Suggested by the book Flying Saucers from Outer Space by retired U.S. Marine Corps Major Donald F. Keyhoe, this story, about an alien invasion of Earth, is highlighted by spectacular special effects by Ray Harryhausen.

Hugh Marlowe as Dr. Russell A. Marvin

Joan Taylor as Carol Marvin

Donald Curtis as Major Huglin, the liaison officer

Morris Ankrum as Brig. Gen. John Hanley

John Zaremba as Prof. Kanter

Thomas Browne Henry as Vice-Admiral Enright

Grandon Rhodes as General Edmunds

Larry J. Blake as a motorcycle policeman

Charles Evans as Dr. Alberts

Paul Frees as Alien (voice)

Harry Lauter as Cutting - Generator Technician

Charles was always cutting out stories from newspapers and in the mid-fifties there were a spat of flying saucer sightings. Charles thought this phenomenon would make a good feature and so Earth Vs the Flying Saucers was the result.

The design of the saucers was based on what most people would expect but Ray added an animated section into the top and underside that also had flutes in them so that people could see it was moving.

The various sizes of saucers (there are seven in total) were made from aluminium by Ray’s father and then anodised giving them a matt finish so they didn’t reflect light.

Ray never liked the latex alien suits used in the film even though he designed them. He would have preferred to animate models of the aliens but because of budget restrictions this was never possible.

Instead of drawing entire storyboards for the action, Ray used location photographs and executed rough sketches on them and then mounted them for storyboards.

As with The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, a great number of the rear project plates were stills.

For all the aerial model work Ray used old recording wire on which to suspend the saucers.

The miniatures sets – The Capitol and the Supreme Court buildings cost $1500 each and the Washington Monument cost just $500. Compare those costs with today’s budgets

Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (EvFS) is the flagship of 50s sci-fi B movies. It has all the hallmarks of a typical B movie: shot in black and white, much stock footage, low-budget props, etc. That said, EvFS is still the best of its breed. The acting is good (for the most part). Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion animation of the saucers is great. His saucers have more "life" than any model on a string could attain. The basic premise of hostile aliens invading the earth with flying saucers was a classic. EvFS would be a significant influence in Tim Burton's 1996 movie Mars Attacks.

Dr. Marvin (Hugh Marlowe) heads a nascent satellite program, but all of his satellites blow up or fall from orbit. A saucer buzzes Dr. Marvin and his wife as they drive to the base. Despite a call from Dr. Marvin's father-in-law (Morris Ankrum), they launch the next rocket. A saucer descends on the base. Troops open fire. The saucer is invulnerable, but one of the robot-like aliens is hit. The other alien-bots use heat beams to destroy the base. Only Dr. Marvin and his wife escape because they were in a deep bunker. The aliens came from a defunct solar system, intent on taking over the earth. They want earthlings to surrender peacefully so their new home won't be a ruin from the battle. Mankind is defiant. The aliens give earth 56 days to think it over. The time is used, instead, to develop an anti-saucer weapon. Dr. Marvin and staff develop a magnetic disruptor which makes the saucers unstable. When the fleet of saucers finally arrive over Washington DC, a whole fleet of disrupter-beam equipped Ford flatbed trucks is there to greet them. A mighty battle rages. Saucer heat beams destroy much, but the trucks take their toll too. Saucers wobble and fall into a variety of DC landmarks, including the Washington Monument. Finally, the last saucer falls. Earth is saved! The end.

It's hard not to enjoy this classic of 50s B sci-fi. It has everything a 50 sci-fi fan loves. The acting is reasonably good, the pacing is pretty good too, so even someone who isn't a fan of the genre could be suitably entertained.

EvFS is a classic allegory of Cold War tensions. A hostile force seeks to invade and take over. In the mid-50s, the threat from communism was never far from viewers' minds. The caustic Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev would say, later in 1956 "We will bury you!" would say later. When, in the movie, the earthlings decide to fight the saucers, an Army general says: "When an armed and threatening power lands uninvited in our capitol, we don't meet him with tea and cookies!" Such was American popular sentiment towards the threat of communism.

