"Worst of all, violence against women and girls continues unabated in every continent, country and culture. It takes a devastating toll on women’s lives, on their families and on society as a whole. Most societies prohibit such violence -- yet the reality is that, too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned." (UN SECRETARY-GENERAL in International Women’s Day 2007 Message.)
“Almost every country in the world still has laws that discriminate against women, and promises to remedy this have not been kept.” (UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the eve of International Women's Day 2008)
According to one United Nations estimate, 113 to 200 million women are “demographically missing” from the world today. That is to say, there should be 113 to 200 million more women walking the earth, who aren’t. By that same estimate, 1.5 to 3 million women and girls lose their lives every year because of gender-based neglect or gender-based violence and Sexual Violence in Conflict.
In addition to torture, sexual violence and rape by occupation forces, a great number of women and girls are kept locked up in their homes by a very real fear of abduction and criminal abuse. In war and conflicts, girls and women have been denied their human right, including the right to health, education and employment. “Sexual violence in conflict zones is indeed a security concern. We affirm that sexual violence profoundly affects not only the health and safety of women, but the economic and social stability of their nations” –US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, 19 June 2008 (Read more about UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict www.stoprapenow.org/ ).
Millions of young women disappear in their native land every year. Many of them are found later being held against their will in other places and forced into prostitution. According to the UNICEF ( www.unicef.org/gender/index_factsandfigures.html ),Girls between 13 and 18 years of age constitute the largest group in the sex industry. It is estimated that around 500,000 girls below 18 are victims of trafficking each year. The victims of trafficking and female migrants are sometimes unfairly blamed for spreading HIV when the reality is that they are often the victims.
According to the UNAIDS around 17.3 million, women (almost half of the total number of HIV-positive) living with HIV ( www.unaids.org ). While HIV is often driven by poverty, it is also associated with inequality, gender-based abuses and economic transition. The relationship between abuses of women's rights and their vulnerability to AIDS is alarming. Violence and discrimination prevents women from freely accessing HIV/AIDS information, from negotiating condom use, and from resisting unprotected sex with an HIV-positive partner, yet most of the governments have failed to take any meaningful steps to prevent and punish such abuse.
United Nations agencies estimated that every year 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing the procedure – which involves the partial or total removal of external female genital organs – that some 140 million women, mostly in Asia, the Middle East and in Africa, have already endured.
We can point a finger at poverty. But poverty alone does not result in these girls and women’s deaths and suffering; the blame also falls on the social system and attitudes of the societies.
India alone accounts for more than 50 million of the women who are “missing” due to female foeticide - the sex-selective abortion of girls, dowry death, gender-based neglect and all forms of violence against women.
Since the late 1970s when the technology for sex determination first came into being, sex selective abortion has unleashed a saga of horror in India. Experts are calling it "sanitized barbarism”. The 2001 Census conducted by Government of India, showed a sharp decline in the child sex ratio in 80% districts of India. In some parts of the country, the sex ratio of girls to boys has dropped to less than 800:1,000.
It's alarming that even liberal states like those in the northeast have taken to disposing of girls. Worryingly, the trend is far stronger in urban rather than rural areas, and among literate rather than illiterate women, exploding the myth that growing affluence and spread of basic education alone will result in the erosion of gender bias. The United Nations has expressed serious concern about the situation.
Over the years, laws have been made stricter and the punishment too is more stringent now. But since many people manage to evade punishment, others too feel inclined to take the risk. Just look at the way sex-determination tests go on despite a stiff ban on them. Only if the message goes out loud and clear that nobody who dares to snuff out the life of a female foetus would escape effective legal system would the practice end. It is only by a combination of monitoring, education, socio-cultural campaigns, and effective legal implementation that the deep-seated attitudes and practices against women and girls can be eroded.
The decline in the sex ratio and the millions of Missing Women are indicators of the feudal patriarchal resurgence. Violence against women has gone public – whether it is dowry murders, the practice of female genital mutilation, honour killings, sex selective abortions or death sentences awarded to young lovers from different communities by caste councils, rapes and killings in communal and caste violence, it is only women’s and human rights groups who are protesting – the public and institutional response to these trends is very minimal.
Millions of women suffer from discrimination in the world of work. This not only violates a most basic human right, but has wider social and economic consequences. Most of the governments turn a blind eye to illegal practices and enact and enforce discriminatory laws. Corporations and private individuals engage in abusive and sexist practices without fear of legal system.
More women are working now than ever before, but they are also more likely than men to get low-productivity, low-paid and vulnerable jobs, with no social protection, basic rights nor voice at work according to a new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) issued for International Women’s Day 2008. Are we even half way to meeting the eight Millennium Development Goals?

