During World War I Aurora operated in the Baltic Sea performing patrols and shore bombardment tasks. In 1915, her armament was changed to fourteen 152 mm (6 in) guns. At the end of 1916, she was moved to Petrograd (the renamed St Petersburg) for a major repair. The city was brimming with revolutionary ferment and part of her crew joined the 1917 February Revolution. A revolutionary committee was created on the ship, with Aleksandr Belyshev elected as captain. Most of the crew joined the Bolsheviks, who were preparing for a Communist revolution.

At 9.45 p.m on 25 October 1917 (O.S.) a blank shot from her forecastle gun signaled the start of the assault on the Winter Palace, which was to be the beginning of the October Revolution. In summer 1918, she was relocated to Kronstadt and placed into reserve

Second World War.

In 1922, Aurora was brought to service again as a training ship. Assigned to the Baltic Fleet, from 1923, she repeatedly visited the Baltic Sea countries, including Norway in 1924, 1925, 1928 and 1930, Germany in 1929 and Sweden in 1925 and 1928. During the Second World War, the guns were taken from the ship and used in the land defence of Leningrad. The ship herself was docked in Oranienbaum port, and was repeatedly shelled and bombed. On 30 September 1941 she was damaged and sunk in the harbour.

After extensive repairs in 1945 - 1947, Aurora was permanently anchored on the Neva in Leningrad (now St Petersburg) as a monument to the Great October Socialist Revolution and in 1957 became a museum-ship.

On 2 November 1927, Aurora was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for her revolutionary merits and on 22 February 1968 the Order of the October Revolution. The latter features the image of the cruiser herself.

So in this photo, it appears as though I am restoring the UP (CNW) route for autopilot. When a train was to arrive here, the operator was called from home and would then show up. You would then call the EJ&E chief on the phone and let him know you're there and they would call back shortly and let you know of the trains arrival. This night I would be running #21 (Joliet to Waukegan turn).

#21 would make stops at Munger, Spaulding, Leithton, Rondout and Waukegan. Most of his train was for Rondout.

West Chicago would also let you know when the train went west, and vice-versa. The date was July 3rd, 2001. Jason Tykac or my dads photo I believe.

The colored levers marked "East" & "West" were out of service train order levers. They sat in positions 19 & 20 in the interlocking bed.

Pictured here is Go-Ahead London WVN45 on route 217, about to begin it’s journey towards Waltham Cross on the first day of operation with Go-Ahead London two weeks ago, which by sheer coincidence happened to be on the same day of my 24th birthday! I decided not to ride the route though due to my bias against TfL vehicles not introduced from their original operator, as the ex-First B9TLs were the only fleet appearing on the 217’s first day of GAL.

This route has been moving around a lot recently as it operated with Metroline until 2017, which then saw 217 passing to Sullivan Buses that run till August, when the entire company abolished itself from all TfL services, leading to the route getting temporarily awarded to Arriva on an emergency contract before shifting over once again to Go-Ahead, albeit only on a one year contract.

This makes 217 one of the TfL routes with the largest amount of bus companies in a short space of time with four in total, though I do believe route E10 currently holds this record with five operators running the route within less than ten years and I’m definitely sure the chances of it happening to another route at present are slim to none, due to former operators in London such as Tower Transit and Quality Line being sold.