Stock Footage Fun -- amid the usual clips of P-80s and V-2s (Checkers!) and other military clips, are stock disaster clips. Storms, fires, destruction. For the sci-fi fan, there are also snippets recycled from earlier sci-fi movies. There are battle scenes cut from War of the Worlds ('53) and The Day the Earth Stood Still ('51).

Cheap Suit -- The aliens walk about in crude robot-like suits with faceless bullet-shaped helmets. The fit and finish of these suits is quite poor when you get a good look at them.

Alien Glimpse -- The brief scene in which the real alien (head) is exposed, reveals the taxonomy that would become archetypal: big head, tapering to a small neck, large almond-shaped eyes, tiny mouth. They're also said to weigh little, being fairly weak and frail. Of the many sorts of invading aliens seen thus far in the 50s, some were simple -- men in leotards Killers from Space, if not just plain people Devil Girl from Mars and Flight to Mars and giant humanoids: The Thing. A very few hostile (or at least frightening) invaders were not humanoid: Invaders from Mars and War of the Worlds. The alien in EvFS appears to be an early showing of what would later become the presumed "true" shape of alien life forms.

Bottom line? EvFS is well worth watching. Fans of 50s sci-fi will enjoy it. Family members of fans of 50s sci-fi can tolerate it. In many ways, it is the epitome of the B grade 50s science fiction movie.

From www.collingsfoundation.org:

The B-17G (Serial # 44-83575) has been returned to its wartime configuration under the auspices of the nonprofit Collings Foundation of Stow, MA and given the name "Nine-O-Nine".

The Collings Flying Fortress was built at Long Beach, CA by the Douglas Aircraft Company and accepted on April 7, 1945. Although she was too late for combat, #44-83575 did serve as part of the Air/Sea 1st Rescue Squadron and later in the Military Air Transport Service.

In April 1952, #44-83575 was instrumented and subjected to the effects of three different nuclear explosions. After a thirteen-year "cool down" period, #44-83575 was sold as part of an 800-ton scrap pile and Aircraft Specialties Company began the restoration of the aircraft.

Damaged skin was fabricated and replaced on site; engines and props were stripped, cleaned, repaired, and tested; four thousand feet of new control cable was installed; all electrical wiring and instrumentation was replaced. As she neared completion, the jeers and laughter of those who said she would never fly again faded as the sounds of four 1200 HP Wright-Cyclone engines echoed across the desert and "Yucca Lady" rose as the phoenix and climbed into the sky.

For twenty years, without a major problem or incident, #44-83575 served as a fire bomber dropping water and borate on forest fires. She was sold in January 1986 to the Collings Foundation. Restored back to her original wartime configuration by Tom Reilly Vintage Aircraft, she represented one of the finest B-17 restorations and won several awards.

The Collings Foundation B-17 was named "Nine-O-Nine" in honor of a 91st Bomb Group, 323rd Squadron plane of the same name which completed 140 missions without an abort or loss of a crewman.

During the Inca Empire, the Inti Raymi was the most important of four ceremonies celebrated in Cusco, as related by Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. The celebration took place in the Haukaypata or the main plaza in the city.

The Inti Raymi ("Festival of the Sun") was a religious ceremony of the Inca Empire in honor of the god Inti, one of the most venerated gods in Inca religion. It really was the celebration of the Winter Solstice - the shortest day of the year in terms of the time between sunrise and sunset. In South America, which falls below the equator, the months of June & July are Winter months.

According to chronicler Garcilaso de la Vega, Sapa Inca Pachacuti created the Inti Raymi to celebrate the new year in the Andes of the Southern Hemisphere. Since 1944, a theatrical representation of the Inti Raymi has been taking place at Sacsayhuamán (two km. from Cusco) on June 24 of each year, attracting thousands of tourists and local visitors. The ceremony was also said to indicate the mythical origin of the Incas. It lasted for nine days and was filled with colorful dances and processions, as well as animal sacrifices to ensure a good cropping season. The last Inti Raymi with the Inca Emperor's presence was carried out in 1535, after which the Spanish conquest and the Catholic Church share it.

In 1944, a historical reconstruction of the Inti Raymi was directed by Faustino Espinoza Navarro and indigenous actors. The first reconstruction was largely based on the chronicles of Garcilaso de la Vega and only referred to the religious ceremony.

