Dance is a song of the body. Either of joy or pain.

– Martha Graham

I love photographing Cuba. I love photographing ballet dancers. I particularly love photographing Cuban ballet dancers. So if one dance is good then photographing two is better. What I love about photographing dancers is that there is no editor between their heart and the the physicality of the there expression. This image is of the ballerina Kamila Quinones Ruiz and the balirino Marco Hinder Vincent.

This is the second image from my latest trip to Cuba. WHAT A BLAST that was. I shot this image withe new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 Plena lens. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot.

This image was captured on my American Photo Assignment to Burma. We were waiting to take a ferry across the river from Yangon to "parts unknown....." This young boy was waiting too. I tried to wake him when the ferry arrived but he was to tired even look up.

Pro tip: The most important thing to remember when shooting in both India and Burma is "watch where you step."

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.

I shot this on a very chilly morning in San Francisco (Then again all mornings are very chilly in San Francisco).

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of this brushes will be staying home. This lens has a permanent place in my camera bag.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of the D5- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

I shot this yesterday at 7:30am for my class on using Nikon's Studio NX as the one and only raw processor if you shoot Nikon.

Raw processed in Studio NX, No color correction, nothing else. Picture Control is set to Standard. Control Points were used to darken the background in In Studio NX. Some dust removal, schmaltz removal and specular highlight reduction in Photoshop using generative fill. No other adjustments to color, sharpness or contrast. Shot with a with 105mm MC. The final Pixel Shite images is 46.75 inches by 30.972 inches at 360 ppi.

Sunshine is the most precious gold to be found on Earth, – Roman Payne

From my three weeks in Namibia—

To seen by something as large as a rhinoceros in a zoo is one thing but to be 10 feet away and have nothing between yo and it is truly humbling .

I was gobsmacked how everything in front of me caused me to just slowed down to the speed of life.

I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Tuning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”

I have wanted to travel to Namibia for over 40 years. It all started with the second CD I ever purchased Sanford Ponder’s Etoshia” In the Land of Dry Water.

AND to answer the next question YES I will be organizing a workshop there.

I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR 28-400mm f/4-8 lens. mage raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. For me the pretty is in the blur. The main reason I shoot and have always shot Nikon is quality of the Nikkor lenses. Every lens has beautiful Bokeh. All lenses focus, that's what they do. But it is how a lens handles from in focus to blur that defines the greatness of a lens. This is at f5.6 at 150mm. I shot this image 4;30am and 6:30am in Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens.

This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

Image was post processed with Capture NXD, Photoshop CC 2017, Nik collection by Google and onOnesoftware.

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba. It was sunset. II was doing one of my guilty pleasures in Havana. Riding in a “Coco”. The Cuban version of a TukTuk. I had talked the driver to go down the Malicon, something they try not to do. Don’t know why. I love riding in a Coco down the Malicon the sea breeze and the occasional splash of water is just a pleasure that makes me giggle. We were waiting for the light to change. Even when you are doing the most mundane of things, waiting for the light to change, if you pay attention a visual moment will show itslf

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D810. The lens was 105mm f 1.4. Arguably the best lens Nikon has ever made. Certainly the best lens I have ever shot with.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject.

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

This is an image of the Cuban Ballerina Elena. In this shot we were on the roof of a building in central Havana in between rain showers.

The light source was ambient rainy daylight.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

Memory Monday......

Coolpix 950 image. Campaign Code name "Stunning Lust". Lit with a Westcott sunlight reflector this the back door of my old "Hollywood" Studio. It took the camera 3 seconds from hitting the shutter at full resolution 1.92MP TIF to fire and a minute 47 seconds to write to the card in 1999. Ahhhh... the salad days of digital. Oh yeah I had to walk up hill in the snow in both directions to go to my studio which was just a wet paper bag open at both ends AND I was grateful....

I shot this image of Jenna Ortega on the set of the movie Saving Flora. It’s been a minute since I capture this. I thought I had posted it. I have been asked to do Glynn Dewis’s podcast and he needs images. I could not find this image anywhere and had tog to thee archive. I do not even have it in a slideshow.

What stuck with me to this day was how giving an gracious she was and how she lit up a camera. I have been a fan of hers ever since that moment.

I shot this with a then prototype Nikon D5 and my favorite lens at the time the 105 f1.4. which I shot the ad campaign for because according to the Japanese marketing firm “my work was the most blurry of all the ambassadors.” I still don’t know how to take that

Sooo back to the dancers and musicians part of this broadcast..... (from my last trip to Cuba with Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Cuba workshop)

This image is of the singer Miguel Currillo Tavin of Stepteto Habanero.

