Some Drivers from the Previous Day were Seen Packing Up and Heading Home after a Brilliant Days Racing while Others were Just Arriving and Getting their Machines Prepared for The Race Track.

First Up onto the Circuit was The Intermarque Silhouettes and Thease Machines are Very Quick and Built to be as Light Weight as Possible by Using a Space Frame Chassis and a Fibreglass Body.

A new tradition maybe, although the large crowds could be a deterrent in future years... the night Colette, Eric, and I went though, it wasn't too bad. I had been the weekend prior with my mom and my sister, but Colette had not gotten the opportunity to really run and around and play. So, Eric and I took her back, this time giving her a bit more freedom to run about and enjoy herself. It was an awesome night. This was when the temperatures were still just right and before we had started to busy ourselves with housework. Now that we've moved into our house, we've hardly had time to edit pictures, let alone snap 'em. Hopefully, that will start to change in the upcoming weeks. Happy belated Halloween, everyone!

I live only a few miles away from Crich.
A direct bus service to Crich runs past the end of the road where I live.
Yet I have never before posted a blog from there.
It was only when I received these images from friend Peter Rose that I realised what a gem on my doorstep I have been missing.

For some years, the trams in Sheffield were a big part of my life.
As a child, I lived a five minute walk away from the Queens Road depot where the body of this tram was built.
I went to school by tram, I visited my grandparents by tram, I went to work by tram.
They were a part of Sheffield’s urban scene that were just taken for granted.
Then in October 1960, 63 years ago almost to the day at the time of writing, they were gone.
Sheffield was a smoky, dirty city in those days but the cream and azure blue trams and buses were always kept clean.
In 1953 an attempt was made to reduce the cost of cleaning by painting buses and trams a dark green.
There was uproar in the city.
The citizens of Sheffield were proud of ‘their’ buses and trams.
The few vehicles that were green were rapidly repainted.
Today, Sheffield has a modern tramway system where one of the new trams was painted in an approximation of the traditional livery.
They are efficient, smart and do a good job but to Sheffielders of my and earlier generations they are merely a substitute for what went before.
The livery lived on with the buses until. ‘Sheffield Corporation Transport’ became part of ‘South Yorkshire Passenger Transport’ in 1974.
It is still much missed.

Members of the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry's 2026 graduating class participat in the 25th Annual White Coat Ceremony. Forty-one students, from 14 states completed the first two years of the professional curriculum and received their white coats during the ceremony as a symbol that they have earned the right to begin their clinical education. Next to graduation, the ceremony is the most significant event in future doctors’ optometric education.

