Well, I finally made it back to Richmond Park yesterday, it's only taken me FIVE YEARS!!! Not been there since 2009!!! and I nearly didn't go yesterday either, because of initial bad weather and engineering works on the railway...it was a Sunday I guess, that's power for the course!!!
Anyhoo, I was rewarded with my FIRST ever Fallow deer Rut, which was pretty intense for 5 minutes!!

Description ~ The male fallow deer is known as a buck, the female is a doe, and the young a fawn. Adult bucks are 140–160 cm (55–63 in) long with a 85–95 cm (33–37 in) shoulder height, and typically 60–100 kg (130–220 lb) in weight; does are 130–150 cm (51–59 in) long with a 75–85 cm (30–33 in) shoulder height, and 30–50 kg (66–110 lb) in weight. The largest bucks may measure 190 cm (75 in) long and weigh 150 kg (330 lb). Fawns are born in spring at about 30 cm (12 in) and weigh around 4.5 kg (9.9 lb). The life span is around 12–16 years.
The species has great variations in the colour of their coats, with four main variants, "common", "menil", melanistic and leucistic – a genuine colour variety, not albinistic. The white is the lightest coloured, almost white; common and menil are darker, and melanistic is very dark, sometimes even black (easily confused with the sika deer).
Common: Chestnut coat with white mottles that are most pronounced in summer with a much darker, unspotted coat in the winter. Light-coloured area around the tail, edged with black. Tail is light with a black stripe.
Menil: Spots more distinct than common in summer and no black around the rump patch or on the tail. In winter, spots still clear on a darker brown coat.
Melanistic (black): All year black shading to greyish-brown. No light-coloured tail patch or spots.
Leucistic (white, but not albino): Fawns cream-coloured, adults become pure white, especially in winter. Dark eyes and nose, no spots.
Most herds consist of the common coat variation, yet it is not rare to see animals of the menil coat variation. The Melanistic variation is rarer and white very much rarer still.
Only bucks have antlers, which are broad and shovel-shaped (palmate) from three years. In the first two years the antler is a single spike. They are gazing animals; their preferred habitat is mixed woodland and open grassland. During the rut bucks will spread out and females move between them, at this time of year fallow deer are relatively ungrouped compared to the rest of the year when they try to stay together in groups of up to 150.
Agile and fast in case of danger, fallow deer can run up to a maximum speed of 30 mph (48 km/h) over short distances (being naturally less muscular than other cervids such as roe deer, they are not as fast). Fallow deer can also make jumps up to 1.75 metres high and up to 5 metres in length.

De repente dos ancianas comenzaron a cantar, y otras más se les unieron , pudiendo gozar de un increible espectáculo improvisado. El pueblo Dong es así.....
Walking through Xiaohuang, i was whatched with curiosity by the villagers, i was rare for them as they were for me. Sudenly two women started singing a traditional song, and other grandmothers joined them to give us a great spectacle of there culture. Dong people is like that....

Vivid Sydney - Macquarie Visions
The Vivid Festival ran from May 27 to June 21.
Highlights inclided a light display on Macquarie Street and the return of the fire waters performance at Darling Harbour, a song summit in Sydney and a creative industries X Media Lab.
Last year's festival attracted more than 200,000 people to events at the Rocks and Circular Quay.
Macquarie Visions, a free public event celebrating in immersive light displays, the 200th anniversary and story of two visionary leaders, Governor Lachlan Macquarie and his wife Elizabeth.
Taking approximately one hour, the walk starts with a dazzling light spectacle at St Mary’s Cathedral and moves onto installations at Hyde Park Barracks Museum, The Mint, Parliament House, The State Library of New South Wales, The Royal Botanic Garden’s Palace Garden Gate and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with special features including the spectacular Downer Macquarie Arch and the stunning illumination of the Opera House sails fulfilling the amazing Vivid Light experience.
The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was conceived and largely built by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who, in 2003, received the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honour.
The Sydney Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007. It is one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings and one of the most famous performing arts centres in the world.
The Sydney Opera House is situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It sits at the northeastern tip of the Sydney central business district (the CBD), surrounded on three sides by the harbour (Sydney Cove and Farm Cove) and neighboured by the Royal Botanic Gardens.
The Opera House was formally completed in 1973, having cost $102 million.

