This image was shot "street walking" in Trinidad it was shot with the AMAZING Nikon D750 camera using the "the street sweeper" 28-300mm VR II Lens. I only brought the D750 and the D800 IR camera and three lenses. The D750 was such a dream to shoot I almost forgot I had the IR camera. ISO 1000 which is the new 100 ISO. Yup.... just walking the streets in Trinidad.

I believe that the essence of photography is black and white. Color is but a deviance.

And now for something completely different….. This is John Brunold. One of this greatest grips in Hollywood. Forgot more about lighting than I know. Knows more about lighting than most gaffers. He is the brains behind figuring out the madness of the way my shooting deck works. He was over last night to indulge in an adult beverage. I had the light turned on of my underlip green onyx bar/countertop (I know fancy) I looked up the Zf with the Plena was sitting on the kitchen counter I quickly put the camera in BW mode.

This is 16000iso, in camera Black and White, raw processed using Studio NX and control points. Image sized in Photoshop.

The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 lens Plena. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was one day when I was very young walking NYC with Jay Maisel. "Look in front all around then look up. When you are done going one way turn around and walk back." This is me looking up. I have found that people looking down at the street don't think that people on the street don't look up. So the feel invisible so ou get to see the parts of them that they hid when being seen by others.

In absolute spontaneity you get absolute truth. You can only be one way when you are spontaneous and that is truthful. All of the light was ambient. My job, and I invite you to consider it to be yours as well, is to see all the "pretty" of the world and to tell the truth of the moment. Let the picture be the one that takes you, not you be the one that takes the picture.

Black and white are the colors of photography. They symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.”

– Robert Frank

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

I have never met an image that I have shot the I did not know from the get go it was meant to be a black and white. The reason is simple when color becomes a distraction the the gesture the color needs to be removed and the black and white image needs to be abstracted out.

An image’s intention can hide in color, but in black and white all there is is the true intent of the moment.

I shot this with the 55mm f 1.2 S Nikkor lens. 1/2000 of a second ISO 1100. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

In a portrait, I'm looking for the silence in somebody.

– Henri Cartier-Bresson

This image is from most recent trip to Cuba.

Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting images. That said…

I approach shooting my portraits as if they were landscapes and my landscapes as if they were portraits.

The film direct Irvin Kershner said “There's nothing more interesting than the landscape of the human face.” My goal in a portrait is to be seen through by the subject, not looked at, so I can see the entire landscape of the silence within them. For me there is nothing more satisfying photographically knowing I heard that silence and photographed the entire landscape of it. The initial observance of the elusive breath held expectant moment of time, frozen for all time.

I shot this image just before the ballerina Lilia Laura Martinez Hernandez started her series of leaps for me at sunset. Hence the shutter speed of 1/16000. I need that to freeze the motion. To capture motion with stillness. I chose the Z6III because of the amazing low to no noise at higher ISO.

I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR S85mm f/1.2 lens. 1/400 of a second ISO 2800. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection and Silver efex 7.

What I love about Black & White photographs is that they’re more like reading the book than seeing the movie.

— Jennifer Price

From my three weeks in Namibia—

Light, gesture, color are the key elements of every photograph. But when do you know that an image is meant to be a a black and white image? The answer is a lot simpler than the general song and dance you hear the pixel pundits put forth. When the cold gets in the way of the gesture. Then it is time to abstract out the color from the image so the gesture remains.

I have included both color and BW.

There is no bad light. There is spectacular light and difficult light. It's up to you to use the light you have. You are responsible for every part of your image, even the parts you’re not interested in.The composition is already there, you just need to frame it.

Photography is an act of love. When I shoot I fall in love thousands a time in a day. I do not believe in long exposures and and long relationships.

Always shoot it now. It won't be the same when you go back..

I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Tuning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”

I have wanted to travel to Namibia for over 40 years. It all started with the second CD I ever purchased Sanford Ponder’s Etoshia” In the Land of Dry Water.

AND to answer the next question YES I will be organizing a workshop there.

I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR 28-400mm f/4-8 lens. mage raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

Cuba when comes to the arts from visual to extremely athletic Cuba is a very, very focused and dedicated place. Sports and dance are pursued with a drive rarely seen elsewhere. People from around the world come to Cuba to learn ballet and boxing. Both are full contact pursuits, both require the agility of of a butterfly one a bit more focused on the “contact” and take it to being able to sting like a bee.

This is an image of the boxer Davide Molinarida. He was so focused it did not register to him I was capturing him fighting until after the round was over.

Trust me I shot other things... but a promise is a promise to the dancers and musicians (from my last trip to Cuba with Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Cuba workshop)

This image is of the trumpet player Jose Gomez Rodreguez of Stepteto Habanero.

When the D850. was released it hand facial recognition follow focus (not sure if that's the "official" name for it) in Live view. It also could shoot in silent mode in live view. So I hooked up a remote and with te 70-200mm f2.8 I shot "conversational portraits" in which the subject had no idea that I was or when I was taking a picture.

Cook to the Z9-

There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant. You can truly create a place when the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera/

There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.