Data and technology play more critical roles in the whole lifecycle of cost management. quantity surveyors need to catch up with the digitalisation trend in the construction industry.
Glodon company limited recently talked with Bola Abisogun OBE, the Founder and Chairman of DiverseCity Surveyors and an elected Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
In the talk, we discussed policies and regulations on quantity surveying, data and technology application, information sharing and collaboration, vocational skills, sustainable development, etc. We tried to shed light on the opportunities and challenges encountered by quantity surveyors in the construction industry's digital transformation in construction process while exploring solutions for the coordinated development of people, organisations, industry, and technology.
What follows are highlights of the talk, edited and condensed for clarity.
Glodon: the UK introduced the concept of golden thread and the new Building Safety Act. How do you think the golden thread and government policy or regulation will lead to the digital transformation of quantity surveying in the UK and the global market?
Bola: Because of what happened at Grenfell tower and the lack of knowledge of detail as to who did what, when, and why, Dame Hackitt led a report called Building a Safer Future. One of the recommendations in that report was to mandate legally, that asset owners/accountable persons/duty holders with high-rise residential buildings would be legally required to demonstrate and evidence the golden thread.
The golden thread means different things to different people at the moment. But in my mind, the golden thread is all about understanding how the building was designed, built, and maintained during its entire lifecycle, and also providing information and advice for users of the building to understand how the building should be working. The golden thread has to be created in a digital format. It has to be maintained in a digital format, and it has to be shared and enabled as an interoperable layer in a digital format.
So the fact that the only way to succeed with the golden thread is to unlock digital transformation in historical analogue processes, will 'force' the cultural change required, which I believe, for the sector is to shift from two dimensions to potentially five dimensions.
Glodon: How does the golden thread affect the future potential of the quantity surveyors?
Bola: It's all about data. Quantity surveyors historically have only ever managed data. Data from engineers, architects, clients, product manufacturers, and contractors. But, quantity surveyors have to now evolve from cost to value.
I believe that the quantity surveyor is well placed now to become a strategic advisor in so many other ways. We have to raise our game around what we have done. The value we are adding to projects, not only from a cost measurement and quantification basis but also now moving into the net zero and decarbonisation agenda, along with increasingly important ESG requirements. We need to think about our role in demonstrating value for the new client's agenda. And the role of technology and, specifically, the role of digital twins in that solution will become more prevalent over time.
Clients now are asking for more challenging requirements through their projects. They want more data, evidence, insights, and value. So the role of the quantity surveyor is at a crossroads today.
Glodon: Data is said to be the new gold of the industry which is of great importance in enabling and empowering transformation in quantity surveying. SMEs rely heavily on their historical data, possessing a significant disadvantage in data accuracy. What's your opinion on the inaccuracy of data existing in the industry?
Bola: In construction claims management, historical project data is relevant. But if it's not structured, it has no value. So the role of historical cost data in determining future or current project cost, not value, is skewed to some degree. It can only give, at best, a percentage of accuracy. If you value a project today, there are all these risks below the line that haven't yet been quantified and measured, which is always the case with the quantity surveyor. How do you bring certainty based on historical data to the unknown costs currently sitting within the cost plan you give to your client? All the current variables below the line have a risk of changing the minute you present them.
The question is when using historical cost data can you capture the changing cost drivers within 24 seconds of previously advising a client? It's never been possible to do that. But today, in 2022, with the level of technology and the tools that we have, it should be possible for every consultant to capture such detail, the real and at the right time, the movement of cost based on the composition of the design estimate. So when you think about the role of historical cost data, it has a role, but the role is not 100%. In order to get to 100%, ideally, you need to use technology to help you predict the different outcomes that you can't price, cost, and manage in 2D.
The first thing most clients say is how confident you are in the numbers you have presented. And that is when you find a quantity surveyor begins to talk about the risks and the unknown costs in the number submitted. So the role of technology, in my mind, is going to reduce the risks associated with every number that says the project is going to cost X plus.
We need to move to a point where we are fusing historical cost data with predictive cost data based on models of risk around the world that correlate with and pick up what is going on in supply chains in various countries and rely upon the competency of the professional design team and all other risks that have an impact on the whole-life construction cost. That is why we need to think not only about the role of historic cost data but the role of predictive cost data and the relationship between the two.
Glodon: In what way can the quantity surveying industry better collaborate? What is the best scenario for collaboration?
Bola: The biggest challenge we have with collaboration is not that the sector cannot do it; the challenge is how do we create trust. There is very little trust between the various actors, notoriously between clients and their professional design teams. So, in order to collaborate, we need to trust each other more. We have to remove the human emotion of prejudice and bias and develop the human capability to trust each other. We need to create technology solutions that foster trusting behaviours; such as digital twin and other distributed ledger-type technologies like blockchain.
I come back to solutions like the digital twin because the digital twin environment creates an opportunity for all stakeholders to become 'visible to each other. So if I make a change to my project workflow and I do not tell you, the system will tell you. It's all very transparent. There are very basic level conversations that do not foster trust in the industry, and the biggest consequence of a lack of collaboration, particularly on big data, is the fact that the trust in the data isn't there in the first place. Where does the data come from? Who put the data together? Is the data free? Is the data payable? All these are valid questions that either build or destroy trust between parties.
And on the collaboration piece, the question is, do I take away from my competitive advantage if I share my data with you? And it's a tougher question the higher and the bigger the business is. So, sharing data as a micro business is relatively straightforward. Sharing data as a big business is 'potentially' a real problem. And sharing data between big business and micro business is almost impossible, from a lived experience.
So, cultural change is required here And everywhere across the value chain. It's not entirely about the technology. It's about the people. The lack of collaboration within and across the industry is a people-centric challenge. It is not just a, but technology has a significant role to play in the available, scaleable and sustainable solution.
I will now come back to the tragedy of Grenfell tower. A blockchain solution can do two things: it gives clarity to any third party that wants to investigate what's happened from an audit perspective, and it also gives a level of trust because the data is immutable to all parties, and it gives transparency and accountability. If we can introduce trust, transparency, and accountability in a big data environment, it will unlock the cultural change required to 'force and sustain' collaboration.
Glodon: Technologies like blockchain, big data, and digital twins are emerging. What are preparations needed before we can cash in on their full potential?
Bola: What needs to happen for the role of technology to really flourish is the 154-year-old business model of the quantity surveyor needs to change. We need to recreate a new business model that talks about the new ways of sharing and creating data. And then align the skill set of the quantity surveyor, cost manager, and commercial manager to the new skills required. We need to then produce a new business offer to the public citizen and other key client groups that want to continue to pay for a professional service in the sphere of cost management.
And to me, it is aligned to the whole concept of working in cloud-based solutions, working in common data environments, using BIM-enabled, data-driven workflows, to foster better information management, deploying digital twin solutions, and using APIs, to share data. That's a new business model and one that I have been working on since I graduated from university in 1994.
However, the bigger issue is the fact that the digital skills maturity of every professional isn't high enough. Right now, every professional, at least every quantity surveyor, should think about skilling or reskilling with a focus on digital and people skills. Unless that happens, the change we need to see won't be sustainable. Clients that are asking for better and more meaningful, measurable outcomes will begin to force the change by asking for metrics that are aligned to, for example, ESG funding models and deliverables. And to do that well, you are going to need to use solutions like digital twins. So this is a very layered perspective that the industry needs to think about. But it starts with the uptake of digital skills.
Glodon: What specific skills and knowledge will be essential for the professionals in the future if they are the new embracers or the supporters of new technologies?
Bola: The first skill I think to be acquired is humility. Quantity surveyors need to recognise what they can do well and what they don't do well. And they need to be open and honest about where they go for solutions. In 2022, we cannot maintain our role as an individual, only as value-creating, empathetic team players.
Most of the skills required for the quantity surveyor, aside from the obvious digital skills, are emotional, critical thinking, empathy, and strategic team-building skills. Soft skills that make people better manage others and themselves. It's something that comes over time. But those are the bigger skills because we are going to become less of a technician and more an advisor. And to be a great advisor, you have to understand people and recognise their emotions. That is why I see a big move towards emotional intelligence and people skills becoming much more relevant and then, becoming fused and better managed with the technology side because our technical role has been, and will continue to be, augmented by technology.
It's about people; it all comes back to people.
Glodon: Sustainability and carbon neutrality is an urgent task that calls for a global effort. Does digitalisation in quantity surveying offer hope and solutions to reduce carbon emissions?
Bola: The role of carbon measurement sits very well with the traditional quantity surveyor, but it will require different skills and a different understanding and appreciation of the risks associated with carbon measurement and the construction process. I believe it's an evolution of the traditional role, but it is not entirely about measurement. It's more about interpretation and advice on risks associated with the process, everything from the inception of the design, construction, and handover beyond construction. The real challenge and the real opportunity for carbon measurement are in occupied buildings. Is the building functioning and operating in the right way? That's the key and critical question. And from my vast experience, the best professional to oversee that process and/or audit is the quantity surveyor or 'digital' cost manager.
Glodon: How do you think the role of enterprises such as Glodon to play in the digital transformation of the quantity surveying industry and in the evolving of the future role of quantity surveyors?
Bola: This is a perfect opportunity for successful entities like Glodon to lead the digital transformation agenda. But in order to do that well, we have to disrupt the sector. We have to disrupt the current status quo. Cultural change will not happen with people alone, but it can and will happen with technology-led, people-centric solutions. With your investment in digital twins, big data, artificial intelligence, blockchain, etc., you are now well gifted to position yourselves as an innovator and think about your future role, and what digitally enabled services you can offer that add value to the professional Quantity Surveyor / Cost & Commercial Manager and also, create important and much-needed value for clients. You can help to address some of the pressing problems for quantity surveying today. For example, cost overruns, are among the biggest issues in the UK construction industry, which could be caused by inaccurate project requirements, poor communication, lack of collaboration, undefined risks, and preliminary cost estimates based on scant design information; the inaccuracy of project data across the project life cycle and value chain; along with the 'age-old' professional discipline working in silos, hampers the very fragmented way of delivering projects. It is time to be bold and lead the trajectory of a wholly collaborative and seamless project delivery model, driven by people with real-time / right-time datasets.