According to Wikipedia, the Red-footed Booby is a large seabird of the booby family. As suggested by the name, adults always have red feet, but the color of the plumage varies. They are powerful and agile fliers, but are clumsy in takeoffs and landings. They are found widely in the tropics, and breed colonially in coastal regions, especially islands. It is the smallest of all boobies at about 28 inches (70 cm) in length and with a wingspan of up over 3 feet (1m). In addition to its red feet, it also has red legs, and its bill and throat pouch are colored pink and blue. This species has several morphs: White, Black-tailed, Brown, White-tailed and White-headed. The morphs commonly breed together, but in most regions one or two morphs predominates; e.g. at the Galápagos Islands, most belong to the brown morph, though the white morph also occurs. The sexes are similar, and juveniles are brownish with darker wings and pale pinkish legs, while chicks are covered in dense white down.

Guess who fed the Indian Pond Heron a "Center shock" chewing gum? :-)
For those who don't know what "Center Shock" is, it's a chewing gum available in India. This particular gum has a gel at the core, that is extremely sour. One of the ads of this gum shows that the person who is given this gum gets all the hair on his head to stand up - It became very popular in a short while. :-)
This particular field was filled with Herons and egrets. I was busy shooting another herons, when I heard two making a racket - Noticed that two were fighting, when I turned my camera to this guy, the fight was over, but there was just about enough time to get the feathers standing. :-)

View Large On Black Some people equate the terms bad and evil but there is a difference in the way these two terms are commonly used. As they are most commonly used, evil is the subset of all that is bad delineated from what is merely bad by a conscious intent to do harm. Something is bad if it causes harm but is only evil if some conscious being intended the harm. Evil carries a moral punch. The evil is in the intention. There are therefore bad things or events that are not definitively evil, at least as these two terms are commonly used. If a mudslide destroys a village and people die in their sleep, what has happened is very bad but not evil for it is merely an act of nature, but if somebody had a chance to warn them but didn’t because they wanted them to die, then their failure to warn them would be evil. The evil is in the intent to do harm or allow harm to be done.
The above photo is highly manipulated but is “based on reality”. The reality rests in the two photos that I took within thirty hours of each other. On the first day, I was driving around the beltline on the east side of my home town when I saw this vehicle with the sign, “CAUTION, DO NOT TAILGATE, SHOW GOAT SEMEN ON BOARD.” I quickly grabbed my camera and captured the image you see above, well, most of that image. There was another image that formed in my mind, an image based on but differing from the reality of the photograph that I had just taken. I wanted to make a point. The next day, I spotted a car that was rather ordinary, but it displayed what I wanted to complete the image that had formed in my mind, an Obama bumper sticker. I quickly photographed the back of that car.
After I downloaded the two images from my camera onto my computer, I changed the name of the company printed on the truck to “Superboy Semen”, the license plate number to 666-OWW and removed the owner’s phone number and other identifying information. Then I added the Obama’ 08 sign to the back. The Obama’08 sign was on the back a parked car to my right and the photo was taken from a different angle than the back of the goat semen truck which was to my left. I first changed the perspective (angle) of the Obama’08 bumper sticker to match what it would have been on the back of the truck and then resized it. Then I transferred it to the truck, erased the sticker part of it and changed the color and blur of the lettering to somewhat match the “CAUTION, DO NOT TAILGATE . . . ” sign immediately above it. Finally, after a few more minor changes, I photoshopped seven layers of the altered image and merged them into a final composite which you see above.
The result is a photo I can truthfully say is “based on the truth” because the truck really existed as did the Obama’08 sticker. Now it was not my intention to pick on Obama, I actually admire the guy, but to make this point. I don’t like underhanded, manipulated news reporting on any issue. How can I vote my conscious if I‘m being mislead? How can I know what or who to support if I am being fed partial lies? My purpose in posting this photo is to show graphically what members of JournoList did verbally and graphically on a regular basis to manipulate the news to support their candidates and causes. The big difference is that I am telling you what I did openly and out front. What they did, they did it in secret, never intending to tell their readers and listeners. Did they do evil? Did they intend to harm anybody? Well they harmed the voters right to know the whole truth and they conspired to harm opponents with spurious news stories that they released separately, but in unison. I’ve always admired (not) the ability of the liberal media to be outraged in lockstep. Now we have proof how they do it. One thing we can be sure, what these JournoList members did was a bad way to report the news. This is not a minor problem.
Accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard in February 1950, the museum's HO3S-1G was initially assigned to Coast Guard Air Station (CGAS) Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The following month the aircraft transferred to CGAS Salem, Massachusetts, where on 4 September 1951, it was involved in a heroic rescue. Receiving word that a U.S. Air Force pilot had parachuted from his aircraft over the Atlantic Ocean off Massachusetts, Lieutenant Clarence Easter and his crewman proceeded to the scene. When attempts to use the rescue sling did not meet with success, Easter maneuvered the helicopter, which was equipped with flotation gear, for a landing. He then dove into the water and pulled the now unconscious pilot to safety. In 1954, the aircraft shifted to CGAS Traverse City, Michigan, and the following year arrived at CGAS New Orleans, Louisiana. While assigned to this station station, its was one of two HO3S helicopters on the station that formed the Coast Guard's first all-helicopter Search and Rescue unit. In addition to the mission of saving lives, unique flights made by the museum's HO3S-1G included scouting the swamps near New Orleans hunting for bank robbers and other fugitives hiding from police. Its last assignment was at CGAS Traverse City, Michigan.

