks to tell him I was home again. I was in the countryside reading Anaïs Nin and some other writers I had picked up, e.e cummings perhaps, and I was writing my first attempts at "real" poetry. So I was trés busy. I also got a part time job at a flea market, which I raided for all its black lace dresses and blouses, and a couple of old Adam Ant tapes. I biked for miles daily, lost a lot of weight and looked great, except I shaved off an eyebrow to test if he'd like me without it - and I sort of hoped he wouldn't. It didn't grow out for ages.

When I finally got back, he dumped me at a party. I don't know if it was the eyebrow or that I was never around, but I was relieved in which case. I remember clearly what I wore that night - a short orange skirt with many ruffles, a turquoise top, brown 70s wedges and a pair of huge 70s sun glasses. I had just dyed my hair with Henna so it smelled horrible, but it was very red, like I wanted. He got sick on a carpet, but I didn't clean it up, some other GIRL did, of course. :P

We never kept in touch after that, for the better I'd say. The weird thing is, he lives on my street now, but I rarely see him. It's a long street, but it's still kind of weird.

One Tree Hill Season 1-7 DVD Boxset

Set in the fictional small town of Tree Hill, NC, this teen-driven drama tells the story of two half brothers, who share a last name and nothing else. Brooding, blue-collar Lucas is a talented street-side basketball player, but his skills are appreciated only by his friends at the river court. Popular, affluent Nathan basks in the hero-worship of the town, as the star of his high school team. And both boys are the son of former college ball player, Dan Scott, whose long ago choice to abandon Lucas and his mother Karen, will haunt him long into his life with wife Deb, and their son Nathan. Until now, Dan has managed to keep his two sons far from each other. But the past and present collide sharply when Tree Hill's basketball coach recruits Lucas for his team, much to the chagrin of Nathan and Daddy Dan. And the siblings natural rivalry only intensifies when they set their sights on the same girl, Peyton Sawyer. The residue of the past lingers far into the future for the residents of Tree Hill, even as a new generation is rising. Tree Hill follows the lives and loves of these two brothers, their friends and their family as they navigate high school, marriage, and finally... adulthood.

Me explico.

View On Black

I pass this spot every day on my way to Boyle. For me it's one of those spots I use as a backdrop to assess and measure light and note the passing of the seasons. It's situated at the bottom of the Curlews which are just visible at the top of the frame. It was unusual to see the cattle in this field, it was under a foot of water a few weeks earlier, I just had to stop to record them. The light was very poor, nothing new about that this Summer, so I struggled a bit with camera settings. Obviously, I wanted the foreground subject to be sharp but I felt the background, on the top thirds line, also deserved to be relatively sharp. I figured a small aperture of f/11 would be appropriate but this would not give me a shutter speed fast enough to hold the 200mm lens steady while I balanced myself in the middle of the ditch! I had to open the aperture to f/7 and be satisfied with a speed of 1/100. I also had to bring the ISO up to 320. The cattle were very cooperative and stayed fairly still, a tripod would have given me the shot I wanted but I had to settle for this.

In the end, the background is softer that I'd hoped for but I felt the pleasing composition of the foreground group compensated for that.

View On White -- So I didn't made it last time hanging around much longer in Flickr. I hope I'll do better now. I kinda miss it but on the other hand I'm glad I have time for other "important" things in life.

South Texas is in a 20 month drought and the few thunderstorms are welcome but simply not enough.

These islands in Lake Travis are a sure sign for this drought. This was taken mid June and when I drove by last week I think it was even worse.

I made a seven bracket shot here with the intention for some HDR image but couldn't get a satisfying result. The different pieces of software were all overwhelmed by the data (especially the gradient around the sun) and manual blending overwhelmed yours truly. So I ended up selecting the most promising image and did some "regular" Photoshop wizardry.