Inti Raymi is still celebrated in indigenous cultures throughout the Andes. Celebrations involve music, colorful costumes (most notable the woven aya huma mask) and the sharing of food. In many parts of the Andes, this celebration has been connected to the festivals of Saint John the Baptist, which falls on the day after the summer solstice (June 21).

Bapatean bi emakume kantatzen ari jatazan, pixkanaka beste batzuk bildu ziran, ta prestatu gabeko kantu sesio ederraz gozatzeko parada aeuki neban, horrelakoa da Dong herria...

Walking through Xiaohuang, i was whatched with curiosity by the villagers, i was rare for them as they were for me. Sudenly two women started singing a traditional song, and other grandmothers joined them to give us a great spectacle of there culture. Dong people is like that....

The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was conceived and largely built by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who, in 2003, received the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honour.

The Sydney Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007. Currently, it is the most recently constructed World Heritage Site to be designated as such, sharing this distinction with such ancient landmarks as Stonehenge and the Giza Necropolis. It is one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings and one of the most famous performing arts centres in the world.

The Sydney Opera House is situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It sits at the northeastern tip of the Sydney central business district (the CBD), surrounded on three sides by the harbour (Sydney Cove and Farm Cove) and neighboured by the Royal Botanic Gardens.

The Opera House was formally completed in 1973, having cost $102 million.

According to Wikipedia, the Red-footed Booby is a large seabird of the booby family. As suggested by the name, adults always have red feet, but the color of the plumage varies. They are powerful and agile fliers, but are clumsy in takeoffs and landings. They are found widely in the tropics, and breed colonially in coastal regions, especially islands. It is the smallest of all boobies at about 28 inches (70 cm) in length and with a wingspan of up over 3 feet (1m). In addition to its red feet, it also has red legs, and its bill and throat pouch are colored pink and blue. This species has several morphs: White, Black-tailed, Brown, White-tailed and White-headed. The morphs commonly breed together, but in most regions one or two morphs predominates; e.g. at the Galápagos Islands, most belong to the brown morph, though the white morph also occurs. The sexes are similar, and juveniles are brownish with darker wings and pale pinkish legs, while chicks are covered in dense white down.

Well, I finally made it back to Richmond Park yesterday, it's only taken me FIVE YEARS!!! Not been there since 2009!!! and I nearly didn't go yesterday either, because of initial bad weather and engineering works on the railway...it was a Sunday I guess, that's power for the course!!!

Anyhoo, I was rewarded with my FIRST ever Fallow deer Rut, which was pretty intense for 5 minutes!!

Hope everybody had a great Weekend..:)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ~ This article is about the deer genus. For other uses, see Dama (disambiguation).

Description ~ The male fallow deer is known as a buck, the female is a doe, and the young a fawn. Adult bucks are 140–160 cm (55–63 in) long with a 85–95 cm (33–37 in) shoulder height, and typically 60–100 kg (130–220 lb) in weight; does are 130–150 cm (51–59 in) long with a 75–85 cm (30–33 in) shoulder height, and 30–50 kg (66–110 lb) in weight. The largest bucks may measure 190 cm (75 in) long and weigh 150 kg (330 lb). Fawns are born in spring at about 30 cm (12 in) and weigh around 4.5 kg (9.9 lb). The life span is around 12–16 years.

The species has great variations in the colour of their coats, with four main variants, "common", "menil", melanistic and leucistic – a genuine colour variety, not albinistic. The white is the lightest coloured, almost white; common and menil are darker, and melanistic is very dark, sometimes even black (easily confused with the sika deer).

Common: Chestnut coat with white mottles that are most pronounced in summer with a much darker, unspotted coat in the winter. Light-coloured area around the tail, edged with black. Tail is light with a black stripe.

Menil: Spots more distinct than common in summer and no black around the rump patch or on the tail. In winter, spots still clear on a darker brown coat.

Melanistic (black): All year black shading to greyish-brown. No light-coloured tail patch or spots.

Leucistic (white, but not albino): Fawns cream-coloured, adults become pure white, especially in winter. Dark eyes and nose, no spots.

Most herds consist of the common coat variation, yet it is not rare to see animals of the menil coat variation. The Melanistic variation is rarer and white very much rarer still.

Only bucks have antlers, which are broad and shovel-shaped (palmate) from three years. In the first two years the antler is a single spike. They are gazing animals; their preferred habitat is mixed woodland and open grassland. During the rut bucks will spread out and females move between them, at this time of year fallow deer are relatively ungrouped compared to the rest of the year when they try to stay together in groups of up to 150.

Agile and fast in case of danger, fallow deer can run up to a maximum speed of 30 mph (48 km/h) over short distances (being naturally less muscular than other cervids such as roe deer, they are not as fast). Fallow deer can also make jumps up to 1.75 metres high and up to 5 metres in length.

View Large On Black Some people equate the terms bad and evil but there is a difference in the way these two terms are commonly used. As they are most commonly used, evil is the subset of all that is bad delineated from what is merely bad by a conscious intent to do harm. Something is bad if it causes harm but is only evil if some conscious being intended the harm. Evil carries a moral punch. The evil is in the intention. There are therefore bad things or events that are not definitively evil, at least as these two terms are commonly used. If a mudslide destroys a village and people die in their sleep, what has happened is very bad but not evil for it is merely an act of nature, but if somebody had a chance to warn them but didn’t because they wanted them to die, then their failure to warn them would be evil. The evil is in the intent to do harm or allow harm to be done.

The above photo is highly manipulated but is “based on reality”. The reality rests in the two photos that I took within thirty hours of each other. On the first day, I was driving around the beltline on the east side of my home town when I saw this vehicle with the sign, “CAUTION, DO NOT TAILGATE, SHOW GOAT SEMEN ON BOARD.” I quickly grabbed my camera and captured the image you see above, well, most of that image. There was another image that formed in my mind, an image based on but differing from the reality of the photograph that I had just taken. I wanted to make a point. The next day, I spotted a car that was rather ordinary, but it displayed what I wanted to complete the image that had formed in my mind, an Obama bumper sticker. I quickly photographed the back of that car.

After I downloaded the two images from my camera onto my computer, I changed the name of the company printed on the truck to “Superboy Semen”, the license plate number to 666-OWW and removed the owner’s phone number and other identifying information. Then I added the Obama’ 08 sign to the back. The Obama’08 sign was on the back a parked car to my right and the photo was taken from a different angle than the back of the goat semen truck which was to my left. I first changed the perspective (angle) of the Obama’08 bumper sticker to match what it would have been on the back of the truck and then resized it. Then I transferred it to the truck, erased the sticker part of it and changed the color and blur of the lettering to somewhat match the “CAUTION, DO NOT TAILGATE . . . ” sign immediately above it. Finally, after a few more minor changes, I photoshopped seven layers of the altered image and merged them into a final composite which you see above.

The result is a photo I can truthfully say is “based on the truth” because the truck really existed as did the Obama’08 sticker. Now it was not my intention to pick on Obama, I actually admire the guy, but to make this point. I don’t like underhanded, manipulated news reporting on any issue. How can I vote my conscious if I‘m being mislead? How can I know what or who to support if I am being fed partial lies? My purpose in posting this photo is to show graphically what members of JournoList did verbally and graphically on a regular basis to manipulate the news to support their candidates and causes. The big difference is that I am telling you what I did openly and out front. What they did, they did it in secret, never intending to tell their readers and listeners. Did they do evil? Did they intend to harm anybody? Well they harmed the voters right to know the whole truth and they conspired to harm opponents with spurious news stories that they released separately, but in unison. I’ve always admired (not) the ability of the liberal media to be outraged in lockstep. Now we have proof how they do it. One thing we can be sure, what these JournoList members did was a bad way to report the news. This is not a minor problem.

"Ten bucks for head, fifteen for half-and-half". She says "Three hits a day at 35 per", you say "that's seven tricks a day at least", but she says "sometimes I get lucky. Once this guy gives me a bill-and-half just to eat me, only time I ever came".

You figure you can save her.

You sell your color TV, that keeps her off the streets a whole day. You hawk your typewriter for one job. Then your shotgun, your watch. A week later you say "Listen I'm a little short", but she says "No scratch, no snatch". You say "Look it is better to give", but she says "Beat off creep". One night they spot you on the street in your skibbies, trying to sell your shoes. You tell them who you are, but they nail you. Then she happens by and she says " Christ, you look fucked",

she says "Hang tough!". But you don't say anything, you just think "what a bum rap for a nice, sensitive guy like me".

Everybody loves HK's trams. The French love it so much that they decided to keep it. So the news said the French company Veolia Transport will own 100% of HK's tram company from March 2010. As a selffish being, my biggest concern is whether my daily commute will get from HK$2 to 2 Euros. The news also said that the French will turn the interior "colourful" and have seats completely rearranged. I can only pray that the French do not paint this tram (numbered 120) red, white and blue (red and yellow are worse) or change anything more than subtle.

Among other dignitaries a group of Native Indian (First Nations) peoples were invited to help celebrate the opening of the Peralta Hacienda Historical Park

These men and women represent the Miwok, Ohlone, and Cheyenne nations. They blessed the dedication of the Hacienda and cleansed the spirits with offerings of sage and song. This concludes this portion of the cowboys adventure. Sorry I have been so slow in responding there is a lot going on at work

It was a very poorly lit street but the D700 with the Nikon AF-S 24mm f/1.4G lens does its magic with incredible details restitution. Due to their exquisite sharpness and unmatched color rendition, the Voigtlander Nokton 58mm SLII and this latest 24mm from Nikon are my two favorite lenses for night photography (Color or B&W). Here I am pleased of the reproduction of the texture from the cobblestone street and the wood door as well as the curved lines - a quasi graphical composition - of the cobblestones fading away in the dead end road.

Nikon D700 and lens Nikkor AF-S 24mmG ED mounted on Gitzo tripod. Taken at ISO 1000, 1/5s, f/3.5 with mirror locked-up and RF wireless remote Phottix Cleon II. B&W Post processing with silver Efex Pro and Lightroom 3.

259 x 160 x 68 cm (102 x 63 x 27 in)

Towering at 8 1/2 feet, armoires like this can only be found in grand houses owned by wealthy hacienderos. Found in the main bedroom to store and keep neatly folded clothes and other valuables, the pediment crown of this Gothic Revival piece has bolection moldings decorated with beads and reels, bulbous finials at the corners, acanthus flanges, and topped by pierced foliated and flowering scrolls that overflow at the center with large bulbous campanilla or bellflowers and acanthus leaves they appear to be protuberating as they dangle from the crown. Cabinet doors and sides have confirming double lancet arches appliqued all around with bead and reel moldings, and at the spandrels are leafy rose flowers in deep relief and are exceptionally palpable. Similar bolection moldings below the doors frame the large keyholed drawer with iron bail pull, above a secret drawer disguised as a simple faschia, and the block feet supports. Inside are ample shelvings and a pair of smaller drawers. The crown, main carcase, and the bottom drawers can be detached for portability.

COMUNICATO STAMPA:

GREENPEACE IN 18 CITTA’: BOLLETTE NUCLEARI, COSTI STELLARI

Day 2 of lighting class was fun. We did a bit more on angles & the best ways to light a stage, before moving onto coloured gels and learning about additive mixing and how actually when you subtract colours it comes up with something which you wouldn't actually expect. & then mix some colours together & where you'd expect white you actually got black. We looked at a lighting plan then, & the grid looked quite complicated at first, but once I understood what I looked at it was quite easy to read. Helen said I now probably know more than Tristam about lighting. After taking this course I now see how little Tristam knew about lighting while he was at school. It's quite amazing really. If I'd been him I would have wanted to know more!

I offered to help Helen rigging when she has a production on, & she said if they hire out a moving light then I can come & play about with it, which would be awesome. When I was walking home there were all the new students & prefects arriving & I felt sorta sad. I have so many memories in this place, & now there are all these new students here, & they'll be making memories now. At one point during the class we were up in the lighting box, & on the wall was a label with 'The Stage Tech Mascot' written on it, & it was in Lauren's handwriting & I remembered her writing it, & placing this little toy above it, & I thought about all the memories I've had over the years in that box, & realised that I was probably the only one left around here who remembers them, because everyone else has left. It just made me a little sad.

