More from “Making up for lost time. A lot of what I have shot since March I cannot show for a bit.” collection
Some of things that are part of my inner monologue that I repeat unconsciously to myself whilst I shoot:
A pattern is interesting. A pattern interrupted is more interesting. The only thing truly in focus in a image is that which the lens is focused upon. Everything els is varying levels of out of focus.
The pretty is in the blur.
A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject of the picture is not in motion.

DANCERS!!!
I love photographing dancers, especially Cuban Ballet Dancers. Ahora Pregunto y le Digo in natural light during practice for "the Nutcracker." This is from my latest trip to Cuba.
I shot this with the brand new Nikon Z50 50-250mm DX S lens. I decided to shoot all but one day exclusively with this camera in a real world situation, and nothing is more "real World" than doing street photography on the streets of Havana.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.
To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.
For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.
This is Frank who is considered to be one of the world's greatest motorcycle Mechanics. If only he worked on vintage BMW's instead of just Harleys and vintage Indians....
The llight source was sunlight reflecting off of concrete and the garage door was half way up.
All I can say is thank God for Nikon's amazing focusing speed on the D5 as well as group focus feature! And thank God for 12 fps and a 200 shoot buffer when shooting RAW in frame waster mode. Talk about being taken by your subject to take a photograph. I truly just held on and was pulled through the camera!
When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me
I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of these brushes will be staying home. This lens has a permanent place in my camera bag.
There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.
This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.
So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.
Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..
NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware (colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.
To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.
So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from internet trolls.
I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.
― Terry Pratchett
From my three weeks in Namibia—
At the risk of ticking off some people by reacting myself….
Sir Terry’s quote is one of my most repeated mantras. Light is as important to an image as dark. I frequently find myself intersecting this mantra with Michelangelo’s approach to sculpture which was to remove everything that “isn’t” and free the sculpture from the living stone. If you replace the word for “sculpture” with “image” and “stone” with “RAW File” and a dab of The Artist Henri Matisse’s thought “a little white paint goes a long way” you have the entire core of how I post process.
What makes this image work is the use of dark and that a little bit of light goes a long way. What is also interesting is that even though the gesture of the image is so strong that it works extremely well as a black and white, I prefer the color version because it supports the gesture.
But ultimately Art is in the eye of the viewer. Self expression is in the eye of of the image’s creator.
I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Turning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”

I am in Oporto Portugal. I was on a quest to find a bakery that is propertied o have the best bread in Portugal. Alas it stated to rain, a drizzle then a torrential downpour. Good thing my camera can withstand 1.7 liters of rain per hour, so the literature says. I found the stage, an windy ass street (there are a lot of them here) Frame the shot and wait. Colors answer feeling in man; shapes answer thought; and motion answers will.
—– John Sterling.
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
I am not a big believer in the 17th century painting theory approach to composition. As a matter of fact I think it is dogmatic, pedantic and pompously silly. Grecian Mean, Golden rule, Rule of Thirds, et.al. for me is the outcome of a bunch of dead old guys sitting around a rtable trying to define what a bunch of deader older guys were thinking.
. I feel that understanding human visual perception and how we “see” things is the more important thing to understand. For me, and what guides my hand in post, is that all my images are optical illusions basically a variation on the French drop coin trick.
The ownership of color in an image is the most critical factor in the visual success of the image. A pattern is interesting but a pattern interrupted is more interesting Shape is the enemy of color. The eye has a tendency to see the shape over the color. THe key is to cause shape to become the unwitting ally of color so you will see the colors over the shape whilst still capturing the gesture of the image.
There is more to boxing than the elegance of the randomness of the ring.

This is a 66 image focus shift capture from Jeff Mitchel's prototype Nikon Z7 full frame mirrioless camera using the FTZ adapter and a 105mm nano coated macro lens. (The FTZ "Adapter" would be better describe IMHO as a coupler. There to my observation no loss of functionality or quality from an F-mount mount camera to a Z mount camera when using it). The list of "cool" stuff that this camera can do is mind boggling. In addition to Focus Shift, you can preview the focus stack in camera and use it to determine how many files you actually need to shoot, instead of the pray and spray approach. I shot this as a jpeg because I do not have the updated software to read Z NEF files/. I also shot this in sRGB.
The focus stacked files were merged using Helicon Focus (the best software to do this sorta thing. Opened in Photoshop to resize the file.

I started shooting flowers back in the day to test out new gear because as subjects go, they can sit for hours whilst I figure things out and the don’t talk Bach or need a model release. They are also a great way to learn about depth of field, bokeh, the play of light and portraiture.

* POINT OF CLARIFICATION: So there is no misunderstanding, In this shot this is the light that was available, "available light" This is a random shot, nothing was added. i.e. the lights used by the bar in the restaurant is the illumination. So to be crystal clear I did not add the light, I shot the light that was there. To be specific I looked up saw the abstract took the picture, end of thought. The point of the exercise for me was to not use anything but the light of the environment I found myself in. I shot what was in front of me that took me.
This image is from the NYC leg of the shoot. I shot this whilst waiting to be seated in the bar at my favorite restaurant in NYC, Dovetail, at 77th and Columbus. I have always been into abstracts. The abilty to play tack sharp crystal clear (pun intended) focus against a creamyness of bokeh is something I fell in love with every time I clicked the shutter.
Talk about W. Eugene Smith being right when he said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me

Without music, life would be a mistake.
– Friedrich Nietzsche
This image is from most recent trip to Cuba.
All creativity comes form the same place within us. I believe we all have the ability to create greatness. It is just a mater of what metaphor we choose to express the create spark of madness we are all born with. Every artist has their instrument, ballet dancers their finely trained bodies that they hurtle through space defying gravity, painters have their brushes, paints and canvas, musicians the instrument they close to release the voice from within, a chef has the kitchen and all the flavors of imagination and the photographer has the camera, lens and print.
The joy of all of this is to get lost in the doing, to be held in the movement of the unending sensation of the movement of connection. It is not of matter of how you choose to express your creativity. It is a matter of does they way you express your creativity give you joy.
The mistake is to not express the momentary lapse of reason that comes from the clarity of creating something that brings you joy.

When I have a camera in my hand I fall in love a thousand times a day. Usually between 125-500 of a second. I am not into long relationships or long exposures. I love when I can be take by the image.
Cannot say the enough- A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject of the picture is not in motion.
I shot this with the Nikon Z8 and the 85mm f1.2 Nikkor S. Raw file processed in NX Studio NiK collection Silver Efex Pro v7 in Photoshop beta.

When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!”
– Ted Grant
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
I always get asked these four questions: Do you see in black and white, can you teach me how to see in black and white, how do you know when an image is supposed to be a black and white and how come your blacks and white images look better than my black and white images.
Then I heard and read a lot of noise about how it’s all about contrast, contrast light and dark and contrast. Or basically the person positing and exposing these thoughts does not really have a clue.
In the film days when you put black and white film in the camera you saw the image in color and the film recorded it in grayscale base off a specific tonal production curve unique to the flavor of film that was in the camera. SO every image was black and white.
So what makes an image a successful black and white? It comes down to the three core elements (according to Jay Maisel or the four key elements according to me, because I cannot leave well enough alone), Light, Gesture and Color (Jay’s) and time (mine). According to Jay Light and Color are obvious but it is Gesture that is the most important, Gesture that is the most telling.
SO the equation for when an image wants/needs to become a black and white is when the color of the image distracts from the gesture of the image.
For example this image, the colors a lovely, but the truly distract from the gesture of the dancers which is beautiful and timeless.
The point? I have never met an image did not know or tell me that it was wanting to be a black and white image. The gesture of the image will always let you know. As to the rest of it being light a nd dark and contrast contrast and more contrast? That really is the after thought and holds true for both color and black and white.

—— Albert Einstein
I shot this image in a place you can no longer go, The Rahkine region of Myanmar. I was on assignment for American Photo magazine, We were in a boat on the Irrawaddy river during Monsoon season we were hit with a burst of rain so strong that we frantically had to get to shore so we would not sink, we ran to first hut we could find where a family was huddled in the same situation we were.
I was absolutely soaked, my gear was soaked, we were all soaked. And in all of that this moment moved me, and two children took the image the image and cause my finger to press the shutter. The near death experience erased and the reason why I was there became self evident.
Art is long. Life is short. A moment of time last for ever in a photograph

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path. This a warrior form Namiyupee village
This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival. Talent is nothing without dedication and discipline, and dedication and discipline is a talent in itself.
—– Luke Campbel.
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
As a general rule I never set up any of my images. On those occasions when I have an ima ge where I need a dancer to be in a specific place, I do as much as one can to be vague (to the point of the dancer feeling I’n completely clueless) about why I want from them. One of, in not the most important concept that drives the way I approach being taken by the image is this: In absolute spontaneity to you get absolute truth. You can only be one way if you are spontaneous and that is truthful.
I also as close to never one can get crop an image.99.9% of all the images I have ever shot are full frame. I believe that the rectangle I see in the viewfinder is the canvas to compose within.
Simply put I do not pre-visualize my images before I shoot them I only pre-visualize then after they are shot.
SO to this image. I was shooting boxers, the whistle blew, the practice “bout” ended and the boxer who was sparring with the boxer I was actually shooting at the moment move to the ropes to hear what the Riner was saying to him I filled the Fram pushed the shutter ring then he went back to center ring and the whistle blew to start the new bout of sparring.
The point? It took more time to describe it and more time for you to read the description of events than it took to track, frame and capture the moment.
Each and every person who desires to to be a photographer has the talent to do it. But Talent is nothing without dedication and discipline, and dedication and discipline is a talent in itself.
Again I say here is more to boxing than the elegance of the randomness of the ring.

Only in spontaneity can we be who we truly are
— John McLaughlin
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
The most wonderful images, for me. Are the ones that are of interesting plainnesses. The moment between moments on the way from somewhere to somewhere else whist neither moving or standing still. The moments that no-one actually sees as the move through there individual journeys to where ever their somewhere to somewhere else.
The power of of wielding the light saber of inertial observance, I.e. the camera allows the inertial observer, I.e. the photographer to be taken by the moment of the fleeting movement of time and freeze it. So we can always travel back to that exact spot and give ourselves the greatest give one can give- a memory.

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba. It was sunset. II was doing one of my guilty pleasures in Havana. Riding in a “Coco”. The Cuban version of a TukTuk. I had talked the driver to go down the Malicon, something they try not to do. Don’t know why. I love riding in a Coco down the Malicon the sea breeze and the occasional splash of water is just a pleasure that makes me giggle. We were waiting for the light to change. Even when you are doing the most mundane of things, waiting for the light to change, if you pay attention a visual moment will show itslf

When I was asked to shoot the lens I was told I could only have it for 16 days. On my travel schedule during that time fram that meant 11 actual days of being able to shoot. Five of those days were travel days to get from here to there and back.
There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not inhaled by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.
I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of this brushes will be staying home. This lens has a permeant place in my camera bag.
This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.
So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.
Because of the D5- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..
NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware (colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds. They are all post processed if I put them up.
To be very crystal clear ALL of my images are post processed.
So that this non issue is no issue I have re-added my "FINAL" version. To MY personal sites. I think the issue really is you don't like my editing. OK. No offense but I do. I sign my name to everything I do. First and last.
I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, I always list the software and hardware.