Mr. McQuiston 2nd that Mr. AJ Brough, ex President of Clissold & of LPBA be elected Chairman of Asson for ensuing year. Hawkins prop. Filmer 2nd that the retaining VP's be again elected. Gloster Meteor F8 Prone Position
A much modified Meteor F8 fighter, the ‘prone position’ Meteor, was used to evaluate the advantages of coping with the effects of gravity while flying lying down. In practice the difficulties of operating the controls of the aircraft outweighed the advantages.
In the early 1950s the adoption of a prone position cockpit in future combat aircraft designs appeared attractive for two reasons. Firstly, such a configuration enabled the frontal area of the airframe to be reduced and therefore reduced drag. Secondly, aircrew can withstand greater ‘g’ forces if not sitting upright a vital consideration given the need for jet combat aircraft to manoeuvre at ever increasing speeds.
The Bristol Aeroplane Company sought to exploit these advantages by incorporating a prone pilot position in its proposal for a rocket powered fighter the Bristol Type 178. In order to establish the viability of a prone pilot cockpit, the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine required a jet aircraft that could be flown by a pilot lying on his stomach. Meteor F8 WK935 was selected for modification and joined the Institute of Aviation Medicine in the autumn of 1954.
Following some fifty-five hours of flight testing it was concluded that the prone position concept was feasible, but only if absolutely necessary for aerodynamic reasons. The aircraft was never flown solo from the front cockpit. The development of special aviation clothing offered a simpler solution to the problem of counteracting ‘g’ forces and the prone position was abandoned.

Experiencing collaboration for nearly two months, the Center won the Seawater Desalination Project for 1st Phase Xudabao Nuclear Power Plant from many competitors; it not only is a ratification to the Center’s ability in the field of seawater desalination for nuclear power plant, but lay the Center’s market position of seawater desalination for nuclear power plant.
At present, there are only four seawater desalination project for nuclear power plant domestically, among them, the projects the Center has participated in and implemented include the seawater desalination system for Liaoning Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant, the seawater desalination system for Shangdong Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant, and the seawater desalination project for Xudabao Nuclear Power Plant just won. It marks that the Center has occupied 3/4 absolute superiority in seawater desalination for nuclear power plant domestically, laying solid foundation for the seawater desalination market for nuclear power plant in future.

Yesterday Jody and I hosted our annual I Love A Clean San Diego #coastalcleanupday2023 site at Cooper Canyon, here in City Heights. In partnership with Linda Pennington and Project C.L.E.A.N. we continue to engage volunteers in acts of service while clearing litter, invasive plants, illegal dumping and graffiti from our streets and canyons, saving much of it from continuing down the watershed into our bay.
We are typically able to get upwards of 50 volunteers to our site, but the stars didn’t align. We did, however, have a dozen people on site who made swift work of our parkway and the top of Cooper Canyon. With a couple truck loads from Azalea Park Neighborhood Association, and San Diego Canyonlands, we filled our dumpster, donated by Veteran’s Dumpster Rental. Our Hula Hooping neighbor, Walter jumped in and made a big dent in clearing the brush from the path. We had leaders (and their kids), as well as students from Cardinals Interact, who made time on their own to show up.
I began the morning in the pre-dawn light waiting for our dumpster to arrive. As I photographed the “before” images I was dismayed to see more than 30 poop piles and hundreds of cigarette butts along the parkway. There is also a well-intentioned “cat lady” who leaves bowl after bowl of food for the feral cats. This all leads to people not caring for our community. I contacted her and made a better plan for her work. There was also a neighbor who walked his dogs, letting them do their business in the strip. I asked him the favor of carrying bags in the future and advised that I would do a clean-sweep of the space to have a fresh start. In return he not only came back to collect his own dogs’ mess, but I was surprised to discover he had cleared the entire parkway before I came back with our supplies. He drove by and left his info to be included in future events. #buildingcommunity
We did so much in just a few hours. We’re grateful for the resources provided and the platform for this worldwide cleanup event.

