This really is an oil lamp, and it's meant to flash!
I think it works by controlling the air, so the flame burns up, consumes the oxygen, drops which allow some fresh air to be drawn in so the flame burns up...
I made this from a crappy old flash from the 70s. No adjustments other than "on-off" but still so awesome.

Flash figure designed by Alex Ross from the Kingdom Come series. He's actually semi transparent - I tried to capture that as best as possible. It took a few lights behind him to get close.

I was trying to move some of my archives around today (you really donโt want to know) and ran across this one. Itโs from Meadowlark Gardens in Griffin, Georgia back in 2014. I donโt think Iโve ever used it before but I saw it and instantly thought โsquareโ, so here it is.

#107 for 122 in 2022: Turn back the clock
This dates from the 50's or 60's and it was my Dad's although he had not used it in years when I inherited it. I don't know if I could get the flash bulbs for it anymore.

A 550EX & 580EX were utilized in an A:B ratio of 1:3. "A", the master was the 550ex located on-shoe but reflected off a zipdisc to add fill.
The 580EX was utilized off camera in a Morris Softbox. The flash was positioned 45degrees to the right of the model.
A Vivitar 285HV was utilized to illuminate the background. This flash was at about 1/16 in a Lumiquest, and triggered via a PC Sync cable. For some reason my Digital Peanuts do not work with the Canon E-TTL flashes.
As I recall, I know you love to show off
But I never thought that you would take it this far

Flash was a Yongnuo YN565EX triggered wirelessly by a YN-622N and controlled by a YN622N-TX on camera. It was set to TTL and flash was 24mm with the diffusion lens in place. The flash was placed to camera left and held approximately 6 inches from the subject. A silver reflector was used at camera right very close to the lens to bring some highlight to the opposite side to the flash.
This is the second photograph of the caterpillar found hiding under an overhanging stone in the garden. I was waiting for the moment it changed but missed it by no more than a half an hour! The pupa is still a light green in colour and hasn't had a chance to harden.

A massive experiment tossed off as a trivial nothing by the natural world -- the atmosphere itself is turned into a prism, separating the blue and the green from the yellow and red of the sun's white light. The green is only there for a second, but there nonetheless.
Purchased at Goodwill for $1.01. It came out in 1975 and is notable for being the first 35mm camera with a built-in flash. This one has seen better days, but for its age it's not too bad. I ran a roll of film through it to see how it turns out.

Just bought this new light modifier at only S$40 on eBay last week. Light wise, I love the wonderful halo that is characteristic of ring flashes as shown in my recent test photo of my fiancee, Nina, here:
