Ecocentro Danaus (<-- video) is located a couple miles east of La Fortuna Costa Rica. It's a fairly small reserve, 600 meters of walking trails, but boy, do they pack a LOT in such a small area. Danaus was created about 13 years ago when some forward thinking people decided it might be better to grow life than cut it down. Danaus is like a mini oasis since it's completely surrounded by pasture and cattle land. Here's what Ecocentro Danaus says about itself: 'Ecocentro Danaus is an ecological reserve that preserves a natural regenerating secondary forest. Many different biological processes take place here and there is a great biodiversity of flora and fauna in its natural state.'Danaus is worth a look if your in the La Fortuna area and you need something to do for a couple hours.

Stirling
Beautiful village in the Adelaide Hills
Located only 18 km from Adelaide via the South Eastern Freeway, Stirling is a village and district of extraordinary charm. In many ways it captures the essence of the Adelaide Hills. Being quite unlike the typical Australian town it is middle class in temper, European in vegetation, and Mediterranean in its ambience.
The township came into existence as a very conscious act of real estate selling. In 1854 Peter Prankerd, a close friend of the South Australian politician, Edward Stirling, laid out the town (he named it after his friend) and on 27 February, 1854 the firm of Samson, Wicksteed & Co auctioned the lots with the advertisement that the area 'approximated to the spring temperature of our native land'.
At the time Stirling had natural advantages as the area around it was ideal for market gardening and orchards and the route running through the village was the main road through the Adelaide Hills.
Today Stirling is by-passed by the South Eastern Freeway. Consequently it has been left as a delightful, elegant small village in the hills
My dad moved with his mom and new stepfather to Santa Fe in 1933, when he was nine. Eventually they moved into this house, on Don Gaspar, about a mile south of the Capital. At the time, it was the southernmost house in Santa Fe. According to him, he could see all the way to Albuquerque.
My dad was lucky~
My grandfather didn't believe in owning things, especially real estate. So he never bought this house, and, eventually the Reeds didn't live there, anymore.
The house is still there. The last time I drove by, about four years ago, it was the least fixed-up house in what is probably a multi-million dollar neighborhood. I always wanted to get it back, but not so much, anymore. Still, something in me really loves this house. It's a beautiful house.
Scanned from one of many old tiny but exquisite black and white photos that somebody in my family took. I'm slowly contemplating the idea of rescanning this photo at a higher resolution and digitally editing it very carefully, something I didn't do when I did these the first time.
Today (Monday, November 30, 2009), is the second anniversay of my dad's passing. I decided to honor him a litte bit over the next few months by fixing up and sharing some photos of his extremely interesting life.

A family of Francois' Langurs high up in the trees on the Malayan tapir island in the Lied Jungle, the world's largest indoor rainforest and a "total immersion experience" at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. I love how this rare species sport wild mohawks.
And it is a rare species. According to a wikipedia:
There has been a dramatic decline in the population size by approximately 85% since [1990], making this species that of very high priority to potential extinction. The total number of wild individuals is unknown, but there are believed to be less than 500 left in Vietnam and 1,400-1,650 in China. There are only about 60 langurs in captivity in North American zoos.
And wikipedia further informs us that the baby's name is GinLu and:
she was was born in the Lied Jungle at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo [in September 2009]. After being rejected by her mother, Lied Jungle keepers worked for several weeks to teach the mother to feed and care for her properly. It was important to have a special holding area for mother and infant for safety, ensuring the family was within sight and smell at all times. Mother and infant needed to be strongly bonded before placing the group together. By October 13, 2009, the entire group was reunited into one holding area.
As wikipedia notes, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is "nationally renowned for its leadership in animal conservation and research." And from the zoo's website:
The major purpose of the Lied Jungle is not only recreation, but education and conservation awareness. Rainforests play a vital role in the quality of life on earth. They are disappearing at the alarming rate of 50-100 acres a minute. That's an area the size of Massachusetts each year.

Pada hari Sabtu, 07 Agustus 2010, Sekolah Tinggi Perikanan melantik 327 wisudawan dari enam program studi, yakni Teknologi Penangkapan Ikan, Permesinan Perikanan, Teknologi Pengolahan Hasil Perikanan, Akuakultur, Teknologi Pengelolaan Sumberdaya Perairan, dan Penyuluhan Perikanan.
Ketua STP, Dr. Aef Permadi, S.Pi, M.Si menyebutkan bahwa hingga sekarang STP telah menghasilkan 7749 lulusan yang bekerja di dalam maupun luar negeri. Di antara Sarjana Sains Terapan Perikanan yang diwisuda rencananya akan direkrut oleh perusahaan-perusahaan perikanan, seperti PT Ocean Mitramas dan PT Marindo. Saat ini STP membuka enam program studi yaitu Teknologi Penangkapan Ikan (TPI), Permesinan Perikanan (MP), Teknologi Pengolahan Hasil Perikanan (TPH), Teknologi Akuakultur (TAK), Teknologi Pengelolaan Sumberdaya Perairan (TPS), dan Penyuluhan Perikanan (PP) bagi para taruna yang berasal dari lulusan Sekolah Lanjutan Tingkat Atas baik umum maupun kejuruan, termasuk yang telah menjadi Pegawai Negeri Sipil. Biaya selama pendidikan, seperti asrama, konsumsi, perkuliahan, dan praktikum, sebagian besar ditanggung oleh Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan.

