This is the same as the previous, but with full flash f/22 @ 1/200 sec. Since the flash provides the full exposure, the effective shutter speed is the duration of the flash... about 1/1500 sec. This is why I generally start with flash as it assures the best action stopping potential and greatest DOF. Still in this image the butterfly's head is harder to resolve against the black background. Flash and I hiked-up Mt. Si today. 4 miles up-up-up followed by 4 miles down-down-down. Excellent hike - we had a great time...nice view at the top too.
I recently bought a ringflash to use when taking close-up photos. I like the way it illuminates the subject, as with this flower, and leaves the background dark. I believe this is a Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus). The wild native variety is bluer. However, according to Wikipedia, Cornflower "is grown as an ornamental plant in gardens, where several cultivars have been selected with varying pastel colours, including pink and purple". These ornamental cultivars have now spread to locations beyond gardens. This shot was taken on a patch of land adjacent to a tramline in Croydon, outer London.
