Taken without a tripod with a cheap lens from China. Not super happy with this, so I might revisit it in future.

Chop your potatoes

I chopped these quite thick and chunky (4-5cm on the long edge) which meant they took longer to cook. I'd recommend smaller in future considering they're going to be blended.

Another piece of Vancouver swag I finally found time to open, The Kotobukiya 1/8 Tales of Symphonia Collet Brunnel.

I LOVED the game when it came out for the Nntendo Gamecube, introducing some mechanics like the Team Assault that would go on to be refined and perfected in future games. Like the later released Tales of Vesperia, the voice acting was exceptional, and was the first Tales game I had played since the horribly recorded Tales of Destiny 2 (aka Tales of Eternia), and I somehow skipped all the PS2 games, only playing Abyss on the 3DS.

I did a little research and it seems that all the more expensive scale statues, such as this one, never actually even came close to having a complete cast. In fact, Kotobukiya only ever released Collet, and Alter did Lloyd and Zelos. The cheaper One Coin line however seemed to do them all.

Like most of the Kobuukiya offerings, the overall design and intent of the statue is met, which basically means the thing looks as it should. Released in 2014 for 7,800 Yen, that would certainly put this at above average pricing. By comparison, even the Bishoujo line was arpmd 5,000 or so.

Clearly based on the animation cells (thank the Lord, because the in game models didn't look so hot) the statue captures the essence of her design, including her Chakram, though I don't recall them being so small. Detailing of the sculpt is pretty good, including the fine details on the hair, fabric folds, and other small things. I especially like how the outfit is just floating in the air.

The Production Values on the finished piece, however, are a tad weak. Luckily no issues with sanding, but you can easily tell that paint wise there were some sloppy areas, not even things you need a good macro lens to detect.

I didn't pa a fortune for this, definitely below MSRP, so I'm generally OK with this piece. While it's sad there's no set to complete, there's also no pressure to attempt such a thing.

We had an event at our local airport called wings and wheels. There were a few vintage aircraft and some classic cars on display. There were not as many of the aircraft or cars as in future years, but that might be I was there when it first began on a Friday. Hopefully there was more participation throughout the weekend.

‘Raleside Brewhouse’, 2a Bickerstaffe Square, Talbot Road, Blackpool. Wednesday 22 January 2025

A new pub opened in October 2024 originally to be named ‘Trainwreck’ as a sister venue to the ‘Shipwreck’, Cleveleys. My first visit here was on Wednesday 22 January 2025.

The pub sells four real ales from handpumps with most beers coming from the ‘Fuzzy Duck’ Brewery, Poulton-le-Fylde. As well as other alcoholic drinks there is a wide selection of hot and cold non-alcoholic drinks available. The real ales are very reasonable priced and there is a 25 pence discount on a pint for customers who show their CAMRA membership card.

Breakfasts are served in the morning, light lunches and meals are also served including burgers, toasties, platters, Paninis, sandwiches and wraps.

The Railside Brewhouse is in an excellent location, just two minutes’ walk from Blackpool North railway station, tram station and bus stops. It is also directly opposite the new Holiday Inn which opened in 2024 and is just far enough away from the central area of Blackpool.

The pub occupies the ground floor North West corner of ‘Bickerstaff House’ Council Offices which opened in 2014. The front entrance is under two “Y”s, before the building existed this entrance would have been exactly were the rear entrance to the Peter Jones Carpet shop was located on the back street that ran behind a block of properties fronting Talbot Road from Cookson Street to Swainson Street.

The interior of pub is lovely, it is modern, spacious, comfortable and warm (there is nothing worse than a cold pub). There are stairs leading up to a small balcony area which has a few additional tables and chairs. The best seats are those on the ground floor adjacent to the windows overlooking Cookson Street where you can observe Blackpool’s finest going about their daily business. There is a live screen adjacent to the bar which displays train departures (and cancellations) from Blackpool North station. Another screen showing departure times of trams and buses from Talbot Road would also be useful. The outside drinking area is at the front of the pub underneath the two “Y”s.

The Railside Brewhouse is a must visit pub and is very much a welcome addition to this area of Blackpool. It is also a very good replacement for the long demolished former Higson’s pub the ‘Kings Arms’, which was located just a few yards away where the interior of the main entrance to Sainsbury’s is now. I look forward to returning here in future. Opening hours are 08:30 during the week with alcohol served from 10:00, on a Sunday it opens at 10:30. Apart from on a Saturday it closes at 19:00, Saturdays it is 21:00.

