This is another image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book series titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D810. The lens was 105mm f 1.4. Arguably the best lens Nikon has ever made. Certainly the best lens I have ever shot with.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects by a make-up stylist, in this case just the make-up the dancer chose to put on herself, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontaneous none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject.

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.

This is an image of the Cuban Ballerina Klavdia. In this image, just like the previous one of the Elena , Klavdia was resting in a small window frame and I was out side on the even smaller balcony shooting towards her, in between rain showers.

The light source was ambient rainy daylight.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

Art is just a series of natural gestures. For God’s sake, don’t try to be artistic-all wild animals walk the same way

—John Marin

From my three weeks in Namibia—

What I like about this images and the others that will be part of this “picture story” is the flow of gestures. I am just a witness of moments of time that would have occurred regardless of me being there or not and how all the elements of the image conspired unknowingly. I was an invisible inertial observer to the ballet of the moment.

I shot the second image of this picture story with the 590nm magnetic filter. 24-120mm S Nikkor lens. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

This from my most recent trip to Myanmar. Soooo.... I shot this in Yangon just before r my journey to the outskirts of the absolute middle of nowhere. I have a series of exercises I run myself through before I enter "the hair ball" of a week long + street photography assignment. I do them to blow the rust out of the pipes so to speak. This is part of my defined area exercise. I pick four corners in a given space and then see how many usable images I can shoot in that area in a set period of time.

I am[laying with something new in Nikon’s Studio NX, Flexible color picture control (FCPC). SO we are clear if you are a Nikon shooter and you are not processing your raw files in NX Studio you are truly doing your images a disservice. !00% of all of my images are converted from the .NEF file format to tiTiff in Nikon software since the inception of Nikon Capture. That is going all the way back to the first Nikon DSLR the D1.

I am working on creating FCPC settings that replicate great BW films from back in the day. This image was post processed with control points and an FCPC that I created to emulate 125iso film made by a USA film manufacturer.

In the instant that I shared between the leopard seeing me and me seeing the leopard is the moment that we both saw each other and the connection between us took the image. I remember this moment with absolute clarity. I do not however remember the day in and exact sense. I just remember the blur of it to get me to the moment of clarity.

In my work I am in the practice of practicing. Practice does not make perfect, a perfect practice makes perfect. Which is why I always am practicing at practicing. With the pursuit of attaining the Zen state of Shibumi- effortless perfection and elegance. A state of doing that is thoughtful thoughtless thought. Practice like you have never won and preform like you have never lost.

I was taken by this image, as is true with all my images, as I was walking to a a performance rehearsal of the next ballet to be staged by the National Cuban Ballet. I this this empty practice room the space was filled with the ballerina. Her focus was so strong I felt it as I walked by and had to step back and let her take me to where she was.

Every issue of an image needs to be solved at moment of capture. I realized that the image of her needed to be in a space big enough to show how she filed it. So I took a second shot that showed the the left side of the rehearsal room. I don’t believe in cropping images. I shoot 99% of my images full frame.

When ever I have a moment between deadlines I rummage through the the 2 do drive. It’s full of almost pictures and images that at the tie I knew there was something there I just did not possess the “something” needed at the time to get it there.

This image is one of those. I shot this image 10 years ago with a D750 and the 28-300mm AKA the “street sweeper” lens.

I found the files in a folder named “PEACOCK” all the other folders had the standard naming/numbering convention I use. There is a children’s book about a peacock who finds himself living amongst a flock of pigeons. So I figured since coincidence is the universe’s attempt at remaining anonymous I should look inside. 3:47am I diminished the file and pulled a print.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I am forever chasing light. Light turns the ordinary into the magical.

– Trent Parke

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

For me light is the jewel of the photograph. A very wise photographer and one of my photographic heroes, Bob Krist, said “what would you rather shoot the Taj Mahal poorly lit of a line of laundry beautifully lit?” Jay Maisel once told me in one of our many walks about NYC “treat light as if it is a solid as the subject. Trat it as if the subject is interrupting your beautiful light.”

Which brings us the the ballerina Kamila Capote. It is sunset, It appeared that the sun had finally given all it was going to. Kamila had be jumping, twirling and leaping for two hours. She “sat” on the malice’s stone wall an just started to stretch. I was about to call it a day when a cloud broke open and a glorious beam of light shown and all the solid objects interrupted the beautiful light. Big lesson with natural light is it isn’t over until you need to turn on your cellphone light to see where you are going. Even if you are A.S.O. (All Shot Out) if there’s light then there is the possibility of capturing magic.

CATS!!!!!!! I LOVE CATS!!!!!!!! OK correction to the last post- I could make a career of photographing skies, sunsets and CATS!!!! And to get a cat basking in good light….. I treat light when I conceptualize an image as if it is as solid of an object as the subject that is interrupting my beautiful light. What more is there to the life of a photographer? I grew up in fog and I spend most of waking hours in a fog. SO when it comes to fog I know what I am talking about. I shot this on the way back from Yosemite to Los Angeles. There is the self we show the world and the self we hide from the world. The goal I find is to have the subject of your image choose to hide in the camera. When that happens we see the actual “who” of the person is, not the “what” of what they are they choose to show.

