Norway is a peace-loving country. We find it very difficult to grasp the concept of terror and hate.
Norway is also a small country. Even though bigger countries might argue that relatively few people wee killed in the terror attack, for us it is many. (For us, twice as many were killed than in the 9/11-attack.) If we don't know someone who was killed, we probably know someone who does. These days are perhaps the most difficult ones, because the police are releasing the names of the killed. The media are showing pictures of them all, smiling, not knowing that they soon will be killed. A few words accompany each picture, saying where they were killed, and who they were, what they were doing. The full meaning of the attack is shown. The promising young politicians, the parents who has left three children.
It is easy to hate the attacker. We choose not to. We answer, not with fear, but with coming together in huge masses. Every age, every ethnicity, every religion, every political belief.
Every day, I pass this landmark in Bergen. The most popular meeting point, the one place everyone knows where is. It has been turned in to a meeting point for everyone. Every day more flowers, cards, and candles are laid here. Every day, it is surrounded by people showing respect. It is eerily quiet, where it's usually busy and full of music and laughter. Young and old stand together, crying. People who have never met, and will probably never meet again, hug and comfort each other.
The attacker has failed. Utterly failed. He wanted us to hate the multi cultural society, we choose to love each other more, show everyone compassion, show every "new fellow Norwegian" that they are welcome, and that we cherish what they can give us and teach us.
As a young survivor of the Utøya-attack said to the media right after she was safe: "If one man can show so much hate, imagine how much love we all can show together".

The excavations of Pompeii is the only archaeological site in the world, along with that of Herculaneum, capable of returning visitors to a Roman town, whose life has remained firm to a distant morning in 79 AD, an era from which the Vesuvius decided to cancel by earth orbit. The town owes its exceptional state of preservation to the way in which it was buried. Source: www.pompeiturismo.it

The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Researchers believe that the town was founded in the seventh or sixth century BC and was captured by the Romans in 80 BC. By the time of its destruction, 160 years later, its population was probably approximately 20,000, with a complex water system, an amphitheatre, gymnasium and a port. Source: en.wikipedia.org

Tragedy at Six Bells
By David John Withers, Brynmawr
My father worked in the colliery all his life and I sort of followed him into the pit. I went to work in Six Bells Colliery at 17 years of age.
When I first went on the 0.18 coal face as a collier's helper I was introduced to my 'batty' Reggie Poe who showed me the tools we were using and two chalk marks 15 yards apart on the coal face. This was our working place, 15 yards long by 4-foot-6 deep by 5 feet high. I thought 'bloody hell' - it seemed a huge amount of coal to shift.
Although the other coal faces in our district were more modern with hydraulic roof supports, we were still using the older friction posts and linked bars. I've still got the scars where one of the bars came down on me!
We had quite a few problems with gas on the 0.18 coal face and the dust was killing. At times the conveyor would start up and you couldn't see each other until the dust settled down.
As boys we often refused to go onto the face because of the amounts of dust there - being youngsters we stuck together even when the officials threatened to send us home. It wasn't much of a threat as I was only earning about £6 odd!
I had been working about two years when the explosion happened. I was working on the 0.18 face at Six Bells on the 'turning shift' and arrived at the colliery on the bus to see the place in turmoil and heard that an explosion had happened. As the explosion had occurred at our place of work, we offered to go down and help as we knew the place, but the Rescue Brigade had it under control and wouldn't let us go down.
It's hard to say my feelings about it all. We knew there was gas there and they said a spark had set it off. I had mostly enjoyed the colliery up to then. I remember four of the men who died - I used to give them snuff with powdered bark mixed in as a joke - there was a good spirit amongst the men at the pit.
Once the explosion had happened it put me off. I finished and I put my notice in soon after. I was too young to lose my life in the colliery. If I had been working the day shift that week it would have been me. The explosion opened my eyes to the dangers and I went into the construction industry instead - I was always good with my hands. The pit made me grow up.
The deaths of 45 men killed 50 years ago in a colliery explosion have been remembered with a service at the site.
A gas explosion ripped through the Six Bells colliery near Abertillery, Blaenau Gwent at 10.45am on 28 June 1960.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, led a service of remembrance at the site.
He also unveiled a memorial to the tragedy, a 20m high sculpture of a miner by Sebastian Boyesen.

