MTV Design Stage

LAVA designed the ‘MTV’ installation specifically for the MTV Awards 2009. Suspended in the Sydney Convention Centre, spanning 35m to 24m, the sculpture provides an intense visual environment for the global TV show.
The installation was fast tracked (5 weeks, 3 hours to install on site) to meet open for the MTV Awards Ceremony 2009 that was televised to an audience of millions around the globe.
MTV Design Stage is a digital design, derived from nature, realized in lightweight fabric, using the latest digital fabrication and engineering techniques, to create more with less. Comprised of 108m3 of space is enclosed within a minimal surface area of 568m2 and uses only (568m2*0.2kg/m2=113.6kg) of lightweight material.
Works by Graphic Designer TOKO and programmer/animator Robyn Pyon we developed graphics that could projected according to each musical performance as well as creating an overall atmosphere.
Tensile Membrane Company Mak Max, the engineers and fabricators of the sculpture have developed a unique workflow from digital design to Digital Fabrication of complex shapes.

What could the materials of the future look like? New ones used in manufacturing must fulfil a wide range of conditions and meet ecological standards depending on their area of application. Today we are conducting research on intelligent (synthetic) fabrics or dreaming of materials that know our needs and adapt to changing situations and circumstances. And of course, familiar materials can also be rediscovered through innovative approaches and processing methods.

The Japanese are generally so positive that there are few swear words, and avoidance of negative subjects like those dealt with here. At the same time, scholars of tourism point out that dark tourism, to sites related to negative things, are big business and may also have positive (and negative) ethical outcomes. While there are haunted spots, and Hiroshima and Nagasaki are two of the biggest tourist destinations in Japan, few of my students would think of showing a foreign tourist to a dark tourism spot, perhaps for the same reason that Americans tend not to be self critical. Additionally the word Tourism in Japanese (kankou) originates in the practice of showing the highlights of ones region - kankou means literally "see or show the lights".
But when there is money to be made they may be prepared to go dark, and Japan could become a dark tourism Mecca. There are so many sites that are completely un-tapped.
