A person’s socioeconomic position can influence their health and well-being, and disasters can place additional strain on those whose health and well-being are already compromised.
Vanessa Parks compiles and analyzes data on Gulf Coast communities that explores how the Deepwater Horizon oil spill affected mental and physical health and how social factors contributed to post-disaster health outcomes. “I am interested in what contributes to better health outcomes, because I want to help reduce health inequalities and inequities,” Vanessa said. “If residents have access to better economic resources and health care, they are better prepared for the traumatic impacts of disasters.” Vanessa is a Ph.D. student in Louisiana State University’s sociology program and a GoMRI Scholar with the Consortium for Resilient Gulf Communities (CRGC).

I made these with leftover Improv Under the Influence borders and some Essex yarn-dyed linen. I think they will become a table runner.
People often mistake me for an historian, which is wrong, but I can see how they might get that impression. I think of myself as many things – explorer, adventurer, photographer, artist, writer, poet, storyteller. Some of those are synonymous, but they give away the fact that I'm not purely motivated by the past. What drives me is discovery. It could be the search for something our species left behind in the forest – abandoned roads, cemeteries, vehicles, or buildings. But I spend just as much time around sleepy backroad bridges, walking smalltown side streets, and getting distracted by the natural beauty beyond any human influence. An historian does extensive research – not me! My patience concludes after writing down a few facts, consulting my old maps, and making notes from local word of mouth and rural legend. I'm heavily indebted to the researchers who came before me, as I tell my own life story wherever it takes me. As much as anything else, I'm looking to find myself.

Reconstruction of Hamilton Library continues. It's been over 5 years since the 2004 flash flood. Final touches are taking place on the Library's exterior and inside the basement.

The St. Anne's Hill Historic District in Dayton, Ohio is significant for both historical and architectural reasons. This area constitutes an excellent grouping of predominantly vernacular structures displaying high style influences through decorative features. The area dates roughly from I860 to the early twentieth century and displays a remarkable degree of integrity. Some structures such as the Bossier Mansion are the best of their style found in the city. The structures derive further significance from their historical connections to people Instrumental In the settlement and In the later commercial and Industrial growth of the city. The neighborhood Is also significant as the best and most intact example of Dayton's German ethnic neighborhoods.
The area that is now St. Anne's Hill was part of the original out-lots of Dayton, plotted In 1802 by Daniel C. Cooper, proprietor of Dayton. For many years after this, the area was part of the commons to the east. However, by the I830's, advertisements promoted the sale of flowers and shrubbery from the greenhouse on "St. Anne's Hill". In 1838, Eugene Dutoit built his farm house, still standing at 222 Dutoit Street, on his III acre tract. In the late 1830's, the Hill was also called "Vinegar HIM" because of Eugene Dutoit's apple orchard.
The German Influence on the Hill remained high well Into the early twentieth century, and remnants of that Influence still remain today. The Liederkrantz-Turner Hall at the corner of High and Fifth is a club dedicated to the German heritage, culture, tradition, and music. Although the structure has been altered from its original c. 1890 appearance, it still makes its presence felt as does the Odd Fellows Hall at Fifth and LaBelle.
St. Anne's Hill Historic District Is a cohesive predominantly working class neighborhood displaying a large collection of one and two story brick or frame vernacular house types which show Influences of the popular nineteenth century styles, particularly Italianate, Gothic Revival and Queen Anne.
