The owner of the boat on the left told me he bought it in the Netherlands and sailed it here. It was built in 1928 and he’s converting it into a house boat.

The mother and daughter were asked if they’d like to pose for a sketch.

My wife persuaded me to draw this. I think she wanted to read her book at this idylic spot.

The lovely owner first thought that I was sketching into one of their antique books. The wife of the man up the ladder was pleased that I drew him slimmer!

The STIHL service man come over for a look at the sketch and a chat. He’s been retired for a long time but he loves repairing classic chainsaws and still has the spares for them.

Today while I was waiting for the garage to install my new winter tires, I took a walk down to the Ottawa River. It was a pleasant day for a leisurely walk with a temperature of 15 C and a near cloudless sky. I brought along a small sketchbook and found a good spot to spend almost two hours of drawing. I've sketched here on other occasions and have always enjoyed the view. From my vantage point, I could see a small lookout over the water which is named Quai Belle Isle (that was once the name of Kettle Island which is directly across the river). Further in the background you can see the ONEC boat house and downtown Gatineau.

Aujourd'hui, alors que j'attendais que le garage installe mes nouveaux pneus d'hiver, je me suis promené jusqu'à la rivière des Outaouais. C'était une journée agréable pour une promenade tranquille avec une température de 15 C et un ciel presque sans nuages. J'ai apporté un petit carnet de croquis et j'ai trouvé un bon endroit pour passer près de deux heures à dessiner. J'ai dessiné ici à d'autres occasions et j'ai toujours apprécié la vue. De mon point de vue, je pouvais voir un petit belvédère au-dessus de l'eau qui s'appelle Quai Belle Isle (c'était autrefois le nom de Kettle Island qui se trouve directement de l'autre côté de la rivière). Plus loin en arrière-plan, vous pouvez voir le hangar à bateaux de l'ONEC et le centre-ville de Gatineau.

I've read that there are about 500 different species of oak trees in the world. No wonder oaks are so admired for their hard rich wood, beautiful leaves and acorns. The inspiration for this drawing came while I stopped for some rest on a bike ride. Above me, I could hear a lot of squirrels in a tree and saw a lot of acorns on the ground. Of course, it was an oak tree. The way that that light played between its branches and leaves was really special. I took some pictures and decided to make an ink drawing. It took a while to replicate the sunlight shining through the leaves by drawing hundreds of ink lines but I'm happy with the results.

J'ai lu qu'il existe environ 500 espèces différentes de chênes dans le monde. Pas étonnant que les chênes soient si admirés pour leur bois dur et riche, leurs belles feuilles et leurs glands. L'inspiration pour ce dessin est venue lors que je m'arrêtais pour me reposer sur une balade à vélo. Au-dessus de moi, j'entendais beaucoup d'écureuils dans un arbre et voyais beaucoup de glands sur le sol. Bien sûr, c'était un chêne. La façon dont la lumière jouait entre ses branches et ses feuilles était vraiment spéciale. J'ai pris quelques photos et j'ai décidé de faire un dessin à l'encre. Il a fallu un certain temps pour reproduire la lumière du soleil qui brille à travers les feuilles en dessinant des centaines de lignes d'encre, mais je suis satisfait des résultats.