There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant. You can truly create a place when the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera/

There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.

This is one of those images that you cannot believe that everything conspired to happen at the right time in the right moment so fast you had no time to second guess yourself. A pure moment of Shibumi. I have a 80-400mm Nano lens on my D800 IR camera, I am in a slightly faster than I would like moving boat going in the opposite direction as the fisherman. I set the camera to the "Yo D800 you find the focus" mode. Which I used to think was a gimmick, truth be told, but when it comes to being in a moving object whilst photographing a moving object, it is the only way to fly.

The image was captured by a Nikon D-800, camera modified for infrared. Super Enhanced color conversion with a 80-400 mm Nano coated VR II lens at 400iso using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) S. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Photoshop CS, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efex Pro 2.0.

I am in Cuba (again) this time with the Nikon D5. this is the start of the ballet shoot. This is one of the ballerina on point in color. Just ambient light 16000 iso.

So so if you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source. Now you know.

However...... There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa..... Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.

You're a refraction of the one light. You're a waveform of light. You're a fractal, a pattern that continuously changes.

--Frederick Lenz

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

I was employee number six of Altamira group, the creators of Genuine Fractals scaling technology and the second employee of Niksoftware. That goes back to the time when dirt was discovered. Why I bring this up is my complete and utter fascination with the concept that everything in the universe is a fractal, no two fractals are the same but in the same exact place after a series of random numbers is The Thumbprint of God. A perfect mathematical fractal, such as the famous Mandelbrot set— this self-similarity goes infinitely deep: each pattern made up of smaller copies of itself and those smaller copies made up of smaller copies again, forever.

What does the above have to do with this image you ask? There is the whole totality of the car, then there are the smaller parts of the self similarity of the car that are part of the whole and yet completely different. That thought just fascinates me. So if you wonder why you see a lot a parts of the micro and macro world of reality. Now you know.

More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.

This is of the one of my favorite people to photograph the actress Karen Witter Lorre.

I shot this with a Nikon F5 a Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso. Scanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.

In the course of our day we tend to forget that we the world around us travels at the speed of life and not at the speed of lost in our thoughts. Our physical bodies are moving at one speed and our consciousness is moving not in sync generally somewhere else.I have found that being able to to slow both mind and body to the same speed, the speed of life, is the key to achieving a n interesting plainest, the most difficult thing to achieve.

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba. Patterns are interesting but patterns interrupts are more interesting. I believe that Human visual perception is the more important consideration when working and framing/composing an image not 17th century painting theory. I also believes that all images, or in my case, all my images are optical illusions and just a variation of the “French Drop” coin trick. Oh yeah- I love photographing Cuban Ballet dancers.

If you are out there shooting, things will happen for you. If you’re not out there, you’ll only hear about it.

— Jay Maisel

I have had a personal project going on 35 years to find photographs of New York City from the stories told to me by my father. Some of them involve memories from having been there with him when I was child, some were his memories of when he was young. Every year when I went to visit I would bring him the images I found of the past that was present the day I clicked the shutter.

He may have passed on to wherever we pass on to but I still make it a point to seek out those places. That now has evolved into being part of my Turning the last Page project.

This image is of the view of the subway station that we would take to get into the "City" and in 1964 & 65 to get to the New York World's Fair.

THe greates gift you can give both yourself and someone else is a memory.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D500.

I shot this whilst walking down Columbus street in NYC on the west side. There was a scaffolding above me because there were repairs happening over head. and the daylight was streaming through a crack in the planking. When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me

Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

When you dance, you can enjoy the luxury of being you.

— Paulo Coelho

More from “Making up for lost time. A lot of what I have shot since March I cannot show for a bit.” collection

Nothing makes my day more when the people, even better dancers, I am photographing have yet to register that I am being taken by the to click the shutter. The power of a dual sensor camera is there is no shutter. Which means there is no sound. Because of this there is no awareness of the decisive moment being captured.

Cannot say the enough- A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject of the picture is not in motion.

This image is from most recent trip to Cuba.

Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting and post processing my images- Then I went Cuba. Then I came back 0n the 6th. Then I had to put my entire studio back together from prepping to bug out from the fires

That said…

In my work I I am in the practice of practicing. Practice does not make perfect, a perfect practice makes perfect. Which is why I always am practicing at practicing. With the pursuit of attaining the Zen state of Shibumi- effortless perfection and elegance. A state of doing that is thoughtful thoughtless thought.