I had a fight with my Mom after dinner, because she kept saying I was basically going to waste my life, or at least this year, & I have done everything to prove that is not the case. And I think Max & I are fighting. I'm not sure. We were both arguing sometime at the beginning of the week, & then I went online & he wasn't there, & then I didn't have time to go online. So he text me today, & said 'Hope you are well. X' which I thought was rather formal, so I asked if he'd be online tonight, & he said yes, but that he couldn't text today because he was busy, & I was so pissed off because I was busy with a class all day, & it just annoyed me that he'd assumed I was expecting to text him all day. & now he's not online which is so annoying.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’.

Abe BIRNBAUM •

* 18 November 1898 in New York City, NY.

✝︎ 19 June 1966 in Lenox Hospital, New York.

The New Yorker — November 18, 1951.

Issue 1918 — Volume 37 — Number 40.

About BIRNBAUM ↓

Abe Birnbaum painted nearly 200 covers for The New Yorker magazine.

Mr. Birnbaum's last New Yorker cover appeared on the issue of May 28. In the bold and simple lines that were the stamp of his style, he drew two white sails on blue-green water under a broad blue sky.

Mr. Birnbaum represented people and objects in their most uncomplicated terms. A Lincoln Day cover several years ago showed only the hint of a stovepipe hat and some red, white, and blue bunting.

He contributed more portraits and drawings to the magazine's Profile and Reporter at Large sections than any other artist. His portraits, done in pen and ink and brush, reduced the face in one or two lines to what it was supposed to be a profile.

▪️Versatile Illustrator

Mr. Birnbaum did portraits of Henry Moore, the sculptor, and Abe H. Feder, a theatrical lighting man. In addition, he drew hockey players, hurricanes and illustrations for articles on television, smoking and cricket.

The magazine also used thousands of Mr. Birnbaum's spot drawings on inside pages that punctuated and indented columns of type. For one long story on burglary, he drew a keyhole that was described as "the most intensely keyhole keyhole there has ever been."

Mr. Birnbaum was an exacting craftsman. In the studio of his home in Croton, N.Y. surrounded by most of his 15 cats, he would draw an object such as a chair 200 times or more to get it right.

"Nothing is ugly," he said often. "Everything is what it is."

Mr. Birnbaum also drew illustrations for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and The New York Times Sunday drama section. He had illustrated several books, including "Green Eyes,” which a jury picked as the best-illustrated children's book of 1953. The most recent book he illustrated is another juvenile title, “Did a Bear Just Walk There,” by Ann Rand.

▪️ At Art Students League

Born in Manhattan, Mr. Birnbaum studied at the Art Students League under Boardman Robinson and Kenneth Hayes Miller.

Mr. Birnbaum had held exhibitions at the Carnegie Institute and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Almost 2000 years ago, four writers recorded the life and teaching of Jesus. The first four books in the New Testament bear their names: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Matthew was one of Jesus' twelve disciples. He offers a first-hand account of what Jesus said and did over a three-year period.

Luke was a physician who became a follower of Jesus after Jesus' life on earth. He spent time with many who were close to Jesus during His earthly ministry. Jesus' mother Mary gave Luke a mother's insight into the birth and early life of Jesus.

John wrote the last of the four histories. Of the twelve disciples, no one was closer to Jesus than John. He was the disciple who stood alone at the foot of the cross. Jesus demonstrated His great trust in John by committing to John the care of His mother Mary. At the time he wrote the last of the four histories, John was the only disciple of the original twelve who was still living.

Mark's record is the earliest of the four accounts. A young boy during the latter part of Jesus' life, Mark grew up to travel with Peter, one of Jesus' first followers and closest friends. Peter was a fisherman who followed Christ personally and traveled with Him for more than three years. We know from early church historians that Mark wrote what he learned from Peter as he preached about Jesus to all who would listen. Irenaeus wrote in A.D. 175, "Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, also transmitted to us in writing the things preached by Peter."

Of the four histories, Mark's Gospel is the simplest, shortest and most direct presentation of Jesus' life, written in the common language of the marketplace. None of the other Gospels devotes as great a portion of its content to Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection. Mark does not mention Christ's genealogy or birth. Instead, he begins his Gospel by describing John the Baptist's preaching and baptism, followed by the baptism and temptation of Jesus. Then he leads into Jesus' public ministry in Galilee, giving special attention to His miraculous works that prove Him to be the Son of God.

