"Light, gwsture and color are the key elements of any image. Light and color are obvious but it is gesture that is the most important. "
-Jay maisel
There is gesture in every image it is your job to find the most telling. It is easy to have a keen eye for the obvious when you are in the hair ball of the moment when your are shooting. BUt to be open the the totality of the moment, tho fall in a state of thoughtful thoughtless thought and be taken. That is really the goal. Tell the whole story of everything that moves and takes you.
This image is of the Guitar player Adel Nunes Castillo of Stepteto Habanero playing his guitar.
There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant and has a frame rat faster than your nervous system can register.
You can truly create a place when and where the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera.
There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.
Shot with the AMAZING Z9. The Z9 is more camera than I am photographer.

Trust me I shot other things... but a promise is a promise to the dancers and musicians (from my last trip to Cuba with Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Cuba workshop)
This image is of the trumpet player Jose Gomez Rodreguez of Stepteto Habanero.
When the D850. was released it hand facial recognition follow focus (not sure if that's the "official" name for it) in Live view. It also could shoot in silent mode in live view. So I hooked up a remote and with te 70-200mm f2.8 I shot "conversational portraits" in which the subject had no idea that I was or when I was taking a picture.
Cook to the Z9-

On January 7th I had to purchase a new laptop. The reason? The size of D800 files. To process one from start to finish it felt like I was passing a birthday every time I worked on one. Soooo I decided that it was time to suck it up and buy a new machine. The machine I decided on was the non Retina display 15 inch 2.7 Macbook pro with a 1TB hard drive. The reason? Glossy screens in the field do not work for me and a hard wired hard drive that I cannot replace should I need to (I have yet to own a laptop where I have not needed to) is not a prudent choice for someone who works his laptop as hard as I do. I get that this is the future, but for now I can still delay the inevitable. Also it has an Ethernet port, Firewire 800 USB 3 and Thunderbolt. SO everything I own today works.
This time I decided to suck it up and instead of doing the transfer of software from old to new, I would do a complete clean install of ALL of the software. Which is, on the very best day and by anyone's measure, not my idea of a good time. To compound this joyous experience I was leaving for Burma (Myanmar) first thing in the morning January 8th. So January 7th I had every computer I own download all of the software that I needed from the internet. The plan install on the airplane all software.
One of the things that happens is laptops, if you travel a lot and live on your laptop, become like the closet of a college student the night before the parents come to visit him the dorm; filled with EVERYTHING you have ever owned. The other thing is you take that for granted. You just accept that everything you need is just there 'cuz..well.. it's just there. I replace my laptop every three years and the one I was replacing was going on four years, so yeah it was time.
Well I did not think to actually BRING the old laptop....
So when I went to install all the software I did not have the any of the serial numbers. Because the folder that is in my Documents folder "ALL_SERIAL_NUMBERS" was not on my new laptop it was on my old laptop. Did I mention I was going to Burma? And did I mention where I was going in Burma was the Himalayas to photograph remote mountain tribes? To say the internet is slow in Burma would be to give slow internet a bad name, and to think that there would be internet access in the huts of remote mountain tribes in the Himalayas? So I was left as an option "demo mode" for all of my software.
Which worked! I had to click "demo" everytime I lauched anything, but I caused this issue so I had only me to blame (I hate that when that happens... yelling at yourself is only fun for those watching).
So yesterday I was in Florida ( I live in Los Angeles, I flew straight to Miami from Yangon Burma, or 31 hours, to teach). Well the demos timed out. Most importantly the demo for my beloved Niksoftware Color Efex Pro 4 timed out... It was not until that moment that I realized just how important and how much of my imaging relies of that technology. In the simplest of terms I cannot creat the images that I create without it. I was stopped cold. Did I know how to kinda work around it in Photoshop? Yeah I guess but why? I cannot achieve the quality of image enhancement. Not to sound like a commercial but if anyone form Niksoftware is listening thank you. Thank you for every image I have created in the past 13 years.
This is the image that I was stopped until late last night. This image was captured by a Nikon D800camera. 70-200 f4 Nano coated VR II lens in the Nikon Electronic Image File Formant (.NEF) file was post processed using Capture NX2 Photoshop CS6, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efexpro.

If you are out there shooting, things will happen for you. If you’re not out there, you’ll only hear about it.

I have had a personal project going on 35 years to find photographs of New York City from the stories told to me by my father. Some of them involve memories from having been there with him when I was child, some were his memories of when he was young. Every year when I went to visit I would bring him the images I found of the past that was present the day I clicked the shutter.
He may have passed on to wherever we pass on to but I still make it a point to seek out those places. That now has evolved into being part of my Turning the last Page project.
This image is of the view of the subway station that we would take to get into the "City" and in 1964 & 65 to get to the New York World's Fair.
THe greates gift you can give both yourself and someone else is a memory.