GREENPEACE IN 18 CITTA’: BOLLETTE NUCLEARI, COSTI STELLARI
Milano, 17 ottobre 2009 – I volontari del gruppo locale di Milano di Greenpeace hanno distribuito oggi, davanti agli uffici postali di via Dante le nuove bollette che l’Enel ci presenterà nel 2020, nel caso si riuscisse a riportare il nucleare in Italia così come sostengono la stessa azienda elettrica e il governo.
“Enel e governo devono smetterla di prendere in giro il Paese sostenendo che il nucleare servirà ad abbassare le bollette degli italiani – spiega Roberto di Lernia, coordinatore del gruppo locale Milano di Greenpeace. - In realtà le bollette schizzeranno alle stelle, proprio come quelle che stiamo distribuendo oggi”.
Il costo del nucleare non dipende solo dal combustibile e dalla gestione degli impianti ma, per chi deve partire da zero come l’Italia, è dovuto principalmente al costo di realizzazione degli impianti. In Finlandia i nuovi reattori EPR, quelli che l’Enel vorrebbe realizzare in Italia, ha ormai superato i 5,5 miliardi di euro. Il peso finanziario di un investimento iniziale così oneroso sarà recuperato attraverso l’energia elettrica venduta. Il prezzo del kilowattora nucleare, ai costi reali e non a quelli propagandati da Enel, sarà più che doppio rispetto a quanto viene oggi scambiato alla borsa elettrica.
“Il nucleare è economico solo se qualcuno ti regala la centrale e se lo Stato si fa carico di gestire le scorie radioattive per secoli, altrimenti è una pura follia economica” afferma Francesco Tedesco, responsabile della Campagna Energia e Clima di Greenpeace. Oltre ai costi per la realizzazione degli impianti bisogna anche tener conto degli accantonamenti per lo smantellamento dei reattori, della copertura assicurativa in caso di incidenti gravi, dei costi per il riprocessamento delle scorie, per la bonifica dei siti contaminati e per la realizzazione del futuro deposito geologico di stoccaggio.
“Con il rilancio del nucleare si permette alle aziende di fare profitti, scaricando i rischi e i costi sulle spalle dei contribuenti e delle generazioni future. E poi puntare sul nucleare ci farà inoltre mancare gli obiettivi europei al 2020 per lo sviluppo delle rinnovabili, con ulteriori sanzioni per la collettività” aggiunge Tedesco.
Entro il 2020 le fonti rinnovabili insieme a misure di efficienza energetica sono in grado di produrre quasi 150 miliardi di kilowattora, circa tre volte l’obiettivo del governo sul nucleare, creando almeno 200 mila nuovi posti di lavoro “verdi”. La strada verso l’indipendenza energetica dell’Italia passa obbligatoriamente attraverso lo sviluppo delle rinnovabili, senza costi aggiuntivi per il Paese, senza scorie pericolose da gestire per i prossimi 100 mila anni e senza rischi per la popolazione.
Attività simili sono in corso oggi anche in altre 17 città italiane: Pescara, Bergamo, Firenze, Roma, Torino, Varese, Castelli romani, Genova, Bari, Salerno, Padova, Trieste, Taranto, Urbino, Catania, Napoli, Bologna.

