The lovely owner first thought that I was sketching into one of their antique books. The wife of the man up the ladder was pleased that I drew him slimmer!
Drawn with the Karlsruhe Urban Sketchers.
My exhibition in the main cemetery info center gallery finishes on Saturday.
I couldn’t believe it when I drew it, but I had to confirm what I saw afterwards, online. In 1971 a main road was built through the castle buildings.
As I sat down to sketch the building, a cat and a flock of chickens walked out of the door. I prefer not to draw animals as it can look a bit twee, but they were there so I had to. At one point I was surrounded by pecking chickens. I only managed to sketch two of them, they’re too quick for me.
This is the typical view of the town. It’s tricky not to fall into tourist trap views in such a historic town.

Today I learned octopuses will punch fish for no reason.
Kind of a dick move.
I walked a while to get a good view, sat on my stool and noticed I’d left my sketchbook in the car.

Difficult drawing all these curves in perspective and standing up. No cameras or mobiles were allowed in the museum but sketchbooks are ok.
I hope these walls and sculptures will be saved when the rest of the building gets demolished. There’re barriers around these walls because bits of the sculpture are dropping off.
I’ll be selling my work at Wunder - Design- und Kunstmarkt at Die Stadtmitte in Karlsruhe on 25th November, come round for a chat.
While waiting in my car today for an appointment that my wife had, I decided to use my time by sketching what was around me. I was in the downtown Hull section of Gatineau, Quebec, and didn't have much to choose from. It was either the facade of what seemed to be a church or this street scene. What really inspired me to make this small sketch was the glorious November sun with the long and dark shadows it cast. It was a nice challenge for a black and white sketch. While I didn't complete it in my car, I got all of the pencil sketching done and had begun inking it. I then took a photo reference and completed it quickly at home. This reinforced the idea for me that you don't need lots of time or a jaw-dropping vista to create something interesting.
The paper maker offered to pose but I managed ok. A passing artist said he has also drawn the papermaker.
One young lad came up and said the sketch needed a fat belly! So I let him draw one, but in the back of my sketchbook.
This series of images began when I was captivated by some of the "Illustrative" techniques used by Richard Gregory. Richard kindly gave me some tips and here are some experimental images based on the Bruges Canal shot which I posted yesterday. Thanks, Richard. None of them look like yours but I did get one quite close for a while. Then I became interested in getting an engraving type effect, mono and tinted. These are the three results. Thanks again, RichardGregory48.
