From my three weeks in Namibia—

Sunrise, last Moon set before the night of no moon and the last moments of the visor milky way.

I was up before sunrise in the Sossusvlei dessert to do a hot air balloon flight at sunrise. (PRO TIP: If there is a hot air balloon flight to do -do it.) When ever I do a balloon flight I dress accordingly. I also travel with a Tripod. Always. With the goal of the trip being able to say “well I never took it out”. But when you need a tripod you need a tripod. This is a composite of two images. With my eyre I could see the stars, the crescent moon and the circle of illumination of the arriving rising sun. The reality is I saws this. The technical reality is I could expose for the stars or I could expose for the impend

Ing sun rise an moon setting. But not both. I have always been of the belief that the is impossible is an opinion. And is generally the opinion held by the person saying it. Physics has limitations, in this case optical and sensor physics can shoot on event but not both in the same shot. Imagination however is limitless. Saint Francis of Assisi said “Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

The necessary- shoot two images on a tripod expose for the stars expose for the sunrise, the possible blend them in software and suddenly you have done the impossible.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

Albert Einstein posited that we are initial observers time and of things around us. That no two people will observe, see or experience an event the same way based on our position to the event as it happens.

However no mater what or placement to an image all observers see the moment of a stilled moment of time, the photograph, exactly the same way.

One of the profound honors, and it is an honor, I have been allowed to experience with my camera is to be in places where people have never seen an image of themselves or for that matter are aware of the power of the light capturing light saber that I wield.

I captured this image on my first morning of my way to my three day Varanasi workshop sponsored www.tumbhi.com.I am amazed by the connection that Indians have with this river. You hear about how the River Ganges is the root of all things Hindu and Indian. If you live outside of India this statement, at least for me has been more of a literary event than a reality. But to witness this connection is truly spell binding.

The image was captured by a Nikon D-4 iso 4000 with a 80-400 mm Nano coated VR II lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 128 gigabyte 1000 speed UDMA Flash media. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color Efex 4.0.

I am not a wildlife photographer. The closet thing I have ever shot that was a wild animal is my elusive Nibelung house cats Gianni and Valentino. I am a believer that you fallinlove a thousand times a day usually around 125 to 250th of a second. Not a big believer in long exposures or long relationships. But when the image takes you in that moment you fall in love with it.

SERVER TRAVELING : The Fine Art of Time Travel

This is a misplaced image. It was processed to be worked on. But wound up in a folder labeled

FLOWERS_MAYBE_2_DO. I do remember freezing my ass off being rained on and it was one those rare moments at tunnel view where no one was there because they were shiner than I was. There was a brief moment of a break in the clouds. the sun hit the water fall and then the water really fell from the sky. I was complaining to my self at the the time. I can promise you I will never complain again . I sooooo look forward to being able to be somewhere else as I am sure we all do than the post stamp of a piece of land that is my current lil'slice of heaven.

In Cuba, Havana specifically Dominos on Sunday are played sometning between an Olympic event and a blood sport. The level of intensity stops time. Simply pit do not get between the players and the game. Thank God for silent shutters and zoom lenses.

There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant and has a frame rat faster than your nervous system can register.

You can truly create a place when and where the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera.

There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.

Shot with the AMAZING Z9. The Z9 is more camera than I am photographer.

We we just see with our eyes we see everything, everywhere all at once. When I look through the lens I see the world in isolation one part at a time and I see it at the speed life while writing with light and taken by it one fraction of a second moment at a time

This image was captured with the Nikon Zf and the 50mm f1.2 Nikkor. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

In a 10 day period I flew to SaltLake City, drove to Yellowstone, drove to Jackson Hole Wyoming, then to Moab then back to Salt Lake City then back to Moab then back to Salt lake City then flew to Los Angeles. I drove 2264 miles and spent 23 hours in a car. After that juggernaught I had a 21 hour turn around and flew to New York city for 7 days then back to Los Angeles (9 hour turn around and flew to Maine for a week.

This is image was capture during the first trip to Moab. It was a new moon, so the Milky Way was visible at 3:30am.

Another image of the Golden Gate Bridge during my most recent "Answering the Call of the Fog" treks to the city by the bay. I have been going here for years and never once "saw" this even though I have seen it many, many many times. The lesson I have learned from this life long exercise is that there is always a new and different way to see the same thing.

I shot this image whilst being lost on a windy ass road somewhere around Evora Portugal. Portugal is the only place I have ever been that had an opinion on how it wanted to be shot. For as colorful a place as it it is, it truly prefers to be photographed in black and white. If you approach light as if it is a solid object. That is to say that the subject is interrupting the light. The the light truly becomes the jewel of the photograph.

This is an image from my last trip to Cuba. It is a joy to work with Cuban dancers. ( I will get back to Portugal images in a bit )

I find the older one gets the more your images are shot at eye level. I was sitting on the dance floor swapping lenses when the choreographer stopped the rehearsal to describe to the dancers what he wanted them to try for him. This is an image of resting dancer feet.

I am asked frequently when do yo know when an image should be black and white image? Simple when the color gets in the way of the gesture.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. I shot this image between 4;30am and 6:30am in Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens.