4. i'm probably going to be all alone when i'm older, as in no husband. It's not that I don't like people, I just get bored of them so easily.
5. I want to travel. Everywhere. I want to be able to tell my grand children that I've been to all 50 states, and every continent. It just seems like such a cool thing.
6. I listen to music constantly. I don't think there's a minute without my ipod by my side, and in my ear.
7. I take my camera everywhere. Even if I don't take pictures, I still feel right when it's right next to me.
8. I don't fit in anywhere. I have friends within a lot of different groups, and I have yet to find my place. Not that I need one.
9. I just recently became vegetarian. and I want to keep going with it. It's been three days, and it's pretty hard considering all my diet was, was chicken. everyday, all day.
10. Up until this year, I always knew what I wanted to do with my life. Now, I don't have a clue, and it freaks me out.

A small town in the province of Lleida which sits at the foot of the Sierra del Tallat mountains, in the valley of Maldanell. Its origins date back to a Cistercian monastery which came to be the most important female monastery of the Catalonian-Aragonese Crown.
The monastery was founded in the 12th century and when the Trento Council decided that female monasteries must not be left abandoned, the inhabitants of the area built a village around it. At present, the monastery of Vallbona de les Monjes houses a significant female community. Its architectural wealth lies in the wide variety of styles on display on its walls and exterior, the best of examples of which are the church door, the cloister and the chapter house. Vallbona de les Monges forms part of the so-called Cistercian triangle, along with the monasteries of Poblet (Conca de Barberà) and Santes Creus (Alt Camp).

The Perry House which is still being renovated and restored is the largest home at Heritage Square. It was built in 1876 for a prominent lumber baron and business tycoon, William Hayes Perry. At one time it was the largest home in Los Angeles. Perry founded the Los Angeles Gas Company which installed gas lights in downtown L.A. and later went on to found the Los Angeles Water Company.
The house was designed by E. F. Kysor in the Greek Revival/Italianate style and features bay windows , four marble fireplace mantles, sweeping staircases and hardwood floors.
In 1888 the home waws purchased by Judge Stephen C. Hubble, the first City Treasurer of Los Angeles and a founder of the University of Southen California. It was moved in 1975 and donated to the Museum in 1995.

