Ottawa, April 9, 2014 - Members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery recently voted unanimously to "reserve the right to ask questions in all photo-ops and availabilities with the prime minister, cabinet ministers, and all parliamentarians, to fulfil our function as journalists in a democratic society.” The vote was a reaction to restrictions on access to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his ministers--and a revealing glimpse of how the ground has shifted on Ottawa political reporters. The regular Prime Ministerial press conference is a thing of the past. Senior bureaucrats hesitate to brief journalists. The PM and ministers take their message on the road or send it out on weekly video clips. Opposition MPs use the same techniques.
As a result, is the influence of political reporters on the wane in the face of shrinking resources, wide use of social media, and the distance Ottawa puts between government and reporters? Does the national media coverage of the government matter as much as it used to?
Jennifer Ditchburn, senior parliamentary correspondent for the Ottawa bureau of The Canadian Press, Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister of Multiculturalism, Senator Jim Munson, a former long-time member of the Press Gallery, and David Akin, national bureau chief for Sun Media and host of Battleground, were part of this discussion with moderator, Tom Clark, chief political correspondent for Global News and host of The West Block.

This is a future possible where not one civilization has not tried to take over the other and that cultural influences have not been surpressed. This is a future where everybody is free spirited just not to live free but to think free beyond the limitless bounds of their infinite imaginations. Where not any society will try to surpress who you are when you step out of your own society. A future where you will be free to dress, eat, listen to music with no intimidation from any society that will abound on it's own incredible moral respect, decency and modesty in the most caring ways you could ever dream of. A future where everything is created in the most beautiful means imaginable from music, fashion, science, art and love for what the Universe has abounded in so many diverse possibilities. I see this has the next level of evolution since humanity is no longer a baby anymore but a child that has out grown it's crib and preparing to step it's way into the vast unknown through exploration. You are looking 50 years into the future where ancient meets advance and technology meets nature all in harmony.
The Springfield Art Association will host an opening reception for a nationally juried ceramic exhibition entitled Shapes of Influence on Friday evening, August 3rd, from 5:30-7:30 PM. Awards and a gallery talk by juror Simon Levin will occur at 6:45 PM.
The show will be on display in the SAA's M.G. Nelson Family Gallery from August 3-September 1 and features work from over two dozen states and Canada.
