"The manual fire engine pumper was a revolution in fire fighting history. It allowed for a pressurized stream of water versus the bucket brigade system. They were pulled to the scene of the fire by volunteer firemen, who took great pride in their job and firefighting skills.
This particular manual fire engine was built by the Howe Fire Apparatus Company of Indianapolis, Indiana. Howe began making this engine around 1890 and continued production until around World War I. It was unique in that it was equipped with its own water tank, allowing it to get into action without the need for an external water source. Other manual engines did not have this feature. Howe's pump was also double acting. This allowed Howe engines to pump a greater quantity of water than other engines. Typically a Howe engine crew could pump about 80 gallons per minute at 50 strokes per minute. The Howe engine was also equipped to be pulled by either men or horses. Everything considered, the Howe was superior to manual engines."
