The universe of succulent plants is full of playful elements and figures that take us to realms other than the vegetable. This is the case of the succulent bear paw, the star of today's post, whose scientific name is Cotyledon tomentosa. Previously, I had already presented other plants that also look like a stuffed animal. Interestingly, in all cases, it is not necessary to use a lot of imagination to actually see these anatomical details in plants.
Abroad, the succulent bear paw receives the same nickname, bear's paw. Whenever we find a plant with the term tomentosa in its scientific name, such as Cotyledon tomentosa, we can be sure that it is a hairy plant. This is because the term is derived from the word tomentum, which in Latin means wool or fur.
Here in the gallery, I have already posted photographs of other examples of succulent plants that have their leaves covered with hair, such as Echeveria pulvinata, with smaller and more delicate hairs, capable of giving a velvety appearance to the plant.
Technically, the hairs that cover the leaves of the succulent bear paw, as well as the other examples mentioned above, are called trichomes. These structures are modifications of the plant tissue, whose objective is to reduce the loss of water through evaporation, in arid environments and under full sun, to which these succulents are adapted.
The species Cotyledon tomentosa is originally from the African continent, occurring more specifically in the region of South Africa.
Although the bear paw is often sold in small pots as young seedlings, it can grow to a larger, shrubby size when well cultivated. The species Cotyledon tomentosa usually presents between 30 and 70 cm in height, in its original habitat. Over time, its stems will branch out, giving the plant the appearance of a small shrub.
As if the photo format of its leaves were not enough, the succulent bear paw is even better with the reddish finish at the ends of these structures, which resemble painted nails. This color becomes more evident when the plant is grown in bright places. It is also under these growing conditions that the bear paw can flower, typically in spring, producing inflorescences bearing orange bell-shaped flowers, with the typical appearance of blooms presented by representatives of the genus Cotyledon. It is interesting to note that even the stems, flowers and flower buds of Cotyledon tomentosa have delicate trichomes on their surface. The plant is all hairy.
The bear paw is a very versatile succulent. It can be grown outdoors in full sun, making it perfect in desert-inspired rock gardens. In addition, this plant works well in pots, whether plastic or terracotta, as long as the frequency of watering is adjusted according to the material chosen.
Clay pots, for being more porous, allow the soil inside them to dry more quickly. On the other hand, the plastic pot tends to retain moisture for a longer time, so the watering should be more spaced when this material is used. The succulent bear paw is able to store a lot of water in its leaves, so watering doesn't have to be frequent. Regardless of the number of times a week, the important thing is that watering only takes place when the land is very dry. Excess water in the roots of Cotyledon tomentosa causes its decay, leading the plant to death in a short period of time.
Although it is difficult to resist the charms of this succulent treat, it should be noted that the bear paw is a toxic plant if it is inadvertently ingested by children or pets. As their appearance is harmless and cute, the risk of accidents is even greater. However, when cultivated in places beyond the reach of these curious little ones, the succulent bear paw makes a cute show. Whenever I see it, I want to squeeze its plump, furry leaves.

Among the muscle cars, I consider the 'Cuda (full name is Plymouth Barracuda) as one of the rarest because it was only produced for 10 years (1964 - 1974). My favorite version is the "Hemi" 'Cuda, which, under the hood, has the 7.0L Hemispherical V8 producing 425HP. Here, however, we have its little brother, the 440 Cuda that runs on a 7.2 V8 that delivers 390HP to the wheels. The interesting fact about this one is that its purple color is not a modern paint job. The 1971 'Cuda was released with very unique options like special decal sets, hood modifications and several "high impact" colors like this "in-violet". I will say that the Cuda, with its big engine and unusual colors, is quite the head-turner muscle car!

TSS Duke of Lancaster is a former railway steamer passenger ship that operated in Europe from 1956 to 1979, and is beached at Llannerch-y-Mor Wharf near Mostyn Docks, on the River Dee, in north Wales. She replaced an earlier 3,600-ton ship of the same name operated by the London Midland and Scottish Railway company between Heysham and Belfast.
Along with her sister ships the TSS Duke of Rothesay and the TSS Duke of Argyll, she was amongst the last passenger-only steamers built for British Railways.
From the mid-1960s, passenger ships such as Duke of Lancaster were gradually being superseded by car ferries. Rather than undertake the expensive option of renewing their entire fleet, British Railways instead began a part-programme of conversion. In order to maintain ferry services whilst these modifications took place, Duke of Lancaster's duties as a cruise ship ceased.. On 25 April 1970 the ship returned to service, having had her main deck rebuilt to accommodate vehicles via a rear door at her stern. The ship now provided space for 1,200 single-class passengers and 105 cars, with a total cabin accommodation for 400 passengers

The Tomb of Sheikh Mahmoud Khivi is located near Astara in Gilan ostan (province) - Iran , from Ilkhanid period / 14th century. This stone tomb, with itps beautiful carvings, represents Islamic and Persian architecture from various periods. The structure features a two-layer dome, with the outer dome being destroyed and later modifications added. It is likely that the outer dome was originally pyramid-shaped with four sides, while the inner dome remains circular.
He was one of the Persian religious figures and mystics of the 13th century AD.
The tomb is situated in a forest environment, surrounded by ancient trees on one side and rice paddies on the other. This natural setting adds to the tomb’s appeal, making it not only a place of pilgrimage but also a popular spot for tourists.