"Light gesture and color are the key components of any photograph. Light and color are obvious but it is gesture that is the most important. There is gesture in everything, the key is to find the gesture that is the most telling"

-Jay Maisel

This is image was shot at sunset in Trinidad Cuba. What caught my eye was the gesture of the dog, what made me choose to post process it was the picture in the picture. This is an great example of the fourth element of a photograph, timelessness.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book series titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 28-300mm "streetsweeper" To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

The secret to doing great portraits is to shoot your porteaits like landscapes. The secret to doing great landscapes is to shoot your landscapes like portraits.

You are only as good as the subject taht is in front of you.

This image is of the singerr player Dennis Francia Urbano of Stepteto Habanero.

There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant and has a frame rat faster than your nervous system can register.

You can truly create a place when and where the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera.

There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.

I shoot my portraits as landscapes and my landscapers as portraits.

I did this early morning in the Vinalas valley, Cuba.

WHAT A BLAST this last workshop was. I shot this images with the new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 lens Plena at f5.0. Yup this is a wide angle image shot with a telephoto lens. I also used the in camera BW mode to create the base image did the raw conversion in NX Studio using control points. The Zf is now the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

Life is a lot like jazz... it's best when you improvise.

There is more to life than increasing its speed.

– Mahatma Gandhi

This image is from most recent trip to Cuba.

I had the opportunity many many many years ago to do weeklong Shakespeare workshop in San Francisco with Ian Mckellen (he wasn’t Sir Ian at the time) something he said at the workshop that has stuck with me was “Try and understand what part you have to play in the world in which you live. There's more to life than you know and it's all happening out there. Discover what part you can play and then go for it.” It was in the context of acting and character development in context of your part of the whole in a play. I checked for the exact quote to make sure I had it correct. Memory is a fickle thing. But I digress.

As I discussed in the previous post all creativity comes from the same place from within us. Understanding what part of the whole yo play in things is the first step. In the sequence of moments of life you find yourself traveling in. Its is not at the speed of light but rather at the speed of life you should be moving. If you move t that speed you will come to discover there is more to this moments of life than you know and it's all happening 360 degrees all around you. It is easy to have a keen eye for the obvious, but only seeing the “big picture of the obvious makes you oblivious to the bigger picture of all of the parts that make up the whole of the moment you are in with a camera. Every moment tells a story, and in every moment here are inline stories that can be told.

I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR S Plena 135mm f/1.8 lens. 1/640 of a second ISO 100. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. I shot this image 4;30am Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens. This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I like to quote myself frequently and often, it makes me sound much more intelligent than I actually am.

— George Bernard Shaw

And now back to my latest trip to Cuba….. A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject is not in motion, The mission should you decide to accept it is to stop motion with stillness. So what makes one 1/25 of a second more decisive than the other 124 parts of the the second? When dit that second actually begin? In actuality photographs are captured at the speed of life. Which is neither fast or slow it is exactly in the middle. It is half-fast. So I alway recommend that you be a half-fast photographer.

These images of the ballerina Kamila Quinones Ruiz were shot at 1/4000 of a second at 2000iso using the electronic shutter feature with the 135mm Plena. The reason for these choices is that the electronic shutter is soundless, so the subject is unaware that an image is being captured and what I get is the absolute spontaneous response, 1/4000 of second afforded me the ability to record the moment from eyes closed to open and capture the lack of registration that I was pointing a camera at my subject. The Plena was chosen because of the way the lens handles tack sharp at f1.8 to smooth and creamy Bokeh. 2000iso is what allowed 1/4000 of second to happen with the available light of the moment.

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 105mm f 1.4. Arguably the best lens Nikon has ever made. Certainly the best lens I have ever shot with.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

This image was shot insde an inclosed market, the only light is sunlight coming through a few partially opened slats. The fruit vendorr is lost in thought. That is the moment that took me, the remberace of the moment that he is lost in and is taking him.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

This is a "cleaning out my storage found a box of negatives I thought were some place else Sunday" imagine. I had the opportunity to photograph Ryan towards the beginning of his career. One of the nicest, down to earth people I have ever shot in Hollywood.

This image was captured with a Nikon F5 camera with a 70-210mm D-series lens. Film was Ilford HP5 rated at 200iso. Film was scanned using an Epson V750 scanner and Silverfast scanning software. Post processing was done in Photoshop. Lighting was with a thermonuclear device and a 30" Westcott Sunlight reflector.

Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection and Silver efex 7.

hia is the black and white version.

There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them.

From my latest trip to Cuba…..

I love ballet. When was in undergraduate & graduate school I did bleat or or some form of movement class 3 hours day. I was never ver technically good at it, but if passion was the driver then I was….. ‘noun sad. I love ballet. What is truly amazing to me is the absolute without any thought of it technical perfection of the pirouette from the “are you ready?” look to “you better be ready because here I go” look to the blissed out smile mid twirl to the end landing walking away with “attitude”

Cuban Ballet dancers are the bees knees of perfection.

This is the ballerina Kamila Quinones Ruiz

The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 50mm f1.2 lensa. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

There is a market I have ben going to for the past several years where the stall owners have given up an slow sorta look forward to me photographing them. Needless to say I have bought a lot of produce that I give a way along my walks through Havana... This image is of the only bean counter I look forward to seeing...

I fall in love a 1000 times a day usually for about a 125th of a sec. I don't believe in long relationships or long exposures.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 105mm f 1,4 lens. To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.