In Future Little DJ we take a closer look at the art of being a Disc jockey. Covering important gear, terms and techniques. A must-have for the future little turntablist or house DJ!

A new tradition maybe, although the large crowds could be a deterrent in future years... the night Colette, Eric, and I went though, it wasn't too bad. I had been the weekend prior with my mom and my sister, but Colette had not gotten the opportunity to really run and around and play. So, Eric and I took her back, this time giving her a bit more freedom to run about and enjoy herself. It was an awesome night. This was when the temperatures were still just right and before we had started to busy ourselves with housework. Now that we've moved into our house, we've hardly had time to edit pictures, let alone snap 'em. Hopefully, that will start to change in the upcoming weeks. Happy belated Halloween, everyone!

Walt Disney World's Epcot - Foliage in Future World

Something a bit different in the way of Railway art...

"Summer's End", inspired by a photograph of Paddington Station in 1912 or so, showing parents seeing their sons off at the end of summer holidays, for another term at suitably distinguished West Country Boarding Schools. The coaches are Great Western Toplight stock, painted in the short-lived coaching lake livery.

This was a bit of a 'kill or cure' project for me. I've always regarded painting figures as my weak point and tended to minimise them wherever possible. I decided if I tried this, I'd either become a touch more confident about them or decide to paint without any people in sight in future. In the event I'm fairly pleased with how they've turned out.

Executing campaigns under the supervision of a qualified #attorney #Internet #marketing becomes even more beneficial. This fact has become an established one now and in future, the legal requirements are going to be more important . goo.gl/gSWwgc

Design and fold by me. I hope to develop eyes more in future versions, but this is the first result I'm happy with.

Testing the Nikkor 135/3.5 on a D700.

I intend to make much better use of this lens in future, it's exceptionally sharp, even wide open.

Stoke Edith church is something quite special, an unusual mix of the tower and spire of the 14th century building and the main body a mid 18th century replacement. The spire is a landmark (visible to me on numerous journeys to the area by rail) made all the more distinctive by its truncated top, giving it the appearance of a huge obelisk arising from the medieval tower. The village itself is tiny and consists of a few houses around the road leading up to the church, which nestles semi-hidden within a secluded leafy enclosure of its own.

On approaching all the visitor sees is the medieval steeple standing proud over the trees, and could be forgiven for thinking another complete medieval church lies in wait. Only at the churchyard does one see that the nave has been rebuilt in Georgian Baroque, replaced by the local Foley family in 1740. This is a fairly compact churchyard and the building likewise isn't particularly long, the shallow chancel being more or less continuous with the nave.

Entry is via the south door and reveals a delightfully light interior, the cream-washed nave with its flat plaster ceiling leading to a shallow chancel area, separated by a pair of columns and defined by its lower lighting, decorative paintwork and Foley monuments, giving it the feel of a family mausoleum. The east window has Victorian glass which makes this space rather gloomy for the sake of adding a bit of colour. At the west end however is a relic of the medieval church, the alabaster effigy of a 15th century noblewoman lying next to the font (itself an oddly precarious-looking thing with a marble bowl and a later wrought iron stem).

This is a very handsome and memorable building, thus I was keen to revisit in 2021 to upgrade my photos (from two previous visits in 2010 with my old camera and sans tripod, thus requiring some improvement). I was disappointed to find it locked this time with a notice on the door suggesting this was because of Covid measures (not the first incident of this I'd encountered that day in this normally visitor friendly area). So sadly I had to forget about new internal shots and hope for better luck another time.

However I have since seen several online articles bemoaning the poor state of the church and suggesting it had been closed for safety. It looked in reasonable order to me back in 2010 aside from some water ingress in the chancel area that was affecting the paintwork, but that was over a decade ago so the situation may have worsened considerably since.

Earlier this year it was announced that the church is to formally close for worship and be sold to the Foley family as their private chapel and mausoleum. This is good news in that it secures the building's future, though the implications are sadly that visitor access will be extremely limited in future. I am thus all the more frustrated that I was unable to get back inside one last time on my most recent visit, so will have to make do with my old photos of the interior.

At last! Decent Adelaide weather.

I have a good feeling about today. England can do it.

[Note to self: ignore these feelings in future; revert to normal pessimism.]
