Even after living in Maine for 64 years, (he moved here when he was 7) he is still "from away" This ismage was captured with a D5, 28-300mm "street Sweeper" lens. So yesterday I spent the day organizing 180TB of drive. Sorting through the 16TB of Myanmar images. Looking at the 2_DO folder.

there web two images, shot moments apart. I always wonder why makes on 1/125sec more decisive than the previous 124 fractions of a second. When did the one second begin, really or did it end?

The stage picture is exactly the same, the story told is so different. All in less than a half second.

I truly do fall in love a thousand times a day. Generally for 1/125 of a second. I do not believe in long exposures or long relationships.

From a kinder gentler time. I look forward to the day I can be taking like this again.

One of the greatest lessons I have ever learned was from Prof. Tad Z. Danielewski. Proffer Danielewski was considered to be one of the greatest acting teacher of all time. A man who, though I did not fully realize it at the time, was one of the greatest gifts the universe has provided me. The lesson was on how to hide in the camera. Over the years I have learned through a lot of trial and error, some efforts more successful than others, of to translate it from doing it to being able to photograph where people hide.

I am in the process of bringing my studio back on line and reprinting all of the images that were damaged in the monsoons. I created this image from a scan of a contact sheet and images of the Cuban ballet dancer Grettell Lastre Casuso. These dreams are the moments where she sees me but does not register I am photographing until the last capture. about a 3 second time frame.

It appears that 2023 is, for me, the year of infrastructure. I have have had to readdress the water issues of my studio, which now appear to be able to withstand floods of biblical proportions. I have lost because of the epic flow of water a lot of “stuff” I had been putting off ridding myself of because…who knows. One of the things I am doing as the sheets of water pelt the state of California is up dating my NAS drives. I will have 256TB storage when this is all done. So rather than just move my pile of crap to a bigger container, as I transfer I am doing the digital dumpster dive to see what I have.

This image is one of those finds. I found it In the 2_DO folder of my 20123 trip to India. One of the coolest gigs I have ever done. I was asked to travel the country for two weeks with 12 Indians to show them how someone who is not from there sees there. What a blast we both had, me watching them see a world they walk by everyday for the first time and my group showing me what Indian culture and food was all about.

This image was from my first day in Mumbai at the festival for Genesh. Loud, colorful framed with people throwing brightly colored powder at each other and most importantly happy.

This is an image from my last trip to Cuba. This is an image of the dancer Indira. It is a joy to work with Cuban dancers.

One of the things I love about working with dancers is the complete connection between mind body and emotion. They move what they feel. It was a very gray day, threatening to rain. So the light was perfect widow light. I have developed the habit of shooing the Z9 in silent form working of film sets. This is an extremely powerful tool because the shutter click gives up the most that the camera has taken a picture. Without that click, that simple little sound, the subject frequently forgets that there is a camera taking a picture.

Sooo..... From my "Flowers Don't Talk Back" series

Whilst I have been teach for Maine Media Workshops last week with my co-conspiritor Mickey Strand, I have been working on our next class Backyad Fine Rt: IT is a small World After All. A class I have been threatening to do for the past 6 years.

What makes it a much more viable class is something that cameras now have the ability to automate- focus stacking. In the Nikon world it is referred to as "Focus Shift" you can set the camera up to to doubt 300 shots or "slices" of focus.

An unforeseen benefit is you can also do multiple aperture images. Like f2.8, f8 and f 16. What I have been working on is to come up with a set of best practices and considerations to avoid image face planting.

Next round will be with the new NX Studio downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/564/NX_Studio..... I am hoping that this floor to ceiling upgrade will make the process even faster and easier.

This from my last trip in December to Portugal. Talk about a dining room with a view. This image was captured from the second time I dined here. The restaurant is named Casa de cha da Boa Nova. I can say with absolute certainty that this was the finest meal and dining experience I have ever had in my life. The first I ate there it was at night and all I had was a view of absolutely blackness. The Restrant has three prix fixe venues, 6, 11 and 21 courses and two wine flights 6 and 11. I thought the 21 course was too much the 6 too small and the 11 well ok. After the 3rd course I made a reservation for lunch and the 21 courses and the 11 wine flight.

Somewhere in the middle of the meal I took this photograph. It was one of those time I was grateful for image stabilization, auto focus and matrix metering.

I was on assignment for American Photo magazine (back when magazines existed...) This is in a region in Burma that non Burmese (and even then it is strictly limited) can no longer travel to.

This is the second shot of the sequence after she gave me the "scary laser stare of death by a tattooed faced woman" stare. You know the one where she looks right through me.