This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

Not every picture has to be sharp to be special. I is from imperfection perfection comes a perfectly imperfect moment. the beauty inlays to be found in the blur. Needing to have a image with everything perfectly “In focus” is really overrated.

I have never met an image that did not know it was a black and white photograph. From moment of capture it has always had an opinion. I have also heard a lot of horse fertilizer about what makes a black whit image a black and white image.

Every image you capture you see in color. When we shot film eventohouh the film wa black and white what we saw was color. Soooo… Mr/ Smartypants what;’s the magic equation then you ask?

When the distraction of color gets in the way of the abstraction of the images gesture. Gesture is the key element of every photograph.

As to this image- It could be argued that in most parts of Cuba a cigar is the sixth finger of a hand

WHAT A BLAST this last workshop to Cuba was.

the Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

Of the many things that have captured me about Cuba over the years the approaching two decades of me shooting the country and the people is the friendliness of the dogs and cats. Unlike here you almost never hear a dog bark unless it’s in welcome. Cats are always up for a ear tug and a head scratch, stray or someone’s house cat. In cuba more than anywhere as – Christopher Morley quipped no one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does.

This subject of this image was 90 degrees to the left of the previous image from yesterday’s upload. I did nothing more tan our to the right and switch to the camera body that had the 135mm lens on it.

So again I say-

The most wonderful images, for me. Are the ones that are of interesting plainnesses. The moment between moments on the way from somewhere to somewhere else whist neither moving or standing still. The moments that no-one actually sees as the move through there individual journeys to where ever their somewhere to somewhere else.

The power of of wielding the light saber of inertial observance, I.e. the camera allows the inertial observer, I.e. the photographer to be taken by the moment of the fleeting movement of time and freeze it. So we can always travel back to that exact spot and give ourselves the greatest give one can give- a memory.

I do not take pictures as either an avocation, the way to pay the rent or for the “art” of it. The images take me. I just go for a walk and allow myself to slowdown to the speed of life. If you go out with the intent to make a photograph your images will never meet you expectations. However if you go out with the intention of not doing that all you can do is exceed your expectations.

I think a portrait is at it's best when you photograph the space between the person being photographed and the person who is being taken by the photograph is the thing that is in the photograph.

This image is of the Ballet dancer Maripaz Laguna shot in the streets of Havana.

Yup I bit the bullet and modified a Z9 for infrared. I did a full spectrum conversion and then am using the bayonet filters from Kolarivision. Which means I can have my cake and eat it too. THe first element of the lens dictates everything that is going to happen from the quality of the light and resolution of thar light. So putting the IR filter at the end of the light path is far better than putting a filter in front of the lens. a full spectrum conversion allows me to bring my camera back to visible spectrum with a different filter as well as having every flavor of IR....coool....

There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant. You can truly create a place when the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera.

There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.

Shot with the AMAZING Z9. The Z9 is more camera than I am photographer.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

At the risk of ticking off some people by reacting myself….

Sir Terry’s quote is one of my most repeated mantras. Light is as important to an image as dark. I frequently find myself intersecting this mantra with Michelangelo’s approach to sculpture which was to remove everything that “isn’t” and free the sculpture from the living stone. If you replace the word for “sculpture” with “image” and “stone” with “RAW File” and a dab of The Artist Henri Matisse’s thought “a little white paint goes a long way” you have the entire core of how I post process.

What makes this image work is the use of dark and that a little bit of light goes a long way. What is also interesting is that even though the gesture of the image is so strong that it works extremely well as a black and white, I prefer the color version because it supports the gesture.

But ultimately Art is in the eye of the viewer. Self expression is in the eye of of the image’s creator.

I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Turning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”

My father was a New Yorker. I would every chance I could when ever I was in his city to capture images of the moments from the stories he would tell me about growing up in New York City. He passed away 10 years ago, I still love finding the echoes of hs memories.

I shot this image on my walk down from the mountain I had climbed in the dark and in a whiteout fog without coffee whilst shooting in the vinales valley. The perfection of the light was breathtaking.

I believe that light is the jewel of the photograph and approach light as if it is a solid object. That is to say that the subject is interrupting the light. Pretty light makes even the plainest, simplest thing beautiful.

Post Cards from the vacation that is my life. the "I have been some remote placeless but....... " section 2011 edition

I was on assignment for American Photo magazine (back when magazines existed...) This is in a region in Burma that non Burmese (and even then it is strictly limited) can no longer travel to.

There is an old wives tale that the most beautiful women in South east Asia are from Burma specifically from the village I photographed this woman in. So hard core was this belief back in the day that the men of the village took to tattooing the faces of the women so no one would want to steal them. This was done with bamboo needle and ink at 13 years old with out any for of local anesthetic.

To get to this village this village we travelled 11 hours by car one one of the "Burma Super Highways" three hours by boat then 6 hours by car then 7 hour day boat during the monsoon season up the Irrawaddy river. Along the way we had to bail the boat out and head to shot when it dumped rain or we would sink ( this is also where I proved that a Nikon camera can indeed be pelted with 1.7 liters of water per hour....). All I know is that when we FINALLY arrived sat this village I was hell bent on photographing a tattooed face woman. I entered the village and it was completely empty. Only chickens and pigs running around.