Astral or “night sky” photography has always been something I try to think of anything else to do before that. In North America there are too many obstacles, light pollution, traveling to really really isolated places and having to get up a 3am stabling around in the dark.

Then there is trying to get light (light painting) on the terrestrial part of the image.

All of those issues went away in Namibia. This image is two exposures. One of the sand dune at sunset and one right after the sun has set.

I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Tuning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”

I shot this with the Z6III 50mm S Nikkor f1.2. The dune at 1/5000 of a second at f1.8 ISO 200 and the star field at 10sec at f1.8 ISO 5000. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. I have no idea where this is, other than somewhere between here and there in Myanmar. The big issue, at least for me when on assignment is you stop producing "product" when the editor or art director says "we're good" there are always more images that are great but do not fit the direction of the story and there is just so many hours in a day, and when you get "it's a wrap" you are off to the next gig. It's nice to take pause and se what is there that you saw but did not "see" for the purpose of the story.. D3x and the 24-120mm lens. This is the image in Chromatic Grayscale.

This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

Image was post processed with Capture NXD, Photoshop CC 2017, Nik collection by Google and onOnesoftware. Converted with the Oz 2 Kansas BW conversion.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

I have a job that is more fun than fun. We pulled off to a village in the middle of the day because it was to hot to be out in a boat in the middle of the day and the animals were doing the smart thing, tapping in the shat in jungle. The village’s name translates to

The place of good teeth” I wrote that down because I could not figure out how to to spell the actual name. As I was bubbling around photographing a chicken clucking about with the chicken having nothing to about me try to photographer. As I looked up I saw this young girl and she saw me. It is the moment wy we both connected at that the pict her took itself. again back the discussion of the last post, for me the best photographs are the ones that feel as if we are in the space between a moment. Traveling to next but not there yet. Leaving the moment we were in yet not completely gone from it.

When I was a kid my father would tell me stories about being akid growing up in New York City. So everytime I go to NYC I always make it a point to find the echo of his memories still living in the city.

This is an image of the News Building that I shot through the glass on my one and only day. off (so far) from the Feature film shoot I am the Stills/Set photographer for, Pinball.

I shot this whilst spending the day with Jimmy AtoZ (my new associate photographer in my classes) and Aymen Siam, who I mentor as part of the NYSalt program. Jimmy is a NYC native and well took me to some of the echo of New York places I only occasionally stumble upon. "Light gesture and color are the key components of any photograph. Light and color are obvious but it is gesture that is the most important. There is gesture in everything, the key is to find the gesture that is the most telling"

This is an image of a 3 minutes before the "official" state of mourning was over and Cubans could drink and smoke. The bars were already full in anticipation.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book series titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 28-300mm "streetsweeper" To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

.

From My latest trip to Cuba

Every artist has an instrument. From the self-evident interments that musicians play, to painters who instrument is canvas, paint and brush and dancers who's instrument is their body.

All creativity comes from the same place. We just choose the metaphor and instrument we choose to express our momentary lapses from reason to express the moments we feel in a way other can experience the way we did.

The instrument a photographer has in the camera, the lens is its brush and the file created by the sensor is the canvas.

This a moment that took me photographing the dancer Maripaz Laguna being taken by the dance.

For those of us who believe in physics, the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion

– Albert Einstein

This image is from a trip to Cuba I took in December of 2016.

I am working on images for my solo show of my images of Cuba that will happen sometime end of this year beginning of next at the Museo National Bellas Artes in Havana Cuba (the National Museum of Fine Art) I have been going through all of the 500,000 give or take frames I have shot so far.

The concept behind this project is to photograph the echos of the past that are still present today. What makes Cuba unique, almost wholly unique, is the it is caught in a bubble of 1962. I have several ongoing projects to capture the echo of Myanmar, India, Paris and New York City. Of all of these projects Cuba and Myanmar are the most complete.

Light, gesture and color are the three key elements of any image, with gesture being the most important consideration. In addition to these three ememnts there is a fourth concept- time, specifically timelessness. A successful image is one where gesture is served but the “when” is not definable.

I shot this with the D500 NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. 20 plus year project is 1/400 of a second ISO 100. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

The shadow is the greatest teacher for how to come to the light.

— Ram Dass

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

Shadow is as important to an image as light. Because no mater how you slice it, (and yes I have said and will say this repeatedly) Light is the jewel of the photograph. What would you rather look at- the Taj Mahal poorly lit or a wall of a building on a street with peeling paint and a rusty chair beautifully lit?

Light should always be treated as if it is as solid as the subject of the photograph is. The subject should always be approached as if it is interrupting the beautiful light. Light should never be just an after thought. It is really the only thought.

I shot this with the 24-200 Nikkor lens f4-6.3. 1/250 of a second ISO 200. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection by DxO.

