This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D500. The lens was 18-300mm "Street Sweeper II" lens. To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

I got to sit in James Bond's Aston Martin, ride the monorail and. have the greatest invention of all the Belgian Waffle with whipped cream and fresh strawberries.

In the process of doing a little external hard drive clean-up and spring cleaning . ( My rental storage space looks like an old tech show room) I came a cross this file of one of my most favorite people in the world to photograph, Challen Cates. This image was captured with a D1X in in 10MP mode, 50mm at f7.1.

Don't ask me how I got there with is one, this file from the "I know everything in the world, I'll never need to save any work files" era. Sooooo other than Nikon Capture, Photoshop and Nik software were somehow involved.

So I am organizing my studio (the never ending quest...) and I came across one of my old working headshot portfolios from way back in the day when there was some art involved vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo and a yearbook picture. I have found in Cuba if you wait long enough on a corner all the old cars will arrive. I shot this with the Nikon D750 camera using the "the street sweeper" 28-300mm VR II Lens. I only brought the D750, D800 IR camera and three lenses.The D750 was such a dream to shoot I almost forgot I had the IR camera. ISO 500 which is the new 50 ISO. ISO 1000 is the new 100 and ISO 4000 is the new 400. Just walking the streets in Havana.

I shot this image back in the day..... Coolpix 950 serial number 00001. It is amazing what you find during "Clean up the server when you have a moment" (which is whenever you can find a moment that no one is screaming at at you) I saw this kid just covered in Grape jelly after he basically emptied the jar of it while his mother was dealing with her other two children at the base of Yosemite Falls. Her husband was out and about shooting with his fancy camera and tripod and this poor photo widow was getting ready for a "family" picnic. Said child is in sugar coma shock. This is the moment before sugar spool up, sugar rush launch and then sugar rush crash.

This image is of the ballerinas Kamila Quinones Ruiz and Lilia Laura Martinez Hernadez. It is a moment between moments during gearing up for the next set-up. The light had decided to go elsewhere. As I turned to direct “traffic” so to speak I saw the moment in the last gasp of the light. Light is and shall always be the jewel of the photograph.

The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 lens Plena. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

Another on the way to getting gas, actually on the way back from getting gas... (at my age it seems to be easier every day to get gas)

A Cyber-Digital Infrared image, NO TECHNOLOGY WAS HARMED!!! Sooo.... that means it was not taken with a D800 modified to shoot IR with a 70-200 f4.5 VRII lens. Nor was a 128GB Lexar flash card used and absolutely no post processing with Capture NX 2 then Photoshop CC and Nik Colorefex and Silver Efex Pro software. I simply used two pieces of red tape over my eyes and then with my will etched the pixels on to Facebook.

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

Hearing what I see then seeing it a photograph I get to rehear what I saw. For me Jazz is the poetry of music. Lenses are the poetry of optical physics. Bokeh is an umami for the eys.

WHAT A BLAST this last workshop was.

This image was captured with the Nikon Zf and the 28-75 f2.8 Nikkor. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

Post Cards from the vacation that is my life. the "I have been some remote placeless but....... " sectionThis is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

I am frequently asked "how do you get away with getting so close to people?" and "How do you get people to ope up to you? Do you speak the language?" My language skills are akin to someone saying they are a musician because the instrument they play is the stereo. I n other words I barely speak English. That said I do do speak fluent silly. The ability to play and the willingness to make a complete fool of myself in public has served my photography career well.

For every action there is a reaction... and fro every action to every action there is a reaction to that reaction.... There comes a point where you tart to follow the follower and each of you leads and each of you follows at the same time. This is his side of us laughing with each other.

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path. This a warrior form Kyal Yar village

This is from my most recent trip to Cuba shooting for my "Turning the Last Page: of 1962" book project. I am working on three books in this series Cuba, Burma and India. The joy of ice cream on a hot day is universal. This image was taken whilst walking back form my favorite watering hole. Again as always it is an absolute joy to be shooing in Cuba and shooting in Cuba with the D850. The lens was the Nano Crystal coated 24-120mm

the imaging pathway is as follows: Lightroom Classic was used as the browser to make selects, then using the open directly plugin for Lightroom the selected file was sent to Nikon Capture NX-D for raw conversion saved as a 16bit tiff in the Prophoto Colorspace. File was then post processed in Photoshop 2018 and the Nik Collection by DxO was used in conjunction with Photoshop to image edit this image.