A new pub opened in October 2024 originally to be named ‘Trainwreck’ as a sister venue to the ‘Shipwreck’, Cleveleys. My first visit here was on Wednesday 22 January 2025.
The pub sells four real ales from handpumps with most beers coming from the ‘Fuzzy Duck’ Brewery, Poulton-le-Fylde. As well as other alcoholic drinks there is a wide selection of hot and cold non-alcoholic drinks available. The real ales are very reasonable priced and there is a 25 pence discount on a pint for customers who show their CAMRA membership card.
Breakfasts are served in the morning, light lunches and meals are also served including burgers, toasties, platters, Paninis, sandwiches and wraps.
The Railside Brewhouse is in an excellent location, just two minutes’ walk from Blackpool North railway station, tram station and bus stops. It is also directly opposite the new Holiday Inn which opened in 2024 and is just far enough away from the central area of Blackpool.
The pub occupies the ground floor North West corner of ‘Bickerstaff House’ Council Offices which opened in 2014. The front entrance is under two “Y”s, before the building existed this entrance would have been exactly were the rear entrance to the Peter Jones Carpet shop was located on the back street that ran behind a block of properties fronting Talbot Road from Cookson Street to Swainson Street.
The interior of pub is lovely, it is modern, spacious, comfortable and warm (there is nothing worse than a cold pub). There are stairs leading up to a small balcony area which has a few additional tables and chairs. The best seats are those on the ground floor adjacent to the windows overlooking Cookson Street where you can observe Blackpool’s finest going about their daily business. There is a live screen adjacent to the bar which displays train departures (and cancellations) from Blackpool North station. Another screen showing departure times of trams and buses from Talbot Road would also be useful. The outside drinking area is at the front of the pub underneath the two “Y”s.
The Railside Brewhouse is a must visit pub and is very much a welcome addition to this area of Blackpool. It is also a very good replacement for the long demolished former Higson’s pub the ‘Kings Arms’, which was located just a few yards away where the interior of the main entrance to Sainsbury’s is now. I look forward to returning here in future. Opening hours are 08:30 during the week with alcohol served from 10:00, on a Sunday it opens at 10:30. Apart from on a Saturday it closes at 19:00, Saturdays it is 21:00.

Dr. B. Anirudhan, Principal, Nehru Arts and Science College (NASC), gave the welcome address and congratulated the winners whole heartedly for their effort in achieving the academic excellence. He welcomed Adv. P. Krishnadas, Chairman & Managing Trustee of Nehru Group of Institutions, Dr. P. Krishnakumar, CEO & Secretary of NGI, Chief Guest, Dr. H. N. Nagaraja, Director General, Graphic Era Deemed to be University Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Guest of Honor, Prof. R. Sharma, Former Head &Coordinator, UGC - SAP Dept. Biochemistry & Dean, School of Life Sciences, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, award nominees, teaching fraternity and the press.
Adv. P. Krishnadas, Chairman & Managing Trustee of Nehru Group of Institutions presided over the Function. He congratulated the winners and encouraged the spectators to achieve the same in future. He insisted that the growth of this great institution lies in vision of his father, beloved Founder Chairman Late Shri. P. K. Das. He stated that the quality of NGI is in the hands of the faculty members and stake holders and he also insisted the importance of the Guru and he is placed before God.
Dr. P. Krishnakumar, CEO & Secretary of NGI, felicitate his wishes to the award winners and encouraged the faculty members to update their knowledge and qualification.
Dr. H. N. Nagaraja, Director General, Graphic Era Deemed to be University Dehradun, Uttarakhand was the Chief Guest of the day. In his address, he emphasized the Purpose, Scope and the Quality of the Education to upgrade their knowledge. He praised the great vision of the Founder Chairman Late Shri. P.K. Das and his strong will of starting the education institutions in those days. He emphasized that everyone should get visionary from great people. He also highlighted that being a teacher is a easy profession, the teacher transforms the thoughts into action. He stressed the importance of academic research and multidisciplinary areas and stated that everything is available in India and we should not depend on other countries for anything. He quoted that the problem in India is that we are not giving importance to accountability of thoughts and ideas and he also compared the scenario in foreign countries that the faculties strive hard to maintain the consistency in their domain. He insisted the Indian faculties should hone their skills to compete with the emerging global needs.
Dr. M. Kanagarathinam, the co-ordinator of 14th Shri P. K. Das Memorial Best Faculty Award proposed the vote of thanks and thanked the NGI management, award applicants and NASC faculty members for their support in organizing the event successfully.