For me this image of Cuban Olympic boxer Alejandro Iglesias. I was at the gym he trains at, a place I have been going for 20 years. The background is a chainlink fence that separates the practice areas. The clouds part for a moment and a Godbeam of light shown through and he was standing there in the boxing ring interrupting the beautiful light. The moment only lasted two frames and the work began to move again. But in that moment we were all part of the whole of that moment.

On January 7th I had to purchase a new laptop. The reason? The size of D800 files. To process one from start to finish it felt like I was passing a birthday every time I worked on one. Soooo I decided that it was time to suck it up and buy a new machine. The machine I decided on was the non Retina display 15 inch 2.7 Macbook pro with a 1TB hard drive. The reason? Glossy screens in the field do not work for me and a hard wired hard drive that I cannot replace should I need to (I have yet to own a laptop where I have not needed to) is not a prudent choice for someone who works his laptop as hard as I do. I get that this is the future, but for now I can still delay the inevitable. Also it has an Ethernet port, Firewire 800 USB 3 and Thunderbolt. SO everything I own today works.

This time I decided to suck it up and instead of doing the transfer of software from old to new, I would do a complete clean install of ALL of the software. Which is, on the very best day and by anyone's measure, not my idea of a good time. To compound this joyous experience I was leaving for Burma (Myanmar) first thing in the morning January 8th. So January 7th I had every computer I own download all of the software that I needed from the internet. The plan install on the airplane all software.

One of the things that happens is laptops, if you travel a lot and live on your laptop, become like the closet of a college student the night before the parents come to visit him the dorm; filled with EVERYTHING you have ever owned. The other thing is you take that for granted. You just accept that everything you need is just there 'cuz..well.. it's just there. I replace my laptop every three years and the one I was replacing was going on four years, so yeah it was time.

Well I did not think to actually BRING the old laptop....

So when I went to install all the software I did not have the any of the serial numbers. Because the folder that is in my Documents folder "ALL_SERIAL_NUMBERS" was not on my new laptop it was on my old laptop. Did I mention I was going to Burma? And did I mention where I was going in Burma was the Himalayas to photograph remote mountain tribes? To say the internet is slow in Burma would be to give slow internet a bad name, and to think that there would be internet access in the huts of remote mountain tribes in the Himalayas? So I was left as an option "demo mode" for all of my software.

Which worked! I had to click "demo" everytime I lauched anything, but I caused this issue so I had only me to blame (I hate that when that happens... yelling at yourself is only fun for those watching).

So yesterday I was in Florida ( I live in Los Angeles, I flew straight to Miami from Yangon Burma, or 31 hours, to teach). Well the demos timed out. Most importantly the demo for my beloved Niksoftware Color Efex Pro 4 timed out... It was not until that moment that I realized just how important and how much of my imaging relies of that technology. In the simplest of terms I cannot creat the images that I create without it. I was stopped cold. Did I know how to kinda work around it in Photoshop? Yeah I guess but why? I cannot achieve the quality of image enhancement. Not to sound like a commercial but if anyone form Niksoftware is listening thank you. Thank you for every image I have created in the past 13 years.

This is the image that I was stopped until late last night. This image was captured by a Nikon D800camera. 70-200 f4 Nano coated VR II lens in the Nikon Electronic Image File Formant (.NEF) file was post processed using Capture NX2 Photoshop CS6, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efexpro.

I shot this image of James P. Abbott, esq. during my Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Infrared Workshop. This is the image I worked on with the entire class doing the same file part of day two: post processing an infrared file. Well I did say the class get's thrown into the pixel ocean and will swim to the finished image shore. I can smell the smoke of burning brain matter. Welll.... THEY did ask for this....

Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The camera used was a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared. The Lens used here was a Nikkor 24-120mm.

This image is from the NYC leg of the shoot. I shot this wAsking to the 79thstreet subway on my way to B&H. I am a sucker for flowers. I loved th way th followers and the celophane interplayed with the tack sharp crystal clear focus focus against a creamyness of bokeh is something I fell in love with every time I clicked the shutter.

Talk about W. Eugene Smith being right when he said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me

Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

To see in color is a delight for the eye but to see in black and white is a delight for the soul

– Andri Cauldwell

We we just see with our eyes we see everything, everywhere all at once. When I look through the lens I see the world in isolation one part at a time and I see it at the speed life while writing with light and taken by it one fraction of a second moment at a time.

This image was captured with the Nikon Zf and the 28-75mm f2.8 Nikkor. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This is from the week after my students went back to the US. This time I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5. If Dominoes is the national pastime, boxing is the national religion of Cuba. (or drinking rum depends on who you ask.) I had the chance to spend a few hours in a local gym where several of the Cuban Olympic team train.