I shot this image of James P. Abbott, esq. during my Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Infrared Workshop. This is the image I worked on as the demonstration part of post processing an infrared file. Tommorow the class get's thrown into the pixel ocean and will swim to the finished image shore. Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The camera used was a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.The Lens used here was a Nikkor 24-120mm. Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

This is of the actress Faith Salie. At the beginning of my "Hollywood Headshot" career I came hours foreclosing the doors to my studio because I could not pay the rent. I was a natural light studio and we had the first El Ninio floods that shut me down for basically 4 months. I had just graduated USC, and I dreamed of just being broke. I was about to be homeless as well as studio-less. Faith loaned me the money to keep it open. Were it not for her I would be on a street corner with a Quizno's cup asking for spare change.

I shot this with a Nikon N90s a Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso. Scanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.

captured this image on the first morning of my three day Varanasi workshop put on by the Indian talent pooling website tumbhi.com. I was walking in the streets heading towards the river Ganges. I came across this holy man, he was happy to see me! So we shared some Chai and he blessed me. So I have that going for me.... Which is nice.

The image was captured by a Nikon D-800, camera modified for infrared. Super Enhanced color conversion done by LifePixel with a 70-200 mm Nano f4 coated VR II lens at 400iso using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 32 gigabyte 1000 speed UDMA Flash media. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efex Pro 2.0.

Don't get me wrong, the obvious you can see them coming from five blocks a way tourist scams no the world over.... sure, comes with the territory. I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. I shot this image 4;30am Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens. This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book series titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 28-300mm "streetsweeper" To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

I shot this image wit a D600.. It was first thing in the morning, this was the first face I saw as we walked out of the hotel in Trinidad.

This image was captured with a D600 1000 ISO 28-300mm VRII zoom in the NEF file format on a 64GB lexar smart media. Post processed in Capture NX2 and Photoshop CC using Nik Color Efex 4.0.

This is my latest workshop to Cuba.. I shot this image withe new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 lens Plena. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

I shot this image during my March 2015 Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba. This image was shot in Havana. Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 80-400mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 24-120mm and my modified D800 infrared camera.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

This image was captured in a cave monastery in the Kayin state of Burma. This is one of those rare images where you have more in the image that you realize. I was lucky enough to come upon a young monk praying. I have never seen lens flare occur like this in an image work so well.

The image was captured by a Nikon D-800 camera modified for infrared. Super Enhanced color conversion with a 24-120 mm Nano coated VR II lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efex Pro 2.0.

This is a shot of Ed Asner during a Voice Over recording session for the movie "Framed". He's a total hoot. But here is the amazing thing is this shot. I was in the sound control room, not in the recording room. I had to shoot between two panes of glass, the light source was a music stand lamp @ 12800iso with the 28-300mm lens shot with the D5. Hell of a technological achievement.

So you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source? Now you know.

Because of the D5- I AM: A Super Hero.

There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark you just have to image the word "light" to provide illumination. Spot on color, no noise at high ISO, touch screen focus in live view. Whoa.....

What I hate is when you relearn lessions the you learned the Christ was a corporal but somehow forgot on the day of the shoot. I know that you should shoot moving dances at least 1000 of a second. Let's leave it go at that. Hence why I have sooo many "portraits".... sigh....

This is the dancer Christian Parra La Frargue.

Yup I bit the bullet and modified a Z9 for infrared. I did a full spectrum conversion and then am using the bayonet filters from Kolarivision. Which means I can have my cake and eat it too. THe first element of the lens dictates everything that is going to happen from the quality of the light and resolution of thar light. So putting the IR filter at the end of the light path is far better than putting a filter in front of the lens. a full spectrum conversion allows me to bring my camera back to visible spectrum with a different filter as well as having every flavor of IR....coool....

