The car is a mixture of different models as they weren’t at the red light long. I originally intended sitting outside to draw with view but sat in this bar was warmer with beer and food too.

Last year, I noticed the construction of a pedestrian-bicycle bridge over the Rideau River near 'The Rapids'. It's been named the Adàwe Crossing - an Algonquin term meaning “to trade” and is meant to be symbolic of the history of the Rideau River, the aboriginal heritage of the area and the bridge’s ability to link the communities on either shoreline. It's a lovely bridge and I took the opportunity to sketch it on one of my recent bike trips from a comfortable rock on the shoreline. One of the bridge's distinctive features is a pair of large silver spheres midway across the bridge on either side. It makes a wonderful mirror to take a selfie.

L'année dernière, j'ai remarqué la construction d'un pont piétonnier et à vélo sur la rivière Rideau près de 'Les Rapides'. Il a été nommé la Passerelle Adàwe - un terme algonquin qui signifie «commerce» et est censé être symbolique de l'histoire de la rivière Rideau, le patrimoine autochtone de la région et la capacité du pont pour relier les communautés de chaque rive. Il est un beau pont et j'ai saisi l'occasion de l'esquisser sur un de mes récents voyages de vélo d'un rocher sur le rivage. L'un des traits distinctifs du pont est une paire de grandes sphères d'argent à mi-chemin sur le pont de chaque côté. Il est un miroir merveilleux pour prendre un selfie.

I've read that there are about 500 different species of oak trees in the world. No wonder oaks are so admired for their hard rich wood, beautiful leaves and acorns. The inspiration for this drawing came while I stopped for some rest on a bike ride. Above me, I could hear a lot of squirrels in a tree and saw a lot of acorns on the ground. Of course, it was an oak tree. The way that that light played between its branches and leaves was really special. I took some pictures and decided to make an ink drawing. It took a while to replicate the sunlight shining through the leaves by drawing hundreds of ink lines but I'm happy with the results.

J'ai lu qu'il existe environ 500 espèces différentes de chênes dans le monde. Pas étonnant que les chênes soient si admirés pour leur bois dur et riche, leurs belles feuilles et leurs glands. L'inspiration pour ce dessin est venue lors que je m'arrêtais pour me reposer sur une balade à vélo. Au-dessus de moi, j'entendais beaucoup d'écureuils dans un arbre et voyais beaucoup de glands sur le sol. Bien sûr, c'était un chêne. La façon dont la lumière jouait entre ses branches et ses feuilles était vraiment spéciale. J'ai pris quelques photos et j'ai décidé de faire un dessin à l'encre. Il a fallu un certain temps pour reproduire la lumière du soleil qui brille à travers les feuilles en dessinant des centaines de lignes d'encre, mais je suis satisfait des résultats.

I made these illustrations from a bouquet of flowers that we bought for Easter. I planned to keep it simple so I only concentrated on two sprigs of flowers for my sketch - one of dahlias and another of alstroemeras. I used a fountain pen to draw the flowers and to fill in the dark spaces. I thought that I was done once I had my pen and ink sketch. After a while, I started to wonder how these sketches would look in colour but at the same time I didn't want to loose my simple black-and-white sketches. So, I used a technique I've tried before: I scanned the drawings and painted them on my iPad using Procreate. Not too complicated. Interesting results.

J'ai réalisé ces illustrations à partir d'un bouquet de fleurs acheté pour Pâques. Je souhaitais quelque chose de simple et me suis donc concentrée sur deux brins de fleurs pour mon croquis : un dahlia et un alstroemère. J'ai utilisé un stylo-plume pour dessiner les fleurs et remplir les zones sombres. Je pensais avoir terminé mon croquis à l'encre. Plus tard, j'ai commencé à me demander à quoi ressembleraient ces croquis en couleur, mais en même temps je ne voulais pas perdre mes simples croquis en noir et blanc. J'ai donc utilisé une technique que j'avais déjà employée : j'ai numérisé les dessins et je les ai coloriés sur mon iPad avec Procreate. Rien de bien compliqué. Le résultat est intéressant.

I couldn’t believe it when I drew it, but I had to confirm what I saw afterwards, online. In 1971 a main road was built through the castle buildings.

Today I learned octopuses will punch fish for no reason.

Kind of a dick move.

As I sat down to sketch the building, a cat and a flock of chickens walked out of the door. I prefer not to draw animals as it can look a bit twee, but they were there so I had to. At one point I was surrounded by pecking chickens. I only managed to sketch two of them, they’re too quick for me.

I walked a while to get a good view, sat on my stool and noticed I’d left my sketchbook in the car.