Almost 2000 years ago, four writers recorded the life and teaching of Jesus. The first four books in the New Testament bear their names: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Matthew was one of Jesus' twelve disciples. He offers a first-hand account of what Jesus said and did over a three-year period.
Luke was a physician who became a follower of Jesus after Jesus' life on earth. He spent time with many who were close to Jesus during His earthly ministry. Jesus' mother Mary gave Luke a mother's insight into the birth and early life of Jesus.
John wrote the last of the four histories. Of the twelve disciples, no one was closer to Jesus than John. He was the disciple who stood alone at the foot of the cross. Jesus demonstrated His great trust in John by committing to John the care of His mother Mary. At the time he wrote the last of the four histories, John was the only disciple of the original twelve who was still living.
Mark's record is the earliest of the four accounts. A young boy during the latter part of Jesus' life, Mark grew up to travel with Peter, one of Jesus' first followers and closest friends. Peter was a fisherman who followed Christ personally and traveled with Him for more than three years. We know from early church historians that Mark wrote what he learned from Peter as he preached about Jesus to all who would listen. Irenaeus wrote in A.D. 175, "Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, also transmitted to us in writing the things preached by Peter."
Of the four histories, Mark's Gospel is the simplest, shortest and most direct presentation of Jesus' life, written in the common language of the marketplace. None of the other Gospels devotes as great a portion of its content to Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection. Mark does not mention Christ's genealogy or birth. Instead, he begins his Gospel by describing John the Baptist's preaching and baptism, followed by the baptism and temptation of Jesus. Then he leads into Jesus' public ministry in Galilee, giving special attention to His miraculous works that prove Him to be the Son of God.
As in all Peter's sermons about Jesus recorded in the Book of Acts, the presentation about Christ in the Gospel of Mark answers two simple but critical questions. It is divided almost perfectly in two equal halves, the first presenting who Jesus is and the second presenting why He gave His life.
From the earliest part of chapter 1 through the end of chapter 8, Mark records Jesus' miraculous works and repeatedly draws attention to the significance of who Jesus is. That is why in the first half of Mark's gospel the word "who" occurs so often.
In the first chapter, Mark clearly declares that Jesus is the Son of God1 Even demons gave this testimony: "I know who you are — the Holy One of God!" But, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak, "because they knew who he was."2
In chapter 2, the scribes said, "Who can forgive sins but God alone?"3 In chapter 4, after Jesus miraculously calmed the storm, the disciples said to one another, "Who then is this that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"4
The climax of Mark's presentation of who Jesus is in the first half of the book comes at the close of chapter 8: "And Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, 'Who do people say that I am?' And they told Him, saying, 'John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.' And He continued by questioning them, 'But who do you say that I am?' Peter answered and said to Him, 'You are the Christ.'"5
The second half of Mark's 16 chapters describe the final week of Jesus' life on earth — His suffering, death and resurrection. In a series of statements Jesus reveals the purpose for which He was sent into the world: "He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again."6 "He said to His disciples, 'The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.'"7 ''We are going up to Jerusalem,' he said, 'and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.'"8
Also contained in Mark are three dramatic "confessions." In the first verse, Mark himself confesses Jesus as the Son of God. 9 This is followed by Peter's confession in the middle of the book, "You are the Christ,"10 and builds to the Roman centurion's confession, "Surely this man was the Son of God!"11
As you read through Mark's record of the life and teachings of Jesus, you will discover that His life touches the very center of your life.

The lion (Panthera leo) is a member of the family Felidae and one of four big cats in the genus Panthera. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India, and the Bering land bridge and, in the Americas, from the Yukon to Peru.
Lions live for approximately 10–14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live over 20 years. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will resort to scavenging if the opportunity arises. While lions, in general, do not selectively hunt humans, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey.
The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50% over the past two decades in its African range;[1] populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not well-understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species sought after and exhibited in zoos the world over since the late eighteenth century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies.
Visually, the male is highly distinctive and is easily recognized by its mane. The head of the male lion is one of the most widely recognized animal symbols in human culture. It has been depicted extensively in literature, in sculptures, in paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. From ancient times the lotus has been a divine symbol in Asian traditions representing the virtues of sexual purity and non-attachment.
Hindus revere it with the divinities Vishnu and Lakshmi often portrayed on a pink lotus in iconography. In the representation of Vishnu as Padmanabha (Lotus navel), a lotus issues from his navel with Brahma on it. Goddess Sarasvati is portrayed on a white-colored lotus.
Often used as an example of divine beauty, Vishnu is often described as the 'Lotus-Eyed One'. Its unfolding petals suggest the expansion of the soul. The growth of its pure beauty from the mud of its origin holds a benign spiritual promise. In Hindu iconography, other deities, like Ganga and Ganesha are often depicted with lotus flowers as their seats.
The lotus plant is cited extensively within Puranic and Vedic literature, for example:
One who performs his duty without attachment, surrendering the results unto the Supreme Lord, is unaffected by sinful action, as the lotus is untouched by water.

