When Fermilab’s founding director, Robert Wilson, imagined an ideal laboratory, he wanted it to be architecturally impressive and artistically inspiring. With this in mind, he installed remarkable sculptures and designed buildings in influenced by culture, history, and physics.
Acqua Alle Funi, 1978
On the reflecting pond across from the entrance of Wilson Hall, there is a hyperbolic obelisk designed by Wilson. The name “Acqua Alle Funi” is an Italian phrase meaning “water to the ropes,” which refers to a story about an Egyptian obelisk ordered by Pope Sixtus V - considered to be a symbolic act, illustrating the triumph of Christianity over Paganism raised in St. Peter’s Square in the 16th century.
After viewing a multitude of photos of the sculpture in the enormous pond at the front entrance of Fermilab I did not see one which was a direct straight on shot. - and direct straight on image structuring is a taboo in photographic composition.

322 Reynolds Street (1925): Edwardian Four Square 2 storey stucco house with influences of Arts and Crafts with multi-paned wood windows, wide bracketed eaves and large front verandah.
Unusual rocks and formations on Pendine Sands.
These rock colours are heavily influenced by lime, as the cliffs lining the right-hand side of the beach are made of Carboniferous limestone.
The striking white colour at the bottom of the cliffs is caused by two distinct coastal processes.
The sea constantly batters the base of the cliffs.
This regular friction scrubs away the darker layer exposing fresh bright white limestone underneath.
A fruit and berry farm in Campania, Tasmania. This was taken from the Cherry orchard, looking towards the apple orchard.
The sea is pure therapy. It has a unique ability to completely calm and reset me. I crave it when I'm not there. Much like the mountains but they present a bigger challenge. A regular dose of both is vital to my wellbeing though. This coastline has got me through some tricky times in the past so I am conscious never to take it for granted. Portknockie in Morayshire, Scotland.
I've caught a bad cold, and haven't been able to smell anything for over a week. So, on the bright side, it doesn't bother me at all if Heidi brings her stinky new toy containing valerian root inside. However, I'll have to kick it out about a week before I get any visitors with fully functioning noses and olfactory nerves... ;-)
