PORTSMOUTH, Va. (June 17, 2014) – Construction of approximately 4,100 linear feet of shoreline protection along the western shore of Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area, or CIDMMA, is progressing smoothly as Corps contractor Coastal Design and Construction, Inc. completes construction of 11 riprap breakwaters to replace the existing (randomly placed) concrete rubble.

The concrete rubble, remnants of the old James River Bridge, did not provide adequate means of shoreline protection.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District, is managing the project, which includes creating vegetated wetlands behind the breakwaters for habitat and added shoreline protection. Coastal Design and Construction, Inc., based in Gloucester, Va., is an 8a small business company.

The shoreline protection project is funded through a combination of Corps Operations and Maintenance and Sandy Flood Control and Coastal Emergency Funds.

CIDMMA is a 2,500-acre artificial confined dredged material disposal site. Plans for the site were developed in the early 1940s to provide a long-term disposal area for material dredged from the channels and ports in the Hampton Roads area. Hampton Roads, including the ports of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Newport News, and Hampton, comprises Virginia’s largest port complex.

CIDMMA was recommended and approved by Congress under the River and Harbor Act of 1946. Actual construction of Craney Island was completed in 1957. Since that time, this site has received maintenance, private and permit-dredged material from numerous dredging projects in the Hampton Roads area. (U.S. Army photo/Gerald Rogers)

Shahani’s group is working to map out the process of creating spiral structures in materials. This could lead to a wide range of new applications in optical and mechanical applications.

First test materials with Fstorm Render

A new Tennessee material I have found and as of yet have not named. This is a seam replacement of a layer of fossils that has been agatised, as I say for as lack of a more geologicaly correct term. Ranges from opaque to very translucent and contains lots of coral and bivalves. Variable material that quite often has pinholes in it when polished. There seems to be pockets of some sort of soft material, especially in some of the coral, that disolves as you polish and cut. When you do get a solid piece the detail of the fossil remnants is quite striking and it makes am interesting but not beautifull cutting material. I have never seen anything like it before and it is another stone I will be marketing in the near future. If you are a staff member at a university and desire a piece, send me an email and we will talk about it. I just want to make sure you really are what you say you are is all.

I live in Bath with my artist/writer husband.

I make bespoke textile, bead and button jewellery. I work with a mixture of reclaimed materials and offcuts of cloth, beads/buttons etc. I firmly believe in the recycled art movement and I am inspired by modern art and contemporary and vintage fashion.

My recent collections are made of a mixture of textiles, including silk, small beads and buttons, and braids from India and other far eastern countries, some modern and other vintage.

I accept commissions and attend craft fairs. Contact me for further information at susan.margaret.baker1@gmail.com

I sell my work locally in Bath, Bristol, Wiltshire, Somerset and South Gloucestershire through craft fairs and local arts festivals. My work is also available through Lauren Shanley's Fashion and textile Gallery in the OXO Tower London. www.laurenshanley.co.uk/

• Object: Coat of arms

• Place of origin: Florence (made)

• Date: early 16th century (made)

• Artist/Maker: della Robbia (workshop, maker)

• Materials and Techniques: Polychrome, enamelled terracotta

• Museum number: 7397A-1860

• Gallery location: Medieval and Renaissance, room 50a

Physical description: Within a rectangular recess frame at the top and sides with egg-and-dart moulding is set a Tusacan shield bearing the charge: Barry nubuly gules and or. On either side of the inner frame is a painted bramble or thorn. The lower sides are ornamented with a pattern of flowers and leaves; between them runs the inscription: SIMONETTO.DI/CHORSO.DALL/ARENA.PodestA.M.D.XII. The face is enamelled in white, yellow, blue and black, part of the shield being left unglazed (presumably for painting in red).

This stemma or shield of arms is made by the workshop of the Della Robbia, in Florence in the early 16th century.

The relief is composed of fragments from two separate works. The upper part carries the arms of the Spini family (a Tuscan shield bearing the charge: Barry nebuly gules and or), and the lower part an inscription with the name of Simonetto di Corso and the date 1512.

The Della Robbia family was an Italian family of sculptors and potters. They were active in Florence from the early 15th century and elsewhere in Italy and France well into the 16th. Family members were traditionally employed in the textile industry, and their name derives from rubia tinctorum, a red dye.

Luca della Robbia founded the family sculpture workshop in Florence and was regarded by contemporaries as a leading artistic innovator, comparable to Donatello and Masaccio. The influence of antique art and his characteristic liveliness and charm are evident in such works as the marble singing-gallery for Florence Cathedral. He is credited with the invention of the tin-glazed terracotta sculpture for which the family became well known.

The material used in the construction of a building has a lot to do with how long it’s going to last. Some materials (such as, stone), as you can imagine, make sturdier structures, but have other disadvantages.

For example, wood is a very common material used in construction; but a house made primarily of wood will likely fall apart in nearly 50 years (or much faster, depending on the ambient temperature and climate). Similarly, a concrete structure would last anywhere between 50-100 years while a stone building may last more than a century.

I created this card for Hero Arts June2012B Challenge, Daniel's WSW12 Material Whirl Challenge, and Neysa's WSW12 Birds of a Feather Challenge. I had forgotten that Neysa did not want us to combine her challenge with other challenges... so I am posting it to Neysa's challenge, so others can see it, but it will not count toward Neysa's challenge or RAK. (Sorry, Neysa!)

To create this card, I started with a piece of Sticky-Back Canvas by Claudine Hellmuth for Ranger. I used a blending tool and foam to apply Shabby Shutters Distress Ink all over the surface. Then I stamped a peacock from Hero Arts CL447 Beautiful Peacocks using Ranger Archival Ink in black.

My stamped impression did not work so well on the canvas, so I used a Micron permanent ink pen to trace over the lines that did not stamp well. Then I used washable Crayola markers to color in the peacock. I added Turquoise Stickles glitter glue to the peacock feathers as an accent, and set it aside to dry.

The background is a patterned paper called Teachers Lounge from Basic Grey's Recess collection. I stamped a feather from the same Hero Arts stamp set and the "thinking of you" sentiment from Hero Arts CL140 Thinking of You Messages using Tsukineko VersaMark watermark ink. Then I heat embossed it with Ranger turquoise embossing powder.

Next I die cut and dry embossed a turquoise matte using Spellbinders Nestabilities Labels Three in my Cuttlebug. Once the Stickles glitter glue was dry, I peeled the backing from the Sticky-Back Canvas and adhered it to the matte. Then I adhered the focal panel off-center on the card base using foam squares for dimension.

Thanks for looking! :-)