See explaining story below:

There is an old wives tale that the most beautiful women in South east Asia are from Burma specifically from the village I photographed this woman in. So hard core was this belief back in the day that the men of the village took to tattooing the faces of the women so no one would want to steal them. This was done with bamboo needle and ink at 13 years old with out any for of local anesthetic.

To get to this village this village we travelled 11 hours by car one one of the "Burma Super Highways" three hours by boat then 6 hours by car then 7 hour day boat during the monsoon season up the Irrawaddy river. Along the way we had to bail the boat out and head to shot when it dumped rain or we would sink ( this is also where I proved that a Nikon camera can indeed be pelted with 1.7 liters of water per hour....). All I know is that when we FINALLY arrived sat this village I was hell bent on photographing a tattooed face woman. I entered the village and it was completely empty. Only chickens and pigs running around.

As my angst, frustration and concern started to simmer to a boil of "@&$*%(!!" level expletives, I hear, flowing in the air around me, the is beautiful bell/bird song like voice in the most exquisite mix of births and brumes accented English say "Are you looking for me?" I spin around and all there is an empty village. the again I hear flowing in the air around me, the most beautiful voice " I cannot come down because I mail but you may photograph me if you would like to."

I would like to believe that my mother did not have any idiot children I said to my self "look up" and there above me had to be one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. Stopped me dead in my tracks. Also keep in mind that the last white man to visit this village must have been during the British occupation. I eventually found my voice and said "yes I traveled here to photograph you" (I had no idea that I had travel here just to photograph this woman but it was as if she was notified via psychic link or carrier pigeon that I was on my way and on "official" American Photographer magazine business. She smiled, giggled a bit, I then lifted up my camera she made this face.

For me Light is ts the jewel of the photograph.

Most people belive that light is the fast thing in the universe. But it has always amazed met that if it is so fast whay is dark always there before it arrives?

When I look through my camera I aproach light as if it is a solid object. I believe that the subject interrupts my beautiful light.

There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.

This from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path.

These are warrior babies form Kyal Yar village. They capture heart with terminal cuteness.

This is image was used for the Japanese translation of my third book "From Oz to Kansas". The master file was corrupted so I had o go back and rework it. Sooo here is the new and improved not corrupted version. When working on my last project for Epson when the head design and printer driver engineers came over from Japan they had a copy Oz 2 Kansas, with notes and questions and post it tabs. I have that book in my studio, It's cool to know that some of my chromatic grayscale conversion theory influenced a decision or two.

Something I just do, or I should say I do now and for a long time now, is when I am in the field I always take a picture out the window of where I am staying. It's something my mentor, Jay Maisel alays does when he travels. I thought at the time "well why not" and for a long time felt a little silly doing it for doing it's sake. Then As I got my head out of my butt about it I really started to see the world. When I didn't do it I'd spend the day thinking about what I saw and thought I'l be sure to do it tommorw but the image never came back and all I had of the prior morning was a cyberchrome.

So this is a shot on the first day out my window playing with all my new toys in Cuba befor my first cup of coffee. I have seen this view over the course of 15 years and I am amazed that the image shows up everytime and I was simi-conscious enough to let it take me.

There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant. You can truly create a place when the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera.

There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.

I generally walk between 10-15miles aday when I am shooting on location.

I bit the bullet and modified a Z9 for infrared. I did a full spectrum conversion and then am using the bayonet filters from Kolarivision. Which means I can have my cake and eat it too. THe first element of the lens dictates everything that is going to happen from the quality of the light and resolution of thar light. So putting the IR filter at the end of the light path is far better than putting a filter in front of the lens. a full spectrum conversion allows me to bring my camera back to visible spectrum with a different filter as well as having every flavor of IR....coool....

This is from my latest trip to Cuba. I admit it I am a cat lady. I shot this with thew 50mm 1.8 S series lens. A lens that truly blew me away. To be honest I have alway viewed a 50mm lens as an optical lens cap. I have learned the error of my ways. This is a breathtaking star lens with beautiful bokeh.

How I spent my weekend. Crawling oa a concrete floor photographing Heirloom tomatoes. Some guys go to a strip club to squeeze tomatoes. Me I go to a farmers Market.

Another image that I have look at over the course of many years and said to myself "You should shoot that" and I have shot it. many, many, many, many, many times. Now I'm happy with it. The sign has been abandand since 1962. There is no bar or resataurant there since 1962. But there it is the sign attached to a building no on lives in.

