On February 21, 1952 Police opened fire on a student demonstration in Dhaka demanding Bangla to be one of the national languages of the then Pakistan. A number of students of Dhaka University laid down their lives in that shooting and thus creating a unique event in the annals of History. Never before has any one laid down their lives for recognition of their mother tongue!
This event is observed throughout Bangladesh and in Dhaka it begins with laying of floral wreaths starting from midnight followed by early morning barefoot procession towards the Central Shaheed Minar located near Dhaka Medical College Hospital (the location where the students were shot and killed).
Its observance was also formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution in 2008 establishing as the International Year of Languages!

As you descend into the the Changathang from the Thanglangla pass, you barely meet anyone on the road. At the foot of the mountain pass lies the valley broad, dry and dusty and again not a soul to be seen.
While trying to locate a suitable nomad encampment called a "Reebo" in Ladakhi language, one could see a trail of goats and sheep walking the dry and dusty valley in the far distance. After trailing this herd for some time, we managed to find the nomad up ahead looking sinister and imposing even in that wide wide expanse. He wanted only a cigarette.
He holds in his left hand the skin of a changathangi goat the hair from which goes into making cashmere/pashmina.
The only thing that is unpredictable in a scenario like this is the nomad dog. The dogs still had the winter coat and looked huge and calm and not aggressive. At least not the one that was next to the nomad.
As we drove off after the brief exchange of cigarettes, photographs and a demo of how the blade works, one of the dogs guarding the other flank of the herd charged the vehicle at full throttle. Mercifully passengers were inside the moving vehicle. It was an awesome sight to see the canine at full tilt and I was wondering if he will hurt himself if he smashes into the bodywork of the Indian SUV. He did not. He snarled a mean good bye.

Budapest is the capital and most populous city of Hungary. It is the tenth-largest city in the European Union by population within city limits and the second-largest city on the river Danube. The history of Budapest began when an early Celtic settlement transformed into the Roman town of Aquincum, the capital of Lower Pannonia. Re-established Buda became one of the centres of Renaissance humanist culture by the 15th century. The Battle of Mohács, in 1526, was followed by nearly 150 years of Ottoman rule. After the reconquest of Buda in 1686, the region entered a new age of prosperity, with Pest-Buda becoming a global city after the unification of Buda, Óbuda and Pest on 17 November 1873, with the name 'Budapest' given to the new capital. Budapest also became the co-capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a great power that dissolved in 1918, following World War I. The city was the focal point of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and the Battle of Budapest in 1945, as well as the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
Budapest is a global city with strengths in commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. Budapest is Hungary's financial centre. Budapest hosts the headquarters of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, the European Police College and the first foreign office of the China Investment Promotion Agency. Over 40 colleges and universities are located in Budapest, including Eötvös Loránd University, Corvinus University, Semmelweis University, University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Opened in 1896, the city's subway system, the Budapest Metro, serves 1.27 million, while the Budapest Tram Network serves 1.08 million passengers daily.
The central area of Budapest along the Danube is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has several notable monuments of classical architecture, including the Hungarian Parliament and the Buda Castle. The city also has around 80 geothermal springs, the largest thermal water cave system, second largest synagogue, and third largest Parliament building in the world. Budapest attracts around 12 million international tourists per year, making it a highly popular destination in Europe.

I spent more time in Vietnam than any other country I visited in Southeast Asia because I found the country fascinating, photogenic and frustrating.
Let’s focus on the photogenic part.
Mui Ne is not only known for its amazing coastline, but also for its rich red sand dunes. The coastal charms of Mui Ne was a direct contrast to the motorbike filled concrete jungle of Saigon.
In Mui Ne I enjoyed great weather, great beaches and the photogenic sand dunes. You can read about how I captured this scene from this previous post Good Morning Vietnam!

An old lady sat right in front of me, by a window side of a train compartment. She wore aristocracy like no other; around 75-80 years old, travelling alone from Kolkata. Her son would receive her from the station. She was communicating with her son over the cell phone. She was on the edge of her mood, at times relaxed and sometimes fidgety, as the train was running late. She was an expressive woman, as her gestures reflected her mood. She was ignorant about everything happening in the compartment, as she was eager to reach the station on time. I took a few shots of her gestures with my cell phone camera, secretly. They turned out to be pretty productive, as natural documentation of one’s body languages.

Lovers of wilderness and solitude perfer to scale the hill from the Phewa lake as the journey goes through dense forest accompanied by songs of birds and circkets.On reaching the top of the hill, eye soothing view of Mount Annapurna and Fistail, Phewa lake,unending landscapes and green lush forest magnetises the visitors.Towering Pagoda style Peace stupa, and its surrounding garden,like its name fills the visitors with spiritual ecstasy and jubilant mood.The stupa is not just a Buddhist pilgrimage but also a palce for Hindus to worship that why it also exihibits quintessence of religious tolarance in Nepal.

Laos is blessed with some of Asia’s nicest rivers, and many of them are mellow. Children spent the day at school, and by the afternoon they were doing the chores required of them…building a fire for the kitchen, sweeping the leaves into a pile, or caring for the young siblings strapped to their back …young boys and girls from the age of seven or eight attentive to the baby’s every need. Amongst this was the laughter of children playing in the river. But sometimes they skip their days at school, going fishing and collecting snails from the river, or using long bamboo poles to knock crickets from the trees. They eat the crickets live or drop them into bottles and take them home for lunch or dinner.

These ragged little urchins spend most of their days not at school, but fishing and collecting snails from the river. School is important for ethnic minority kids, they should attend and complete primary education in order to overcome rural/urban, ethnic in the area of literacy and education. But it isn't that easy. The reason to skip school are the family economic considerations, involvement in family maintenance and subsistence tasks, the lack of perceived benefits from education. While poverty and lack of access are issues. In addition to these, ethnic minority kids have to face further barriers to education, including the distance from school facilities, their extreme poverty, and additional cultural barriers and the lack of fluency in the national language, Lao. The ethnic kids speak their own language. About 32% of all Laotians are related to Ethnic groups. Totally 160 ethnic groups and speak 82 distinct living languages.
...an old lady washing her clothes in the river gave us a beautiful smile; the Laos people are so friendly. Kids have a great time running on the rampart, swimming in the Sexet river at the Tad Lo waterfall, taking boat rides along the river and playing. A bit futher south men washing their elephants in the river. Lao seems a bit like heaven, the laughter is often & sincere, the rivers are cool and clean and not a speck of modern civilization in sight. In my perspective it is some of the best Laos can offer.