A new tradition maybe, although the large crowds could be a deterrent in future years... the night Colette, Eric, and I went though, it wasn't too bad. I had been the weekend prior with my mom and my sister, but Colette had not gotten the opportunity to really run around and play. So, Eric and I took her back, this time giving her a bit more freedom to run about and enjoy herself. It was an awesome night. This was when the temperatures were still just right and before we had started to busy ourselves with housework. Now that we've moved into our house, we've hardly had time to edit pictures, let alone snap 'em. Hopefully, that will start to change in the upcoming weeks. Happy belated Halloween, everyone!

Articles were called for the second volume of “Parliamenthu Sara Sanhitha” last year under the guidance of the Secretary General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Mr. Dhammika Dasanayake focusing on a number of areas.
This journal contains articles by a number of scholars representing the academic field under a wide range of disciplines such as the Legislative Process, Sustainable Development, Electoral System and its amendments, Parliamentary Reporting and Media, Public Outreach and the Trends in Sri Lankan Women's Politics. The Review Board comprised of Senior Professor Ratnasiri Arangala, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Professor Ajantha Hapuarachchi, University of Colombo, Dr S. J. Yogarajah, University of Kelaniya, Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe, Sri Palee Campus, University of Colombo and senior lecturer Wijayananda Rupasinghe, University of Kelaniya.
“Parliamenthu Sara Sanhitha” will be distributed to libraries and relevant stakeholders in future. Also, this journal can be obtained by contacting the Department of Communication of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
Director Legislative Services and Acting Director for the Department of Communications Mr. H. E. Janakantha Silva announced the initiation of the third volume of the “Parliamenthu Sara Sanhitha” Refereed Academic Journal at this occasion. Accordingly, from today (08) to April 24, papers will be called for the third volume under 11 subtopics falling under the main theme "Trends of Globalization, Anti-Globalization and Parliamentary Process".

STLSC boys put up strong resistance at the start of the game but eventually the tenacity of the SFAMSC Cheetahs broke through their defences to win a decisive victory of 25-43. Great work Cheetahs! A new tradition maybe, although the large crowds could be a deterrent in future years... the night Colette, Eric, and I went though, it wasn't too bad. I had been the weekend prior with my mom and my sister, but Colette had not gotten the opportunity to really run and around and play. So, Eric and I took her back, this time giving her a bit more freedom to run about and enjoy herself. It was an awesome night. This was when the temperatures were still just right and before we had started to busy ourselves with housework. Lots and lots of honeyeaters of all kinds in the garden. They flit from tree to tree so fast, and my camera is not very good at snapping birds. I'll try to get more bird photos in future, though, as I really do like the challenge!
New Housing in Glitch (the game). It's a personal street. At the moment we just have a patch, a wood tree and a metal rock and the house. There's signpost on the left for adding street locations of friends for visiting purposes. In future we will be able to grow new land, add resources to it.
A new tradition maybe, although the large crowds could be a deterrent in future years... the night Colette, Eric, and I went though, it wasn't too bad. I had been the weekend prior with my mom and my sister, but Colette had not gotten the opportunity to really run around and play. So, Eric and I took her back, this time giving her a bit more freedom to run about and enjoy herself. It was an awesome night. This was when the temperatures were still just right and before we had started to busy ourselves with housework. Chop your potatoes
I chopped these quite thick and chunky (4-5cm on the long edge) which meant they took longer to cook. I'd recommend smaller in future considering they're going to be blended.
This seismogram is from the West Rim seismic station at Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii. The regularly-spaced spikes of noise are "gas pistoning" events at Halemaumau Crater in Kilauea's summit caldera from 5:15 to 6:57 PM, local time, on 14 June 2026. This activity occurred directly after the end of Kilauea's "episode 49" eruption.