More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.
This is of the one of my favorite people to photograph the actress Karen Witter Lorre.
I shot this with a Nikon F5 a Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso. Scanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D500.
To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.
For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.
I shot this whilst walking down Columbus street in NYC on the west side. There was a scaffolding above me because there were repairs happening over head. and the daylight was streaming through a crack in the planking. When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me
I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of this brushes will be staying home. This lens has a permanent place in my camera bag.
There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.
This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.
So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.
Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. Sometimes the distraction of color requires the subtraction of color to bring out the abstraction of the gesture of the image. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens. This is the image in Chromatic Grayscale.
This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

I am on my second week of teachIng at Maine Media Workshops, last week was my fall color workshop called “Colors of Fall” (VERY pithy naming if I do say so myself) . This week was my master printing class. SO shooting was not the focus. HOWEVER- I am am by proclivity a San Franciscan. So it is my belief that we invented fog. SO when I get fog I shoot it. So at zero dark thirty I dragged my class out to shoot in the fog.

To see in color is a delight for the eye but to see in black and white is a delight for the soul
– Andri Cauldwell
We we just see with our eyes we see everything, everywhere all at once. When I look through the lens I see the world in isolation one part at a time and I see it at the speed life while writing with light and taken by it one fraction of a second moment at a time.
This image was captured with the Nikon Zf and the 28-75mm f2.8 Nikkor. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

150 milliseconds. IS what neuroscience has measured as the “moment” of the “now”. We as seining beings travel from the past to the future which becomes the present, the present is measured as a time frame between 2 and 7 seconds. A still photograph freezes tha 150 millisecond moment so that the echo is always in the present and always in the now whenever it is viewed.
Cannot say the enough- A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject of the picture is not in motion.

I love photographing the moments where my subject is so lost in thought they forget that I am standing in front of them with camera and lens. From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This is from the week after my students went back to the US. This time I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5. If Dominoes is the national pastime, boxing is the national religion of Cuba. (or drinking rum depends on who you ask.) I had the chance to spend a few hours in a local gym where several of the Cuban Olympic team train.
So so if you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source. Now you know.
However......
There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa.....
Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.
This image is from the NYC leg of the shoot. I shot this wAsking to the 79thstreet subway on my way to B&H. I am a sucker for flowers. I loved th way th followers and the celophane interplayed with the tack sharp crystal clear focus focus against a creamyness of bokeh is something I fell in love with every time I clicked the shutter.
Talk about W. Eugene Smith being right when he said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me
I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas.

I shot this image of Dilara Acar in Moab when I crashed Rolando Gomez's model workshop. I am glad Rolando is a generous man with his time! This ismsge was captured with the D850 and the 24-120mm Nano coated lens shot wide open. I am working on a a new approach to shooting that Paul Van Allen has dubbed as the "conversational portrait" it has to do with some of things you can now do with the D850 that you can't do with any other camera.

Post Cards from the vacation that is my life. the "I have been some remote placeless but....... " section 2011 edition
(three of four images)
I was on assignment for American Photo magazine (back when magazines existed...) This is in a region in Burma that non Burmese (and even then it is strictly limited) can no longer travel to.
This is the thrid shot of the sequence after she gave me the "scary laser stare of death by a tattooed faced woman" and the the one where she looks right through me stares. I look from behind my camera say to her "OH come on....." this last capture is the gift of her smile.
See explaining story below:
There is an old wives tale that the most beautiful women in South east Asia are from Burma specifically from the village I photographed this woman in. So hard core was this belief back in the day that the men of the village took to tattooing the faces of the women so no one would want to steal them. This was done with bamboo needle and ink at 13 years old with out any for of local anesthetic.
To get to this village this village we travelled 11 hours by car one one of the "Burma Super Highways" three hours by boat then 6 hours by car then 7 hour day boat during the monsoon season up the Irrawaddy river. Along the way we had to bail the boat out and head to shot when it dumped rain or we would sink ( this is also where I proved that a Nikon camera can indeed be pelted with 1.7 liters of water per hour....). All I know is that when we FINALLY arrived sat this village I was hell bent on photographing a tattooed face woman. I entered the village and it was completely empty. Only chickens and pigs running around.
As my angst, frustration and concern started to simmer to a boil of "@&$*%(!!" level expletives, I hear, flowing in the air around me, the is beautiful bell/bird song like voice in the most exquisite mix of births and brumes accented English say "Are you looking for me?" I spin around and all there is an empty village. the again I hear flowing in the air around me, the most beautiful voice " I cannot come down because I mail but you may photograph me if you would like to."
I would like to believe that my mother did not have any idiot children I said to my self "look up" and there above me had to be one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. Stopped me dead in my tracks. Also keep in mind that the last white man to visit this village must have been during the British occupation. I eventually found my voice and said "yes I traveled here to photograph you" (I had no idea that I had travel here just to photograph this woman but it was as if she was notified via psychic link or carrier pigeon that I was on my way and on "official" American Photographer magazine business. She smiled, giggled a bit, I then lifted up my camera she made this face.

