Carte de visite by an unidentified photographer. A cartoon drawing with photographic heads pictures a Union major general resting a hand on the body of an elephant shackled to a post. The pencilled notation above and below the illustration states:
Open every Tuesday
evening in Tibbitts
Block Utica N.Y.
at 8 o'clock.
Ben. Davis & Levi North's
Menagerie & Circus.
Admission 50 cts.
Children half price.
N.B. Do not worry the elephant nor feed him.
An inscription on he back in the same hand adds "This was taken perhaps 15 or 20 years ago. VN"
Two possible explanations for the origin of this image: It is a political cartoon about some aspect of Utica civil or business dealings that involve a former Union officer, or a mockup of an advertisement to be typeset and engraved for print publication.
Searches for the identities of the two men pictured turned up no results. A performer and circus operator named Levi James North (1814-1885) from Long Island, N.Y., was active in America for many years. Known as “America’s Own Horseman," an engraving of him does not match either likeness.
I encourage you to use this image for educational purposes only. However, please ask for permission.

This was taken in 1990. It was a source of income at that time for me. Autocar is the oldest truck manufacturer in the US. It was powered by a Detroit 8V92 twin turbo 475HP diesel connected to a 15 speed overdrive transmission. It had air ride and a walk-in sleeper. It had taken me to most of the 48 contiguous states hauling tanker trailers and hazardous materials. It was a lot of fun being a professional tourist. Before you make any stupid trucker comments, "I got your Good Buddy right here."

These photos will be my main reference for my next project, just something fun to do. It'll be a a much larger scale than usual, but I'm up for the challenge. I want to motorize what I can, as well
Well could you help me place this call?
What, you're not a Jim Croce fan?
The years have neglect have not been kind to the MKT Depot at Beagle. This is what's left of the building today, just a few yards from its original location across the track. As late as the 1960's this station was staffed by an agent.
It was purchased in the 1980's and moved to this location by the Co-Op that owned the elevator to the west. Even though it was in fresh paint in 1988, the structure fell into disrepair after interest in preservation waned, leaving only these ruins behind.
Here we're looking from the freight room into the operator room, and towards the ticket window and passenger waiting room.

ALTO Tower operator "Mumbles" writes down a the numbers of an Altoona based helper set cutting in ahead on NS's westbound 17G from Oak Island NJ to Conway PA along with the road power before its climb up the 2.2% grade through Horseshoe Curve and points westward.
By this time, in early spring of 2012 the towers days were numbered. With a new signal and interlocking modernization process under way to eliminate the need of a controlled interlocking by the tower and turn it over to a dispatcher.
The project, unfortunately for the tower and its operator's was completed in the early parts of summer 2012, nearly a year behind the original set scheduled date.
By early June in the project's progression, almost all of the interlocking switches inside the tower were now red tagged and put out of service. And for any that may have remained in service, they would be handled during the MofW curfew set in place to rip out the old Pennsy Position Lights, cut in the brand new signals, remove/cut off any of the old interlockings configurement and lastly turn it over to Altoona East Dispatcher.
When the clock struck about 11AM on that fateful morning of June 16th 2012, ALTO's last operator was escorted out of the tower and across the mainline by the road foreman.
Effectively and permenantly ending 97 years of continuous service, which had managed to survive through 2 mergers (NYC-PRR) (CSX/NS split of CR), 3 railroads (PRR, PC and CR) and successfully lasting 13 years under the control of Norfolk Southern Railway.
ALTO Tower was the only operational tower on the entire Pittsburgh Division in 2012 and outlasted other multiple towers on the mountain between Altoona and Pittsburgh alone. Some as much as 2 nearly 3 decades, while others nearly a decade.
Some of these other towers were such as following:
SO Tower (Southfork, PA) (Razed after being burned by arsonists)
C Tower (Conemaugh, PA) (Razed)
MO Tower (Cresson, PA) (Collasped in on itself while trying to be transported by the CRHS)
AR Tower (Gallitzin, PA)
MG Tower (Altoona, PA)
The famous tower still stands currently and there is discussions with NS being made on saving the tower. No further details have been released as of 11/25/12.
