All Nations Park, Northcote

This bust by some anonymous artists appeared a few months ago in All Nations Park. It was in initially removed by the Darebin City Council but has since been returned with the consent of the artists and will be there for twelve months after which it will be auctioned off with proceeds going to a local homeless support service. Quite a talking point in our community and a nice distraction from other things.

Mike and I are starting a new tradition this year: Christmas without the tree.

I'm so relieved. Because every year, the tree has been the source of this huge internal struggle for me.

On one hand... in what I like to think is a nod to my long-ago Druid ancestors... I pretty much worship trees. (You may have noticed this elsewhere in my stream. Ahem. It's a powerful force.) So... to bring one in, and adorn it with lights and ornamentation, and spend many hours admiring it... living with it as a member of the family... well, it feels kind of right.

On the other hand... there is no escaping the fact that the trees we bring inside each year are dead. And worse - we killed them ourselves, with our own hands, and have the sap-stained clothes and gloves to attest to our act of, let's face it, murder.

It's always bugged me, but the final straw was Mike's comment on our watering system. We have this great set-up where... every time the tree takes a drink... we hear this musical glug-glug-gurgle. Our tradition has always been to raise our glasses in response, and drink (or eat, or make the motions thereof) in the tree's direction, and say something like, "Here's to you, tree!"

So... yeah. We've lived with this charade for years. And it was only in the past few weeks that we agreed the glug-glugging was, in fact, sinister. Equivalent, we decided, to the flopping and gasping a fish does out of water.

We have agreed (thank goodness) not to inflict that slow-death suffering on another good, honest tree this year. And I am so relieved.

Yes, I know there's the option of the "living tree," but that has its own problems. Kind of like bringing home a big Tyee salmon and watching it swim in a bowl for a few weeks. Conifers just weren't made to live indoors. Or die indoors. So I'll do my seasonal worshipping outdoors this year - in the trees' own living room, which is as it should be.

After falling to the ground at about 0830hrs, after a passing merlin missed his target and left the niger seed container swinging - this goldfinch had made it back to it's perch and was still recovering at 1700 hours, but looking a little worse for wear!

In the quiet moments,

Where the soul speaks louder than words.

I could take a picture of every worthy second I live.

I took this photograph of my outstretched hand as it was bathed in green light from a LED landscape projector.

Not photoshopped.

I got up BEFORE the sunrise this morning... and now I'm going back to bed... lol

No post processing at all (although I'm sure it would make the colours more spectacular), straight from the camera - a hand-held Powershot S3 IS.

Thank you all!! :-)

The best beach is a vast, empty beach, I envy these two in their splendid isolation today. I took this a few weeks ago in Donegal. I had hoped to be there myself today for some sea air and sun but work has encroached on my weekend and I'm like a caged animal. Back to work in a minute when I finish my cup of tea. Hopefully I might get away this evening for a drive, I might go looking for some sunset shots at Lough Erne, hopefully!

I get alot of visits to my photostream now, I want to thank you all for that. I do cherish every comment and fav, honestly. Finding the time to return the compliment is sometimes hard. Thank you all for your time.

I hope ye are all having a good weekend, and happy Fathers Day!

My favourite car :) I've Seen it 5 times but this time was the only one, where the car was not behind a pane or sth (<-grammar ftw) Paris, Lamborghini Dealer.

I was travelling on the motorway on Tuesday and a lorry hit my car and pushed me sideways for a good distance before I was pushed onto the hard shoulder. God really protected my life.I am still in shock and having a medical review again today. The song that I had in my possession in the car was "I will survive"

Actually I wasn't hiding the last two month. I was under shadow ban of flickr and I had to delete nearly all my nude selfportraits to get my flickr back.

I'm not willing to pay a pro account. So this seems to be the end of my nude portraits here. This is very sad because nude selfportraits have always been an important part of my self expression on flickr.

This picture I took last weekend, when I visited my parents. I camped in the garden for one night when it was raining. I loved the sound of the water drops :)

Drop me a flickr mail if you like ;)

Yes, that is bacon on a maple bar; it is what they would call the maple-bacon bar. You may also notice Kellogg's Fruit Loops and Post Cereal's Cinnamon Toast Crunch, strategically settled on their own spherical-delights.