If you’ve been following the ongoing eruption of Kilauea, you may have seen the terms "gas piston" or "gas pistoning" show up in some of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) updates, photo captions, and other places. If you’ve followed Kilauea’s activity for even longer than the current eruption, you may have seen the term pop up before as well - the phenomenon has been observed in the 2008–2018 lava lake, in vents at Pu'u'o'o between 1983 and 2018, and even in earlier eruptions here, like at Maunaulu in the 1960s and in Halemaumau in the early part of the 1900s (during HVO founder Thomas Jaggar’s tenure here at Kilauea).
But what exactly is this "gas pistoning" that we’re referring to?
Essentially, gas pistoning is a shallow, degassing-driven rise and fall of a lava surface. Often these pistons occur in narrow conduits - although they can happen in larger lava lakes and even in lava channels - and in bunches, as part of a series.
To start a piston, or one cycle of pistoning, lava at the surface becomes more viscous, or thick, usually by cooling. That cooler, more viscous lava is more difficult than usual for gases to escape through, so gases that would otherwise escape easily to the atmosphere instead begin to accumulate and build up a foamy, bubbly layer beneath that cooler surface lava.
Eventually, that foamy layer becomes buoyant enough to push the whole layer of viscous lava above it up to higher levels in the volcanic conduit (akin to a piston moving up within an engine).
If the lava reaches the top of the conduit, such that it can spill out, the top lava layer thins out to the point that the gas layer beneath can be released, which is often accompanied by spattering and bubble bursts. Any lava that did not spill out of the conduit can then drain back down deeper into the conduit, where it may or may not become part of another gas piston cycle.
If the lava remains within a conduit, but still at a higher level than normal because of the buoyant foam layer, the piston may destabilize on its own, or it may require an external force to destabilize it. Many gas pistons at Maunaulu and Halemaumau have been observed to end, or drain, when rocks from a rockfall punctured the top layer of viscous lava, which then allowed the gas from the accumulated foam layer to escape.
When the lava is rising or at a static high level, with most of the gas trapped in the foam layer, volcanic tremor and sulfur dioxide emission rates drop to low levels because much volcanic tremor is caused by degassing itself. If the gas can’t escape normally - whether during a gas piston or some other circumstance - not as much tremor is generated. When a gas piston ends, with the lava draining back down accompanied by violent spattering and release of the accumulated gas, tremor spikes.
We have observed a range of gas piston types during the recent eruption sequence at Kilauea. They began to become obvious in March of 2025, as part of precursory activity ahead of fountaining episodes 14 and 15. Since then, some episodes have had obvious precursory gas pistons, and others have not.
Some gas pistons from the current eruption involve the lava rising high enough that there are overflows that spill out of the vents, which can help initiate gas release and lava drainback. Others don’t quite reach the top of the conduit in the vents and instead drain without having lava overflows. Still more aren’t visible to our cameras or even observers in the field, but based on variations in recorded tremor and sulfur dioxide emission rate, we can surmise that the pistoning is indeed still happening, just deeper in the conduit out of view.
HVO does not yet have a full understanding of why the gas pistons are often a precursor to the high-fountaining episodes, or why they may behave differently from episode to episode. But we continue to collect geophysical and gas chemistry data, and make other geological observations, in order to better understand the gas pistoning phenomenon and the role that it plays in the current eruption.
Gas pistoning has been observed at Kilauea for over a hundred years, and we expect that it will continue to occur during the ongoing eruption and in future eruptions as well.