I visited some schools, where Portuguese language was being learnt. It was a follow-up. We introduced ourselves, and so did the children. Sometimes they felt a little intimidated,or gave me a smile...
much about the places i traveled in west africa was unfamiliar to me...the dress, the language, the food, the religions, the customs. but one of the things i love about travel is no matter how far away, we are able to see common threads in people across the world.
the two similarities most striking to me were the way children play, and the way mothers respond when their babies are crying.
this little boy, while chasing after siblings, had fallen and landed face first in a pile of sand and gravel. his mom kissed him so much that the majority of the sand wound up on her own face. no idea the words she was saying to him, but the sentiments communicated beautifully.

Rural indonesia
Bali (Indonesia) - It just rained and I took refuge in a palm grove. After the downpour, the sun returns immediately, as it often does in Asia. I resume my journey and a kilometer further, I come across a landscape to die for.
Back then, I still photographed landscapes without human presence. I stop on the side of the road which overlooks terraced crops.
A few photos later I am about to leave when I see this man quietly ascending below.
I give him a little sign as a "hello" to which he responds. When he gets to my height, jej take this photo. We speak for a few moments without really understanding each other, each in their own language. But the current is visibly flowing.
For this photo, I did not respect the classic composition by placing the subject practically in the center of the image because I wanted to integrate a piece of rice field that can be seen in the background on the right of the image. This portrait would have been less interesting without its environment. And then the two baskets filled with grass rebalance the whole.

As a photographer, it is hard to pass on the allure of an abandoned building. There is something about their rustic nature that renders well in photographs, particularly in a rural setting. Since moving to NW Arkansas, I have noticed that the region's rapid suburbanization has led to quite a few old abandoned agricultural structures. Usually, they are a bit hard to shoot due to their location, but recently on a trip to Boxley Valley historic district, we found many abandoned structures that were part of old homesteads.
I reached the site of this building quite late, well after the setting sun has put the structure in deep shade. Due to their protected nature, accessibility was limited, and I could not figure out a better composition. But the building and eerie nature of the woods were too good to pass up. I decided on a more straightforward composition and processed the image with cooler tones.
Towering above the other monuments of Bagan, the magnificence in white which is the Thatbyinnyu takes its name from the Omniscience of the Buddha. Thatbyinnyutanyan in Myanmar language, Sabbannutanana in Pali, omniscience is given further explanation in contemporary inscriptions as "knowing thoroughly and seeing widely." Built by King Alaungsithu (1113-1163), the Thatbyinnyu is a transitional temple, standing between the Early Style of the Ananda, half a mile to the northeast, and the Late Style of the Gawdawpalin, half a mile to the northwest. It is one of the earliest double-storeyed temples, but the arrangement is different from that of later double-storeyed temples, much as if it were still an experiment in the new form. The plan of the Thatbyinnyu is not unlike that of the Ananda-square, with porticoes on all four sides-but the eastern portico projects further than the others, breaking the symmetry. This plan is followed in such later temples as the Sulamani and the Gawdawpalin.
Three receding terraces rise above each storey, ornamented with crenellated parapets and corner stupas. Above the terraces of the upper storey rises a curvilinear spire, surmounted by a slim, tapering stupa which takes the temple up to a height of 201 feet. The great height of the temple and the vertical lines of the ornamental features-the plain pilasters, the flame-like arch pediments, the corner stupas-give a soaring effect to the Thatbyinnyu.

Rovingian Council - Rovingian Council - Exploring the Universal Language of Symbols and Forms by Daniel Arrhakis (2026)
Exploring the Universal Language of Symbols and Forms (I)
Introduction to the Rovingian Quest: The Language of Silence
Rovingian nomadic monks are known for their dedication to the quest for sacred symbols and geometries, transcending the boundaries of traditional ritualistic patterns. For these monks, the spiritual world does not express itself through alphabetic languages, whether spoken or written. Instead, they believe that spiritual communication manifests itself through a visual language composed of geometric forms and patterns that are incorporated into the very structure of Nature and the Universe.
The Language of Silence
By rejecting spoken languages, Rovingians aim to eliminate cultural and mental barriers, seeking a direct and intuitive connection with the cosmos. This connection is achieved through the study and contemplation of sacred geometries, symbols, and ritualistic patterns. Thus, they pave the way for silent communication, a truly profound visual language that allows for a dialogue with the universe without the limitations of words.
The Visual Language: While words vary and disappear over time, the ways in which the triangle or spiral maintains mathematical meaning anywhere in the universe highlight its universal and timeless value.
The Geometric Source Code of the Universe
Rovingians believe that the universe is governed by a fundamental geometric code. Understanding this code allows one to unravel the hidden order of reality. For them, studying sacred geometry is a way to reconnect with the cosmos, treating nature as a true living temple, and the universe as a symbolic book, open to interpretation.
The Living Temple: For the monks, the world does not contain temples; the world is the temple itself. Natural elements, such as a nautilus shell or a quartz crystal, are seen as sacred scriptures. For example, the quartz crystal is not just a mineral, but a geometric lesson on order, clarity, and repetition.

Explorando a Linguagem Universal dos Símbolos e Formas (I)
Introdução à Busca Rovingiana: A Linguagem do Silêncio
A Linguagem do Silêncio
O Código-Fonte Geométrico do Universo
