The Allen diesel engine is one of four originally installed at Kew Bridge. The engines were installed to meet extra demand during the sumer months and, along with electrical pumps, to replace the steam engines when they retired during the 1940s.
The engine is a three cylinder, 4-stroke engine, coupled to a centrifugal pump. It has many feaures in common with more modern diesel engines, including a fully enclosed crankcase, but still has an external flywheel.

In the collapsed powerhouse, the cylinder head and flywheels are visible...The pulley is to the right of the right flywheel....This drove a belt that went to the centric that worked the oil wells by a system of rodlines..

While I was up the Coit Tower taking photos of the city, I heard (but couldn't really see) fire engines heading towards what looked like a smoky but otherwise not terribly serious fire to the southeast.
When I got off the tower, I more or less by accident ended up walking past this ladder engine, which I think I'd seen earlier downtown. Does San Francisco just have fire trucks driving around as a precautionary measure?