In Chinese culture Confucian scholar Zhou Dunyi wrote - "I love the lotus because while growing from mud, it is unstained".
Most deities of Asian religions are depicted as seated on a lotus flower. In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus represents purity of the body, speech, and mind as if floating above the muddy waters of attachment and desire. According to legend, Gautama Buddha was born with the ability to walk, and lotus flowers bloomed everywhere he stepped.
In the classical written and oral literature of many Asian cultures the lotus is present in figurative form, representing elegance, beauty, perfection, purity and grace, being often used in poems and songs as an allegory for ideal feminine attributes. In Sanskrit the word lotus has many synonyms. Since the lotus thrives in water - 'ja' (denoting birth) is added to synonyms of water to derive some synonyms for the lotus, like ambuja (ambu= water + ja=born of), neerja (neera=water + ja= born of), pankaj, pankaja, kamal, kamala, kunala, aravind, arvind, nalin,nalini and saroja and names derived from the lotus, like padmavati (possessing lotuses) or padmini (full of lotuses). These names and derived versions are often used to name girls, and to a lesser extent boys, in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, as well as in many other countries influenced by Indic culture, like Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Laos.

Ecocentro Danaus (<-- video) is located a couple miles east of La Fortuna Costa Rica. It's a fairly small reserve, 600 meters of walking trails, but boy, do they pack a LOT in such a small area. Danaus was created about 13 years ago when some forward thinking people decided it might be better to grow life than cut it down. Danaus is like a mini oasis since it's completely surrounded by pasture and cattle land. Here's what Ecocentro Danaus says about itself: 'Ecocentro Danaus is an ecological reserve that preserves a natural regenerating secondary forest. Many different biological processes take place here and there is a great biodiversity of flora and fauna in its natural state.'Danaus is worth a look if your in the La Fortuna area and you need something to do for a couple hours.

“Jimmy Jackson was from Indianapolis, originally, and appeared as a riding mechanic in the '500' as early as 1934. Else, he mainly raced Midgets in the East before the war: Madison Square Garden Bowl, Freeport and Castle Hill in New York, Hershey, National Speedway/Philly Gardens, Dorney Park and Langhorne in Pennsylvania, probably other tracks as well. I have only one prewar Big Car event for him, Altoona/PA on Labor Day in '38, where he qualified 19th in a field of 22 (including many top stars, like Mays, Horn, Rose, Nalon, Snyder, Willman, Robson, Hinnershitz, Connor, Brisko, Davis etc.), and was 3rd in the consy with only the first two transfering to the main.
After the war, he apparently only raced at Indy and a couple of times at the Pikes Peak hill climb, having moved to Southern California in the meantime (Desert Hot Springs, east of San Bernardino). He did exceedingly well at Indy, though, finishing in the money (top ten) 1946 through '49. Having been a riding mechanic for the Mike Boyle team before the war, he managed to rent the 1938 Boyle/Offenhauser front-drive for the first two races, a car that had finished in the top six three times already, lengthening its run to a record five consecutive finishes in the top 6. Strangely, the car never again qualified in four more tries.
In 1948, he was the first driver for the new Howard Keck team from California, and their beautiful new front-drive Offenhauser. He spun out late in the race, but was still classified tenth, and came back the next year to finish 6th. Mauri Rose took over that ride in 1950 after his split with Lou Moore's successful Blue Crown operation, qualifying on the front row and finishing 3rd in the abbreviated race, just behind Bill Holland in the leading Moore entry. He tried again the next year, but despite qualifying faster than ever before, the world had moved on and he was way down the field. Pit stops of the leaders put him briefly into third position, but then he crashed out after 300 miles when a wheel collapsed. Although neither car nor driver were seriously hurt, it was the end of their respective careers.
This (not the #7 car pictured above - but the new, 1948 Keck Car) was a very nice car, and a good effort for a rookie team, but putting Rose into the cockpit added four to five miles per hour to its speed, so one is left with the impression that it was a missed opportunity. As it was, it bridged the time between serious success for the driver (two wins and a near-miss in 1947/'48/'49) and the team (a near-miss and two wins in 1952/'53/'54).