This is what a PWO inevitably leads to; replenishing the glycogen stores, spiking that insulin for salutary results. I suppose you can say that I Doughnut care too much about counting calories when a selection like this is provided.

It still surprises me to how much one can get away with by adopting ultra-low-carb sources of sustenance for the majority of the week. Add a few days of resistance training or HIIT and you can get away with even more.

Tomorrow's agenda, triathlon; cycling; swimming; and tennis... then likely, even more donuts.

I'm away for a while and will not have access to Flickr so cannot upload or comment. So here's a Barn Owl that I took recently close to home.

Galleria Umberto I is a public shopping gallery in Naples, southern Italy. It is located directly across from the San Carlo opera house. It was built between 1887–1891, and was the cornerstone in the decades-long rebuilding of Naples — called the risanamento (lit. "making healthy again") — that lasted until World War I. It was designed by Emanuele Rocco, who employed modern architectural elements reminiscent of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. The Galleria was named for Umberto I, King of Italy at the time of construction. It was meant to combine businesses, shops, cafes and social life — public space — with private space in the apartments on the third floor.

The Galleria is a high and spacious cross-shaped structure, surmounted by a glass dome braced by 16 metal ribs. Of the four iron and glass-vaulted wings, one fronts on via Toledo (via Roma), still the main downtown thoroughfare, and another opens onto the San Carlo Theater. It has returned to being an active center of Neapolitan civic life after years of decay. The building is part of the UNESCO listing of the Historic Centre of Naples as a World Heritage Site.

The Galleria Umberto is the setting for The Gallery (1947) by the American writer John Horne Burns (1916–1953) based on his experiences as an American soldier in Naples shortly after the liberation of the city. (Wikipedia)

I'm still sending everyone who is donating over 20 USD / 20 EURO / 20 GBP to any of the charities for Haiti (see the link at the end of the posting for a list) a print of any picture from my photostream.

It will be within 30x40cm and printed by a professional lab on photo paper.

Right now I'm at the University, waiting for the lesson to begin. It has been raining for a week and it is still raining. Looking at this grey sky makes me feel so sad and tired. The only thing that could make me feel a little better is looking at my Zanzibar pictures.

I've chosen this shot since I remember perfectly how I felt so good that day: the delicious lobsters we ate, the clear water, the warm sun, the desert beach and the silent sound...

Hope you are having a sunny day!

Today i got call from the Australian embassy, Ive got the student visa i had applied for...yeaayyy!!

As I walk through

This wicked world

Searchin for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself

Is all hope lost?

Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,

There's one thing I wanna know:

What's so funny bout peace love & understanding?

What's so funny bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on

Through troubled times

My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes

So where are the strong

And who are the trusted?

And where is the harmony?

Sweet harmony.

Cause each time I feel it slippin away, just makes me wanna cry.

What's so funny bout peace love & understanding?

What's so funny bout peace love & understanding?

So where are the strong?

And who are the trusted?

And where is the harmony?

Sweet harmony.

Cause each time I feel it slippin away, just makes me wanna cry.

What's so funny bout peace love & understanding?

NICK LOWE

After years of Lehigh Valley heritage ES44AC #8104 eluding me in the middle of the night, passing in trail, or parked under cloudy skies, I finally caught up to the most elusive (for me) unit on the roster. Here, she blasts through Carpenter, IL on the nose of 31N, bound for Terminal Railroad's Madison yard in Venice, IL, with a setout for the Alton & Southern at Mitchell.

A lucky day in which I headed north after lunch not knowing if this unit would come south out of Decatur to St. Louis, or head west to Kansas City. I made it to Raymond where I thought I'd get word one way or the other, just in time to hear the detector south of Raymond go off. Just in case, I commenced a spirited chase back south to get a look at the power and finally caught up with the head end just north of Staunton. The rest is history.

As it turns out, this train didn't pull on to the A&S for another 7 hours or so, well after the sun had sunk behind the trees, so this would be my only decent shot. I won this round, but just barely.

I was asked to take some family photos but with a twist ... or a Teddy to be specific. It was a glum day, cold and muggy. I didnt really plan for the day because it was short notice so we took a big bag full of props. This Teddy inspired a few ideas and the shoot was a success

Every bear that there ever was, would gather there for certain because, today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic ...
