Hired out Photospace for half a day on the weekend and took turns playing with lighting equipment. Both of these were overexposed while triggering for the flash meter and brought down a bit in post-processing.
I used the flash and a 15 second exposure with the aperture set to f/8. Would look better if the robot wasn't in the center.

This really is an oil lamp, and it's meant to flash!
I think it works by controlling the air, so the flame burns up, consumes the oxygen, drops which allow some fresh air to be drawn in so the flame burns up...
I made this from a crappy old flash from the 70s. No adjustments other than "on-off" but still so awesome.

The signal mirror flash from Troop 413, GLAAC, at 33 mile range, as seen from the knoll 3/4 miles S of Bald Peak. The flash was quite visible to the naked eye, but of course an oversized (12"x12") signal mirror was used.
You could toast some nice marshmallows in that...
Back to 2006 and the V8 Supercar practice session at Queensland Raceway. Jason Richards in the Tasman Motorsport Commodore shoots flames from the exhaust while sandwiched between Dean Canto and his then team mate, Andrew Jones.
Flash figure designed by Alex Ross from the Kingdom Come series. He's actually semi transparent - I tried to capture that as best as possible. It took a few lights behind him to get close.