Hi Style is a trendy men's wear brand John Players. They have a good range of clothes like semi-formal shirts, casual tees, capris, trousers and even some formal wear.
So, obviously, I took a different approach to editing this photo. I'll tell ya why: (because I'm sure you are all dying to know) I've spent too much time staring at the two previous photos contemplating what it was that I was unhappy with. Something about the portraits I just did not like. Not the pose or the face I was making or whatever, but, you know that something you just can't put your finger on. Then it occurred to me, "Hey, you know, I bet I would really like these photos if they were on someone else's stream." After realizing that, I understood that it just didn't feel like my work, or style or whatever you wanna call it. And I have to say, that I prefer the editing on this photo in comparison.
I'm trying to get to a point in my work where I can compose an image in my head and be able to translate that physically without having to over process the photo. I want to see it in my LCD screen and think, "Ha! That's what I was going for!" And not think, "Well, I can just edit it later." Right? Yeah.
So anyways. What's going on your lives?

I pass this spot every day on my way to Boyle. For me it's one of those spots I use as a backdrop to assess and measure light and note the passing of the seasons. It's situated at the bottom of the Curlews which are just visible at the top of the frame. It was unusual to see the cattle in this field, it was under a foot of water a few weeks earlier, I just had to stop to record them. The light was very poor, nothing new about that this Summer, so I struggled a bit with camera settings. Obviously, I wanted the foreground subject to be sharp but I felt the background, on the top thirds line, also deserved to be relatively sharp. I figured a small aperture of f/11 would be appropriate but this would not give me a shutter speed fast enough to hold the 200mm lens steady while I balanced myself in the middle of the ditch! I had to open the aperture to f/7 and be satisfied with a speed of 1/100. I also had to bring the ISO up to 320. The cattle were very cooperative and stayed fairly still, a tripod would have given me the shot I wanted but I had to settle for this.
In the end, the background is softer that I'd hoped for but I felt the pleasing composition of the foreground group compensated for that.

Thaipusam actually celebrates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam. On this occasion, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. It is a time for making and fulfilling vows. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows.
To do this, a devotee would pierce his cheeks, tongue, face or other suitable body parts with sharp objects. Next his friends or relatives load a *kavadi on his shoulder. Finally, in a trance-like manner, he goes on a 4km journey of faith.
Others, including young children, might join the procession carrying only milk pots. The Thaipusam Singapore procession starts at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank Road.
At first look, one might think that the festival starts at one temple and ends at another. Not so. Many of the devotees start fasting a month before the Thaipusam Singapore festivities. Others fast a week. Yet others three days.
A Hindu friend said this to me, "If you are going to put a 12-inch skewer through your cheeks and a hundred spikes in your chest, you'd better take your fast seriously!"
* A kavadi is a cage-like structure carried by devotees during the Thaipusam Festival.
It is traditionally decorated with peacock feathers and aluminium plates which show images of Hindu deities. Sharp spikes criss-cross its lower section.
An elaborate kavadi might weigh up to 15kg! It is quite something just to lift it. But these chaps I saw actually walked with them for 4km - kavadis, skewers, hooks, spikes and all!
Some of them even skipped and danced with their kavadis. Either they have great endurance or they have some supernatural help.

