But is it a gaijin influence? Kyoto is the only place in Japan were there are many restaurants along the banks of a river. In my city, despite the fact that there is a river running through its centre there is only one cafe and no restaurants on its banks and the one cafe does not afford a river view.

Kyoto is the exception but then Kyoto is also the second biggest tourist attraction in Japan (after Tokyo) which has presumably been influenced by Western culture. Western tourists may have promoted the construction of restaurants along side this river. I think that other cities may find increased tourism if they followed suit.

I found that Kyoto citizens had a habit of ignoring red pedestrian traffic signals when there are no cars coming. Japanese pedestrians wait, as is the law, even if there are no cars in other parts of Japan. I wonder if the this Kyoto dwellers behaviour is influenced by gaijin too.

Influenced by Mexican dances about fearsome man-eating jaguars, In Pre-Colombian traditions these dances had the purpose of petitioning the jaguar god, the lord of all animals, so that he would permit successful hunting for the villagers.

My main intention of this piece was to give new life to a discarded object.

I collected shoes from several charity shops, disassembled the structures and worked each one down to the exterior materials. I used the canvas as a base to illustrate the mask of the mexican jaguar God. I wanted to convey a narrative through my piece as the shoes I picked up all have a story of their own.

1833 Atlas of Voyage of Astrolabe - Molluscs - Plate 46 - Lithograph

(27.0 X 40.0 cm)

MITRIDAE: Mitres have beautiful shells and are favourites with collectors.

The Astrolabe sailed from Toulon on 22 April 1826, under the command of the French explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville, towards the Pacific Ocean for a circumnavigation of the world that was destined to last nearly three years.

The Astrolabe explored parts of New Zealand then visited Fiji, after which Dumont d'Urville executed the first relief maps of the Loyalty Islands (part of French New Caledonia) and explored the coasts of New Guinea. The voyage continued with the mapping of part of the Caroline Islands and the Moluccas. The Astrolabe returned to Marseille on 25 March 1829 with an impressive load of hydrographical papers and collections of zoological, botanical and mineralogical reports, which were destined to strongly influence the scientific analysis of those regions.

Dumont d'Urville then returned to Paris, where he was promoted to captain and wrote the five volume report of his travels, published at the expense of the French government between 1832 and 1834, which included this print. He also invented the terms Malaisia, Micronesia and Melanesia, distinguishing these Pacific cultures and island groups from Polynesia.

I can see the Middle Eastern and Italian influences, but I'm not sure where the Irish comes in. Naples, Italy.

The work is by James Rosenquist (1933-2017) and has been on display at the USF Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa. Rosenquist gained fame in the 1960s as the Pop Art movement gathered pace, although he did not wish to be closely identified as a pop artist. He settled in Florida from the early 1970s, teaching at USF and maintaining a home and studio in Hernando County. A fire there in 2009 destroyed many of his more recent works. Rosenquist's induction in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame 2001 recognized the major influence he has had on the Tampa Bay art scene, notably in the public art throughout St. Pete.