This image "If I were a Raindrop" and "Paris in Snow" are probably my most iconic images. I shot this image during my San Francisco Presidio project. I had been cooped up during two week rainstorm. This was the firs moment of not raining. I literally tripped over a tree root and shot this whist falling into the mud.

I thought that the raw file for this image was lost to me for forever.... Had a hard drive go tits up, back before I knew about backing everything up and back before I could afford a lotta hard rives. I came across it being misfiled in another image's folder whilst going through my file spring cleaning of my 48TB server. Trust me it is a mind numbing eye crossing endeavor. I have always wanted to redo this image. Bu all I ever had was on copy of it as a flattened tif done with the knowledge base of 18 years ago (back when I knew considerably more than I now know I know today) The reason I am beside myself reliving the glory days of yore is Epson Legacy Etching paper and the P9000's new inset. The problem is the file I had was unprintable because of the quality of the paper and printer head and gamut of the ink. I simply did not have enough data. I spent three days on this file from RAW to final print file to get it the way I have always believed it should truly look. It will replace the one I currently have (44x36) hanging over my bed in my bedroom. The colors I was able to pull from the file using picture control in NXD as well as having a much better understanding of how things work.... I would recommend that every one revisit some of the old chestnuts of one's career and take the file out for a spin

This from my most recent trip to Myanmar. Soooo.... I m now back in Yangon after my journey to the outskirts of the absolute middle of nowhere.

So about this image- I have a hardfast rule.... I NEVER GIVE MONEY TO ANYONE. The reason is, to do this, as was I was told early on by one of my "fixers" is that by doing this all you do is to help create a society of beggars.

So give food, give shampoo, give soap, give paper, give pencils, give toothbrush yes. Cash? Nope (unless it's to a school then absolutely) My only exception is when I cross paths with a Buddhist Monk or Nun, Their journey is one of prayer and living off the kindness of strangers. Got no problem with that. So I gave these baby nuns (maybe 5000 Kyat. (about 3 dollars US) They didn't believe how much wealth they had to give the nunnery.

I am in Cuba (again) this time with the Nikon D5.

i call tis image "Yellow" I shot it from a moving car as my car was excelrating and passing it.

So so if you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source and why I am in love with the D5 now you know.

There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. To stop a speeding car with a single click while moving in a mother speeding car..... Whoa..... Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.

The Z system is simply best of class. The quality of the file and the perfection of the color coupled with the new lenses sharpness, just a joy to shoot. Enough with the commercial...

I have walked down this street over the past 10 years, I average 10 to 12 miles day (thank god for the healthcares program on my iPhone I suppose) I look up and around

then I was taken.

I try to create images that put the viewer in the same place the moment I was taken by the moment.

An interesting plainness, which is the most difficult thing to achieve.

I shot this image on my second day of my February 2015 Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba in Havana. (There are two spots left for my March 21-29 workshop. www.workshop.org/travel.php) I only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 24-120mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper) my go to lens with my go to camera.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

I love photographing dancers, especially Cuban Ballet Dancers.This is from my latest trip to Cuba. We were on our way back from shooting dancers leaping in the street and the lights was right, the background screamed 105mm f 1.4 and the lovely MariKarla Laguna was hanging out in the shade. It amazes me what passing clouds can do tho change the light.

This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path. This a warrior form Kyal Yar village

i shot this with the Nikon Z7ii the 105mm f1.4 using the FTZ adaptor. I used the Focius Shift funtionaliity to shoot one set of images at f 1.4 and then a second set at f 14. I post processed both sets twice in capture NXD one at N exposure and then again at N- (2/3 stop) under. Vivid as the Picture cintrol setting in NX-D. Both times using 32 images which I assembled in Heicon Focus then did the final aesthetic editing in Photoshop using NiKcollection by DxO plugins.

This image was shot during my Palm Beach Photographic Workshop in Burma with the D600 100iso. This the view out my hotel window.

This image was captured by a Nikon D600camera. 24-120 Nano coated VR II lens in the Nikon Electronic Image File Formant (.NEF) Shot on Lexar 32 gigabyte 1000 speed UDMA Flash media 4000 iso. file was post processed using Capture NX2 Photoshop CS6, Nik Color Efex 4.0.

Final file is stored and scaled using Genuine Fractals.

This is an image from a prototype Z7 using Focus Shift capture (65 images.) Shot RAW+JPEG Fine Adobe RGB . File type for this experiment was jpeg, Lens was the 60mm Macro using the FTZ coupler.

Image stacking was done with Helicon Focus, type C render. Resized and color space converted to sRGB in Photoshop CC 2018. No other post processing magic. So this is color out of the camera.