The drama of light exists not only in what is in the light, but also in what is left dark. If the light is everywhere, the drama is gone.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

There is no bad light. There is spectacular light and difficult light. It's up to you to use the light you have. You are responsible for every part of your image, even the parts you’re not interested in.The composition is already there, you just need to frame it

Photography is an act of love. When I shoot I fall in love thousands a time in a day. I do not believe in long exposures and and long relationships.

Always shoot it now. It won't be the same when you go back..

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

From my three weeks in Namibia—

There is a Hassidic saying “sorry is the rabbi who is not will to teach the lesson 101 times” I once asked my master acting teacher, Tad Z. Danielewsk about how he teaches. He said “I treat knowledge like a bucket of mud and students like brick walls. I sling the mud at the wall and what sticks, sticks and what doesn’t doesn’t . At the end of the day f class I collect the mud tat didn’t stick and start throwing it again the time we have class. All I ask is that you don’t dodge the mud.

What I have learned over the years teaching photography is you have to throw a lot of the same mud repeatedly. Why sticks sticks and eventually if you repeat yourself enough the moment of epiphany will eventually happen. Why I say this (I have said this a lot)-

I photograph my portraits as if they are landscapes and my landscapes as if they are portraits. Each form contains the important aspects needed for the other.

(I have said this a lot too-)\

Light, gesture, color are the key elements of every photograph. But when do you know that an image is meant to be a a black and white image? The answer is a lot simpler than the general song and dance you hear the pixel pundits put forth. When the cold gets in the way of the gesture. Then it is time to abstract out the color from the image so the gesture remains.

There is no bad light. There is spectacular light and difficult light. It's up to you to use the light you have. You are responsible for every part of your image, even the parts you’re not interested in.The composition is already there, you just need to frame it.

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!

—Audrey Hepburn

From my three weeks in Namibia—

Sunrise, last Moon set before the night of no moon and the last moments of the visor milky way.

I was up before sunrise in the Sossusvlei dessert to do a hot air balloon flight at sunrise. (PRO TIP: If there is a hot air balloon flight to do -do it.) When ever I do a balloon flight I dress accordingly. I also travel with a Tripod. Always. With the goal of the trip being able to say “well I never took it out”. But when you need a tripod you need a tripod. This is a composite of two images. With my eyre I could see the stars, the crescent moon and the circle of illumination of the arriving rising sun. The reality is I saws this. The technical reality is I could expose for the stars or I could expose for the impend

Ing sun rise an moon setting. But not both. I have always been of the belief that the is impossible is an opinion. And is generally the opinion held by the person saying it. Physics has limitations, in this case optical and sensor physics can shoot on event but not both in the same shot. Imagination however is limitless. Saint Francis of Assisi said “Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

The necessary- shoot two images on a tripod expose for the stars expose for the sunrise, the possible blend them in software and suddenly you have done the impossible.

You hear about how the River Ganges is the root of all things Hindu and Indian. If you live outside of India this statement, at least for me has been more of a literary event than a reality. But to witness this connection is truly spell binding.

There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant and has a frame rat faster than your nervous system can register.

You can truly create a place when and where the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera.

I shot this with my new Nikon Z6III the 85mm f 1.2 Nikkor lens. 1/2500 of a sec ISO 4000 Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection by DxO.

In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.

– Terry Pratchett

The hardest thing to cook is a scrambled egg. The hardest portrait to capture is a cat. They know before you do when you are going to press the shutter.

I am practicing for my conversational portrait class in a few weeks. I I can get a portrait of a cat…. Then I can take a portrait of anything.

Nature’s great masterpiece, an elephant – the only harmless great thing.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

When I shot that and was no more than 15 feet away I was thinking “top of the food chain my ass. Glad elephants are vegetarians.”

I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Turning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”

I shot this with the Z6III 100-400 S Nikkor with a 1.4 extender. T Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

The heart and mind are the true lens of the camera

From my three weeks in Namibia—

I am not a wildlife photographer. The closet thing I have ever shot that was a wild animal is my elusive Nibelung house cats Gianni and Valentino. I am a believer that you fallinlove a thousand times a day usually around 125 to 250th of a second. Not a big believer in long exposures or long relationships. But when the image takes you in that moment you fall in love with it.

Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.”

From my three weeks in Namibia—

Albert Einstein posited that we are initial observers time and of things around us. That no two people will observe, see or experience an event the same way based on our position to the event as it happens.

However no mater what or placement to an image all observers see the moment of a stilled moment of time, the photograph, exactly the same way.

One of the profound honors, and it is an honor, I have been allowed to experience with my camera is to be in places where people have never seen an image of themselves or for that matter are aware of the power of the light capturing light saber that I wield.

In a 10 day period I flew to SaltLake City, drove to Yellowstone, drove to Jackson Hole Wyoming, then to Moab then back to Salt Lake City then back to Moab then back to Salt lake City then flew to Los Angeles. I drove 2264 miles and spent 23 hours in a car. After that juggernaught I had a 21 hour turn around and flew to New York city for 7 days then back to Los Angeles (9 hour turn around and flew to Maine for a week.

This is image was capture during the first trip to Moab. It was a new moon, so the Milky Way was visible at 3:30am.