As in all Peter's sermons about Jesus recorded in the Book of Acts, the presentation about Christ in the Gospel of Mark answers two simple but critical questions. It is divided almost perfectly in two equal halves, the first presenting who Jesus is and the second presenting why He gave His life.

From the earliest part of chapter 1 through the end of chapter 8, Mark records Jesus' miraculous works and repeatedly draws attention to the significance of who Jesus is. That is why in the first half of Mark's gospel the word "who" occurs so often.

In the first chapter, Mark clearly declares that Jesus is the Son of God1 Even demons gave this testimony: "I know who you are — the Holy One of God!" But, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak, "because they knew who he was."2

In chapter 2, the scribes said, "Who can forgive sins but God alone?"3 In chapter 4, after Jesus miraculously calmed the storm, the disciples said to one another, "Who then is this that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"4

The climax of Mark's presentation of who Jesus is in the first half of the book comes at the close of chapter 8: "And Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, 'Who do people say that I am?' And they told Him, saying, 'John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.' And He continued by questioning them, 'But who do you say that I am?' Peter answered and said to Him, 'You are the Christ.'"5

The second half of Mark's 16 chapters describe the final week of Jesus' life on earth — His suffering, death and resurrection. In a series of statements Jesus reveals the purpose for which He was sent into the world: "He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again."6 "He said to His disciples, 'The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.'"7 ''We are going up to Jerusalem,' he said, 'and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.'"8

Also contained in Mark are three dramatic "confessions." In the first verse, Mark himself confesses Jesus as the Son of God. 9 This is followed by Peter's confession in the middle of the book, "You are the Christ,"10 and builds to the Roman centurion's confession, "Surely this man was the Son of God!"11

As you read through Mark's record of the life and teachings of Jesus, you will discover that His life touches the very center of your life.

Delicious full frame goodness....

It was a tough decision between this shot and another out-take. Because of the wide aperture, very close composition and full frame camera, the dof is extreme - so much so that the image might be considered oof (the focus point was the filling in the middle of the 1st wrap). But I went with this cos I liked how the dof worked on this image.

I am thankful that I have always had food to eat now as well as when I was growing up. Its a blessing that is too easily forgotten.

With that in mind, if you ever thought you had a terrible childhood, look at these images - however bad it may seem, someone has always has had it worse... and for that we should all be thankful!

Vita mia, non sappiamo piu' afferrare,

maneggiare, questo Amore che

svanisce e sguscia via.

Ti sei intristita e poi...

poi ti sei stranita non dici più :

" Che bel tempo sei Tu! "

Infatti piove, vorresti uscire

e raffreddarti insieme a me.

Io vestito, leggerissimo vorrei

e mi abbandonerei,

per veder di nuovo la vita mia,

rapidissimo addio.

anch'io ho scalato anch'io e annidato lassù.

l'ho abbracciata in Te.

venni a dirlo a dirlo a Te,

ti confidai che eri Tu ora mai.

C'è un temporale, possiamo uscire

e raffreddarci insieme ormai,

tremare, perche' tremare fà

la vita che se ne và

con Te che porti via, con Te,

la la Vita mia...

Papaver rhoeas (Klatschmohn, Corn Poppy, Red Poppy)

Ecocentro Danaus (<-- video) is located a couple miles east of La Fortuna Costa Rica. It's a fairly small reserve, 600 meters of walking trails, but boy, do they pack a LOT in such a small area. Danaus was created about 13 years ago when some forward thinking people decided it might be better to grow life than cut it down. Danaus is like a mini oasis since it's completely surrounded by pasture and cattle land. Here's what Ecocentro Danaus says about itself: 'Ecocentro Danaus is an ecological reserve that preserves a natural regenerating secondary forest. Many different biological processes take place here and there is a great biodiversity of flora and fauna in its natural state.'Danaus is worth a look if your in the La Fortuna area and you need something to do for a couple hours.

I never have seen wallnuts with three compartments.

Nunca he visto nueces con tres compartimentos.

ENGLISH

The walnut was introduced into western and northern Europe very early, by Roman times or earlier, and to the Americas by the 17th century, by English colonists. Important nut-growing regions include France, Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania in Europe, China in Asia, California in North America, and Chile in South America. Lately the crop has spread to another regions: New Zealand and southeast of Australia. It is cultivated extensively for its high-quality nuts, eaten both fresh and pressed for their richly flavoured oil; numerous cultivars have been selected for larger nuts with thinner shells.