Abandoned Tennessee State Prison - Nashville, TN. Best viewed enlarged.
I have waited for nearly half a year to get this shot! Today, the clouds parted and it rained candy and smiles upon my life!
The old Tennessee State Prison in the Bordeaux section of Nashville is abandoned and has been since 1992. It has been in a state of increasing decay ever since. Of course, the place is a dream for that hearty brand of folk known as "urban explorers" or those interested in abandoned buildings. A group of Nashville photographers did get to tour part of the facility but they had to endure two years of red beaurocratic tape to get that opportunity. ONe of the lucky few to get inside was a flickr user by the username of Crashmattb and he does have a set available. I like this photo he took.
www.flickr.com/photos/crashmattb/2503461049/
This old Gothic styled building was designed by architect Samual McClung Patton and the building opened in 1898. I recently found the grave of Patton on a visit to Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga.

It really never mattered to me whether or not I ever saw the inside of this place. I just wanted a photograph from the outside. That's all, just one teeny weenie little photo taken from the outside. Well, there is an entrance with a guard station and my first trip there I did not see anyone in the guard station so I drove on through the gate. Well, security was on me like a pig on a corn cob and the guy had a really nasty disposition. I was immediately escorted off the grounds.
My second trip I thought perhaps I could get a shot at the gate but when I returned there was not a good shot to be had because the building was obscured by trees. I knew I would have to wait until Winter and hope those trees were deciduous.
My photo trip for the day was to a Church building in downtown Nashville - er, set coming soon. I left the church and said, "The time has come for me to venture back to the old State Prison." I arrived at the gate and there were no guards at the guard station! It was my big chance and standing at the gate I used my zoom lens to get this shot. I can now die in peace.
The old prison has been used in several big screen movies such as The Green Mile and The Last Castle. The trailer for The Last Castle has a couple of pretty good shots of the prison.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=atQbmaEALSg
Pillar's "Bring Me Down" video was filmed there although it doesn't show much of the prison.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZiiW2tLxEU
VH1's Celebrity Paranormal Project (Episode - The Warden) was also filmed there.
One brave Flickr user named Exothermic breeched security to take photos and also made a little video. The prison is a complex of buildings (what you see in my photo is the Administration building) and I think he broke into a building in the rear of the complex.
He didn't seem to find the old electric chair (nicknamed "Sparky" no doubt) which is still in there.
This is not the ideal photograph but it is one I will take and cherish. Incidentally, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation occupies a building next to the Administration building so just because there is no one at the gate does not mean there is no one present.

The Father Daughter Dance.....
At last year’s father daughter dance, I knew nothing in advance. A note came home, I checked a box, then laid out my fancy socks.
Excitement mounted over days, as smiles gilded my girl’s gaze. The father daughter dance was nigh, beneath a diamond velvet sky.
We put on our fancy clothes (extra ironing, extra bows), then drove to the Heart Day Ball and slipped into the dining hall.
“Oh, my goodness!” we both gasped. Around my fingers hers were clasped. We both felt a bit demure; diffident, a tad unsure.
The cafeteria was transformed. Ornamented, lit and warmed. A temporary Paris, France, for our father, daughter Dance.
Our eyes were wide, wet with water. A treasure trove for father, daughter. Dancing dining, glide and twirl, holding close my daddy’s girl.
Father, daughter, dance we did. The two of us were lost amid a million lights and gleaming glow. We felt enchanted, apropos.
That night was magic, you can bet. Shining hours we shan’t forget. A time to bond and hold her near. Now it’s here, another year.
Three-hundred and sixty-four since then nights, I’ve remembered all the twinkling lights. Excited for another chance; another father daughter dance.
Much has changed, though much has not. Wind’s whistled through our world a lot. Still sky above and sod beneath, but longer hair and six less teeth.
A brand new pic - compare, contrast - the space between the years is vast. This father daughter dance was dear, but faded fast and now I fear.
Another memory in the pool, a father daughter dance at school. How many more until they’re gone? A sprinkling few, unless I’m wrong.
Moments mount until they’re passed, rarely slow, too often fast. Treasure each before they fade and truly live the life you’ve made.
When I’m old with silver hair and sitting in my favorite chair, I’ll reminisce, review, reflect; remember when and recollect.
She’ll still want her daddy’s ear, and I’ll still want my baby near. We’ll laugh out loud when we’ve the chance, about that father daughter dance.