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
I am by training and proclivity black and white photographer. Something my uncle C.J. said to me at an early age was black and white isn’t just an aesthetic choice, it makes you feel like you’re looking into the soul of the world, without distractions It is an always ongoing dialogue between the past and present. I didn’t even know what “aesthetic” meant just that I need to get me some.
He taught me how to print. Learning how to print in black and white taught me how to see, not just look. Jay Maisel taught me how go from taking to being taken.
I shot this with the 28-400mm f 4-8 Nikkor lens. 1/250 of a second ISO 4500. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection & Silver Efex 7 by DxO using the Oz to Kansas conversion technique.

This is another image from my March 2015 trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book series titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."
The camera was the fabulous Nikon D810. The lens was 105mm f 1.4. Arguably the best lens Nikon has ever made. Certainly the best lens I have ever shot with.
To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.
For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects by a make-up stylist, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontaneous none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject.
My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.
This is an image of a mother and child as I was walking the street of Santiago de Cuba. In this image,I just chose to look up. The history of a place is held like an expectant breath from the bottom of the third floor looking up or the floor of the fourth floor looking down. A time less photograph is, for me, a breath waiting forever to exhale.
The light source was ambient mostly cloudy daylight right around sunset.
When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.
I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.
There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.
This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.
So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.
Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.
NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.
To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.
So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.
I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

As brutal as boxing can be its beautiful to watch as ballet. As painful to practice as ballet is is as painful it is to train to box. What I have observed whilst photographing the practice to perfection of both is the focus of excluding all things of the outside world to just that of the moment that they are in in. An almost rapture like expression is shared by both dancers and boxers.

This from my most recent trip to Myanmar. ISoooo.... I m now back in Yangon after my journey to the outskirts of the absolute middle of nowhere. I have a hardfast rule....I NEVER GIVE MONEY TO ANYONE. The reason is to do this was I was told early on by one of my "fixers" that doing this is to help create a society of beggars. Give food, shampoo, soap, paper, pencils toothbrush yes. Cash nope (unless it's a school) The only exception is when I cross paths with a Buddhist Monk or Nun, Their journey is one of pray and living off the kindness of strangers. Got no problem with that. So I gave this nun (maybe 4 foot tall) 5000 Kyat. (about 3 dollars US) She looks at me, then my camera then me, points her chin up to me taps her chest points to the camera. You alway take the gift that is given and try to do the right thing every time you can.

Sooo back to the dancers and musicians part of this broadcast..... (from my last trip to Cuba with Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Cuba workshop)BUT IN INFRARED!!!
Yup I bit the bullet and modified a Z9 for infrared. I did a full spectrum conversion and then am using the bayonet filters from Kolarivision. Which means I can have my cake and eat it too. THe first element of the lens dictates everything that is going to happen from the quality of the light and resolution of thar light. So putting the IR filter at the end of the light path is far better than putting a filter in front of the lens. a full spectrum conversion allows me to bring my camera back to visible spectrum with a different filter as well as having every flavor of IR....coool....

There s a zen monk like focus of a dancer at the barre. Three embodiment of practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. You have to practice at practicing. The only awareness is in the observation of how everything feels as the ballerina goes through the gestures of the pose. I simply do not exist in the reality of the moment. Only the perfecting the forms of the dance.

There are things you hear in your life that were said in passing by one person, but ring like a bell and change the way you see the world forever. One such set of words was said by the great photographer (and A.C.R|T. Alum) Bob Krist "What would you rather look at? A line of laundry beautifully lit or the Taj Mahal poorly lit?" Now you know why I always take this picture whenever I see it. Those words said in passing guide my eye in every image. Thank you Bob.

"Light, gwsture and color are the key elements of any image. Light and color are obvious but it is gesture that is the most important. "

However...... There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa..... Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.
Nikon D5 camera, 28-300mm lens. Post processed in Photoshop CC 2015. File raw processed in Capture NX-D.