If Michael won't mind, I can add a few tidbits to his great overview of Jimmy Jackson. Jackson was riding mechanic for Al Miller in 1934, '36 and '37, so when he qualified for the 1946 '500' he joined a fairly select group of fellows who both rode and drove in the race. He had moved the "lower desert" by the time he drove in the 1946 race. Usually he was listed for Desert Hot Springs, near Palm Springs (east of Riverside, Michael ) Sometimes though, and typically, he was listed for either Palm Springs or even Whitewater (a very small place!). Before his last run at Indianapolis, he was a flagman for AAA events held in the Western U.S. and later a USAC starter. He was involved in community activities in Desert Hot Springs and did grading, tractor and skiploader work. He returned to Indianapolis in the early 1960s as a rep for the Thermoid Corporation Division of the H.K. Porter Company.
As far as why he faded away, Norman J pretty much has it. Jackson was born in 1910, so even with the emphasis on older, more experienced drivers, he was 37 at the time of the photo. According to historian John Glenn Printz, the Keck team wanted a driver who was more of a "charger" than steady like Jackson and that is the reason he gives for them replacing Jackson.
He also drove the Cummins Diesel to several then records for diesel powered cars at Bonneville in September of 1950.”

A bit of a cheat here - Garage Studios hosted a "Studio Lighting" taster evening on Thursday.
Those of us who came were spoiled with 3 setups, 2 models (I'll be posting those later) and the advice and direction of Kevin, Adam, Tash & Matt (who I don't have a link for, 'cause he's a hermit)
One of the setups was a simple ring flash against a (suitably Brighton) pink backdrop. and while most people would zoom in and fill the frame with the model I thought it might look a little different by doing it this way. Sort of "Looney Tunes"-ish

A number of nature posts lately, so I'll mix it up with a jump back to Disney and this b&w of The Hollywood Tower Hotel (aka The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror). This is certainly one of the more 'exciting' attractions.

Location: The ranch is located along the Canadian River in the western Texas Panhandle.
Acres: 71,059 Acres, more or less
Terrain: Approximately 29 miles of the Canadian River runs through the middle of this scenic ranch. The topography varies from rolling uplands to elevated mesa points descending to wide river bottom country. This is truly a beautiful ranching property.

Recently, two state record mule deer have been harvested, and numerous other trophy quality mule deer were taken from this ranch, but not entered in the Texas Big Game Awards Contest. The ranch also offers quality whitetail deer, antelope, turkey, quail and waterfowl.
In recent years, elk, lion, and bear have also been sighted on the ranch. Without question, this game is following the Canadian River Corridor, which is a major travel route for wildlife.
Price: $475.00 per acre
Remarks: The seller will convey all of his mineral and water right interest. This is one of the most productive, scenic, large blocks of real estate to come on the market in recent years. We all love to collect things, but how many of us collect things that weigh from less than an ounce to things over 30 tons at the same time?! Joe Davis, of Harriman, Tennessee, does and he has been collecting anything remotely "railroad" since he was five years old. Everything from old tickets, rails, train wheels, switching equipment, lanterns, crossing signs, depots and deport equipment, to full size authentic railroad cars!
Over the past 64 years you would expect Joe to have quite a few things, but to have is yard, his basement (electric models), and three or four outbuildings full would be the lest one would expect from a life long collector. However, even the two cabooses and boxcar sitting on the tracks in his front yard are packed full of railroad memorabilia! Joe wouldn't hazard a guess as to the value of his "heavy weight" collection, but at minimum it's cost him some fourteen hernia operations!