As my angst, frustration and concern started to simmer to a boil of "@&$*%(!!" level expletives, I hear, flowing in the air around me, the is beautiful bell/bird song like voice in the most exquisite mix of births and brumes accented English say "Are you looking for me?" I spin around and all there is an empty village. the again I hear flowing in the air around me, the most beautiful voice " I cannot come down because I mail but you may photograph me if you would like to."

I would like to believe that my mother did not have any idiot children I said to my self "look up" and there above me had to be one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. Stopped me dead in my tracks. Also keep in mind that the last white man to visit this village must have been during the British occupation. I eventually found my voice and said "yes I traveled here to photograph you" (I had no idea that I had travel here just to photograph this woman but it was as if she was notified via psychic link or carrier pigeon that I was on my way and on "official" American Photographer magazine business. She smiled, giggled a bit, I then lifted up my camera she made this face.

This is from my recent trip to Portugal.

I have to go a wee bit out of the way to get to the point.

I was in Oporto having breakfast at a cafe with a view of the mouth of the Douro river as it meets with the ocean. There were tram tracks just in front of where I was going to eati my morning meal. It was 9:30ish, the final wisps of morning fog were leaving to go where ever they go. I sat down ordered my first coffee, I was watching the fishing boats in the river it was 10:15ish.

I had just ordered my second pingo when this beautifully maintained old tram rolled by. I thought they get fog here, they have old trams…. I get up early I’m gonna get me some old tram in fog action. Cool. I spent the whole day on and of pre-visualizing my epic tram in fog in Oporto shot.

It rained the next two days. The night of the second day the rain stopped and the temprature dropped- Which means SERIOUS WHITE OUT FOG!!!!!

I am up at the asscrack of dawn, I am Geared up and out the door across the river and where I need to be. I show up. The fog sowed up. So where’s the tram? Did someone forget to tell the tram to show up? I walk into the lobby of a boutique hotel (my cafe was not open yet) and asked the front desk “where’s the tram?” He said “they don’t start running until 10:00am.

Here’s the thing I know better. you pre-visualize an image you deserve what you get. This is firmware level (or so I thought) stuff for me.

So I just started walking the seven and half miles back to where I was staying. The image I pre-visualized ? I never shot it, I deserved what I got. The moment I started to want nothing I got everything I ever wanted.

CATS!!!

This is from my latest trip to Cuba. I admit it I am a cat lady. I shot this with thew 50mm 1.8 S series lens. A lens that truly blew me away. To be honest I have alway viewed a 50mm lens as an optical lens cap. I have learned the error of my ways. This is a breathtaking star lens with beautiful bokeh.

Cuba is music. Music in the the way people move throughout their day, music in the flow of the way cuban ballet dancers dance and their is music in the shape of every moment that takes you to snap the shutter. I am over of Bokeh. Bokeh is the lyrical part of the lens that translates to the pretty of an image. The pretty is always in the blur.

WHAT A BLAST this last workshop was.I shot this image of the trumpet player Rolando Lara. When I was young I played trumpet. Not like Rolando. Like I said Bokeh is my thing.This image was captured with the Nikon Zf and the50mm f1.2 Nikkor. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

Some of things that are part of my inner monologue that I repeat unconsciously to myself whilst I shoot:

A pattern is interesting. A pattern interrupted is more interesting. The only thing truly in focus in a image is that which the lens is focused upon. Everything els is varying levels of out of focus.

The pretty is in the blur.

A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject of the picture is not in motion.

I shot this with the Nikon Z8 and the 85mm f1.2 Nikkor S. Raw file processed in NX Studio NiK collection Silver Efex Pro v7 in Photoshop beta.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Effects Suite and Nik Collection Software. Wacom Cintq and a BenQ PG2401PT Adobe RB monitor for final color approval.

DANCERS!!!

I love photographing dancers, especially Cuban Ballet Dancers. Ahora Pregunto y le Digo in natural light during practice for "the Nutcracker." This is from my latest trip to Cuba.

I shot this with the brand new Nikon Z50 50-250mm DX S lens. I decided to shoot all but one day exclusively with this camera in a real world situation, and nothing is more "real World" than doing street photography on the streets of Havana.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.

This is Frank who is considered to be one of the world's greatest motorcycle Mechanics. If only he worked on vintage BMW's instead of just Harleys and vintage Indians....

The llight source was sunlight reflecting off of concrete and the garage door was half way up.

All I can say is thank God for Nikon's amazing focusing speed on the D5 as well as group focus feature! And thank God for 12 fps and a 200 shoot buffer when shooting RAW in frame waster mode. Talk about being taken by your subject to take a photograph. I truly just held on and was pulled through the camera!

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of these brushes will be staying home.This lens has a permanent place in my camera bag.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware (colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

Further post processing Photoshop CC 2015.5, Nik collection by Google, oNonesoftware ver.10.5. Wacom Cintiq 27QHD, Benq SW2700 monitor (for approval color)