There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant. You can truly create a place when the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera.

There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.

Shot with the AMAZING Z9. The Z9 is more camera than I am photographer.

Shot this on my way from the Ahwanee on my way to get gas out of the Yosemite Valley riding my 1964 R69s BMW motorcycle to take pictures for my next book project, a book on infrared technique. I just want everyone to know I know exactly how tough my job is. Peeling the tape off of my eyes was a real pain.

Digital Infrared image, NO TECHNOLOGY WAS HARMED!!! Soo that means it was not taken with a D800 modified to shoot IR with a 70-200 f4.5 VRII lens. Nor was a 128GB Lexar flash card used and absolutely no post processing with Capture NX 2 then Photoshop CC and Nik Colorefex and Silver Efex Pro software. I simply used two pieces of red tape over my eyes and then with my will etched the pixels on to Facebook.

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

I shot this image today in Cozumel on my Vanelli&Friends cruise as the guest instructor. I captured this with the D7200 and my go to lens the 28-300mm AKA "The Street Sweeper" lens. Just walking down the streets you are always blessed to find a moment to capture at the speed of life. It was the pants choice that caught my eye, then the maginification sticker on the pair of "cheaters"/

I am impressed with the speed of the this camera's frame rate and the weight. Not to mention the quality of the image and the extraordinary sharpness of the lens.

Back in the day it was to get bowl of noodles at Sam Wo's, before the health department had enough with the place... This image was captured on my way to the Chinese Doctor that I have been going to since I was 22 years old. Sometimes somethings and some places can become paused in time. AND sometimes in some places you can photograph a glimpse of that timelessness.

One of the things the dress rehearsal for the Zombie Apocalypse has afforded me is time. This is from a Figure photoshoot/workshop I did in Florida a few years back during Fotofusion at the Palmbeach Photographic Centre, with my the brand new just converted to shoot infrared Z7. This is with the 24-120mm and the FTZ kit lens. Which is a hell of a piece of glass. I say this a lot, you don't take pictures they take you. I was just looking through the camera lens marveling at how cool it was to actually see in real time what my IR images were going to look like, Jack Davis (my co-instructor) was setting up a shot and talking about it. The model he wasn't using was just playing with the water of the pool with her foot daydreaming. next thing I know I saw this and the camera went click. Or not- I was in silent shooting mode. I did not disrupt her daydream and I got the idea for doing conversational portraits.

I shot this image during my March 2015 Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba. This image was shot in Havana. Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 80-400mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 24-120mm and my modified D800 infrared camera.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

This image was shot "street walking" in Trinidad it was shot with the AMAZING Nikon D750 camera using the "the street sweeper" 28-300mm VR II Lens. I only brought the D750 and the D800 IR camera and three lenses. The D750 was such a dream to shoot I almost forgot I had the IR camera. ISO 1000 which is the new 100 ISO. Yup.... just walking the streets in Trinidad.

And now for something completely different….. This is John Brunold. One of this greatest grips in Hollywood. Forgot more about lighting than I know. Knows more about lighting than most gaffers. He is the brains behind figuring out the madness of the way my shooting deck works. He was over last night to indulge in an adult beverage. I had the light turned on of my underlip green onyx bar/countertop (I know fancy) I looked up the Zf with the Plena was sitting on the kitchen counter I quickly put the camera in BW mode.

This is 16000iso, in camera Black and White, raw processed using Studio NX and control points. Image sized in Photoshop.

The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 lens Plena. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

This image was taken at a Powwow on the day before the of "rising" before the "shine" at 3am to catch the light with my Palm beach Photographic Centre's workshop with the Buffalo Bill Center in Cody Wyoming.

The are the hands of the last living War Chief to the Crow tribe, Joe Medicine Crow. He is 101 years old.

D800 modified to shoot IR by Lifepixel.com with a 80-400mm Nano f4.5 VRII lens. The PRPRPR realization was recorded to a 128GB Lexar flash card post processing with Capture NX 2 then Photoshop CC and Nik Colorefex and Silver Efex Pro software.

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)