Le 20 Octobre, une "journée nationale de la solidarité avec les étrangers" a été organisée pour protester contre le projet de loi Hortefeux sur l'immigration et sa disposition controversée sur les tests ADN. A l'appel de 3 associations (RESF, le collectif Uni(e)s contre une immigration jetable - UCIJ- et les Collectifs des sans-papiers d'Ile-de-France - CSP), des manifestations ont rassemblées dans une quarantaine de villes françaises des milliers de participants, dont 4000 à Paris (1500 selon la police) entre Belleville et Palais Royal.
Ici, place de la République, les différentes personnalités en tête de la manifestation, incluant Arlette Laguiller, porte-parole de Lutte Ouvrière, Jean-Pierre Dubois, président de la Ligue des droits de l'Homme (LDH), ou encore Jean-Claude Amara, porte-parole de l'association Droits devant.

parou de ir na minha casa parou de falar comigo e com a
minha mãe certo dia ela falou para minha viznha da frente
que colocaria veneno na porta da casa dela só para minha
cachorrinha morrer e no mesmo dia ela colocou veneno
e no outro dia a Belinha foi no portão o portão estava
aberto e ela saio para fora foi la e lambeu o veneno de rato

In August 2014 the Hamilton County Commissioners voted to put on the ballot for this November a one-quarter of one percent sales tax increase that by law is limited to five years to fund the restoration of Cincinnati Union Terminal.
The tax would generate nearly $172 million in revenue-- and when it is combined with historic tax credits, contributions from the State of Ohio, and philanthropic fundraising efforts it will allow for the complete repair and restoration of Union Terminal.
Hamilton County residents will not be the only ones paying for this. The Economics Center at the University of Cincinnati analyzed and determined that approximately 47% of the sales tax collected in Hamilton County comes from people who live outside the county, thus relieving the tax burden on local residents.
Additionally, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the sales tax increase would cost the average resident just $23 per year. The Hamilton County Commissioners also put in the proposal that by law this increase would end after just five years.
The successful passage of Issue 8 will allow us to preserve Union Terminal and guarantee that it will continue to be an essential part of our region's great heritage. Future generations will benefit from our investment now-- ensuring that our children, and grandchildren, are able to enjoy Union Terminal.
Decades of time, outdated construction techniques and years of freezing and thawing have taken its toll on Union Terminal. But, repairs can be made to the exterior envelope of Union Terminal to prevent water damage and to the steel structures underneath, making the building fit for a very long time into our future. Additional repairs and renovations to outdated mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems will make Union Terminal more efficient and create more opportunities for activities within the building.
There are many ways to become involved with the campaign. First and foremost is to make sure you are registered to vote by October 6 and vote 'Yes' on Election Day, November 4th.

"Cambriaman" is the name I've given to my friend and fellow Flickr Photographer Roland Portillo (RolandBP@Flickr) Roland is a local resident who lives in the small funky and artsy coastal town of Cambria, California. (pronounced CAM-bria rhyming with Camera) He served as my host, chauffeur, and tour guide during my two day photo safari to the beautiful coast of San Luis Obispo County California which is midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Cambria is located on scenic California Highway 1 about sixty miles south of beautiful Big Sur and 100 miles south on Monterey, California. Roland's broad brimmed sun hat evokes an Indiana Jones like character for me, so I gave him a superhero name. In this shot and the following one I caught a profile of Roland unsuspecting camera in hand leaning over the railing of the boardwalk observation point of the Elephant Seal Rookery just as the sun was setting.

Porto - Portugal - Europe
The busy daily life at he borders of the Douro.
De Luis I-brug (Portugees: Ponte Dom LuÃs I) over de rivier Douro is een opvallende boogbrug in de Portugese stad Porto.
De brug is vernoemd naar koning Lodewijk I van Portugal (Dom LouÃs I, 1861 - 1889), die de brug in 1886 opende.

The LuÃs I Bridge (Ponte LuÃs I) is a metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest of its type in the world.
The Government held a competition for the construction of a metallic bridge over the Douro River on a site that was adjacent to an existing bridge and would replace it. Teófilo Seyrig had already engineered the D. Maria Pia Bridge project nearby, whilst working as a partner of Eiffel. He now took sole responsibility for the new, major LuÃs 1st Bridge. The construction was begun in 1881 and the bridge opened on 31 October 1886.

The arch measures 172 m in length and 44.6 m in height