I love my Daughter Amethyst... and every day is a blessing that I get to see, hear and love her. My time with her is priceless. If only she would stay young forever....
Meet Danny.
While out shooting in North Beach for My Surrounding Neighborhoods project, I came across a very kind man playing the harmonica (didn't catch his name) asking for change at the corner of Columbus and Green. As I walked by, we made eye contact and he stopped playing in order to chat with me. "Hey man, can you help me out at all?" I replied to him describing my Dollar Portrait Project and he asked if I could give him $5. I explained to him that the project was specifically for $1. When I thought he agreed, knowing I didn't have a dollar on me, I told him I'd be right back. I went into a nearby restaurant, broke a larger bill for change, and headed back to the corner.
Upon arrival, the man told me he didn't want his picture taken, but he knew someone who wouldn't mind. He called over Danny who was actually waiting outside of the restaurant I was just in. He came running over and the other guy explained to him, "This man will give you a dollar for a picture for his project." Danny was nothing but smiles and agreed immediately. Unfortunately, lighting wasn't good, so the picture above is a bit grainy (taken at 1600 ISO) and slightly blurred (taken at 1/10 of a second), but I did the best I could, placing Danny next to a large advertisement providing some light so I could take the picture without my on-camera flash.
After I took Danny's picture and gave him the promised dollar, I asked him how long he'd be in San Francisco. "16 long years, can you believe it?" I told him I couldn't and asked where he was prior to. He told me he came over from Alabama. I continued pressing asking him if he came straight across or if he stopped anywhere between. Danny responded simply, "That's a long story," so I asked him to give me the short version. He quickly explained that he took crate trains across the country until he made it to San Francisco. When I asked if he had a place to go to in the evening, he said, "I stay here and there. Sometimes I stay at this nice place that is $12 per night, but that's why I'm doing what I'm doing...I also get a dose of Methadone, since I'm not shooting anymore, and that cost me $10 per day. I'm doing what I can, you know?" I responded, "Good for you! Glad to hear you are taking care of yourself." He told me he was waiting for a guy to come out of the restaurant because he was going to give him some food, so he wanted to head back over to the door. I let him go and wished him well, shaking his hand as I walked away.
As I passed the original corner (we had been slowly walking toward the restaurant the entire time), the original guy said, "that seemed to go well." I agreed and thanked him. He responded, "You have a great night now," and I wished him well back.

One of the most dramatic and powerful Passion images in Christian art is the Calvary Scene. The characters—the Crucified Christ, the detachable Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross, Saint John the Beloved on the right, and the Sorrowful Mother on the left—on their own plinth bases, are usually arranged in this conventional and almost linear formation. Each is masterfully carved in the distinct Laguna diagnostics: large and well-proportioned figures made from medium hardwood, usually fruitwood; classic treatment but with provincial, organic demeanor; and the use of vegetable dyes in strong colors of vermillion, blue, green, yellow, and rose on the figures, as well as on the bases. The carved bones on the cross provide a symbolic allusion to Mount Calvary as the burial place of Adam and Eve. The outstanding craftsmanship of the whole assemblage, its size, and proportions strongly suggest a church or a visita origin.

Ecocentro Danaus (<-- video) is located a couple miles east of La Fortuna Costa Rica. It's a fairly small reserve, 600 meters of walking trails, but boy, do they pack a LOT in such a small area. Danaus was created about 13 years ago when some forward thinking people decided it might be better to grow life than cut it down. Danaus is like a mini oasis since it's completely surrounded by pasture and cattle land. Here's what Ecocentro Danaus says about itself: 'Ecocentro Danaus is an ecological reserve that preserves a natural regenerating secondary forest. Many different biological processes take place here and there is a great biodiversity of flora and fauna in its natural state.'Danaus is worth a look if your in the La Fortuna area and you need something to do for a couple hours.