Dr. Okabe's project originated in a dare: "How sour can you make a lemon through genetic modification?"
The result was a giant sentient lemon than complained endlessly about everything. Okabe thought it would be funny to send the lemon to the executive office. They were not amused and sent it to the kitchen.
On Friday, there was a suspiciously large container of free lemonade in the cafeteria. Coincidence?
Experiment: FAILED.

The Deer Isle Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning Eggemoggin Reach in the state of Maine. The bridge is the only vehicular connection from the Maine mainland to Little Deer Isle, one of the segments that make up the island. The span was completed in March 1939 with a main span of 1,088 feet (332 m). The bridge was designed by Holton Duncan Robinson and David Bernard Steinman. It encountered wind stability problems that were similar to those of the Whitestone Bridge and the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which collapsed shortly after it opened. The problems led to modifications which included numerous cable stays connecting cables to the tower and tower to the deck. The span today carries two narrow lanes of State Route 15.
The Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge, named for the two townships it connects, was the first bridge built between Deer Isle and the mainland, replacing an inadequate ferry crossing system and effectively opening the island to tourism opportunities. It is notable for the innovation of its designers and contractors in creating a durable, long-span, high-level structure across a navigable arm of the Atlantic at minimal cost. Unprecedented use of prefabricated and previously used materials simplified construction and minimized costs, and much of the outdoor work was completed under poor weather conditions.

The official name for this royal opera is: "Sächsische Staatsoper". After the original opera was destroyed by a fire in 1869, followed by the bombings in 1945, attempts were made to restore it between 1952 and 1956. It was only in 1985, after several modifications, that it became what it once was in 1841. You can find this impressive building on Theater Square in the historic center of Dresden.

It would not have been a trip to Chicago without trying to see Metra's brand new SD70's. These beautiful locomotives are rebuilt for passenger service, with special modifications for Metra's needs. The light at CP Morgan was fantastic for the afternoon rush, and listening to these beasts notch up hauling hotshot commuter trains out of town was awesome. A quick 15 minute walk from my hotel to the Milwaukee lines out of Chicago Union was definitely a nice treat.

J. Pierce Cunningham Cabin
Grand Teton National Park, WY
06-12-24
From the Grand Teton website: The Cunningham Cabin stands as one of the valley’s few remaining structures from the homesteading era when settlers filed nearly 400 claims in Jackson Hole. In the 1880s, John and Margaret Cunningham staked a claim for the Bar Flying U Ranch. Cunningham built his cabin in 1888 in the Appalachian style, commonly called “double-pen” or “dog-trot.” John lived in the cabin until 1895 when he finished his main residence, and it later became a smithy and barn.
The Teton range is really farther away than shown. I did some modification such as if I'd used the telephoto on the range, but wanted the cabin window in focus. Thus I used two layers of the same photo, and enlarged the mountain peaks so they look closer.
I also did some more tweaking, so the "border" around the window is dark and not splashed with color as in a standard HDR shot which removes shadows. I also digitally removed two tourists on the path. I was going to replace them with buffalo but thought that might be going too far. LOL. Also added a blur filter to the clouds only so they didn't look too sharp.
Still, what a view!

Compared to its predecessor, the exterior of the 1929 Cadillac was little changed. Parking lamps were moved from the cowl to the tops of the fenders—a subtle modification providing a bit sportier look. Significant changes took place under the sheet metal. Most important was a new “clashless” Synchro-Mesh Silent-Shift transmission, negating the need for double-clutching while also enabling much smoother gear selection. New mechanical four-wheel brakes required considerably less pedal pressure than earlier models, and shatterproof Security Plate glass became standard in all windows. The suspension system featured new double-acting Delco shock absorbers, and the finely upholstered fully adjustable seats became standard.

Ok, modifications have been made :)
I quite like it now actually lol
Yes I left the part where the stock and grip connect unblended on purpose, it looked odd blended.
10 years ago I went to a cinq à sept to abuse the free drinks. It preceded a presentation by a man with an ear surgically implanted on his arm.
I was casually chatting with the ear-man when some local body modification fiends stormed the event and demanded he show the goods. “Show us the FUCKING EARR!!” their leader shouted. Ear-man politely declined. The leader grabbed his arm, ripped down his sleeve and held the arm up for all of the mortified, bookish crowd to see. Cool move.
This summer I ran into the leader buying a banh mi. He didn’t remember the incident.

Last night I had a vivid dream about childhood.
A group of females were working on a modification to my car.
One had small parts laid out carefully and Oski came bounding in and I thought he might send them flying.
I spoke at length with one woman about our child selves in adulthood and as I looked across the way I could see my eldest son Joseph as a younger child joyfully climbing a tree.
Later another woman appeared and joined in the conversation and though I don't know who she was in my waking life, in my dream I knew her as my wife.
