This image was shot in Havana. I only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.
The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 24-120mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.
This image was captured with my Nikkor 80-400mm and my modified D800 infrared camera.
Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

Third post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country.
What I wanted to do was celebrate the shoot using the tech of today. Soooooo you will be seeing a lot of images from the shoot we did on the deck of my studio.
I am a big believer in getting it as close to completely right in the camera as reality allows. What I was able to do with the combo of the sunbounce cage and hive lights was magic. We shot video during the shoot to discuss how to do

Light is the jewel of the photograph and the subject should be approached as if it is interrupting the beautiful light. Light should be thought of and approached as it is aas tangible a thing as the subject itself. But dark us just as important to an image as light and should be treated with the same care and respect as one treats light.
I love photographing Cuba. I love the physicality of the their expression. This image is of the balirino Marco Hinder Vincent. Light moves an inch every two minutes and this is the light reflecting off a 4th floor balcony glass French door that moments later the dweller of the apartment closed. Ya take what ya get and are thankful of the gift.

This is the second image from my latest trip to Cuba. WHAT A BLAST that was. I shot this image withe new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 Plena lens. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot.

I was at the tobacco plantation that grows the tobacco for Cohiba Silo VI cigars. The plantation is about an hour outside of Pinar del Río. It was a particularly bright day. Light picts up the color of the surface that it is reflecting off of. This field hand had just come in on a tractor with a trailer walked to a bench took his hat off and sat down to get into some shade. Armed with my 28-300mm I was able to A) frame him from where I was at, B) capture a spontaneous moment as it was happening and C) light him in a shade because the taboo curing shed which is painted wheat to reflect the light off the building to keep it cool was now the giant light source. This allowed me to photograph the road map of this man’s life etched in the wrinkles of his face.

I shot this image on my way to Moab traveling the back way to Jackson Hole. This is one of those images where the guardian angle that is tasked with photographers intervened. As we we (Paul Van Allen & I) were pulling out of West Yellowstone, there was no fog and just a whole lot of nothing. As we are driving up a slight rise just after we enter the park I say to Paul we really need some fog. As we crest the hill, BOOM we drive into a wall of fog. But absolutely a white out.... Then I say to Paul we really could use a little less fog and some buffalo.... BAM I turn right an there were three buffalo. Two days prior Paul agreed to drive back with us the 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR to Los Angeles.... KaBOOM I now have enough glass length.

This was shot on the last day of "rising" before the "shine" at 3am to catch the light with my Palm beach Photographic Centre's workshop with the Buffalo Bill Center in Cody Wyoming. We had just finished breakfast at the Lake Inn and were heading back to Cody.

I have a very good friend, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer who was a member of Combat camera, Mickey Strand, he would teach his sailors about the need to do "picture stories" it is a habit of his I have picked up. This is a "picture story" of a boy and his ballon.
This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."
The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 105mm f 1,4 lens. To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.
For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject
My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.
When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.
I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.
There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.
So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.
Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.
NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

From my latest trip to Cuba…..
Another As I turned to direct “traffic” so to speak I saw the moment in the last gasp of the light. Light is and shall always be the jewel of the photograph photograph.
The light was moving fast and the setting sun was moving faster. The light ws coming jut over that gof a building reflecting of a car window. So available light and I had to move at the speed of light whilst juggling several balls to move the dancers and the people with me into position. I use auto ISO, facial recognition follow focus, auto exposure and good glass. My job is to know how everything works and to know when to offload the heavy lifting of the elements of =focus and exposure to the camera so I can do my job which is connecting to the things infant of me. The secret photography is to alway make sure you are always standing in front odf interesting stuff.

The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 lens Plena. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

So one of the big reasons I'm building a new studio is because I'm re-opening my Natural Light headshot biz in Hollywood. What can I say I miss it. Actually truth be told as much as I bitched about it, I really enjoy photographing and working with actors. (I'm a conservatory trained actor myself). I just got these images back from the internationally renowned retouching expert, Lee Varis, who's agreed to do the retouching for me once the damn studio is finished. This image was shot as part of my Palm Beach Photographic workshop. No batteries or strobes were harmed during the course of the shoot. Lighting was done with a thermonuclear device, a Nikon D4 and a 70-200mm VR II f4.5 les shot on 128 gig Lexar Compact flash at 1000iso.

This was shot at 6:30am in the Chinese market in Yangon. It was 89 degrees at 6:30am. So there was a bit of a chill in the air for Yangon. I am loving having a D800 converted to IR. I am on this trip with a D4, two D800's a D600 and a V-1. I look like a Borg.

I only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.
The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 24-120mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.
This image was captured with my Nikkor 80-400mm and my modified D800 infrared camera.
Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

This is an image I took of Tim Dekay.
(From the cleaning out my long term storage facility big ass box of slides I hauled to the studio series.) This image was originally shot on Fuji Film, Nikon F5 70-210mm D Series lens. Lit with a Westcott Sunlight reflector (my light modifier of choice) and a Westcott Skcrimjim diffuser I thing it was 2 stops of diffusion). The big observation is the lack of color I have in comparison to today's digital camera and the lack of sharpness film had (using the same lens then as I do today) compared to digital. Also old chromes (AKA: Slides) attract everything except women. Removing all of the dust even from slides sealed in sleeves is a good 30-40 minutes.
Again this was done with my old Nikon PB-6 Bellows (I was going to play with it for Marco and I still had the slide copier.) a Nikon D810, a Nikkor 60mm Nano Macro lens to itand use my new Westcott daylight balanced flex light.

From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This is from the week after my students went back to the US. This time I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5. I call this image "BooBoo Cuba Dog in a cardboard box"
So you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source? Now you know.
Because of the D5- I AM: A Super Hero.
There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark you just have to image the word "light" to provide illumination. Spot on color, no noise at high ISO, touch screen focus in live view. Whoa.....

The best moments to photographs are the unseen moments that choose to hide inside the camera. If on can become still enough, the camera becomes the stillest branch in which the hummingbird of human spirit can land on to rest.
Cannot say the enough- A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject of the picture is not in motion.

Of the things I have done in my life that I am most proud of is my experiences with Navy Combat Camera and being an instructor. One of the best photographic lessons I have ever learned I learned there, from a Chief Petty Officer Mickey Strand. He certainly gives "salty" a new meaning. The lesson I learned from him was the concept of the picture story. Which I alway hope to do everytime I shoot. That idea is each picture in the story should be able to stand on it's own but when combinded the sum is greater than the parts.
This is the 3rd image, that is a part of a picture story, at I shot during my most recent Palmbeach Photographic Center Cuba workshop. Just walking the streets of Havana.

This is an infra red portrait of the Burmese dissident Ko Ko Gyi. He and another dissident, Min Ko Naing were the two people most responsible for convincing Aung San Suu Kyi to become the leader of the National League for Democracy. He spent almost 20 years in prison for his beliefs.