The walnut marketing industry has issued a press release interpreting a 2006 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology to mean that eating walnuts after a meal high in saturated fats can reduce the damaging effects of such fats on blood vessels. Researchers from Barcelona's Hospital Clinic conducted a study on 24 adult participants, half of whom had normal cholesterol levels, and half of whom had moderately high levels of cholesterol. Each group was fed two high-fat meals of salami and cheese, eaten one week apart. During one meal, the researchers supplemented the food with five teaspoons of olive oil; the researchers added 40 g shelled walnuts to the other meal.

Tests after each meal showed that neither the olive oil nor the walnuts had any effect on inflammatory substances or lipid oxidation in the blood samples taken after the meals. However, the participants with moderately high cholesterol levels exhibited increased arterial wall movement after the meal containing walnuts and decreased movement after the meal containing olive oil. The participants who had normal cholesterol levels showed a much smaller effect on arterial movement.

CASTELLANO

¡Ja!

Thousands demonstrated on Friday in Tahrir Square, demanding public trial of Mubarak, his interior ministry Habib el-Adly, and other regime figures.

The square and the surrounding streets since early morning have been emptied from all police and military presence. Most of the established political forces, most notably the Muslim Brothers, did not take part in the demonstrations.

The families of the martyrs were present, and demanded speedy trials of the police murderers, as it's becoming clear day by day that they will get away with what they did. More shockingly, most police officers who are currently undergoing trial still hold their positions (or have been promoted)! Demonstrators also denounced the brutal police crackdown on the protests in the square on Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Protesters marched, in solidarity with the detainees, by 4pm on the ministerial cabinet headquarters and the interior ministry. Policemen from inside the interior ministry's compound threw rocks and were making provocative gestures with their hands. Protesters responded by rocks and a shower of insults and chants against both the military and the police.

I've heard very strong chants, demanding the execution of Mubarak, Adly and Field Marshal Tantawi. While some are staging a sit in at the moment, others will resume protesting on Saturday, in the run up to the mass protests planned next Friday 8 July.

If By Chance Your Eye Offend You

If by chance your eye offend you,

Pluck it out, lad, and be sound:

'Twill hurt, but here are salves to friend you,

And many a balsam grows on ground.

And if your hand or foot offend you,

Cut it off, lad, and be whole;

But play the man, stand up and end you,

When your sickness is your soul.

- A.E. Housman

I was thumbing through my book of poems by A.E. Housman this morning and stumbled across this poem. I don't know why, but in high school, I highlighted this poem and made all kinds of notes in the margin. I guess I must have thought I could relate to the sickness of the soul part. It's funny how intensely you experience everything when you're young. Time and age give you the perspective to look back and make horrifically patronizing comments to teenagers like "you have no idea what love really is." Of course they do. Just like we did when we were young. It's not that you don't understand love or hate or those emotions. It's that you haven't had enough experience with them at that point in your life to be able to look at them with any kind of perspective and realize that life is so cyclical that you'll experience these very same emotions many times again. Time gives you the experience that builds your armour so you can better handle pain. Or at least, in my experience it has.

Ok, no idea why I'm rambling today. When I read the poem, I had this idea for my selfie today, but I really couldn't get the processing the way I wanted it. So I'm going to stop obsessing over it and just post this. It's not exactly what I envisioned when I set out to do this shoot, but it'll do.

I LOOK AT THE SKY HOLDING MY HANDS OVER MY EYES

Thu: I have noticed that assholes tend to come in groups! Days i can go with lovely people around me, then rest of the week is wanker overload! But i have decided that other peoples' crap is their problem not mine. I just need to let it wash over me and try to see the glass half full! My that was cheesy wasn't it?

SECRET #14: Don't let the sweet pink-haired girl stopping to smell the flowers fool you, she is a bitch! When my camel is getting tired and some random extra straw gets tossed on me i lose it hardcore. It is not something i am proud of and i always say sorry right after (well, unless they really deserved it). But that seems to be a family trait and not one that i wish to carry or pass on. I have seen what letting anger and discontent take over your heart can do to you and your family, not gonna let it be me.
